First time visiting this place. Good hot food. Clean in the restaurant and grocery store. Staff members were friendly. Fast service. All the check outs were open. The produce looked amazing. Fresh meat. Will come again.

Favorite Mexican food in the city! The restaurant near the deli has many great food options- with huge portions and very reasonable prices. Food always comes out fast and fresh.

Ordered chicken and pork tamales along with 1/2 pound Mexican rice and tamarind Salsa. Everything was delivered hot and well packaged. Rice was so flavorfully delicious! Tamarind Salsa was well done with the right amount of tangy tamarind sauce. I had better tamales before, nonetheless, their tamales were a great value for the money. They tasted fresh with good amounts of meat.

    Plenty of mexi-chips to choose.

So much to say about this great super market. Bakery has nice selections of breads and sweets. Great prices for deli foods and produce. This was my first chance to stop into the new El Rey. Prices have definitely gone up for beer and hot deli items. Limes are still the best price in town but they are 10% smaller. 15 for a buck. The weekday shopping was less busy but it was busy nonetheless. Parking was tight at this location. Security with armed guard was nice. Deli staff and clerks were attentive. Loaded up on corn tortillas 3 bags for a buck. Menudo, three bundles of tamales, carnitas, chicharones chico are delicious. A nice trip to our version of Mexico North of the border. And I can still drink the water.

    Fantastic sweets!

This store is open all the time, even on most holidays! From the start you will see lots of pastries & sweets like churros and coconut, berry, tres leches, cakes. This is also a great place for fresh produce that you'll see near the front of the store. The middle are inside features in-store dining, as well from a selection of meats, rice, beans, etc. and table to sit. Next is the deli counter and a meat deli counter next to that. This store is very traditional and has those uncommon needs like tripe for making home cooked latin style meals such as menudo. You will not see a huge selection of brands like "Kraft" at El Rey. But mostly El Rey branded foods and some of the other popular Hispanic brands (e.g La Preferida, Goya, BIMBO, etc.) One of the things I like to get from El Rey is fresh sofrito. It can be the base of many meals (Hispanic or not!) and the jarred stuff/premade usually contains MSG. With this being fresh, it's much easier and all you have to do is take the container home from the deli cooler and fill an ice cube tray. When they freeze, viola! The sofrito cubes can be stored in a plastic bag in the fridge and is better than the jarred or premade frozen stuff with all of the unnecessary additives :) You would not come here for a huge selection of alcoholic beverages. They do have a small area near the front back corner of the store but it's limited and very cramped. Overall, it doesn't have everything but is a great convenience for certain ingredients.

    Chicharrones!!! Yumm!!!

Tortillas were crispy and fried to perfection. The consommé was delicious, had me drinking it straight out the cup and was well seasoned, hot, and was in its own something to right about. The red and green salsas were also good. Red having a bit of kick, green was flavorful. I will say that I wish one of them had more heat to it but the acidity and flavors were great. The beef itself was so flavorful and tender, well seasoned, not to mention had the perfect amount in each item. Also, Onions and peppers on the side were cooked great and had me going back for more each time. Also, get the horchata, it was spectacular. This place is small but decorated to really feel like the owners, workers, really care and take pride in the establishment. It had a great ambiance that was full of people on a rainy lunch hour, and I can see why. As a person who works in the industry as a cook, the kitchen, which you can see when you order is neat, clean, and truly has the right feel of 'they know what they're doing and they're doing it well'. 5 stars, will be talking about this meal for a long time and spreading the recommendation to as many people as I can.

For our entrees, I got the taco truck dinner with pork pivil as my meat of choice. The meat was juicy, tender and had lots of flavor! The pinto beans had a nice smoky flavor. My boyfriend got the queso chimichanga. It didn't come with rice and beans, as they are inside the chimichanga. We both agreed, the queso was a nice addition to the chimichanga. I would definitely come back to try more of the menu!

The guacamole had a strong citrus flavor which I am a fan of and the salsa was complimentary! I would HIGHLY recommend the best burrito ($15) as they did not skimp on any ingredient, especially the flavorful pork pibil. My only qualm was that the rice was undercooked and slightly crunchy, but otherwise an affordable and tasty restaurant for a date night. The staff were friendly, service was fast (less than 10min to receive food after ordering) and the restaurant had bright and colorful furniture and decor which were true to theme.

It's Saturday and I'm thinking......Don Lucho!!!!!…read more The team has been up since late night roasting and boiling and creating the most amazing carnitas you will find in Milwaukee. Get here early - parking sucks, and suburbanites will freak out at the hood, but no worries Jesus is right next door at St. Josaphats basilica and will watch over you. And don't forget to take a tour of one of this country's most beautiful cathedrals. Right there by Don Luchos. You can eat here. Lots of long communal tables so don't be shy. Prices aren't cheap but this is quality. I usually get a pound or so of carnitas. They measure it out, it's steaming, and ask if you want it chopped. I say yes. It's wrapped up tightly and it will feed you all weekend. This meat is freaking amazing!!!! I pray they haven't run out of homemade tortillas, but like I said, you gotta come EARLY. Sigh. There's about 6 different amazing salsas to try. Smoky, fresh, green, red, hot sweet - I get two for the weekend. I consider a quart of menudo. I think about. Lamb, goat, barbacoa, chorizo - but I have enough. Too hungry to wait to go home, I sit down to eat. Two tacos - huge! The best was the barbacoa - tasty little carmelized deeply flavored meat bits. Hey - don't go expecting American extras like sour cream or cheese. This is the real thing. Warming: one taco will do you. Got a side of rice and beans - yum. Don Lucho is a treasure. It is authentic, mom and pop, and these are the businesses I love to support. For an incredible adventure and source of authentic carnitas, git yourself down to da south side ya day hair and ENJOY!!!!!!
