Was in the area for a summer outdoor concert and decided to try a Salvadorian Pupusa. I would describe it as the perfect picnic food. Bought 3 and 2 was very filling. No mess. It's like a taco hybrid but much, much better. The filing is all enclosed inside. I did not try the Curtido/Pickled Slaw until I got home & this was so incredible with rice (Hawaiian style) This place is a must try if you are in the area. Service was very helpful. So much oil in these pupusas that I'm actually surprised the marines didn't show up to invade the place. To top it off the oil had a rancid taste in my mouth, after decades of being a foodie I have become very good at knowing when places don't switch out the oil enough. I don't usually write too many average or poor reviews mainly because I believe in everyone getting second chances. The following review is based primarily on customer service and not at all the food. I love tacos and we all wanted authentic mini tacos and after searching Yelp for local establishments, we came upon this small restaurant. Parking was easy and I actually passed by the unassuming locale because I wasn't really paying attention. When I entered, I wasn't greeted for quite some time as the hostess was busy eating behind the second counter and definitely saw the customers who came in but was in absolutely no rush. Eating and licking your fingers and then coming out to address the customers without washing your hands is quite off putting. It was already getting late but we still wanted to order from here to go. We ended up ordering tons of tacos as well as guacamole and chips all to go. We had to be rung up twice due to a miscount on the size of our order. The food as expected was cooked quickly in the rear and really was great tasting. The authentic guacamole was great as well. The rating will solely be for lack of customer service and complete lethargic demeanor with potential customers. read more

Came here with my husband and two young children. They had a kids menu which is always a plus. Chicken fingers were homemade and the kids liked them. Horchata was really sweet but still good, and I loved the agua de maracuya. The salsas were ok, but the curtido was delicious. We got the sample plate to try different things. The pupusas were amazing, we tried the steak and the loroco. Empanadas were good (we tried the beef and the chorizo) but needed more filling. The tamales were delicious also - the masa had really good flavor. Tried the chipilin and the chicken. Fried yuca with chicharron was just ok. Would love to go back and try some other things. Never going back again. I placed an order for pick up upon arrival the restaurant refused to give me the order stating I had to confirm for food. I had never been asked that when picking up an already paid order for carry out. Called my sister just to make sure and the server said " a pinche actitud, pinche Mexicans can't do anything". At this time I turned around and left without my food. There was another customer with her kids and she was apologizing to me for the way the person acted. She even said please please do not think that all Salvadorians act the same way....there are good ones out there....she then went on to tell me that she was treated badly as well and the server was cursing nonstop infront of her kids. She even stated that since they arrived to dine-in she was tossing the food and drinks at them and was giving a bad attitude. Their food is always piping hot and delicious. It's been a while but I usually order their 3 pupupsita combo.

It's pretty small and not really an attention grabber. Food is okay. If I do ever decide to go back it'll definitely be for to go.

I'm giving it twostars because the quality was average and they forgot to give me one thing I ordered. I ordered 3 pupusas - chicken and cheese, steak and cheese, pork and cheese. We could barely distinguish based on the taste which was which. The chicken has strips of chicken so that was maybe the only way we could tell it was chicken. The pupusa was very bland and oily. You really have to dress it up with something to enjoy the pupusa. Also, the size of the pupusa is very small for the price. We ordered chicken tamales and realized it wasn't in the bag when we got home. We also had some smoothies. It was also ok for the price. We were up in Libertyville so we tried to find something different. What we found was "Pupusita Express" in Lake Zurich. It looked good on Yelp 4 1/2 stars. We took a chance and drove 20 minutes to get there. Pupusita is a Salvadorian restaurant. They close at 8 pm on Saturday so we called first to make sure they would take us after driving there. They were very gracious and took us even though we go there at about 7:40. I went there with my wife and sister. My wife and I ordered the Tortilla Soup. This was more broth with vegetables unlike the Mexican tortilla soup which is more of a bean based soup w/crispy tortillas in the soup. It was just ok. We also ordered Pupusa which was unlike anything I ever ate before. The Pupusa was like a 4" tortilla frisbee filled with pork and cheese. It was kind of different, but nothing to write home about. My sister ordered the empanada deep fried with pork. This was pretty good, but my favorite dish was the tamale wrapped in banana leaves. Delicious flavoring Would I go back? NOT TACOS We we're starving while driving on the road. We had just left a party that lacked food and needed a meal before we all passed out. I broke out the Yelp app and this place appeared. At first I thought it was Mexican food but then quickly noticed it was Honduran food. I thought that this would be a great culinary experience to try something new. We were starving and after looking at the menu nothing was really familiar to us so we went with a staple of tortilla chips and guacamole. We needed food ASAP. I really loved the flavor of the guac and the chips were very tasty. They also refilled our chips at no extra charge which I thought was really nice. Sometimes when a place charges for chips they don't do free refills. My little one is a huge soup fan and never says no to a fresh bowl. She ordered the Smokey Tortilla Chicken Soup made with fresh tomatoes, garlic, onions and chicken with chipotle peppers, cheddar and tortilla strips. She absolutely loved it. I was able to sneak a spoon and it was really yummy. My wife ordered a vegetarian squash and Cheese Pupusas. The pupusas was like a crepe or quesadilla filled with veggies. It was very different from anything we have ever eaten in a restaurant. It also came with a mason jar of Spicy Fermented Cabbage & jalapeño salsa. This jar was the bomb. I honestly could have grabbed a fork and eaten the whole jar at the table. My wife even said, "We need to learn how to make this!" Our food runner told us that we are suppose to eat the cabbage with the pupusas. But why stop there? It was so good I added it to my chips and salsa and even my sandwich. I went with the ribeye sandwich with grilled onions, peppers, lettuce & tomato with a side of fried potatoes. The potatoes were really good but my little one seemed to claim them so I handed them off. The sandwich was okay. I love ribeye because it is a flavor rich cut of meat. The cut of steak was very thin and then over cooked. I am not a fan of killing my cow twice. This sandwich is similar to a torta. I added the salsa and the spicy fermented cabbage on the sandwich in order for it to taste better. The fermented cabbage is money here and can fix anything. In fact, I am hypnotized by its taste. This place was exactly what we needed...food. Everything was cooked fresh to order. There was a counter to order food at, then a food runner would bring your dishes as they were ready. I typically don't have a problem with that in a fast casual environment. Our food runner was also really nice answering all of our stupid questions about Honduran food. There were also other people dinning which is always a great sign. The Mexican restaurant a few doors down was completely empty which shows me that we picked the right place in the strip mall to eat at. I am glad that we were able to experience new authentic food. Would we drive here just to eat? Probably not considering it is an hour away from our house. But if I was in the area I would definitely come back for the spicy fermented cabbage. How grateful I am to my fellow Yelpers for finding and posting reviews for Pupusita Express! My friend and I were looking for something different for lunch in the LZ area and as this got good reviews we decided to give it a go. Neither of us had had Central American food before and had no idea what the heck a Pupusita was! The super sweet girl at the counter was so helpful and patient explaining the different menu items that we were unfamiliar with. We ended trying a sampling of items-- the traditional Pupusita, which is masa stuffed with pork and cheese, flattened and pan grilled (ok, more like pan fried!)...simply delicious! The spicy chicken tamale is to die for...not your often found dried up tamale in a corn husk but instead rolled in banana leaves and very moist with just the right amount of heat, not overkill. The salsa is fresh and DELICIOUS! I could drink the stuff. The bean and rice mix was really well seasoned and although I'm not a great fan of beans I happily finished my generous serving. My friend tried the tortilla crusted tilapia and she said it was done perfectly-- nice crunch on the outside with the fish still moist inside. The prices are very reasonable (for $6 or $7 you can get a combo and go away very full), the food is fresh and well prepared. The restaurant itself is not fancy but it's kept very clean. I've no doubt that I'll be back here as a regular. read more

Enjoyed carryout with a combo for lunch. Asada pupusa and yucca fries were very good. I did not care for the side salad or the veggie pastel. Gluten free options, and smoothies looked delicious. This place makes me so mad! I'm ashamed of them and im a Salvadoran sister myself. Their pupusas are so freaking small and they are $3.25 each. I ordered three and I didn't even get full AT ALL!!! Their menu is just awful expensive. So now I have to continue making the hour drive to a great Salvadoran restaurant where the pupusas are way bigger and for $1.85 each. For $3.25 it needs to be the size of my head. There's no way this place will make it and they just moved in. The good thing is they serve Mexican food too and their tacos are $2 bucks. Was excited to see that a Salvadoran restaurant had opened nearby. Before hand I was driving about 20 miles just for some decent pupusas. Food is pretty good, definitely authentic but I will say that they're a bit pricey in some parts of the menu for what you get. I will be back but it'll be with caution, so that I don't overspend, and get my fix for some pupusas and pasteles but I definitely won't expect to get full. Some of the more traditional plates seem to be in line, price wise, with everyone else so nothing special there yet like I had mentioned, food is good.
