They are constantly switching it up, and the trainers are so knowledgeable and have such great attitudes. It's HARD, but it's doable and only 45 minutes. I burn at least 500 calories each class. The gym has a small hardcourt area for Cardio, stretching or using the spin Machines. There are several Treadmills, 1 Stairmaster and a few bicycle machines. The Free Weights are plentiful and you can go pretty hard here! There are 2 bathrooms to change/shower, and you can use the gym 24/7. My membership is $30 every 2 weeks ($60 Month) For unlimited use in all the gyms. Not too bad! My only con is their billing sucks. Frequent mistakes and they still don't bill on the date I signed on the contracts. It changes monthly and is usually 3-5 days prior. Not huge but definitely makes me wonder what's going on with accounting!?!?

I was greeted by the owner Mark Gates who was so welcoming and eager to learn about my fitness goals. We scheduled a time for a complimentary session and the rest is history. Mark devised a plan and schedule specifically for me. This included a detailed work out plan and meal plan. He is everything you could hope for in a personal trainer. He supports you, provides accountability and wants you to be successful. The environment at Best Fitness by Pharr is so friendly. Rather than drive to Unit 2, I decided to walk downstairs to lift weights. I was doing a set of DB presses, and the proclaimed expert trainer/owner told me that I couldn't drop the rubber dumbbells onto the rubber mats but rather had to put them on my thighs and rack them until I needed them again. Put aside the fact that I was doing 95lbs for 12 (that were covered in cobwebs - really!), but no one should have the energy left to do what he suggests. That is training to comfort (like the girl next to me with the trainer who chatted the whole set she was pressing empty Evian bottles in some weird up-down-around motion) - not training to failure, which is the only training. He also said that I couldn't deadlift in my black UA socks, but had to wear shoes because it was too dangerous. The best is that he and some other guy claim that they are competitors/train competitors. Ha. What a joke. Back to driving 15 mins to Unit 2 on none BJJ/Boxing days where we have a room full of bumper plates (to drop), no one wears shoes and half the guys don't wear shirts. I would say this gym is good for girls, but it really isn't. They are just wasting time. Should be called "Perceiving Fitness on Pharr."

My personal training sessions with Shawn fly by and I always wish they last longer. Just like the classes they are always different and fun, but geared towards the goals we discussed. It's been almost two months and I can tell I'm making progress. Working out never feels like a chore and I genuinely enjoy it. As a side note, COVID protocols are taken very seriously which I did factor into my decision to join (also wanting to support a small business in my community). I can't say enough good things about both coaches.
