This is your standard Chinese restaurant/banquet hall in Richmond Hill in the same complex as Shinta BBQ. Name change with renovations has made the interior much brighter and spacious. Came for dim sum and we had heard mixed reviews on the quality of the food but one of the elders still wanted to try it. We got a mixture of standard dim sum and the feedback was that the flavour was lacking. Nothing really stood out. One order was a steamed chive and mushroom dumpling and the filling was all chive with bits of mushroom and topped with a goji berry. There was absolutely no flavour to the filling. Service was just okay. For a Sunday it wasn't that busy and you would be able to get a table walking in.

Tried this relatively new dim sum restaurant that changed from the old Golden Court restaurant. They put up a new sign over the old one that says Purple Orchid. The price is amazing for their promo $5 for S, M , L. And The quality of the food is not lacking because of the price. Everything we had was top notch and tasted flavourful and delicious. We were very pleased with the food. The downside was they charge $2.50 per person for tea and they add 12% gratuity onto your bill which bumps up the bill considerably. But Most restaurants do that now. Not my favourite practice but they have to recoup some profit somehow. Long story short. Our experience was A-OK and we viewed other tables dishes and we wanted to come back and try because they too looked awesome. Recommend this place for now. And Will see experience of service and food on future visits.

Great dim sum in the heart of Richmond Hill. This restaurant replaced a long time favourite, Golden Court. It's brightly lit and nice decor. The restaurant is always busy but not so busy that you have to wait a long time to be seated. Been here several times and enjoyed it ever

A pretty solid dim sum spot for your dim sum classics. A no frills Chinese dim sum restaurant. They have your classics like beef tripe, chicken feet, har gow, siu mai and more. All the items were delicious and hits the spot for morning dim sum. The aesthetics inside are dated and old, but that doesn't take away from their food. Service is pretty standard. Overall a good spot, but not a fancy one.

Located in the Jubilee Square on the north west corner of Hwy 7 and West Beaver Creek. Purple Orchid opened up in the prior location of Golden Court Restaurant. There is a large parking lot with many accessible parking spots out front. The restaurant is large and plenty of room inside to move around and not feel confined by the arrangements. There is an early bird promotion for all small - large items being $5.00 if ordered before 11am and $6.00 afterwards. The food quality is A-OK and service is friendly and quick. Have not tried their dinners and will return to give them a try

Came here Christmas on holiday for dinner. I have to say I was very disappointed in both the food and the service. The restaurant was severely short staffed with only 3 wait staff. The food was warm instead of hot. One of the dishes, was left at an empty table for 15 mins before getting served. When we requested that it be reheated after they realized it was left unattended and brought it to us, the wait staff started blaming each other and they said that they would get yelled at if they brought it back to the kitchen. the conclusion was that we had to accept a cold dish. Our plates and teas were also barely tended to. We had dishes that had bones eg chicken and fish, and plates are not switched even with bones piled up. The laughable part is that when we were done with the meal and ready for the check then they decided to switch out the plates lol. The chicken dish was dry and barely had chicken taste. When served, it was shriveled. The grouper tofu hot pot casserole, be careful of the English description that it is grouper belly. It's not fillet but tons of large bones. The Chinese contains the word "head" which even the waiter was confused about. The lotus root squash pork dish was cold (this was the one that was left unattended) and the "holes" of the lotus root was not properly washed/scrubbed with black residue. The Chinese style steak was dry and when served looked lackluster. Not sure if this is usual quality or maybe the kitchen has different cook for Christmas. The place wasn't filled. Had about 8-10 tables of 6-12 people. The dessert was red bean soup, jello (I think it was mango) and almond cookies. And, one laughable/strange thing, in the middle of dinner, the owner started screaming loudly at a wait staff or it was some sort of angry burst about something related to someone's order.

My bill shows the 12% required service charge just 4 of us.

Service was terrible. Food was tasteless. And they mandatory add service just for 4 of us. And they add 2.4% if you use your credit. Absolutely don't go there. Ask for ice water and rice, it took them forever to bring them. The only time they are attentive to you was when they bring you the bill and want your tip

This new dim sum place is open on previous 黄金阁 location where we used to visit. They are having a promotional price for SML dim sum's the same price at $5.5 for weekdays, $6 for weekends. Inside is spacious with a lot of seatings, and the decor has not been changed. The food is fast and average quality, but the service here is not very attentive, I think that because shortage of staff, and the servers seemed unhappy , needs a lot of improvements in this area.

However, the major downside here is the notoriously slow and chaotic service. Due to the massive crowds, servers can be hard to flag down, orders take a long time to arrive, and the staff often feels rushed or inattentive. After several seafood meals we opted to avoid seafood the first night. We had the Peking duck combo (Peking duck with thin tortillas, cantaloupe, spring onion and cucumber as well as duck in lettuce wraps). The duck tortilla was a highlight and a crowd favorite, including with my picky kids. The minced duck seemed a bit overcooked/fried, althoug it didn't stop me from eating several lettuce wraps! We didn't know until too late there was a separate option to order duck soup. We ordered a steamed sea bass which I found l a bit fishy tasting, although my parents thought it was perfectly fine. We also had some crispy noodles with super tender chicken, and tender pea shoots in broth. It was a great meal. The second night our host ordered the crab claws, and conch in a shell for everyone. Both were unique starters. We also had maggi lobster, noodles, and a special order of bbq pork buns and har gao for the kids. The whole meal was excellent, and the conch especially was unique. We replaced the roast pigeon with sweet and sour pork, which we ostensibly did for the kids but the grown ups were pleased too. The restaurant had a good selection of cocktails. Only criticism would be the complimentary desserts. They had red bean/green bean soup, which we declined, some cookies, and a gelatin dessert that tasted exactly like car freshener to me. But it was only a small blip to the meal!

Now I can go to heaven, in peace. Place is small, and waiting for a table is de rigor. We placed our name in the Google waitlist, then waited another hour to be seated on Friday night. Based on reviews, got the Singapore chili crabs with the king oyster mushrooms (under the crab it soaked up all the goodness), spicy clams garlic veggies and the beef in black pepper/garlic. All were well done, the veggies had great wokhai, met with appreciation at the table. Clams and crabs were spicy for some and ok for others (our table was Cantonese and Korean). Crab was delicious, and the sauce called for rice to be mixed in after the crab was done. It filled us, but not too much. Next time we might try other sauces, but the Singapore chili sauce was killer. Totally worth the money and the hassle. In a mall full of other restaurants this place was the busiest. Very cute decor and free ice cream!

Overall the food was good. The sauces were all really good and enhanced the flavour of the shellfish. In my opinion, the salted egg yolk was a bit too creamy and felt better suited for something like a pasta. The curry was alright, but my favourite was the Singaporean chilli crab. It was a whole infusion of flavour and had a little kick to it as well! My only complaint is it is a bit on the pricey side (was about $70 per person), but that's expected with lobster and crab.

One side is for takeout but patrons are sitting there to dine in and the other side is for dine in, but the employees also do take out. Confusing YES. So I arrived in blindly following a line. I eventually tapped the person behind me, is this the line to get a table. He says no it's the line to order... okay. About 20min in the line I finally get the deal what everyone is doing, they order their seafood order at the front where the precious alive seafood is stored- it's like a pick what you eat counter. So I order their sangarita with a salad and yellow rice and a calamari with no sides (you save like $4 for just skipping that). After ordering she asked if I had a table?? I said no, then she comes out with seven yellow sticky notes and says there are 6 parties waiting for a table. I asked how long? Maybe 40min. She also advises me that i can put myself on the list for a table and she can hold my order up to 45min- they won't start cooking until you have a table. So I asked how long for takeout, she says 20min. Well I did my math, I waited 20min in line, and 20min for food that is not partially cooked so 40min, I can live with that. Watched the server rip the slip, and just fyi the fish was charged at $35/kg costing $60 and the calamari at 1lb was $22. She asked me to wait on the side, saw her put the slip with the raw fish and placed it ON THE FLOOR behind the counter. As I waited on the side I can see quite a number of orders piled in Rubbermaid containers on the floor. Behind the counter I can see the coats of the employees piled up next to what looks like to be the washed cutlery for table service and the employees use the same yellow rag to wipe every cutlery. I also saw employees clear the tables and return to prepare more cutlery- did they wash their hand in the kitchen??? I was then prompt to pay on their pay unit. It prompted me tip. SKIP tip for takeout. Then she tells me it's 2% charge if I pay credit card no charge for debit. So I pay debit. I waited patiently, I stood near the washroom and overheard how a male customer found a $100 bill in the washroom and handed it to the restaurant- they didn't even ask around if anyone dropped it. Then when I had waited 30min (10min past the estimated time, I asked for an update ). They assured me 10 more minutes. Then after 10min I asked again, they said 1min. And then they came out with my take out. The gave me a complimentary hummus for the slow service, but I don't think it made up for the undersized sides they served me. Just look at my pic and look at the website photo. Overall , if you have 2-3hours this is your place. THIS PLACE WAS ABSOLUTELY CHAOS! I'm questioning food stored on the floor even though it's in a Rubbermaid and then that bin placed back on the scale, touched by the gloved hands and potentially cross contaminating food. During the whole time I didn't see anyone clean or mop the floor- what if people are trekking sidewalk salt in the winter. I am really concerned. Eat dangerously here if you want. I do say the food was seasoned well but won't be returning.

As I said earlier, they are pretty traditional. If you've been to some more local restaurants in HK, you'd understand. Yes there will be some old Chinese ladies yelling at each other. Yes, their attitude can be bad at times when they are super busy. But for $8.85 and a drink? I think I can live without the "good" service and pay $15-$20/dish. All in all I'd give them 4.5/5.
