Pupatella is relatively famous among locals in Arlington for their pizza. It's good, but I'd be hard-pressed to say it was fantastic. I am probably in the minority with this perspective. We've ordered takeout and eaten on site, and I think the on-site food is better. When they screw up an order, which doesn't happen often, you'll get an apology and they will remake it, without any sort of adjustment or non-monetary compensation for the extra wait. Other restaurants will often throw a dessert, or a beverage your way, but they seem to assume mistakes are a result of being busy, and not their responsibility. read more

This still does not take away from my spiritual connection with the pizza here. seriously, it's that good. We also ordered the arancini sampler, which were all amazing. I would totally order them as an appetizer for 2. They included an eggplant, a sausage, and a prosciutto arancini; the prosciutto was the table's favorite. Also, tip: if you want to be seated, you must order first. I'm told the food is great but I wouldn't know since we waited FORTY minutes for food with no one coming to check on us, only to find out the system "lost our order". No one thought to check on the big round top in the middle of the courtyard with no food on it? Worse yet the manager didn't have the guts to come and talk to us himself - he sent an employee to deliver the news to us and our 3 young children. It's unfortunate that I paid for this meal.... honestly... totally over rated and just very disappointing. My 14 year old daughter and I came because she felt like pizza and I remembered a recent recommendation from a FB friend. We were also close by. We ordered two appetizers and two pizzas. Let's go through this one by one... but first, let me say the location is great, parking was easy and convenient ( right up front) ordering was simple and the staff welcoming and helpful. Now, back to the food.... I'll try to keep it simple. Mozzarella balls - not warm, under fried, not tasty Brussels sprouts - not warm, over cooked , under seasoned Eggplant pizza - not warm, undercooked dough, soggy It was really a very disappointing meal especially for something as simple as pizza for $45.00. I was looking forward to a pizza similar to those I've had in Italy, Naples in particular.. this place did not deliver.... sorry. Maybe it was an off day???? We looked forward to trying this because we've heard so many good things. So, we had a disappointing experience. We delivered through door dash, and the food arrived in a timely manner. But the pizza was cold despite them saying it was made fresh. The salami on the pizza had a very strange taste. I think they use beef instead of pork products, which I'm not really a fan of. The crust was thin, which we usually like, but it was moist rather than being crispy. There was nothing special about it. It wasn't bad but it wasn't worth the price or the effort to get it. We also got an order of risotto balls with sausage, I believe it's called Arancini. We've had this dish at other restaurants and we really enjoy it, but their version had way too much mozzarella inside and that strange tasting beef sausage. We will probably try it again. We will order something different and hope for a better quality. I noticed there was a sign when I drove by saying they are hiring, so maybe it's an issue of not having enough help but the ingredients were not that tasty. After having recently returned from Italy, I didn't think I could ever be impressed by US pizza ever again, however, Pupatella did a great job of convincing me otherwise! We arrived on a Saturday around 7pm and found parking right out front! The line was not out the door yet but became so shortly after we got in line. The hostess was really friendly while we were in line, and was helpful in finding us seating after we ordered. We sat at the bar area which was cramped. If a table is open or will be soon, I'd recommend sitting at a table over the bar. The cashier was friendly too and was nice to give us a heads up that our pizza would be 40 minutes but an appetizer would come up much sooner. We ordered the garlic and melted mozzarella bread as a starter. It is exactly as described-2 pieces of bread with garlic spread topped with heaps of melted mozzarella. I would have rather gone the salad route, but since my husband is averse to veggies this was what we wound up with. It was tasty and cheesy and held us over until the pizzas arrived. We ordered the Diavola (Spicy salami, fresh mozzarella, basil) and the Fig and the Pig special pizza (fig, prosciutto, burrata, mozzarella and balsamic drizzle). Both had perfect crusts-chewy in some parts and crisp in others. The spicy salami was delicious and paired well with the tomato sauce. The cheese amount was perfect! I am partial to white pizzas so my favorite was the pig and the fig! I loved the sweet/salty contrasts plus the creamy burrata. One pizza per person is definitely the way to go! The food, of course, is excellent. However, the lady who operates the register is probably one of the rudest staff members at a restaurant I've ever had the unfortunate circumstance of interacting with. She acts that she's doing a huge favor to you by permitting you to order. Any change to a menu item is met with a look of disgust and potentially even a remark that such item is no longer available (even though subsequent customers are able to request that item). I've been here a few times and this staff member has always left me wondering why I bother going back? A friend introduced me to this place today and I must say I'm thoroughly impressed! They have a wide variety of pizzas to choose from, and even have a "build your own pizza" option as well. This option let's you customize sauce, cheese, as well as ingredients to your tasty delight. The atmosphere inside the restaurant has a very "home style" kind of feel. Almost a Mom & Pop vibe that resonates in your soul. They also have seating on their back patio with sun shade. It's been a long time since I've been to a pizza place that made me feel welcomed. This is definitely the place for me. I almost forgot, I had the ham and mushroom pizza and the crust was absolutely delicious. Whatever dough they use is insanely good. I called Pupatella tonight to find out how I might be able to order a bunch of food for a big family dinner tonight. They answered the phone, did not give me a chance to get in a single word, and told me to "hold". I have been sitting on hold for more than 15 minutes now, and nobody has bothered to get back on to take my call. Whoops. They just did while I was writing this review... The staff is friendly and the pizza is good! You order at the counter and place your number on a table. Adequate parking space outside, but seating is slightly limited in the back room. Initially we sat by the window, but started playing musical chairs because it was too cold. One of the employees made a joke about us moving around and we said it was just too cold and he immediately turned up the heat! It's that kind of environment that will keep me going back! I like their selections of pizzas off the menu. Some aren't typical (but still within norm) so it's nice to be able to select something a little varied but not so out there. I came here for lunch on a chilly day just before 2 PM. It's my dining partner's favorite pizza place, so inevitably i'd end up here sooner or later. We got brussel sprouts to start and skipped the salad since I basically ordered a salad on top of my pizza. I got the prosciutto-arugala and he got the diavola. They were both very good. I think the only thing i didn't like was that the crust get soggy pretty quickly, when I prefer it has a crunch to it. They do advertise that they have a thin dough and I think it's just not my preference. The toppings were fresh and tasty and the flavors went well together. The sprouts weren't overly greasy and were flavored well, which is a big deal to me. The service was definitely top notch for a "pizza spot" (as opposed to an italian place taking themselves too seriously.) My friend and I visited Pupatella after spending the day in Arlington. The parking is usually challenging with only a few spaces in front of the place, but we were making good time since we arrived when someone was just walking out to their car! There was a line of people at the counter when we went inside, but the queue actually moved quite quickly, and by the time I knew it, it was time to make a decision! Almost all their red pizzas come with fresh mozzarella, which made the decision even harder to make because I love nothing more on my pizza than freshly baked mozzarella; ultimately, however, I decided to try the Diavola pizza, which comes with fresh mozzarella, spicy salami as well as basil. My friend ordered the Chorizo pizza, which came with spicy chorizo, red onion, red pepper and fresh mozzarella. We sat in the back area since the tables inside were all taken, and our pizzas were brought directly to our table. We decided to share and try half of each other's pizzas, but I seemed to enjoy the Diavola pizza more because it was the perfect balance of all the ingredients, whereas I found the chorizo on her pizza to be on the saltier side. The only complaint I have besides the parking is that the pizzas have a thin crust, so the bottom may come out slightly burnt (based on my previous experience here). My family ate here right after flying into town. The staff was extremely helpful and very engaging. It was pretty busy for 8:30 on a Wednesday but that just proved to me that this place was good. We ordered the garlic bread as an app and 4 pizzas for 6 people. The garlic bread was great and nice and warm. The pizzas we ordered were the Meatball, Filetti DOC, Pepperoni and the Diavola. Every single pizza we had was delicious and was hot. The place was clean and the bathrooms were decent. My 2 minor complaints are going to be the price and size of pizzas. For a family of 6 with a teenager, 2 preteens and an 8 year old, I was lucky to get off with only 4 pizzas and one appetizer. The youngest wasn't that hungry and only had one slice. There was no pizza left and everyone was ready for dessert. Do I feel they are worth it, yeah. I wouldn't make it an every week place to go, but it was definitely good pizza. Now with tip and drinks you're looking at almost $80. Not horrible but we can usually get a few pizzas for about half of that, but they are not half as good as this. So the old adage of "you get what you pay for" applies. read more

I can't even find words to describe how good the pizza here is. I must have told my date 5+ times how the pizza crust was the best thing I had ever tasted. Take advantage of the "Buy 2 pizzas, get 10$ off a wine bottle". The 26$ house bottle for 16$ was a steal for an Arlington restaurant. The place gets packed though so be prepared to squish or to wait- even at 8pm on a Sunday night it took a while to find a good table and for our pizzas. An added plus to this place is that in the main dining area they have a live feed of your pizzas being made- something original I have never seen before. This place is a really cute date spot! It was a little busy when I came on a Thursday night, but the service was super sweet. Someone greeted me right when I came in, handed us a menu and asked our preference of a table. It was pretty packed but people were clearing out at a readily steady pace. They then assigned us a table for us to go after we ordered and paid. You can watch the pizza be made as you walk down the line to pay. We got two pizzas, one with white sauce and cheese and corn (would recommend!) and the other with red sauce, prosciutto, basil and cheese (also very good but I think you can get this anywhere). I would definitely go back and try their different speciality pizzas. I could only finish three slices of my four-sliced pizza (but I have a small stomach so if you eat like a normal person, they recommend one pizza per person). They also had a deal if we bought a bottle of wine with our pizzas. I told them I liked sweet and what their recommendation would be. Pupatella consistently churns out some of the best pizzas around. I've been going for a few years and it's time I wrote a review! From the appetizers to the dough to the toppings and the gelato, you really can't go wrong getting anything on the menu. My favorites are the fried mozzarella balls, Caivano, Margherita, Chorizo, Buffala Bianca, and Pepperoni pizzas. The new patio is amazing for a good night, and the takeout process is very effective! Noise noise noise is driving my hb and me away. We were there a few days ago and had move tables to find a spot where we could actually converse....then noticed rooms have surrounding metal panels on all walls---may be great to their cleaning crew....but, increases decibel levels beyond pleasurable... I once gave this pizza place 5 stars when it first opened but it has been slipping over the years in minor ways even though I can say the flavor or the pizzas remain one of the tops in the Northern Virginia area. Once relaxed and friendly, Pupatella is slowly becoming just another wait wait wait for your pizza, Once welcomed with a friendly smiling face when asking for your order now has morphed into a quick order joint. Waiters rushed and nary much of a nod to friendliness. Good owners are not only interested in serving excellent food but also excellent service as well. An opening of a second Pupatella may be lending itself to hiring people who just have a job to do and not that interested in excellent service. I miss the great thought into the enjoyable art on the walls that has now been replaced with run of the mill stuff stuck here and there--well, I used to love the original design-- They have added a few more Italian wines that were desperately needed and I am sure enjoying --please consider carrying more great Italian wines. Salads not prepared with the love and consistency that was once there. Once served in a medium sized bowl that was great for tossing especially with the small amount of dressing served. Gone are the great bowls so salad arrives on flat small plate. Good luck tossing the small and measured dressing on plate! We did a pepperoni pizza and then a make your own with white sauce, mushrooms and basil. The basil was over cooked and had no flavor. The white sauce and crust were flavorless. The mushrooms left much to be desired. The crust was a bit doughy as well. The pepperoni pizza was fine but same issues with the crust. Awesome pizza place on Wilson Blvd just outside of Ballston. Pizza is soft with the slight char flavor on the crust from the oven. Sauce is plentiful and sweet- which is exactly how I like my pizza. Only disappointmment is I wish I had come sooner! I lived nearby for several months and despite many recommendations, hadn't tried it until now. Man do these guys know what they're doing. For starters, Neopolitano pizza means true Sicilian style. There's only a handful of these orthodox shops around the DMV area and Pupatella is by far the best one of them all. Made to order, each pizza is hand tossed and cooked in a traditional Sicilian brick oven. The juice of the cheese cover perfectly across the thin layer of sauce, the toppings are fresh, and the crust is just absolutely divine. One thing to note, they recommend you order one for yourself but the portion is rather large. Unless you're acting gluttonous and want to feel disgusting for the rest of the day. I'd recommend splitting a pizza with a friend, and saving room for some eggplant arinchini to start...then top off your meal with some delectable gelato. read more

Great service and friendly staff. Watching the pizzas being prepared and cooked in the wood burning oven  brings me lot of excitement. For the pizza I ordered meatball. All the ingredients are fresh and I can taste the difference. Taste wise is was really good, almost remind me of eating pizza in Italy.  It doesn't get anymore authentic then the slightly burnt crisp on the crust. Pupatella is incredibly consistent delivering a great pizza and atmosphere. I've come here enough to settle into a preferred order of a Diavola pizza and the brussel sprouts starter. The sprouts are always perfectly cooked and the apples with balsamic help balance it out perfectly. The Diavola always comes out with the crust perfectly puffy and the meat just a little crisp. The back patio is great for a group in the spring and summer. The food is not worth it. Repeat me after me. The food is not worth it. We ordered pick up. Arrived and there was confusion at the door on what we ordered. The front desk lady tried to give us an order but it had the wrong name so we said no. she looks around again, asks the kitchen to double check. She finds our order on the table. We take it home. It's the wrong pizza. It's actually the same order that we told her specifically was not ours. We call and they say immediately "please come back and we will fix this" We go back. The front desk lady tries to say "you grabbed the wrong order! I asked if you were this person and you said yes" We said "no I didn't." So she tries to give us our correct order but by now it's cold. She says "it's fine it was made at 6:30" and we said "no it's cold I want new pizza". She responds and says "well we're really busy now and need to remake all 4 Pizzas" I reply "I'll wait for the new pizza" Someone else comes by and says "you want a new pizza? No problem!" The new pizza was done in basically 5 minutes. As I was leaving she says "maybe you were wrong. Maybe I was wrong but I guess the customer is always right" I said "yeah" This is absolutely insane!!! No one should ever be treated like this for a pickup order gone wrong. The pizza wasn't even that great yet again!! We got the DOC and the onion tart. I have now tried 5 different types of pizza and they are all meh. Undercooked dough and soggy toppings. I will never waste my time here again. read more
