There's too few pupuserias in Austin! Overall a mediocre food experience, but if you're in the mood for papusas, not much choice for us here. Met up with friends and one of them loved the authentic vibes. When we're the only non-Hispanic people in a relatively full restaurant it's a good sign! Usually "authentic" when on the cheaper side means that it's cheaper quality but full of flavor, as people with lower incomes know how to make great tasting food that's filling for a lower cost - hence how ox tail and po'boys got created and has becomes staples. I can definitely attest it's authentic, however the taste and food quality is a tad lacking. Carne Asada - my friend said... I'm still chewing it when I asked how it was. Definitely low quality piece of beef, however not made any better by the flavor or the way it was cooked. Fried Fish - definitely the star! Slightly overcooked, but still juicy and tender, the fish had an excellent flavor. Warning it can be a lot of work to avoid the bones! (one friend had a tough time, while the other had it eaten in just a few minutes) Papusas - Mediocre. Good enough to fill the craving, however not the best showcase for the famous El Salvadoran dish. Good amount of filling and with ok taste. It could use more salt and be cooked a little crisper on the outside. Make sure to ask for the cabbage topping in case they don't bring it out - it was nice to see that the container for the cabbage had a prep date. Chicharron - Overall a little overcooked, but I feel like this is typically the case every time I've ever had it at any restauraunt. Chewy and overall good flavor. Tortillas - Thick!! And homemade! Yucca - I wish now I had known they had fried yucca, as it's harder to find than one would think in Austin. Make sure to ask for this fried treat, as it's 10x better than French fries! read more

1.10.2026. It was my husband's idea to explore Pupuseria Usuluteca. This place is a very casual mom and pop diner vibe. Service was friendly and the food arrived fast. Two are our friends order the fried fish. One dish had a lot of fish bones while the other did not. Overall it had good flavor but slightly overcooked. My husband ordered the papusas which he was craving for. It was prepared well however slighly bland. As a signature El Salvadoran dish, it was ok. The cabbage topping was a helpful flavor enhancer for this particular dish. The chicharron was slighly overcooked, dry, but had a good flavor to it. read more

The pupusas here are delicious! Freshly made from scratch as soon as you place the order. The variety of native drinks from el Salvador are great. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone that likes to try new food. I do wish this place had more sitting available since it can get crowded and it's hard to get through from one side to the other. Also would appreciate the bathrooms better maintained. read more

I grabbed a breakfast plate, tamale, and some pupusas. OH my lawd, even the beans were delicious (where usually I find that to be the blandest part). Perfectly pickled veggies, a fall of the leaf tamale, and a dayum good pupusa! The flavors were 10/10. For the nitty gritty, the price range is no more than most places now-a-days, and overall cheaper. I only grabbed take-out, but as far as that goes, no notes from me. A mom and pop shop. Not the fanciest restaurant so heads up. I had puposas and they were made on the spot and super delicious. They were bigger than what I'm used to, but no complaints there lol The curtido (which I am picky about) was really good! They let you grab as much as you wanted where in other places I've been too it's a limited portion. If you are craving salvadorian food I recommend this place to get your fix. I would prefer a nicer sit down restaurant that makes it homier and more comfortable, but for now this will do. read more

These are very delicious pupusas--mine were bean and cheese. However there was a stapler in one of my pupusas and I notified the manager that this was not right, I shouldn't have to worry about what's in my food. I told her I didn't want to make a big deal, so I pulled her to the side, while I also provided her with the stapler. I support small business but this was scary for me. I was eating in the parking lot in case I wanted more--but that was enough for the day. read more

I've been ordering from here for a couple years now and not only are the pupusas tasty af, but the value is incredible. I call in the order and do takeout almost always so I can share the tasty food with family/friends. The pupusas are the size of a face which is awesome. My go to order is three pupusa revueltas + chicharrón con yuca frita. The pupusas are juicy and the meat to cheese ratio is *chef's kiss*. Honestly just good home cooking that takes me back to being a kid and eating pupusas with my neighbors. Chicharrón con yuca frita is well fried, crispy and so tender. The curtido is pickled to perfection and I love that they serve you a bunch cause I slather it on my pupusas. The salsa roja that's also included is fresh tasting and we'll made. Really love this spot and I noticed they moved into a larger location next to original which is super awesome for then cause they serve great food in a timely manner and the price point you can't beat! read more

Some of the most authentic, delicious pupusas I've ever had! Previously I had to always ask my Salvadorian friend to have her husband make them for me... now I can go get them myself whenever I want. Maybe I have high expectations for pupusas... I'm new to Austin by way of Los Angeles and after having pupusas from here twice, I realize they just weren't it. The masa is grainy, the chicharrón has a bizarre stringy texture, and the filler beans are bland. The curtido is nothing to write home about; it wasn't fresh and crisp and lacked the pop of flavor from vinegar. Extremely slow service It's disappointing having to wait 45 minutes for a small order of food for yourself and then having people who come AFTER you with many orders get their food first. Placed my order at 1:50pm and was told it would take 40 minutes, order was still not ready at 2:50 and was told to wait a little more. Waited 15 more minute and just left. Food so far has been good but customer service needs improvement. These are not pupusas, this is bland masa with unseasoned beans and bland pork shoulder. Get the revuelta with chicharrón, cheese and bean! Then, proceed to grab a jug of curtido (fermented slaw), a bottle of salsa, and some clean tongs from the fridge in the back and dig in! First of all, I was excited to eat here. (October 5, 2019 at 8:05AM) I've ordered $60 worth of food and tip $10 to the cashier. Everything was fine and great. Until we saw cockroaches by the wall near the tables almost by my plate!!! Definitely a safety concern. I tried not to embarrassed them right away, but told the owner sister about the issue privately. And she gave us the number for both owners to speak too, they both were rude, they said they inspected every week and even named what days but truth is... food inspectors for food handlers won't tell you when they arrive, they had no proof of last time they came to see if this place was sanitized. Even worst, my pupusas beans were undercook and my very concern was the fish being undercook cause I know they got it pretty out fast definitely did not taste the same. I got food poison and not here bash this place but they need be more sanitized and cook their food right ! Especially when you spend money over $50 (most of the stuff here are cheap ) and tip the cashier more than a $1 tip. I will file a complaint towards this place cause I got sick and it's super dirty!!! Fix this shit by caring about the customers who loves Salvadoran food as much as I do. My family is from El Salvador. I spent every summer in El Salvador growing up and these pupusas are the closest you can get to home in Austin TX. Best bang for the buck because they are huge pupusas. If you're looking for breakfast their topics desayuno is bomb and if your looking for soup they have good soups as well. read more
