Who knew such a sweet little jewel of a coffeehouse/cafe could be found in Bishop? It's a little hard to find but worth it. We stopped (thanks to Yelp) on a Monday morning while traveling south on 395. The panini sandwiches were delicious and they had excellent coffee. We didn't have room for one of the amazing waffles but there will definitely be a next time for us. There were magazines and newspapers to read and the owner was attentive and helpful. read more

This cafe is a hidden gem on the way from LA to Mammoth. It's attached to the back of a bookstore, and they serve the best (true) Belgium style waffle I've had outside of Belgium each day until the batter sells out. So if you stroll in at 12:30 pm on a busy day, you might not get one. It's a thick, doughy, irregularly shaped waffle with caramelized sugar, and it's delicious in their dessert version topped with fruit, nuts and whipped cream. Also unique and exceptional is their tuna salad sandwich with loads of texture, a slight sweetness and crisped bread. These are the only two things I've ever had here -- mostly because I can't bring myself to skip these two items when I go -- but I'm looking forward to eventually trying the rest of their menu. This bohemian cafe is usually a homey mix of locals, backpackers and roadtrippers. Local art lines the walls. And while you're waiting for your order to come out, the bookstore's not bad either. read more

But after a few days traveling along 395 all we wanted was some fresh vegetables and good protein. The location is hard to find - tucked in a bookstore, but well worth it. This was the cutest off the radar place I've been in a while. We stopped on our way home from So. Lake Tahoe for a bite to eat, and anything on the main strip had a line way out the door. We found Pupfish and it was perfect! The food was special. My kids had the waffles - one was plain and the other was dessert style. They were delicious and memorable. I am still thinking how did they do that and how can I emulate that??? My oldest, picky eater had a special turkey sandwich for her and I got the pick at theirs and drink and wonderful cup of coffee. We stopped here on our way to Mammoth from Orange County. You need to drive in the back to find the entrance. It wasn't super busy and we got a table right away. We ordered the paleo breakfast it was fantastic. Also an egg and cheese sandwich for our son and the house special waffles for our daughters. My husband had a coffee and he said it was delicious. All in all if you want a healthy alternative on the road this place is fantastic. I'm a Nutritionist and difficult to please so glad to have found a great spot! read more

Let me echo the five stars for this laid back, friendly cafe on the road to Mammoth. There is ample parking behind the cafe, so don't let the obscurity of the location behind the bookstore deter you. About as non corporate as it can be, there were a mix of local 20 somethings on laptops and retirees hashing out the local political scene. And the food- we each had egg and cheese paninis on tomato and pepper ciabatta bread from a local bakery. Simple, but perfect. Fresh ground coffee in real china cups. I'm a foodie and have to say, Pupfish is one of the best places to eat in the Eastern Sierra. Just had the Portabello grilled sandwich. Fantastic! The Liege waffles are so good I bought six dough balls and made them at home for Christmas breakfast. The egg salad is spicy and creamy with just the right amount of brine from the black olives.
