With a total area of 21,041 square kilometers, El Salvador, which means "the Savior" and got its…read morename from the Spanish conquistadores, is the tiniest country in Central America between Guatemala and Honduras. Since it is so small, all the popular foods are enjoyed all over the country, from the coast to the mountains. Although it includes ingredients introduced by the Europeans, such as cheese and onions, Salvadoran cuisine still relies heavily on indigenous food, such as beans and corn. If there's one dish that defines Salvadoran food, it's pupusas. From the Nahuatl for "fat tortilla," these thick, handmade corn tortillas are filled with cheese, refried beans, or seasoned meats and then grilled until golden. Topped with curtido (a tangy cabbage slaw) and salsa, they are best eaten for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Located at a strip mall on Passaic Street in Hackensack, Salvadoreño-Santa Fe is a great Salvadorean family-owned/run establishment. Upon arrival as a first-timer, I was greeted by the staff inside this cozy, casual, and clean interior with a handful of tables. The menu features authentic Salvadoran and other Hispanic cuisine. I decided on the Pupusa Loca Grande/Big Pupusa Loca filled with pork, chicken, cheese, and beans. There was a bit of a wait as my meal came out freshly made, perfectly cooked, and authentically tasty. The portion was generous, easily feeding two people; mine could have been for 4 and was reasonably priced. The staff was friendly and had a nice conversation with Cindy. Worth the stop!

I ordered a chicken and mushroom with rice, some pupusas and their carne asada tacos. Pickup was easy and the lady chased me down outside to make sure I got the plantains which was left out of the bag. It was super cold out so I appreciated that she came out in her t shirt lol. The food overall was really good, authentic and I think I enjoyed the tacos the most. The chicken and mushroom was tasty and the pupusas were good. I'm not s huge fan of pupusas usually but figured I'd give it a try. Really good food and not breaking the bank for dinner. I'll be back!

When I asked the lady at the shop if the pupusas were made with peppers hotter than jalapeño, she said they were made with Serrano peppers. Whew, I knew it! I wasn't ready. All of my pupusas were still delicious. My favorite were the beans and cheese. I really also liked the house made curtido slaw the dish came with. I can't wait to have these again someday!

Wow what a hidden gem! I was craving pupusas and I found this hole in the wall spot (it doesn't…read morehave an awning or anything just a window with a sign) that knocked it out of the park! The pupusas were so delicious, cheap and freshly made. I called ahead of time to order and they were ready, neatly packed and hot when I arrived. Each pupusa costs $3 so the whole order of 5 came out to $15 - such a steal! They even throw in some curtido salad and sauces at no additional charge. Their curtido is a little different from the traditional. They add beets to theirs which is unique. For pupusas my husband ordered 3 - 1 jalapeño and cheese and 2 bean. I had 2 of the loroco and cheese. The cheese they use is so delicious! The jalapeño cheese, according to my husband, knocked it out of the park. I loved the loroco and cheese too. I thought the dough was nice and soft with a neutral taste. I like my dough a little more sweet than they make it but it was still good for me. We didn't realize the bean pupusa doesn't have cheese (you can request bean and cheese though) so those were a little on the dryer side but still very flavorful, especially when dipped in the sauces. Definitely adding this place to our takeout rotation. Highly recommend! 5/5
