Breakfast with Dad early on Saturday morning was one of the joys in my life when my kids were young, living a suburban country lifestyle. I would alternate each week, taking either my son or my daughter out for breakfast, sometimes at a new pick - some quirky, interesting place off the beaten path - or other times an old familiar place nearby with great food, service and prices. Regardless of which restaurant we visited, we would get there early while the streets were empty, parking was easy and the restaurant relatively peaceful. Fast forward a couple of decades and my daughter is now a professional in the city pressed for time but still happy to spend an hour lingering over a decent breakfast. So it was this past Sunday morning when my daughter, wife and I headed to Puckett's Restaurant in Franklin hoping for some down-home cooking with lots of atmosphere and friendly service. We were not disappointed. Our mood was upbeat even before we arrived, traveling along scenic backroads south of Nashville, rolling past beautiful homes and green pastures filled with contented cows and horses. We cruised into the roundabout in the old city center of Franklin and two blocks later, parked in front of the restaurant. The aroma of hot coffee and fresh biscuits greeted our nostrils as we hopped out of the car. We were quickly seated in an area that looks a bit like someone cleared an open space in a general store in order to set up a small performance stage next to a dozen dining tables - because that is actually what happened at Puckett's, a former grocery store-turned restaurant/music venue. There was no music playing when we arrived, but the place was as clean and tidy from the night before as a honkytonk country girl singing in the church choir on Sunday morning. Speaking of country girls, our waitress was sweet, easy on the eye with swift no-nonsense service. Our water glasses and coffee cups never fell below half full. The meal was great, especially the wonderful home-made biscuits with a perfect soft fluffy interior and a crisped light brown crust. Wow! My one regret at this place is that I was so busy devouring the food that I forgot to get a decent photo. The biscuit was truly a work of art. My daughter loved her breakfast burrito - hearty flavors with ingredients in proper proportion. My wife had a gorgeous bacon egg & cheese on a biscuit, and I had the Early Riser (eggs, sausage patties, beautiful biscuit and grits) to which I added (at special request), a delicious side of bbq pulled pork. Did I mention Puckett's makes great BBQ too? We wrapped up our fantastic breakfast with enough time to stroll downtown as the place was waking up & return to Nashville Airport before the traffic got heavy. We were told Pucketts is a must do. 7 of us went, was told it would be a 1.5 hour wait. We put our name down and thought we had time to walk around and shop but we got called back in 20 minutes. So don't go too far when waiting :) They had a live band that was a lot fun, loud so no talking, but lots of fun. The food was good. We got a few appetizers, including fried pickles. Terrible customer service Ordered delivery and apparently they use Uber Eats. I was shorted multiple items, including one of the two entrees, in addition to my macaroni and cheese which was an upcharge. I immediately called the restaurant -several times - and left very reasonable and polite voicemails. Additionally attempted multiple times to contact the driver, all of which were ignored. So we were on a road trip today driving across Southern Tennessee and on our way back to Nashville we decided to cruise through the quaint Town of Franklin, Tennessee. After walking through the Town and checking out all of the Civil War history and main historical monuments, we started getting a little hungry so we cracked out our trusty Yelp app and found our way over to Puckett's and boy we were glad we did. Turns out we arrived on Live music night and we caught "Rooted in Grace" which are the most talented groups of kids that entertained us tremendously singing all sorts of Christian and country songs that were awesome. This complicated things a bit as reservations weee all taken up but the staff were awesome and fit us in at the bar which was great as we talked up a storm and made a few friends as well. Once we settled in at the bar with our server / bartender Donny, we proceeded to order some drinks which were really good. I ordered an Old Fashioned and a little wine for my wife and we were good to go. For appetizers we orders the Fried Pimento Cheese bites with Pepper Jelly which were really good as well. For our main courses we had the Puckett's BBQ Platter and the Shrimp and Grits and as you can imagine they were both excellent. Now I will say that we did not have dessert on this occasion but I did spy a pretty big Apple Cobbler with Vanilla ice cream that looked amazing. Overall, we had a really great day today and closing out with a great diner at Puckett's was just icing on the cake. Wy wife and I ate here at the Franklin location today. It was a 30 minute wait on a Sunday at 11:15 a.m. or you could sit at the bar. Guess what? We sat at the bar. We bith got the bbq platter. The ambiance is good.The bartender was nice and attentive. The Brisket was ok and the pulled pork was very good. Homemade slaw was very good. Bbq beans were very good and a tasty corn cake. It's such a shame to share this. If you have ANY SORT OF FOOD SENSITIVITY (especially gluten allergies/intolerance), definitely AVOID Nico at all costs. As a longtime Williamson County resident, I was thrilled to finally share Downtown Franklin and famous Puckett's with my family, visiting from Illinois for my little sister's birthday. She has a SEVERE gluten allergy, so chatting with the server is always crucial. We were quickly greeted by Nico, and upon mentioning my sister's allergy, his entire demeanor changed. He quickly became dismissive and shouted "chicken or maybe salmon" as he walked away. Totally taken off-guard, my sweet, quiet sister's face said it all... I knew that scared her. When he returned with the drinks, I did my best to provide Nico with context on the severity of her allergy and suggested speaking with a supervisor to see what options were available. Ignoring the request, he quickly left yet again as I continued to speak. My sister was shaking, eyes swelling. Having driven four hours for the day to celebrate a happy birthday, she was broken. We left immediately, and I can honestly say I won't be back. As someone with years of hospitality experience in all shapes and colors, this level of disregard for such a life-threatening matter is universally unacceptable. This would be 5 stars but our experience at the airport location cost them 2 stars. We visited the Franklin location and the food and service were amazing! It was so amazing and the wings were so good that we wanted to go again on our way out of town at the airport. Big mistake. As usual, the airport version of a restaurant can completely ruin a restaurants reputation and this was no exception. In fact , this was may be one of the worst examples of that. For starters, they don't have the wings. This was disappointing but not a huge issue. We also waited 30 minutes for our drinks and another 30 for food. Over an hour before we even started to eat. And they weren't even very busy. Once we eventually got our food, certain side items weren't available, but instead of letting us know, the staff took it upon themselves to choose different side items for us. This was weird especially since they didn't seem to understand why that may be a concern. It was ultimately just mediocre food with bad service and nothing like the Franklin location. read more

We sat at the bar, so our server took great care of us. The name of this operation sounds like there are lots of groceries here and the restaurant is a part of it. It's really the other way around. Sigh. So the food and service is always solid but I have to say that one of the things that made this restaurant GREAT and unique was the nightly live music. Since last Fall they have shifted to music mostly on the weekends and some nights even with a cover charge, which honestly is a turn off in Franklin. I used to bring people from out of town here all the time and it was so different for Franklin and would leave friends and family with such a great impression. And while it's just a solid culinary experience, there are other decent competitors for just the food and this isn't something I jump to anymore. On top of that it's definitely a no for me if it's a night with a cover - I'd rather tip on my own (and have done so) and we aren't IN Nashville. I know people in this town are seemingly fighting for street corners to sing - plenty of really talented ones! - so I can't imagine booking is that difficult. I just want to hear semi decent live music, it doesn't have to be a CMA or Grammy winner. I don't know why they went to this model - I would think maybe there may be less turnover of tables when there is music but people are still sitting and drinking and frankly just showing up (the last few weeknights I visited the place was sad and dead). I feel like half of Puckett's brand is how they launched some of the most famous country music stars at the Nashville location. We obviously still eat here on occasion when we want BBQ but to it's not my go-to for guests anymore and I really hope they go back to the nightly music. read more

I found myself in downtown Franklin and I decided to revisit Puckett's. It's been a couple years since I've dined with them and my first for Franklin. Not to say the food isn't good, it is very good. The issue is I ended up moving to the armpit of Middle Tennessee and Puckett's isn't convenient for me anymore. Luckily I found a seat at the bar after waiting about 30 minutes. I ended up choosing the Chicken Fried Chicken dinner, which includes a Cajun corn cake, mashed potatoes, and Southern green beans. While I was waiting for the food, the live music entertainment started playing. He was really good and I enjoyed his songs. If you're wanting good food and live entertainment, Puckett's doesn't disappoint. The best part of my meal was the chicken fried chicken. The Southern green beans were ok. It had a ton of bacon in it, which I liked but it needed a good shake of the salt shaker to make it taste better. The Cajun corn cake was slightly spicy but sweet cornbread. I love sweet cornbread and this hit the spot (but it was so tiny). The mashed potatoes were under the chicken fried chicken. By itself, it was kind of bland but the point is to eat the chicken fried chicken with the gravy and the mashed potatoes all at once. I got two thin fried chicken breasts stacked on top of each other and smothered with a heaping serving or white gravy. I typically don't care for fried chicken breasts (because of the dry factor) but these were hands down, THE BEST fried chicken breasts I've ever eaten. Seasoned perfectly and incredibly juicy.
