An incredible find! I was nearby at the Garden nursery, and got out of an event famished. I looked for the closest option and came upon this pupuseria. I stopped in at an "off" time for lunch, so I had the place to myself at first. Having never had a pupusa before, I asked for recommendations on what to try and they recommended two pupusa was plenty for lunch, three if I was extremely hungry. Not sure if I would like it, I selected one pupusa with steak and cheese and then two street tacos. I watched some European football while waiting and the food came out hot and fresh. Holy smokes, the pupusa was absolutely incredible! One of the best things I've had in a long time. The tacos were great as well, and the table had a couple of sauces to try. My order also came with a vinegar slaw that was great. By the time I was finishing up, there were three more tables full as they were ramping up for early bird dinner. If you're in the for a delicious Salvadoran staple come to Casa Maria on the west side! I was turned onto pupusa's by my staff in the kitchen of the old pat flynn's public house. The guys would bring in homemade pupusa all of I'm sorry the time and tell me stories about how these would just be sitting on the table when they got home from school or what not like a pb&j would be for us back in the day. I don't get to see those guys anymore so I had to go out and find some pupusa's unless I wanted to make them myself and let me tell you they're a little trickier than you think. I love coming to this place. It's friendly and festive and the food is just remarkable. Everyone eating they're definitely has a smile on their face. I think they have more in their menu but I always like to get a cheese of bean and a pork pupusa. I'm sure they have chicken, etc. but I'm partial to these for some reason. Did you know that rice stops salt mobs? Throw a few grains in your shaker to prevent clumps from forming. I may have never learned this without stepping into this room of flavor. Perturbed by my first nuke of text messages since the 10th grade I retreated to a safe haven. Any spot that serves doughy, meaty, cheesy discs warms my wounded soul like the embrace of a rotund retiree named Marge. A trifecta platter of papusas (all with cheese) included chicharron, chorizo and a recommendation of steak. The recommendation reigned supreme. Albeit the serviceability of the former two, Team Asada simply overwhelmed the competition. It was a bombastic dump of salted satisfaction which brewed a number of "mm" sounds and a chair shift or two. If you don't like yellow then get your food to-go. The food is always great along w a very friendly staff. The tables are always wiped down quickly which helps keep the restaurant clean.

This place is really good signage on their menu and lists everything on the menu really clearly with English translations and also shows whether things are vegetarian and gluten-free so this is really celiac friendly. The server was really friendly as well and he made sure to let us know how to eat pupusas (with the cabbage ) in case this was not our first time. Everything was good. Not exactly cheap though but I think it was worth the price. This was the first time I have seen pupusas with an alpastor option though I didn't get to try it this time so I will have to be back. I took a friend from Iran here because he loves trying other culture's foods. The people at Pupuseria Casa Maria were so happy to cater to him and guide his ordering! Since we moved to Cincinnati back in 2007, we've made a point to visit Chicago every year or two--usually for a long weekend in the spring or fall. The drive, of course, mostly takes you through Indiana, and we've long been dismayed by dining options along I-74 and I-65. (That's true, of course, of interstate dining just about everywhere.). It's almost entirely a dismal parade of sad fast food. And when you drive through Indianapolis itself on those interstates, there appears to be little in the way of dining options near the interstate exits. We weren't digging deep enough, or looking far enough off of the interstates. The wife discovered before this last trip that Indianapolis crushes Cincinnati when it comes to Salvadoran food options. But you do have to drive a few minutes off of the interstate to get to them. Like many (most?) Salvadoran restaurants in the United States, Pupuseria Casa Maria is modest and homey, with just 8 or 10 tables and order-at-the-counter service. The staff here is super-friendly, and you can observe that they prepare your pupusas to order. They came out piping hot, fresh, and tasty. Loroco & cheese and revueltas (meat, cheese, & bean) were both excellent, and the curtido was tangy and bracing (although I wish there had been a little more of it). FWIW, the chalkboard-like menu has some Mexican fare on it, too. Pupuseria Casa Maria, at least on this day, was distinguished by the music on the sound system, which sounded like a Spanish-language version of '80s and '90s new wave and indie rock (although who knows when this stuff was actually recorded). The pupusas here are delicious. I haven't been in a bit because I love their tamales. They were taken off the menu for a bit but I saw they were back so I stopped in. When I went in it was a Saturday afternoon so they were pretty busy. I had about a 20min wait for a takeout order which I think was totally worth it. If you don't want to wait that long just call and place a takeout order. I got chicken tamales and pupusas one steak and one chorizo. I have driven by countless times over the last few years, and have always said I'm going to try them one day. Today was that day, and now I am kicking myself for not visiting earlier! The pupusas I ordered were dense and packed with flavor. The gentleman I ordered from was ultra-friendly, and understood I wasn't a native Spanish speaker. He went well above and beyond. I want to shout from the mountaintops about our amazing Salvadorian breakfast from Pupuseria Casa Maria this past weekend. I've had my eye on this meal for quite some time so it was such a delight to find that it was just as tasty as I imagined and perfect for a picnic in the park. For starters, Casa handles their COVID safety precautions very well. Currently, they are only offering takeout and delivery (on three platforms) and have the inside of the space set up conducive to social distancing while you wait for your order or check out. I waited in the car for mine and was able to quickly run in and grab it. We ordered the traditional Salvadorian breakfast (called "Desayuno" on the menu) and two orders of the "Tipico" breakfast along with an extra order of Curtido. Our carryout boxes were filled with fresh handmade, thick tortillas, beans, chicharrones, queso fresco, crema, plantains and delicious salsas. Note that the typico comes with chicharrones and yuca whereas the Desayuno is a bit smaller and comes with queso fresco. Their curtido was a little different from others I've had in the past as it seemed to have more oregano and less of a citrus flavor. I can't wait to return to try their homemade soups and once COVID is over, I'll be dining in house for a glass of their $4 wines, fun traditional drinks, and more. Looking for something different and this place was recommended to us. Mexican and Salvadoreño. We eat Mexican all the time so decided to try the Salvadoran options. We each got a pupusa, one steak one chorizo. My husband got refried beans and I ordered plantains (plátano). Food was cooked fresh. Wasn't quick but wasn't a long time either. Husband said the beans were the best he has had in years. Pupusas were very good. I fell in love with plantains when I was in Colombia after college and love them, still can't quite make them at home properly so I love it when I can find them out. These were delicious. I've lived nearby on the northwest side for a long time, and have driven by here many times. I was always intrigued, but never stopped in because I wasn't sure it was still open and even if it was, the mirrored windows made me a little leery...so, when I saw some recent great reviews I figured, what the heck, may as well try something new in the middle of a pandemic. Ordering and paying through the Yelp app was extremely easy, and my prepaid order was ready for pickup when promised. They had the bag on the counter so I was able to grab it and scoot back out quickly. They do have x's on the floor to help people keep 6 feet apart if multiple people arrive at once to pick up their orders. The food was amazing and is insanely inexpensive. I ordered 3 pupusas, guacamole and chocoflan for dessert. Somehow, I had never had pupusas before, so I ordered a variety: pork, cheese and bean, plain pork, and cheese and zucchini. All 3 were excellent and were 2 hearty meals. Honestly, unless you have a huge appetite 1-1/2 pupusas makes a filling meal. The fillings were all flavorful and plentiful. I have no idea how they sell these for $2.50. The guacamole was excellent. I liked the addition of onion and lime. The sauces and slaw accompaniments were excellent. The chocoflan is a great idea! Casa Maria is seriously crushing the game in terms of COVID19. They are doing both delivery and takeout on their Yelp page and it's super easy to navigate. When you go inside to pick up your food, they have x'es placed on the floor every six feet so you are never close to another patron. Their space is also immaculate, but more about that below. Here's three big things you need to know: 1. THEY HAVE THE BEST GUAC IN NORTH AMERICA. If that's the only thing you read, that's fine. Just write it down and remember it. Truly though, I never usually get guac with my pupusas, but this last time I decided to go wild and get a side of the green goodness. It honestly tasted like they'd found the freshest avocados in the world and cut them up about a minute before giving me my to-go bags. 2. Do not judge by the outside. The building itself has seen better days, but Casa Maria has recently redone their exterior sign, completely redone the interior and boasts one of the best health codes in the city (seriously -- you can see it on their Yelp page... it's a 95/100!! Truly one of the best in the state). It's immaculate and super hard to achieve. 3. Their menu is incredible. We got six pupusas (cheese, cheese and steak, cheese and chicken, cheese and zucchini) and they came with little containers of the tomato salsa and cabbage relish included. We also got a side of guac, and I saw that they also have fresh queso and chips, which we'll definitely be adding to our order next time. Note: the pupusas are BIG and heavy. They load them up and don't skimp. It's an incredible meal for the price point. They also have tacos, flan, Mexican sodas, churros and more. If you're not on your way already, get to it! Our whole meal of 6 pupusas (we both had leftovers) and guac was only about $20 which is an amazing deal considering it fed us for four meals. I tried three types - bean and cheese, loroco with cheese, and zucchini with cheese. These were stuffed! The bean and cheese was perfect. The other two had a lot of cheese and not enough loroco and zucchini. The curtido, was not as vinegary as I like. It had a slight sweetness to it. 5 stars - Red, green, and orange salsa. These salsas were amazing. They came with the pupusas and were the perfect pairing to cut through the cheese. The orange salsa was the best of the bunch. It was smoky and spicy. Their chips are great. Lightly salted and not too thick or thin. They were very busy on a Sunday afternoon. The dining area was packed and they had a lot of to-go orders too. After years of searching, I finally found the most perfect tacos in Indiana and a whole lot more. This little non pretentious restaurant in a strip mall features favorites from Latin America such as tamales and taco. But they specialize in pupusas from El Salvador. This was our first visit so we had to try everything. The menu is on the wall and you order at the counter filled with flams and cakes. Most items were $2.50 a la carte. The tables are not fancy and there is limited seated, about 25 seats. Decor is a mix of team and Latin American flags. Servers are friendly and bring chips and salsa to the table. The salsa is homemade. Chips are nothing special. Our water was kept full. The food came out after about 15 minutes. The pupusas were handmade and incredible. I loved the bean pupusa and the table favorite was the chorizo pupusa. Pupusas were served with a pickled slaw which was tasty. The tamales are just incredible. Chicken tamale was wrapped in a banana leaf. Sweet corn tamale was delicious. And I cannot say enough good things about the tacos. Traditional street tacos served on a double corn tortilla, grilled chicken or steak, onions and lots of cilantro and fresh lime. A perfect blend of flavors. A total chameleon! On the eternal quest for the best huevos rancheros in Indy, I happen to be in the area of this restaurant. I noticed on their menu that they do indeed offer huevos rancheros, so why not? Don't let the exterior appearance fool you. I pulled into the parking lot around lunchtime and wasn't quite sure the restaurant was open due to the mirrored film on the windows, but indeed it was. My first impression when I walked in was...wow, clean! The menu was neatly written on a chalkboard and despite the tables being pushed to the side (no dining in due to the pandemic), this place was very tidy and neat. I could see through the curtains to the kitchen and it also looked well-organized and clean. The waiter appeared and took my order, then served my Topo Chico right away. I needed to wash my hands, so I visited their restroom and again was highly impressed at the cleanliness. So much so that I took pix! TL:DR- Best Pupusas in Indy I really think this Pupuseria is the gold standard for pupusas in Indy! I came here for the first time and ordered a few things of their menu to give them a try. It's all take-out only as the dining area has been closed for COVID, so we ordered the Chicharon and Cheese and the Pork, Beans and Cheese pupusas. I also ordered the langua taco and the chicken tamale. For the drinks I decided on the Atol de Elote. The first thing that I noticed when I started eating was that the pupusas were huge and stuffed full of the items that we ordered. Every one that we got was very tasty but the Chicharon was my favorite. They also gave plenty of spicy coleslaw and hot sauce to pair with your items. The tacos were also stuffed full of the lengua. It was perfectly cooked and not chewy at all. The tamales were also tasty and much larger than a typical Mexican tamale. The corn drink was really unique. Cliff notes version: Get the Pupusas, try all of the sauces (the hot and the green are favorites), get some extra pupusas or a burrito to go. I usually wait to review a business until we have had a chance to go a few times and try a few things. Let me just say - at my first visit I ended up with 3 different "meals" because I couldn't decide which I wanted! The server for our first visit ended up being one of the owners, and he was so nice and patient with us. Everything we had was fresh and authentic and amazing and we quickly determined we would be coming back soon before we even finished the first meal. So soon in fact, that we returned less than a week later. Those daggone delicious, hot, hand made bean and cheese papusas were calling my name! The oozed out melted/slightly burnt cheese edges are always my first bite as they are the BEST! But I digress... We have now made the drive and frequented Pupuseria Casa Maria at least once or twice a month when the crave hits - and I always get extra bean and cheese papusas to go as they make amazing re-heated left overs for lunch the next day (or breakfast - no judgement!). The hubs is stuck on the Chicken Fajitas - a little different than a sizzling, smoking iron skillet type dish you may be accustomed to at Mexican restaurants as it is all served on one plate - no sizzle, no smoke. The "tortillas" are also different (for the better) in that they are thicker, heartier, and hand made - like an unstuffed pupusa. The yuca fries are also among the best I have tasted - so light! Pro-tip: get a burrito to go if you have plans that evening as it always makes an amazing post-adult beverage midnight snack. You're welcome. They are always willing to adjust and make dishes without meat and have ALWAYS remembered my husband's allergies when we come in and ensure his food is safe for him to eat. ALWAYS. We tried the steak, pork and chicken pupusas...all came with cheese and all three were delicious! We also tried their steak tacos and Carne Asada. They also were great. In the middle of Indiana, I didn't expect to find the best pupusas ever but I did and it's here. We ordered to go and everything was made to order, so we didn't mind waiting about 10-15 minutes. We got the revuelta, camaron, queso, and chorizo pupusas as well as choco flan, choriqueso dip, and two tacos. The tacos were giant and had a lot of meat, but they weren't the best I've ever had. But the stars of the show were the pupusas and dip. The salsas and slaw pair perfectly with the pupusas. Some of the salsas were pretty spicy and it was amazing. Each pupusa was hot and full of flavor and filling. The camaron was unlike anything I've had - for sure the best one. They definitely did not skimp on the shrimp. In Indy today and craving pupusas. Cannot find Salvadorian food in Bloomington, and this little restaurant is well worth the drive. Very friendly people both working and dining at this restaurant. We walked in and were unclear of how to order so we went to the counter. The owner (?) told us to go ahead and take a seat, he would bring us menus. An older lady who was finishing up her meal with her husband made a point of greeting us and made menu suggestions. She told us she eats there every week. It was great to be made so welcome by a regular. The menu has plenty of choices. Mexican food and Salvadorian food. We chose pupusas and a steak taco. While we waited, we noticed how clean the place is. It is very much like little restaurants we used to eat in when we lived in San Francisco's Mission district. (before the most recent gentrification of that neighborhood) It felt like a bit of a long wait (we were hungry) but you could hear someone actually MAKING the pupusas by hand in the kitchen. The slap slap of the masa in someones hands. WORTH THE WAIT! The food was excellent. I enjoyed the taco and the pupusa. The combination of pork and hot, melted cheese in the pupusa was unbeatable. Next time I would order pupusas only, mainly because I can get a decent street taco locally, but I cannot get pupusas. We decided to have dessert and we shared a slice of the flan.
