Came from out of town & chose to try this place out since we had seen a Facebook video of this place & it looked good! But I left disappointed. food was overpriced I wouldn't have mind if the food actually tasted good. We got the menudo usually were I'm from serving it was the hamony is pretty usual I got a bowl of broth & just menudo which I was ok with but I definitely had to add lots of salt to get a good taste. We got a barbacoa taco & it was lacking taste just overall wasn't good. Chilaquiles were ok anytime I see a place with red ones that the salsa isn't just tomato based I get excited these were made with actual dried red chiles but the salsa just wasn't it for me! Definitely could have been better. Lastly for a "tortilleria" the tortillas or chips weren't the best, I tried the flour and corn & I've had better elsewhere fersure. We left with our plates practically full the only thing I actually finished was my canned soda. I definitely wouldn't recommend. Left leaving like it was a waste of money. La cajera desde el principio fue muy grosera, si estoy bien el recibo decía que se llamaba María J., no se como se llamaba la otra muchacha. Our group of four ordered four breakfast tacos and four drinks and the total bill was $23. So while it is true that the wall menu doesn't list prices... it's a great deal for tasty tacos. It's hard to beat fluffy scrambled egg wrapped in fresh tortillas that are toasty warm. We were back again this morning buying more breakfast tacos. On my way into the shop, the guy coming said "this is the best taco shop in town!" This is a local favorite! They proudly sell authentic Mexican food, especially their gorditas with any of their wide array of salsas. Be prepared to hear your number in Spanish. Get homemade flour tortillas or homemade tortilla chips by the bag. It's hard to beat their $2 tacos. I LOVE the white cheese they use if you pay 50 cents more- worth it. For you Mexicanos out there, here's the skinny after just one visit. I'll be back and will report further findings. - The corn tortillas have flour in them. Let's just call them tortillas híbridas. This makes for flakey corn tortillas but outstanding chips. - The Mexican "pink" rice is outstanding. - The chiles rellenos are filled with your choice of melty cheese or picadillo. They are beautifully bathed in a batter and fried but they come with no sauce! Still, at $7 for the chile, beans, chips and Mexican rice combo, this is a steal. Use take out and make your own sauce at home. - There are about six salsa choices... from spicy to "let's burn this city down." They roast their tomatoes (yum!). - The place was nearly full when we got there and nearly full when we left and this in the afternoon. Everyone there appeared to be Mexican. Stopped in for a quick bite while waiting for a friend nearby just to check it out and was pleasantly surprised at the freshness of the homemade tortillas. The were spanking hot too! which means they came right off the press in the kitchen, which you could see the entire tortilla-making factory process right in front of you. There is a small bar of toppings that you could add to your items, but I didn't see it until after I was done so that was a bit disappointing, but trying just the tacos themselves with tortilla and meat was actually an experience in itself to really taste the individual ingredients. Prices are cheap, and it's not a fancy place but the food was authentic and homemade, so it was worth the experience of checking it out. read more

A coworker told me Rio Grande is the best for homemade tortillas. I finally had reason to go. I bought one package each of flour and corn. Flour tortillas come in a plastic bag w/their logo, but corn tortillas are only wrapped in white paper ... wonder why. That's okay, I can place them in a food storage bag. Corn tortillas had to be fresh, they were still hot! Corn tortillas about as thick as store bought but taste infinitely better. :) Plenty of salsas to choose from, I selected salsa de molcajete. OMG! It's so good! Plenty of "kick" and the more you eat, the more you mouth sizzles/burns. It will be used up in less than a week. I also ordered a queso y rajas gordita (no photo) .. it was not skimpy and tasted great! Small store, sign on door about mandatory masks. The plain pollo taco was anything but. When a taco joint can get a chicken taco right (not dry but deliciously flavorful) then you know that it's good. The variety of desayunos is also plenty. Not the best neighborhood - BUT super authentic and delicious! We came here because I was really craving some homemade tortillas. This place came up and I had to try it. Everyone had masks on except for the few people that were eating. You have to spend at least $5 to be able to pay with a credit card. We bought some homemade salsa as well and it had the perfect amount of kick to it! The tortillas were delicious and had a great flavor. They were not thick like some homemade tortillas are... This place was recommended to me after I asked around wanting to eat tacos from a place with homemade tortillas. Let's talk about their food. I ordered bean and cheese tacos and it took about 10 minutes to come. The tacos were hot and delicious. I mean really so good. Just exactly what I was looking for. The salsa bar is small. The green salsa was okay and the other red one with big chunks of stuff in it was blah. I love places with salsa bars but this bar didn't impress. Do not order their coffee. You can get better coffee at a 7-eleven. It was a waste. Order the bottled Mexican coke instead. I would have given it a 4 star had I felt welcome...I was not. I think if you don't speak Spanish, don't expect to be a part of the crowd. The girl at the counter spoke to me in Spanish but quickly switched to English once she realized I wasn't a Spanish speaker. Which was nice. However, the customers weren't really that friendly and one lady even stole my table to join it with another for her huge party. I thought that was rather rude. You don't bus your own trays. Which is good because I tipped. However, they do not come clean up quick. The place started filling up and four tables still had leftovers from previous patrons. The decor is basic and pretty bland. Unable to get food due to the location being closed. Although the operating hours states 6am & people being inside, the doors were locked. The sad part of it all was the fact that the people looked my direction and instead of opening the doors they continued to talk away. The strange thing about this review is that since I found Tortilleria Rio Grande, I go here a lot, but am still fluctuating between a 3 and 4-star rating. How can I think about 3-starring a place I continually go to? Let me explain... First, I totally don't mind the counter-service ordering, and having to pick up my own when my number is called. Make no mistake. This isn't really a restaurant. It's a tortilla factory that happens to serve food. The sheer volume of people coming to grab freshly made tortillas, and the parade of folks picking up coolers filled with tortillas (and barbacoa) on a Saturday afternoon for their abuela's 80th birthday party, family reunion picnic, or quinceañera, is quite impressive. Seeing the coolers just lined up in the back hallway cracks me up. And speaking of counter-service... for Pete's sake, just hold onto your receipt. You'll have to be fluent in Spanish enough to identify the last two digits of your order number when it's called, and it will be inspected when you get to the counter to grab your stuff. Just think of it as the Costco exit, and you'll be fine. I've never had a "language issue" when ordering. What keeps me coming back to this little hole-in-the-wall? Easy. Possibly the best corn tortillas I have ever had. And this is coming from a flour tortilla slut. The refried beans are also very tasty. I crave the bean and cheese "gordita" (though I wish it had a TOUCH more bean/cheese), which is like a "bean/cheese sandwich" but made with slightly thicker (yet light) hand-pressed corn tortillas. My wife describes the picadillo (ground beef) enchiladas as "the best enchiladas she has ever had". At around $7, it's an artistic looking plate (well, styrofoam container, if you're getting to go) that is easily two meals for her. So, to summarize, what's great? - the corn tortillas, which for a gluten-free person like my wife, is huge - the beans - the white "Mexican" cheese - the bean and cheese gordita or the enchilada plate, made with said corn tortillas, beans, and "queso blanco" - the bags of chips. Simple quartered corn tortillas, fried and salted. And by "simple", I mean "horrifically delicious". It will pain me the next time I have to eat "Tostitos" at someone's party. - the vibe... Seeing so many families makes me smile - the prices (though at almost 2 bucks, and the same cost as the dinner tacos, the breakfast tacos are about 25 cents or so more than I'd expect) What's not so great? - the wait. I think they only have the one lady working the kitchen. So the food comes out in order, and I'm not sure she is multitasking much. I expect a 15-20 minute wait whenever I go. And with only a short bench and nine tables, there isn't a lot of place to wait for your to-go order. - the temperature. The AC can probably keep up with summer heat OR the heat from the tortilla machines, but not really both. It can get quite warm on a summer afternoon when both machines are pumping. - the flour tortillas. I'm just not in love with them. They're a little too smooth and a little less flavorful than I'd want them to be. - the breakfast tacos. At least the time I tried, the eggs were a little overdone/browned, which is criminal. So, grab a bottle of Mexican Coke and your lunch/dinner, or just stop by for your corn tortilla/chip needs. 3 1/2 stars, rounded up to 4. read more

First thing I noticed is that this place is as legit as it gets. There's ice cream, Mexican candy, tortillas, tortilla chips, sodas for sale out in the front. I mean does it get any more legit than that?? Then there's a menu over the counter where they sell tacos, gorditas, and plates. A pretty good deal. A taco/gordita is about $2 something. I got 2 gorditas - 1 guisado and one pollo. The guisado was SO good. I mean I cannot wait to go back there and order 3 more of these. Additionally, the gordita is top notch. Wavering between the tacos and gorditas? GET THE GORDITA! You will not regret it. After ordering at the counter, they will call your number on your receipt in Spanish. It's ok, as long as you know basic spanish numbers you should be able to follow it, and they will check your receipt for you. 10/10 I will come back here because these satisfied my tacos cravings above and beyond. There's a Jack in the Box in front of it. Deciding between the two? Trying to decide if you want to get out of the car? Get out of the car and get some gorditas!!! There's a reason this place is rated so highly. You know the moment when you go out to eat and you realize that it was SO worth it to go out and eat? That you could never make something this good? It's close to 3.5 stars, definitely better than just A-OK. And if I'm ever in the area in need of some breakfast tacos I'd definitely hit this place up. So let me work my way up the scale: The ambiance: 2.5 stars. It's not pretty, it's plain with hard tables and chairs, nothing special, and A/C-? Fuggetaboutit. Clean bathrooms? Ehhh. The service: 3 stars. Not too friendly or overly helpful. The downer here was there were only 2 customers (including me) and it took forEVA to get my 2 breakfast tacos. I mean forEVA, and nobody seemed to care. It's like I got lost into the Abyss. The food: 4 stars. I got 1 egg & bacon and 1 egg & potato, one flour and the other corn. Both tortillas were the highlight - - fresh and they were making them right there in front of me. I got a good amount of egg but the bacon was greasy and chewy - - ehhh. Not very appetizing. Salsa / Condiment bar is awesome - - help yourself to red (the best) and green, plus limes, onions, and cilantro. I love it when I can choose my condiments, and I love their red sauce (it's like roasted). The price: 4.25 stars. It's competitively priced here, I'd say good value for the $. ok here we go.. I rarely have time in my household to make myself breakfast..I mean let's face it. I have 2 kids, a hubs, who many times, acts as my 3rd child. The place is very Mexican, very fresh and very tasty. They have a vast order of tacos, from breakfast to lunch/dinner, and gorditas. They vary from tongue, picadillo, chicharron en salsa verde, barbacoa, etc. While you order, behind the counter is a larger than life tortilla machine making fresh tortillas to be sold by the kilogram. The place is a bit rundown, hence the lack of five stars, and should have somebody cleaning the tables but, everybody enjoys their time in there, there is no rush, we are in Mexico time ! The girl that works the register, at least that day, was very friendly and had a very coquette rose on her hair, come on, that is so folkloric and beautiful. Does not get more authentic than this. First off, they make their chips, flour, corn, and gorditas by hand. All equally delicious. They also serve some of the best salsas in town, specifically the molcajete (which they sell in bulk). They're also fresh and constantly refilled. We recommend the bean/cheese, barbacoa, lengua and picadillo tacos (or gorditas) because that is everything we tried. Next time we'll certainly try the rest of the menu. We made three separate transactions our first visit here because we kept wanting more and they did not disappoint. Oh and if you're not convinced yet, they have amazing flavored churros along with an array of Mexican sodas, including my favorite, the rare and elusive -- Joya Manzana (apple) soda. read more

Barbacoa is either cheek or tongue meat, what we got was obviously stewed chuck meet. It was tough, brown (not black like barbacoa always is) and tasted blander than my mother in law's worst cooking.
