I'm always blown away by the attention to detail and patience Kyle and Arounkone provide when I'm in the shop with small questions, minor repairs, bike fittings, or just asking general advice. I never feel like I'm being sold to. In fact, I feel like they don't charge enough for the services they provide. Recently my wife and I did bike fittings with Arounkone. The sessions were extremely helpful, detail oriented and not rushed at all. We learned a lot from him. He trains elite cycling teams and is an engineer, so he has a lot to offer in terms of insights and knowledge. Despite the high level of services and expertise that Kyle and Arounkone bring to the table, their services and sales are extremely reasonable. I always leave pleasantly suprised when I get the bill, which rarely happens these days. It's a high-end bike shop with low-end prices! I highly recommend this bike shop! read more

DO NOT GO HERE, Owner is a scam artist. Here is Proof! We bought 2 Diamond Back Hybrid bikes, about 5 yrs back from Dick Sporting goods. Worked like a champ everyday. 2 weeks ago, 2 of my spokes broke, on the Tow Path. Did a search and "Pure Energy Cycling" had good ratings, so I called them up and asked how much would this be and how long would it take? The owner said $30 bucks and drop the rim off, we'll call you when its ready. Two days later I dropped it off, he tagged it and said it would be $60. I told him, I called 2 days ago and you said it was $30. He rephrased his statement, and said "the maximum" repair would $60. I said ok and dropped it off. A week passed, I checked Amazon and Walmart, they sell 36 stainless steel spokes kit for 15.99. I proceeded back to the store (prepared to pick it up if ready) and he indicated "We would call when its ready", I said "I wanted the rim back". He said ok and indicated, the "Sprocket it stripped". I said, there was nothing wrong with the sprocket and I only wanted the 2 spokes replaced. He gave me the rim, as I was walking out, I noticed few things different, I said "This is not my rim", it has a different decal and I didn't remember the hub being black. He said look at the tag, its yours. Got home and looked at our 2 bikes, all HUBs are brushed nickel and thicker. (see pics to verify), now I have my rear wheel with a black skinny hub and the wing nut that tightens the rim to the frame, is CHROME! Clearly this rim is not mine, but I think they took my Sprocket and HUB and replaced it with a bad one, that's why he mentioned "my sprocket is stripped". Nice place to rent a bike! The rate was $40 for the entire day (10-5) which I thought was very fair. The guys at the store were very helpful and friendly. The bike was pretty comfortable, especially on smoother parts of the canal towpath trail where I took it. It was more of a street bike than a trail bike so on bumpy sections, it was not great, but overall I had a great time. Bike rental came with a lock and a helmet so I was able to stop for lunch and ride the steam train too. I highly recommend this place. read more

I have ordered two terrific bikes from Pure Energy in the last 10 years. The first one is still running great. Over the years I have really beat it up, but Arunkone and Kyle are 100% professionals, who are expert at adjusting and servicing your equipment. The store gets its name in that it also sells coffee and soft drinks. It has a couch and a very welcoming environment to drop by and just pick up cycling tips -- even/especially if you are a rank beginner (as I was/am). I highly recommend that everyone should avoid mail-order and give their business to the great local bike shops that Pure Energy exemplifies. Let me set the stage...I'm new to cycling and was given a bike by my wife's cousin. I'm 5'9" (on a good day) and he is over 6' with a completely different body frame. After reading some of the past reviews, I contacted Arounkone to schedule a bike fitting. I was welcomed into the shop by the friendly staff and was immediately comfortable with Arounkone...his knowledge of cycling, physiology, and engineering was impressive. After taking some measurements and installing some ordered parts, the bike fitting was complete. I am extraordinarily happy with the fitting and enjoying cycling around Hunterdon County...adding miles to each ride I take. I highly recommend this shop... they are friendly, accommodating, knowledgeable, affordable and most importantly do quality work. If you are new to cycling, this is your spot. Arounkone is one cool dude. An ambassador to all things cycling, his passion is to advocate for a car-free lifestyle. The Good: The guy is a people guy and really believes in his role in effecting change. He doesn't want you to just come in and buy a bike you'll ride a few times and never stop in again. Rather I believe he sees himself and his business playing a vital role in the community by doing their best to ensure that the bike you buy is one that has you choosing to ride over driving as much as possible. He's also ridden the racing circuits and done endurance stuff, if your serious about getting to the finish line they can set you up too. The Bad: Can't think of anything bad. They carry a good variety of killer brands. You don't like anything there, or want to expand beyond what they do have, then they are happy to receive your online orders and put them together for you. Oh, and the coffee is good too. The Ugly: Could be me and my wallet! There is no rip-off here, it's all cool stuff and well priced! It's just that there is a lot of it and I am going to want it all! read more

Went to Pure Energy Cycling to pick up a few cleat wedges. They're basically thin sheets of plastic that are placed under a cycling cleat to align the knee. Online you can buy a kit that includes 8 wedges as well as long bolts for ~ $25. Pure Energy charged me $5 per wedge! I should have walked out instead of buying them. I've never been to this bike shop before then, but was in the area at the time. I am not a repeat customer, so the owner had no reason to cut me a deal. But, ripping people off is no way to get repeat business. Will not be back, and will not recommend. read more

We were actually doing laundry next door, but visited the java shop to grab a coffee. The proprietor was very friendly and asked if we were doing laundry. We said yes and offered his comfy chairs while we waited. We had noticed him in the laundromat while we were loading. We thought he may be the proprietor of the laundromat, we mentioned we were having issues with a machine, he stated he knew the owner and would give him a call. We chit chatted a minute and he offered to refund the lost money himself. Because of his personal service and his above and beyond demeanor, I would not hesitate returning to the shop again for coffee or bicycle services. read more

This is a great shop! I had a longstanding repair need that would have involved a three-week wait where I live. When I was on a pleasure ride along the Delaware River one afternoon, I came across this store on my way out of Lambertville, and when I explained my situation, they invited me to make an appointment to come back for the repair. I was able to have my bike fixed in less than 45 minutes and now I'm back on the road with a set of new brakes and working shifters! I went to Pure Energy Cycling & Java House to have a shoe/cleat fitting by Arounkone (back in May 2018). He took his time to make sure each cleat was set correctly based on the motion of my legs when peddling. When he was done my new shoes/cleats felt amazing over my old ones, and the proof was using them in a 100-mile bike race 3 weeks later. Today I went to have my Tribike (which I recently purchased used) adjusted to fit to me and get new peddles. Once again Arounkone exceeded all expectations getting me dialed into the bike. I was quite disappointed to be talked down to apparently because I didn't look like a ""cyclist". The sales person peered at me from head to toe as I told him I was looking for a hybrid for my husband. He brought out a worn rental (he said it was used a "couple of times") and tried to sell it to me for $500, then $400. I have been cycling throughout the world for over 50 years and I llove cycling because I enjoy people, nature and exercise. I don't need a "Ferrari" bike, padded pants or stiff cleat shoes and I really don't like cyclist snobs. I had purchased my current bike at this shop 2 years ago, but I will never buy even a cup of coffee there again. read more

Came here to rent some bikes for some canal cruising. The store is conveniently located so easy to get to town and to the bike route along the canal. The staff was friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The bikes we rented were well maintained, worked well and came with a free helmet. I have had both of my bikes serviced here and they were very helpful. They are on top of their customer service. I went in this weekend to start shopping for a new bike, and I will say that they were super about the whole thing. I made it clear at the start that I was just starting my search.Kyle asked me a bunch of relevant questions about my current riding, future plans, past injuries, aches/pains, what I was looking for in a bike, price range, and measured me for a new bike. He did not push a sale, but said that they would research and get back to me with options. He explained a lot about components and sizing, and what was available in certain price ranges. I did not feel "talked down to", even though I am a fairly casual rider. Good experience overall. The shop is neat and organized, I did not have the coffee, nor did I really review the bikes that were there. I'll see what they come back with.
