If you haven't tried the Russian Sawmill, you must! Coffee is always good here. So is the lunch menu! The baked goods are less consistent. But still likely to put a smile on your face. Bonus points for sometimes playing really great music. I am pretty sure e listened to an entire Tyler Childer's album there one day. read more

Purdy's is located in downtown Richmond in a beautiful - I can't stress that enough - walk-up adjacent to the street. On an epic do-nothing sort of day, a friend of mine recommended that we stop in for a sweet treat and I obliged because I had never been. Walk in through the front door and the coffee shop space extends well toward the back of the building. Seating is immediately to your left and right. I really liked the blend between working "leave me alone" seats versus more deliberately intimate spots for friends to chill and hang out. I also liked that the space is well-utilized. They fit a fun single low chair and a beautiful all-wood two-top table in each window sill. Go to the counter and you'll find a display for pastries and a mix of traditional and specialty coffee drinks on the overhead menu. The specialty menu was interesting: a coffee drink with bourbon-infused sorghum and a spicy blend were two among six advertised. I had an iced latte; my friend had an iced mocha, light on the syrup. The barista was really polite, got my friend's syrup preference right, and filled our orders quickly -- walk up to get it. He also encouraged us to sign up for the rewards program. Spend $3 on any coffee drink to earn a star; ten stars gets you a freebie. If you supply your phone number, you get notifications of star earnings and receipts texted to you. (I'm glaring at you, Starbucks, whom I love deeply but you have to get 125 "stars", or spend $62.50, to get a freebie by comparison.) Speaking of value, Purdy's honors the additional $0.25 discount when you check in through Yelp. It took a moment to ring up, but the wait was fine; no big deal. Since you can't miss the upstairs, I went up there to check it out. VERY cool. There is ample room to work or study (see the pictures), which I imagine would be tapped especially during the school year. I also chuckled that they had fans going, though I wonder how stuffy the space might get if they weren't going at full blast. After the Yelp discount interaction, Kara, a co-owner, made polite conversation with me. She apologized for taking extra time to figure out how to do the check-in discount. She explained that her register set-up required her to manually assign a percent, not a cent-value. I thought not a thing about it, and it evolved into a delightful conversation about college students, street parking, and clapping back at folks who think a cappuccino and a gas station syrup bomb version of it are the same thing. Went there for the first time yesterday looking for a nice place to study and drink some coffee. I tried the Great White Pumpkin and it was delicious. I have been wanting another all day. They stayed fairly busy, but it was a nice place to study for a couple of hours. Next time I will try some food because it looked really good. read more

I like this place. Like Starbucks they are not only expensive but completely lacking with any level of service. For a comparison I would rate Starbucks with 2 stars. These coffee shops seem confused. They always have a tip jar or an opportunity to tip, but tipping is what you do for service and to all these coffee shops that is completely absent. This place does however serve you on a plate and not a paper bag. Coffee is good, atmosphere is great. Stay away from the Vietnamese coffee, they don't know what they are doing and they've never been to Viet nam. Cold brew tastes bitter and acidic, ice down a hot brew instead. Lattes are stylish, fun, and good. Food is very simple and looks good, but on the pricey side. read more

Always fast, friendly service at Purdy's. The staff always pays attention to detail, and they make the orders accordingly. I would like to be able to go in and enjoy a cup of coffee, but unfortunately covid restrictions is preventing that. I understand it is not Purdy's fault for not allowing customers to dine in during covid, but I just really like the aesthetic of the interior of this coffee house. I usually judge a good coffee shop by how many shots go into their 20oz, then I work my way down service, decor, etc... Starbucks and most cheap coffee houses are at 2 shots forcing me to get an extra. The decent and better places will offer 3. Purdy's offers 4! On top of that the decor is current age classic with hipster accents. Offering games and a very comfortable and friendly atmosphere. Located right on the main street thru town (and on the way to this weeks job), I do believe I've found my goto coffee shop for this week. Oh, and by the way, their coffee tastes awesome. Very cute place. I got the bee latte. Flavor wise flavors blended together well and not overly sweet, but for me personally it doesn't have a real strong espresso flavor to this drink. Even adding an extra shot I'm not sure how strong it would be. There was no wow factor unfortunately. For someone who doesn't like strong espresso in lattes or iced drinks then this one is a good one to choose. read more

What an ideal quaint small town coffee shop! Very tranquil and a great place to relax and have a Beekeeper coffee drink. Kara was so helpful and full of energy!!! They not only have great coffee, but also some pretty good food. I've had a couple of their sandwiches and they're pretty tasty. However, the star of the show is their cinnamon rolls, which I always take a couple to go for tomorrow's breakfast !!! read more

I recommend The Old Kentucky Bourbon Latte, a drink unique to Purdy's. I order it each time that I visit, which, unfortunately, is infrequently. There are two levels, both with ample seating. The employees are super friendly and brought our sandwiches up to us on the second floor. There is a huge table with a nice flat screen up here. Great price to cap it off. Just a traveler looking for wifi to do some work! Overall, good atmosphere, coffee, and clean bathrooms! Plenty of space as well. Playlist was pretty on point. Purdy's is a regular for our family. We often order coffee and food from here and everything we order is always excellent. The staff is always amazing and friendly. We have never had an issue with a wrong order and we usually go there at least twice a week. They are COVID-19 responsible and often self impose restrictions even though not required by local/state requirements. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for great food or great coffee. read more

One morning I woke up in Berea Kentucky. I could swear just the night before I was in Washington state. Slowly over time I accepted my fate. I got a job and a house I even developed my own spoon bread recipe. I was unsure if my big city life was a dream then I walked into Purdy's. One sip of their excellent coffee and all the memories of my previous coffee life came flooding back. Purdy's is a warm inviting place. And the coffee is just amazing.
