My husband and I ordered takeout for a coronavirus date night. We traveled to the Amalfi coast and haven't had a good Neopolitan pizza since. We split 2 pizzas: prosciutto arugula and Bianca (prosciutto, basil, Italian cream). Both were amazing but we each slightly preferred the Bianca. Particularly noticeable was the crust -- soft and good flavor. We also ordered a bottle of granana (red sparkling wine) since it was on sale. Cute little restaurant in Arlington! There is a parking lot in the front which is convenient, be careful when getting out though because the way the parking lot is set up, it is hard to get out of. I saw this on Yelp the other day and had to try it! Based on the Yelp reviews I did take the recommendation to order pizzas without too many toppings. When we walked in, the staff was friendly and they let us sit where we wanted. The waitress was courteous and polite, helpful when we asked questions. We started with the mozzarella balls which were delicious and fried perfectly, I would say they are definitely better than most mozzarella sticks I have had. We got the Margherita Pizza and the Mimosa Pizza. I liked them both (I thought the Margherita Pizza was better but my friend liked the Mimosa Pizza better). For dessert she got the double scoop of Gelato, you can get two separate flavors so she ordered the Oreo and Hazelnut. I ordered the Tiramisu. The desserts with both ok, but nothing too special. Ambiance: Guido chic - I spot the pizza makers in the black button downs and red fedoras. This is a good sign. Parking: 3/5 - small parking lot but ample street parking or park at the grocery store across the street. Space: 4/5 plenty of space and the servers accommodated a large group by pushing tables together. There's also outdoor seating. Food: 5/5 Must haves: Pizza: You must be crazy to not even try the pizza here. I got the cappriciosa and the crust was wood fired and pizza crusty/doughy delicious. The ingredients were top notch and I noted a delicious fruity quality to the olive oil they topped it with that made the pizza even better. Meatballs: Really good appetizer that filled me up to. I would say you can eat this as its own entree. Good: Brussel sprouts: good, but a skosh burnt and a bit rich compared to my carb rich food . I would have probably gotten a side salad. Just came in. Bought 3 pizzas. Several appetizers. I'm. Entertaining some guests. As I was paying the 75$ tab including tip, I asked the cashier if they could make sure my pizza is well done. I had four Puppatella employees surround me and ask me what's wrong. I simply I think one of your pizzas is dl if holy undercooked. Would you be okay with throwing it back in the oven for a few seconds? There was a big uproar. Not sure why. The manager said he was from Eastern Europe but lived in Italy. I really wanted to love Pupatella as everyone raves about them but my experience was sub par. First off, at the time I was placing my to-go order, they failed to mention that their Buffalo mozzarella in the Margherita pie would be very watery borderline soggy. In addition, they added a plethora of marinara that made the pie practically inedible to consume. The fact that they even thought this pie was a, "good representation of their brand", made me very concerned to order again. In addition, they failed to cut the pie properly and somewhat seemed like a rushed job. The quality was worse than what I expected and the fact that I was starving made my experience even worse. Despite how upset I was about this pie, I didn't want to be perceived as the angry customer so I notified them so they'd fix these issues so others wouldn't have the same experience as I did. I will say that their manager was very understanding and offered me great service to the point that I may consider. She took the time to explain what happened and shared steps they'll take in the future to prevent this. I was very appreciative of her gesture and the fact that she offered me a refund, that kind of made me happy. The pie itself would be zero stars but their manager's actions are the reason why I gave them a higher rating. Honestly, I'm not sure if I'll returned but it was nice to see a restaurant take accountability for their actions. P.S. for takeout orders, check your pie before you leave the restaurant to avoid being let down like I did. read more

Perfectly cooked pizza. There's a reason why they limit you to cheese + three toppings: the thin crust is quite flimsy. It's worth the effort trying to eat it though because the taste is pure heaven. The wait was minimal, and there was plenty of seating. It's not a glamorous place but that's kind of the point. The menu is expansive and includes all sorts of pizza, paninis, and an abundance of cheese- and tomato-filled appetizers. I get the feeling I could have eaten anything on the menu and been delighted. They also have a wheel of gelato, which looked as good as it sounds. We were so full from pizza that we didn't have room for dessert, but if I ever have the pleasure of returning, I'll make a point of sampling some gelato for sure. The service was also memorably excellent, which is saying something for an "order at the counter" establishment. All in all, a total win in my book. read more

Went to Pupatella yesterday (Sunday) afternoon around 3:20 for a late lunch, and found a sign taped to the door saying, "Sorry, we don't serve pizza from 3:00 to 4:00 so that we can clean the ashes out of the pizza oven." Went inside and noticed that the oven had already been cleaned and the staff was sitting in the back, shooting the breeze. I asked the woman behind the counter, and she said oh, we'll start serving again around 4:15. I asked if this was now their everyday policy and she said yes. So, if you're hungry for pizza, don't go to Pupatella between 3:00 and 4:15. To be on the safe side, maybe don't go there between 2:00 and 5:00. read more

Came here on a weekday for lunch - the service was quick, my pizza came out in less than 10 minutes. The Margherita tastes good but I wouldn't call it great (there are others in the area who use far superior ingredients). The staff was friendly, I was welcomed at the door. This place was so hyped up but it was pretty disappointing IMO. I came in at about 4pm on a Saturday outside of the lunch/dinner rush, no line/wait at all so it's not like they were pressed on time. Service was fine, the ingredients are definitely super fresh but the crust was extremely soggy and sloppy. Pretty disappointing for wood-fire pizza joint. I'll take a hard pass on this next time and check out one of the other 1000 pizza places in Arlington. I will say the gelato was money though :) read more

This place is highly rated and I can't fathom why. We started with an olives plate and ordered two different pizzas: a make your own with tomato sauce, ricotta and eggplant, and the capricciosa. The ricotta and eggplant combination is a favorite of mine from a few other pizza places but it was underwhelming. You would think that with so little ingredients that aren't strong in flavor would really allow you to taste the sauce, but if you were to ask me how I would describe it, I couldn't tell you. The only thing I really tasted was the crust and bits of charred areas. I think they also cut up the eggplant pieces a bit too small to really get food flavor out of them as well. The capricciosa was disappointing as well. I liked the sound of the combination of toppings but it actually turned out to be a really watery, soggy pizza, which I've never experienced. Holding up the slice to eat it, liquid would run down the slice. The crust definitely wasn't made to hold so much liquid. All the flavors kinda just mashed together to taste like nothingness. 2 stars for being generous with the toppings and the lightness of dough, but otherwise I won't return. read more

Absolutely lives up to the hype!!!! I've been meaning to try Pupatella for ages, and finally came in on a Sunday around noon for lunch. It was definitely crowded, but there will still plenty of tables available for our group of 4. I split a prosciutto and arugula pizza and the Brussels sprouts appetizer. The pizzas are definitely a good size for one person, but since we got the side we found that those two together were enough for both of us to share. The pizza was absolutely amazing. The crust is so delicious as it comes right out of a huge brick oven - you can see them hand make every pie! The sauce is probably best red sauce I've ever had around here; it is light, not too sweet, and slightly tangy. Unbelievable! And of course you can't go wrong with prosciutto and arugula and fresh parm on top. The Brussels sprouts were awesome, super crispy and well seasoned. I also got to try a bit of the sausage and caramelized onion pizza, and I would totally come back and get it. It was smoky and flavorful. You order at the register and they bring the food to your table. I expected this to mean we wouldn't be served at all, but no- a server came by and check on how we liked the food as well as refilling waters for us multiple times! It was so lovely. Fabulous service. After our pizza we could not resist the gelato from the giant machine that sits in the middle of the restaurant tempting everyone who walks in! I had pistachio cannoli which was yummy and the pistachio is not overpowering. Also tried the hazelnut (absolutely divine) and figs and mascarpone (super deliciously fruity). I also find the prices reasonable overall - anywhere from around $10 to around $18 for a pizza and around $3 for the gelato. Only downside was not a lot of parking so we parked in the Safeway lot (I don't think we were supposed to haha). I will definitely return, and often!! The casual yet chic vibe and absolutely incredible pizza might just make me become a regular! read more

This is the best pizza place in Virginia and on par with the pizza that I ate in Italy. After coming back from Italy, I searched long and hard for authentic pizza. This is it, you guys!!! The crust is perfectly cooked. Not too dough-y, not too thick, and has a simple taste. The oven cooks the dough perfectly too. I love seeing those small burnt bubbles on my crust. The tomato sauce is so simple and good. I know that using a lot of sauce isn't the proper way to make pizza, but the sauce is soooo delicious that I wish they'd drown my pizza in it. I guess I'll have to start ordering sauce on the side so I can just spoon that heavenly goodness straight into my mouth lol. My favorite pizzas, out of the ones that I've tried, are all of them. Sorry if that doesn't help you, but get whatever you're feeling that day and you will be satisfied! I've tried the pizza with anchovies (yum! Love the salt), the prosciutto and arugula, the margherita (so simple and perfect. The basil really comes through), and a pizza with ham and artichoke on it (also very delicious and filling). I've read all of these reviews (especially the ones from the elite reviewers) and I am wholeheartedly confused. The pizza is bad. Like up there with the worst I've ever had. Nothing about this pizza felt authentic to me. I've been to Italy and had pizza there. I can attest it is not standard for there to be two centimeters of standing water/oil on your pizza. To be really honest, the food is quite alarming. Food aside, the atmosphere inside is definitely kind of odd. Nothing terrible about it but it wasn't the warmest or most inviting. The outdoor space looked amazing and like you could have an enjoyable time out there. Unfortunately, I and my s/o could not find open seating out there. The service was great and the food came out fast so no complaints there. But, again, the food was really quite bad. I originally came to Pupatella when I moved away from Inferno Pizzeria in Gaithersburg. Pupatella's is less crust (yay!) and more pizza and better toppings than Inferno ever was, and I seriously have not encountered better pizza. They don't have pineapple here (I guess it doesn't belong on pizza then!) and I'm fine with that, but be aware if pineapple on pizza is your normal jam. My favorite combo is white sauce, cheese, beef pepperoni, spicy salami, and bacon. It's seriously amazing and I order it every time. I'd skip the appetizers; they're mediocre. But definitely get the pistachio gelato - it's a mildly sweet and flavored take made in-house, and they present it with a couple cookie sticks, which plays up any date night. read more

24 Nov Finally had the chance to sit in and dine. It's an odd environments it's casual but they also serve wine so no complaints by me on that part. Very busy with kids- atleast on a Sunday afternoon. I typically only do takeout here and will return to doing that. The pizza was flimsy and although it's Neapolitan, it could have been more crispy. Usually when i bring it home I'll preheat in my oven on a pizza stone & love it. Not so much love fresh at the restaurant. The bread with mozzarella & garlic sauce was good as heck & the meatball panini was good as well. The gelato is a tasty treat for afterwards & if you're not into wine, they have some local beers available in mini fridge! *** The pizza was tasty but the crust was very chewy and soft. No crisp to it. Im going to place blame on the takeout box and will be returning to eat in the restaurant just to see if there is a difference. Delicious wood fired pizza and perhaps the best pizza sauce in the Arlington area... Seriously the tomato sauce reminds me of my favorite joints in Manhattan, it's that good. I've tried the diavola, meatball, and chorizo pizzas as well as the Brussels sprouts. The diavola and meatball came out as crispy and heavenly disks of cracker-thin crust: the perfect vessel for delivering toppings of such great quality. The meatballs are homemade and seasoned well. The saltiness from the meat compliments the soft and milky ricotta dollops, thinly sliced garlic, and the bright green basil, with that tomato-y tang tying it all together. The diavola pizza had a similar flavor profile but on the spicy side, and cooled down by its partner toppings. The chorizo pizza comes in third place. I thought the vegetables on top released some water, watering down the sauce and weakening the integrity of the pizza due to the weight of the toppings. Thus, I thought the diavola and meatball pizzas were more balanced in taste. If you're in need of an appetizer, the Brussels are a healthier place to start if you want to avoid the more carb-heavy small plates. The sprouts are beauuutifully roasted to the point where the single leaves taste and crunch like potato chips, and then the entire thing is tossed in balsamic vinegar with batons of sour cinnamon apple. Honestly you can't go wrong with anything on the menu if it's your first time visiting. This place is full of families, solo diners, regulars who come often enough that staff will sit down and chat for a few minutes, and peewee sports teams, it seems--a sign of a great neighborhood joint. read more

I've heard nothing but great things about Pupatella. Many of my friends described Pupatella's pizza as "THE BEST". Based on these stellar recommendations, I had high expectations that were soon crushed into tiny pepper flakes. The service was good and quick, and all the employees were friendly, so no complaints there. Everything else (ambiance, price, quality), not so good. So you place your order at the counter then choose your own seat. We chose to sit in the larger dining area, which I immediately noticed smelled very strongly of cat litter. Weird. A man brought glasses of water, which had some lil dusties floating around at the top. A little icky, but not enough to render a complaint. My friend ordered the brussel sprouts which seem very popular. Fried, smothered in a balsamic vinegar, and mixed with apples, these brussels sound delightful. However, I found the balsamic overwhelming, but this might be a personal preference since many others seem to love this appetizer. I ordered the white mushroom pizza, which comes with brie, Italian cream, and of course mushrooms. I thought the pizza was good, but for $12, I think I could get a GREAT pizza elsewhere with less cat litter smell. Overall, I will leave Pupatella to all the raving fans and never return.
