Review: A "Dental Hazard" at Puerto Rico Restaurant and Pizzeria Rating: I've spent 56 years celebrating Puerto Rican cuisine, and I usually try to find a silver lining--but at Puerto Rico Restaurant and Pizzeria, the only thing that wasn't a disappointment was the exit door. If you're looking for a meal that doubles as a stress test for your dental work, look no further. The Vibe The music was actually the highlight of the entire experience--it was the only thing authentic about the place. It's a shame the staff didn't match that energy. Instead of the warm, cortesía smiles our people are known for, the ladies serving had a "don't care" truly appalling attitude. The place was busy, which is baffling considering the quality of what's being served. The "Frituras" Fiasco The Alcapurria "Weapons": I bought two because I was truly in the mood for them. Big mistake. I have my original teeth, but these were so hard they were essentially bulletproof. When I finally performed a surgical strike with a knife, all I found was a dense wall of "masa" hiding a pathetic "sliver" of tasteless meat. I've had legendary 24-inch alcapurrias at World Food Trucks in Kissimmee that were golden, crispy, and actually packed with flavor. However, these felt like they were made to be used as paperweights. Size is no excuse for lack of flavor. I've enjoyed superb alcapurrias up to 24 inches long that were packed with taste. If those giants can get it right, there's no reason these small ones at Puerto Rico Restaruant and Pizzeria should be this bland and inedible! The Papa Rellena & Pastelillo: My sister's papa rellena was an all-potato tragedy with zero meat flavor. As for the pastelillo de carne, it was remarkably bland--impressive, really, to make seasoned meat taste like absolutely nothing. The "Tres Leches" Dessert: For a cake literally named for three milks, this was astonishingly dry. It was as if the milk was just a suggestion the baker chose to ignore. The Verdict I paid my $17.42 because I'm a decent person, but I did so after the server ignored my complaints and charged me anyway. The pizza sitting in the window looked like it had been there since the early 90s, which fits the general "abandoned" vibe of the kitchen's effort. Final Thought: If you want actual Puerto Rican flavor, book a flight to Orlando and head to the World Food Trucks. There, you'll find piping hot empanadas, authentic mofongo with real garlic sauce, and fresh alcapurrias that are actually edible. Here, you're better off just standing outside and listening to the music for free. I compared these to the food truck in Orlando/Kissimmee because of their size and flavor. Although it's usually expected that flavor might lessen with larger sizes like 12 or 24 inches, that wasn't the case here. So, why were these tasteless, inedible, and all "Masa"--difficult to bite into? I have no more words. Extremely disappointed. read more

What can I say? It's awesome. Such homey food that really hits the spot. My dad always says it reminds me of the stuff his mom made as a kid, so if it can satisfy an old Puerto Rican guy it can satisfy you. Decided to get me a typical quick puertorriqueño breakfast . Which is usually a cup of coffee with milk and sugar, almost like a latte. But way better than I am and cheese with scrambled eggs with mayo n ketchup mixes a staple in PR. I always order chicken Soup AKA SOPA DE POLLO. Because the broth is usually amazing And it reminds me of the summer I spent in Puerto Rico as a child . The soup broth is perfect for a rainy day or cold day . What are the small as it is enough, you can accompany it with white rice if you desire. It usually comes with eg noodles, or they use spaghetti noodles with a couple of pieces of soft potato, carrots, and one protein usually born on which is the best way to have it as more flavour. The chicken was cooked perfectly. I give this soup a 8 out of 10. So I mad a mistake in the order . I got a ham and cheese panini like sandwich which was really good , minus too much ketchup . I prefer more mayo . I originally wanted and egg hand and cheese sandwich. But I was hungry. The bread was nice and harm and toasted. Mmmmm. The cheese perfectly melted. Coming back for me . Please don't eat this place's food thinking it's anything close to authentic rican food. I've tried to give them the benefit of doubt and came back 3 times. All three times disappointing. First visit was a delivery order and the rice, beans, roasted chicken and platanos were just ok. Chicken Mofongo was dry. The first time I ordered was around June 2021. Then Earlier this year as my mom and I were walking by she said she was hungry and she wanted to try their empanadas. She got a cheese and a chicken empanada. Both were over cooked and dryyyyyyy inside. Not fresh. Most recently I tried to get soup... The soup was oily and hardly any flavor. I was really hoping they would surprise me but at this point I'm just doing it to myself. I gave them three tries. I won't be ordering again. They have a variety of meats/seafood buffet style. Usually a "lunch" box with choice of rice, protein and side comes out to be $9-$12 dollars depending on the protein. I've had the oxtail, pork and chicken stew here and they were all pretty solid. Looked like the meat would be pretty dry but no, they were all very tender. The sauce is really salty but flavorful and it's not so bad when paired with the rice. The ladies there speak very little English but they're extremely friendly. read more

Looking for a new place for Spanish food. Walked in and the place looked like a cafeteria. Plenty of seats. Quick service as food is already prepared. They have a menu to order as well. We decided on prepared food. Lots of choices of food. They even have pizza. We had the following- chicken yellow rice and salad- good. chicken was tender and flavorful. Pernil maduro yellow rice- pernil was good. Was flavorful and juicy. Not greasy. Overall we enjoy our dinner. Food was good to our liking as it was not overly salty and greasy. What I see here is a restaurant grasping at all the straws to try to stay afloat. It is trying to do too many things at once and thus isn't particularly good at any one thing. First, I find it inexplicable how this restaurant sells pizza. (??) If this is a Hispanic restaurant selling hispanic food, I'm not too sure why they felt the need to also sell pizza.... that should tell you something about the quality of the food (I think that if they had to resort to selling pizza, too, it was because their latin food isn't the best). Granted, their hispanic food isn't bad... it's just not great. It has loads of potential and just misses the mark. At best, I'd give it a 6.5/10. Good enough to try once but not good enough to get me to come back. What I think needs work here: 1) the lechon is dry. Some of it was crispy, though, and that's always a good thing. 2) the ladies serving the food behind the counter are not wearing gloves!!!! Oh my god this drives me insane. Omg. So I'm strolling around Brooklyn looking for something that looks and smells good and it's Puerto Rican. I pull up on the vitrina, the window display, and I'm stepping into a time capsule of a fonda that has every holiday meal on the menu. So much variety. My friends even came back the next day for more. I only wish I had. Everything we had was delicious and the portions are generous enough for seconds later. I honestly don't understand the negative reviews. I order from this restaurant multiple times per week, and it is some of the best Puerto Rican food you can find in this area. The pernil (slow roasted pork) is always on point, and their arroz con gandules (Puerto Rican rice and pigeon peas) is as authentic as it gets. Their roasted chicken is delicious! Order from here and you will not be disappointed. FYI: They offer pizza because the building used to be an Italian Pizzeria back in the day and the old owners sold the space with the ovens. El Malecon in Bayridge only has pork pasteles , and my son doesn't eat pork. I googled and found that Puertorico restaurant in Sunset Park has chicken pasteles as well as pork, and also chicken and beef empanadas . We also got rice with soupy beans for pick up , it's was ok but bland . Not well seasoned or spicy , the pastele was dense and firmly packed a bit dry and bland . Now to the Criolla menu: we loved the rice and bean dish - a constant staple ; the chicken and pork dish brought us all back to the barrios of our parents' hometowns (Fajardo; Ciales; Morovis; and Camuy).
