Using its high Yelp rating we tried this place for lunch on our way out of California and experienced some of the same problems that we found in earlier reviews. The portions were more than enough but the food tasted a little bland and in some bites it was downright mis-seasoned. My wife commented that the salsa served with the chips tasted like catsup. The interior looked okay but I find that autographed dollar bills taped to the walls was not to my liking. The wait staff was courteous and friendly though. Kind of a mixed review for me. read more

The food, the service was fantastic!! When we were first seated we were given chips, salsa, AND refried beans and all were delicious!!! I ordered nachos that were PACKED with meat (I got chicken) and they were delicious!!! when my husband and I were done with our meal they brought two big chips covered in cinnamon and sugar with whip cream and a strawberry sauce and that was tasty!!! Now this is a great Mexican restaurant. From the outside, it looks pretty dull and low-class, but as soon as you walk in the door you will know this is superior Mexican-American. Having eaten at the competition across the street a few times, I can say that Puerto Vallarta is head and shoulders above them for both service and cuisine. This time I had their Pollo Con Arroz special, and it was quite a dish. Mushrooms, peppers, cheese, rice, and lots of chicken. Besides a huge bowl of unusually good tortilla chips and salsa, I had two Margaritas. Pretty soon I didn't know what country I was in, but was having too good a time to care. Comes to check time, and I could swear they missed something: my total was about $23 for a dinner of wild feast proportions. Quite a bargain indeed. Sorry, but this was the worst dining experience I have ever had. Horrible server, flies, warm beer, runny beans, and frozen appetizers. Had the carnitas plate. It was not carnitas but rather a middling pulled pork that did not have any of the crunchiness normally associated with good carnitas. Although not in a verde sauce, it had the same texture. The service was decent, the salsa was okay, and the refried beans were good. Overall, I would not pull off of I-5 to come here, but if you are in Yreka you could do worse. read more

Holy cow, that was one fabulous dinner!! Came her with my folks, who are in their 70's, and somewhat picky about Mexican food. We all agreed that the portions were huge, and everything was flavorful. The service was very efficient, as we never had to wait longer than a few minutes for drinks, chips with warm bean dip and salsa, and our entrees. Prices were quite reasonable, especially when you consider the size of the portions. All in all, one of the best Mexican restaurant meals I have enjoyed in years....and I live in Arizona!!! read more

I love coming here! I live locally and always choose this place over the other mexican restaurants in Yreka. The service is always friendly and prompt. The bottomless chips, salsa & beans are always delicious & fresh tasting. The food is always good & hot. I recommend a few things from here, the carne asada plate, pollo azado, chili verde, carne asada burrito, seafood combo burrito, expresso burrito, the tacos, the fajitas, or a simple bean & cheese burrito...they're all good! INSANE that this restaurant has more than 1 or 2 stars. Like many others, I was driving back from Oregon, pulled off to get something to eat. Ordered the lunch special which was 1 chicken enchilada and 1 chicken taco w rice and beans. They gave us stale chips with complimentary "salsa" that literally tasted like ketchup with cumin dumped in it. Our food comes and right away I noticed the edges of the plates are SO dirty! I didn't even want to eat my food Then the waiter says "watch out, the plate is hot!" So okay they microwave everything, got it. How is the plate ridiculously hot but the food is room temperature? They use pre-shredded bagged cheese, enchilada sauce tasted like nothing and the chicken taco was literally just PLAIN boiled shredded chicken in a taco shell I couldn't help but laugh. Feeling suspicious, I tore open my enchilada and cracked open my taco, only to discover a DEAD FLY INSIDE MY TACO. The waitress was super apologetic and mortified, but there was also a dead fly in the cup of napkins they brought out to us, so I can't imagine this is the first time this has happened?? We got up and left right away. I ate a bite of the rice and beans and feel sick to my stomach that I did! I've never had so much go wrong during a dining experience in my life. read more

My choices for dinner were Mexican, Mexican, or chain fast food. I went with Puert0 Vallarta based solely on the single $, as opposed to Casa Ramos's two. They put chips, beans and salsa in front of me as soon as I sat down. The chips are hot, - heated, not fresh. Still, pretty good. The Mole is quite good, and they don't shy away from the spice, if you request it. Don't waste your time with the regular margarita, if you like your margaritas *not* from a cheap mix. I also ordered an "ultimate," which is listed as being made with fresh lime juice. It was better, but you could still taste the mix. I'm going to Casa Ramos after this to try their "base model" margarita. Will report back. Addendum: Casa Ramos's margaritas were also from a mix, but a much better quality mix. Bottom line: if you've got an itch that only good mole will scratch, go to Puerto Vallarta. Otherwise, Casa Ramos all the way! read more

It's been so long since I've had authentic Mexican food that I was teary-eyed just walking in the place. Mariachi polkas in the background, hand-carved wooden booths, brightly-colored decor. I loved it. My margarita was excellent: not that syrupy neon green kind, but refreshingly almost clear where you can actually taste the tequila. The service was prompt but friendly. The food was delicious: my carne asada taco was so good, and my husband loved his chicken carnitas. The chile relleno was not what I'm used to, but still very good. They brought us a little dessert of cinnamon tortilla chips topped with whipped cream and strawberry sauce, which was a nice touch, but they topped that with complimentary shots of tequila! Food was very bland. My wife ordered the polo ala crema it usually come with onions. This dish had large chunks of bell peppers and mushrooms they were sour tasting and not good at all. I've had better Mexican food. I would consider this mediocre. Great for when you are hungry, pulling off the freeway, and there you are. The staff is not the best, and the ambiance is lacking. The cooks and waiters yell at each other from across the kitchen, and sometimes to and from the dining areas with seeming disregard to the patrons who are there. I have tried several dishes, and have dined there in both small and large parties, and overall my experiences have been lacking. The chili relleno is overly breaded and soggy, and rather flavorless. I do like that they offer beans with melted cheese on top to go with your chips instead of (or in addition to, if you ask for) salsa. Kids seem to like that part. I have found that the food is lacking seasoning, but is heavy on oil. I'd rather walk across the street to eat at Casa Ramos. read more

The food is not good. I ordered a ceaser salad and got iceberg lettuce with cheddar cheese and tomatoes, nothing else. Then I got a combo plate with two taco's with rice and beans. The beef in the tacos had zero flavor, not even salt. Taco bell has more mexican than this place. If you like eating from a can and on cardboard this place is for you. I was very disappointed in the food we got from here. Our meal was not complete ,no sour cream ,no quac ,no sauce...upon calling and making a complaint ,The person helping us ,Roberto said he would replace our order. The relleno was cold and hard ...our taco salads were not editable with out the condiments . This was the first Mexican restaurant where they brought chips, salsa, and BEANS to the table. AWESOME-the beans were great. I ordered a sirloin dinner, and I almost couldn't finish it. The food did take a little longer to cook than I expected, but it came out hot and well prepared. My mom and I stayed at the Best Western on our way down I5 and we found out about Puerto Vallarta from the hotel lobby. I read other Yelp reviews and figured it would be a hit, and it was! Go with an appetite, their portions are very generous! I got a vegetarian burrito thinking on the small size and it was huge! The server said it was their smallest burrito. The salsa.. it wasn't great to me; it was not even par. The chips were really hard; it cut my gums... :( The chicken mole was really Extremely sweet... It was like a sweet Mexican curry... I didn't find it enjoyable. :( The quesadilla's were stuffed with chicken (YAYz) but greasier than a fried egg roll from a Chinese restaurant... oh goshies, it made me sick... The dessert was complimentary also, it was a cinammon tortilla with whip cream.. it looked good... i didn't enjoy it because the food i ate :( so sad..... I was disappointed. Why is there Mexican food of this quality in Yreka? Who knows but it's here! I travel a lot and have endured lots of bad road food. This is an exceptional exception. Their massive menu is full of Mexican regional delights and I don't think anyone can go wrong. Get a Margarita on the rocks with the Enchilada Jalisco and you'll be in heaven...and you'll have enough left over for another meal! Be sure you get the Rancho beans.
