I was visiting from NYC and I needed a quick mani/pedi for a wedding downtown Chi (so this is my tourist 2 cents). This is a cute location, they had tasty warm white tea in the seating area. I didn't have an appointment but they were able to squeeze me in before the after work rush (the rush started around 5pm). They don't offer the powder gel that I'm used to, but the lady at the front desk made some comparable suggestions. I got a basic pedi and no chip mani. The prices are moderate for the area but I'm pleased with the end result. I gave 4/5 bc I'm used to a aroma therapy rose petals, a short shoulder massage at the dry station or a cocktail during the pedicure. Last week I attempted to make an appointment using the online booking option through Yelp. That didn't work out well, because I only received a response telling me to call the nail salon to make an appointment. So, the lesson there is to call the nail salon directly and you will have no problem. Try to make your appointments in advance because the slots do tend to fill up quickly. On Wednesday's they have a $35 special for a regular mani + pedi. I made an appointment for a 10am slot (which is when they first open) and arrived a little early. The entire nail salon was being thoroughly cleaned. This sent my little germaphobic heart to heaven. I didn't get the name of my nail tech, but she was amazing! I came in with my feet and hands looking like the Hunger Games, but she truly put in the work and turned them around 360. The pedicure water was the perfect temperature and she was thorough. They also have a nice selection of O.P.I and Essie to choose from (along with another brand which I can't recall at the moment). The manicure and the pedicure both included a hot stone massage as well. The environment was pristine, very relaxing, and they had the movie "Something Borrowed" playing in the background. I really wanted to like this salon. The ambience is great and the staff is very friendly. It was truly a relaxing experience all three times I've been there. However, their no-chip does not last long. All three times I've been there, my nails are chipped within a few days. This is especially frustrating since they are one of the more expensive nail salons. I kept coming back because I really wanted to give this place a chance. To be fair, they will gladly fix any broken nail for you. But in my case, another nail chipped a couple of days after I went back in for a retouch so what's the point. I came here based on the recommendation of a co-worker. I wasn't sure what to expect given it's random location, but I had a great experience. I went on a Friday afternoon and the place was packed, but they were nice enough to squeeze me in. I only had to wait 15 minutes (pro tip: make an appointment) before they were able to get me in a pedicure chair. The salon was very clean and they used freshly sterilized equipment, which is always a must from my perspective. The woman who did my nails was great. She took her time with my pedicure and even used hot stones, which was a welcome on a cold, dreary day. This was a difficult review to write. Probably one of the most difficult reviews I've ever written. My previous experience here was so bad, that I honestly felt traumatized by the location itself. Ever have a bad experience like that? A little more than a month ago, the owner, Nadiya, reached out to me on Yelp and offered to re-coup my experience via a "free" manicure. I LITERALLY waited a full month to make a decision about coming back. I'm a pretty brave fucking girl, but being degraded just leaves a very long-lasting sour taste in your mouth. Anyway... I make an appointment to come back. I ended up being late by a little more than 15 minutes for my appointment. I was meeting a gal pal of mine and we were both late. I hate being late and I felt pretty shitty about it too. I did call 10 minutes prior to my actual appointment notifying Pure Rain Nail Spa that I was running late. The owner said no problem. We got there and everything was nice and average. I should have prefaced this (an all my reviews) that I kind of have a potty mouth (when I write reviews mostly), but oh-the-fuck-well. Here's the run down: - Nadiya (owner) made a good faith effort to reach out to me. She clearly cares about her business and wants its to be successful, like any good business owner. - None of the terrible awful people I encountered were spotted while I was there. - The manicure was done well and it was obvious that the esthetician was making a constrained effort to be a little nicer to me. ****NOTE**** I don't return to business on the bequest of business owners to have my ass kissed. Personally, its rather irritating. I like this whole free-market-speech thing (however limited it may actually be). This is what I didn't like and REALLY rubbed me the wrong way, which is why I had such an issue writing this review: - The owner mentioned that she had only reached out to offer the free manicure because she thought I still lived in the area (I live about 40 mins away from the city now). I found it disconcerting. I haven't worked through why I found it bothersome, but maybe because the offer at that point didn't seem genuine. I'm not sure. The biggest problem with reviews is that they are largely based on emotion and perception. Not fact or technique, which are typically quite secondary. The biggest problem I had with my initial visit was how awful I was treated. The owner did much better, but I don't feel that it was necessarily genuine. I also felt as though while she saw the service as "free," I had actually already paid for a manicure I NEVER received a few years ago. And the truth is that for her it was a "free" service because she wasn't the owner at the time. Starting out at 5 stars, here's how I break down my rating: - 1 star for the paltry invitation not being exactly genuine. -1 star the entire interaction being somewhat awkward. If I had never encountered my original experience, I would frequent this business on occasion. At the time, I was in college, so of course this was a more convenient location. For all that is good and holy, this is the best nail salon I have ever been to. Clean, professional, reasonably priced, courteous and very skilled. Came here on a Friday based mostly on the reviews from Yelp. Absolutely was not dissapointed. Very easy to find (right on Dearborn and across the street from the Harold Washington Library). I didn't make an appointment (although if I wanted services on the weekend, I would definitely recommend, the spaces seemed to fill up quickly) and was greeted warmly. Just came in to check it out with a pedicure but noticed that they offer waxing services as well. I'm very happy with the pedicure result, so I will be back for the waxing services. I ended up getting the lavender pedicure ($5 off Yelp check in!) and it was just amazing. Right under 45 minutes but didn't feel like that - exceptional calf massage (I'm a runner, so I notice this kind of thing) polish was applied neatly and all products smelled divine. I had the most awful mani/pedi yesterday. 5/9/2012 Pedi was great - they switched girls for the mani and this is when things went south. I have been coming here for a while, and had some problems in the past... but never thought about not coming back, until yesterday when I left with 6 bloody cuticles! 6 bloody cuticles!!! I told the girl who was giving me the mani- she needs to be more gentle, her response was "I know I keep cutting you". Then she used the styptic liquid and my fingers burned for an hour and turned them bright red. It was not relaxing and really painful. How is a mani - painful?!? As she was finishing up her horrible job, the last client left with out giving her a tip - and she was complaining about that. I don't agree with no tip but her technique needs serious work - and she should not be discussing it in front of me. Very disappointing. I noticed a smudge while drying but just, let it go b/c I was in pain, annoyed, and simply just wanted to go home. "No, f*cker, I just like standing here," is what I should've said, but instead, I kept it friendly and kindly asked if it was possible if I could get a manicure. He proceeded to ask if I had an appointment and I replied, "no." He looks at the schedule book, walks off, says something to his coworkers and continues to work on his client. And then another girl, who's also not friendly tells me to take a seat and wait. Can I just get a damn answer?! About 30 minutes later, the guy tells me to take a seat and he begins to take off my gel, he doesn't even say a word to me. I sit there some more, soaking my nails in acetone for another 30 minutes. Another lady finally comes over and continues to work on my manicure. This time, she's somewhat friendlier and does an average job. In the end, I pay about $45 just for an average "no-chip" manicure. They play Sex and The City repeatedly, uncensored, so not exactly kid friendly. Super unfriendly staff. Too bad, all the workers here are pretty good looking. Pretty salon too. I've been coming here since I moved to Printers Row. This is a great nail shop that never seems to disappoint me. They've the 35 dollar mani-peds on Wednesdays, which is a great deal! It is BYOB ...major plus! I also like the fact that they also have Coke or Diet Coke to offer. Yes, they do play SATC a lot, but they're more than happy to change it if you ask. However, I do notice lately they've been playing more rom-com movies instead. As for the staff, they are very nice and accommodating. Other places I've been rush through the whole mani-ped and once you get the the drying station they peace out. Nope, not here. Nice place. Was able to do a Walk-in and got service right away. The lady who did my nails seemed heavy handed and was not the most gentle with filing and cutting cuticles. This is three days later and my....NEVER thought I'd say this, but my cuticles/cuticle area(s) are sore!!!! Hard to wear seat belts or grasp stuff because my skin is so supple and overly sensitive-didn't even know this was possible...nice place but wouldn't return unless I just needed a nail polish change without a full manicure. My pedi last for at least 3 weeks and my no chip mani last for 2 to 3 weeks (and my nails don't get damaged) The owner remembered me and my friend after the first visit. Well... The hardest part about writing a review for this this amazing salon is - where to start?! I moved back to Chicago for work after living in Los Angeles for a decade. Not long after I returned, I began the hunt for my new home-base nail salon. Sadly, I spent my entire first year going through groupon after groupon, trying to find a spot that felt "right" to me... I actually stopped getting my nails done for a few months because it seemed more of a labor than a luxury. Then one day I chanced upon a non-groupon related find... A tucked away little salon in the South Loop/Loop by the Harold Washington Library (main Chicago Public Library branch, with the gargoyles), also a few blocks from my home.... The immediate appearance seemed too good to be true... Plush couch-like chairs, byob, TVs playing Sex & The City, free wine with your service... Additional options including massages and waxing, facials etc. by a licensed aesthetician... all at extremely reasonable prices. My mani-pedi couldn't have turned out more perfect... I frequently have ingrown nails, and the girls there aren't shy to make sure the nail is cut to my liking. I have now gone to Pure Rain religiously for four (4) years - for weekend afternoon relaxation - or for one of their weekday specials. Mondays are no-chip mani and pedi for $60, Wednesdays are regular mani and pedi for $35. You also earn cash points after every purchase. I can't help but add a shoulder massage almost every time. Get one once and you will understand why. Just beware because it can open your pocketbook to an addiction (at least it's reasonably priced and available in moderate 10, 15 or 20 minute proportions lol). Lesser known, Pure Rain is also pet friendly. I have brought my cat on several occasions and also my dog (when she was a puppy) - either of them sat in my shoulder bag and loved all of the extra attention. I would still bring my dog if she was a calmer breed and capable of sitting through the appt. My cat on the other hand could watch tv on my lap all day. The entire Pure Rain staff is super friendly, helpful, and warm. Some of the women there even feel like friends or family to me, and I truly look forward to spending some of my day there every couple weeks - watching a girl-power comfort show or movie, having a glass of wine and relaxing. Pure Rain is my staple nail spot in Chicago - my favorite and my one and only. I even love it more than any I tried while living in Cali. Considering that I spent a decade in the LA areas of Westwood, Venice, WeHo, Hermosa Beach/Manhattan Beach, and Santa Monica - I feel like that says a Lot. ... So highly recommended! read more

No offer to help you get back into them when you're done. Not fun with semi-wet nails. The bottoms of my feet and my heels are not smooth like they should be after a pedicure, which makes me sad. Most disturbing was the never-ending SATC wagon train. It never, ever, ever ends. I almost ran out of there screaming for it to stop. Carrie Bradshaw on a loop is not relaxing! I signed up for a spa pedicure. This deluxe service lasted a total of 40 min. At my spa back home their regular pedicure is 45 min. For $65 I expect more than to have the polish on in 30 min. Also, be aware there are no individual seats let alone massage chairs. Only a 90 degree restaurant style booth hard as a rock. The bowls don't adjust so if you are tall or not a size 10 or below, you won't have a comfortable place to rest your leg. I was uncomfortable the whole time and eventually my butt fell asleep. No one even talked to me the entire time I was there except to tell me to pick a flavor and to go to the drying station. They kicked me out after 5 min at the drying station. read more

I got a dip manicure a couple weeks ago. Everyone was super nice, Sex & the City was playing on all of the TV's which was an added bonus. The whole appointment took a little under an hour; however, only two coats of dip were put on and in previous manicures elsewhere, there's been at least three or four. A couple days later, a little chip broke off. Then, I was at work and the right thumbnail just came completely off - no pain, came off in one piece. I was able to put it back on with some medical skin glue (haha) as a temporary fix. Last night, i noticed that another nail had come completely off again. I didn't even feel it pop off. I decided to take all of the nails off - I know it's kind of bad to do yourself, but it honestly took two minutes and it was painless. Popped in this nail spot after finding it on yelp. They had a special on Tuesday to get a Vinylux manicure for $15 so chose to them. My friend needed a pedi and I needed a mani. It was the perfect little spot because we were still able to speak to each other as the chairs are right across from each other. It took awhile for them to get started on mine but they made it up by giving me a free hand wrap and a pretty awesome massage. The color I chose was perfect and she did a great job with the manicure. I will admit that it was a little bit uncomfortable getting my pedicure, I am not a small girl at all, so I wish that part could of been better.
