Probably the worst place ever. 1st we wanted a sit down meal. We came in and stood around for a few minutes waiting to be told where to go. No one even glanced at us. My mother finally asked where to go. We were told to go back there (with a general wave of the hand). And sit down. So we went and sat down and waited, and waited, and Waited! 15 minutes later mom (86 years old, I'm 60) got up and chased down a waitress to get menus. The young lady came over, gave us menu's and took our drink orders. 10 minutes later she came back with our drinks. She took our lunch order and left. 45 minutes, no exaggeration, I was timing her, I got up and went looking for lunch. I found the waitress and asked about our food. She looked into the kitchen and said that our food had just come out. I sat down and it took 5 more minutes for her to bring us our COLD food. By this point I'm starving, so I ate it anyway. I had a French Dip with provolone. Brought it without the cheese. Took it back, threw a piece of cheese on it, slapped it down and left. The bun was the consistency of white bread, the meat was cold. Moms sandwich was soggy and tasteless. Like I said, we ate because we were both hungry by then. Another 20 minutes, the waitress never checked on us. Didn't ask if we needed anything. I had to get up and chase her down for the bill. $30 for 2 sandwiches with a bag of chips each and a drink. Horrible service. Lackluster food. Too much money for the food. Skip it. We had friends visiting from out of town and I had wanted to try this place after hearing about it. Stopped by on our way out from Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse. The pie I had was delicious! Raspberry Rhubarb Jalapeño with a side of ice cream. Crust was nice and flaky and served warm it was worth the stop. It was warmer inside than outside so we opted to sit on the patio. It was busy when we were there and a little bit of a wait in line but quickly received our order. Parking is kinda difficult with it being a busy road. Cute little place and worth the stop. Wow!!!! I'm a pie baker myself, and we stopped here for lunch. Holy. Wow. I ordered the prime rib dip "keto style" (no bun), kids got kids meals, hubs got the homemade Mac and cheese. Service was amazing, and I was particularly impressed by the international flavor of the staff (hooray j-visa student exchange program!). They were so sweet and pro; loved our server (Ukraine?) and our sweet and funny ice cream scooper (Scandinavia.... Denmark?). Then.. came the pie... I'd ordered mine for 1 bite: raspberry rhubarb jalapeño. Because I'm a fit gal, I eat low carb but what's one bite - right? WOW!!! I couldn't share. I was amazed! The crust was perfection (and if you know pie baking, you know that's the tough part)! And - wow, I told my kids it was "spicy" (so they'd not covet my slice) and didn't share. We stopped here in 2020 during COVID and it was a great experience. We stopped again here yesterday 7/5 and again was amazed with the great food, pies and ice cream. Big fan of pie. Will even travel a bit outside my path on vacation if I've heard about good ones. So we veered a couple of miles off track one day on our Black Hills vacation to have pie here. It was a big disappointment. With heavy heart, given I am disinclined to diss small businesses, I'd say to Yeeps and other Peeps who are tempted to go in here, don't bother. The rhubarb pie I selected seemed made with fresh rhubarb, which is the only good thing I can reference. I understand rhubarb (a favorite of mine) grows in abundance in South Dakota. (They even make some darned good wine our out rhubarb in this state but that's another review.) So the expectation for fresh veggie (rhubarb is a vegetable not a fruit) used in the pie was met. Beyond that, it has to be the worst rhubarb pie I have ever had. Maybe the worst pie I have ever had period. Doughy crust that was a soggy mess below and heavy and doughy above the filling. Filling that was a gluey-pasty mess of over floured rhubarb . My understanding is the Purple Pie Place changed ownership a couple of years ago. I'd chalk my disappointing experience up to that, but for good Yelp reviews from some others since then. But also note Yelp reviews from others reflecting experiences as poor as mine in the same early June timeframe. Maybe consistency of product is the problem here. Hard to say. Nothing about the semi surly manager (who I assume was the owner) behind the counter was helpful. Although the young women taking the orders were friendly. As side note given I see others have been critical of this place dishing up mass market Blue Bunny brand ice cream, worth saying that they have now changed to mass market Cascade Glacier brand ice cream. Or at least that is what the manager told us was in the case when we were there two weeks ago. We passed. Ambience was kitchy and a bit dreary at the same time. But with lots of seating in a back room and some in the main room and a bit on an outdoor side patio. Accessibility is poor here. Although the Yelp page says "wheelchair access - yes", it is not. There is no accessible parking. The large loose gravel in the lot isn't a surface on which wheelchairs will rolll. There is about a 6" step up ontow a wooden walkway into the door. Wheelchairs don't climb steps. Bottom line is once was more than twice enough here. I don't write many one star reviews, but this one was earned. Get here early if you want a cream pie. They sell out early. If you like berry and rhubarb pies you'll be in luck. The bumbleberry was a mixed berry pie and the crust was delicious (makes all the difference!). Just enough sweet. I heard the food is good too but we didn't eat a meal here. The service wasn't readily available or we might have stuck around for a bite. The servers at the pie station looked like they just bookface all day and roll their eyes at tourists who are here for the first time. The place is adorable. Come here and eat outside in the sunny patio if you can. Super cute! But not super friendly. And they ran out of pie. Ex-presidents carved into mountainsides are now South Dakota's second biggest attraction. This is, hands down, the best pie I have ever eaten. I'm not even a dessert person. The rhubarb pie is so orgasmically delicious that I am amending my tour schedule this Autumn, just so I can visit the Purple Pie Place again. Get the rhubarb pie. It's a dream. I should have said, I wasn't a dessert person. But I am now. I come from England, the land of great pies, so do not take this lightly. Go to PPP. As fast as you possibly can. The decor is also adorable, with the lovely little purple pig out front. 5/5. Hands down. One year later, I returned. The Pie is still dreamy, but this time I had to wait 40 minutes - I jest not - 40 minutes - for my 2 slices of to go pie. The line was not too long, I was maybe 10th in line. It took an average of 4 minutes per customer. I've never seen such slow service! But well worth it, even if the slices are slightly overpriced. :) Yay! There is also another very, very good Rhubarb Pie place in Rapid City itself. Unbelievable in fact, that it is comparable to the Purple Pie Place! It must just be this part of the world? Oink, oink. I remember both visits well. The first visit was back in the day... when almost nobody would come to my concerts. Shortly after my pie, I played in Rapid City to an audience of about 10 and it was mediocre at best. The Purple Pig I'd sampled earlier in the day (while trying to make out Mount Rushmore which I couldn't see because of clouds and mist), was the highlight of my time in South Dakota. It was not long after I made out with an absolutely gorgeous girl from my shows, because back then I used to do that fairly often when opportunity presented itself, whereas these days I generally do not. She met me in the morning (after I'd spent the night sleeping in the car, after the show), and took me up on a ridge somewhere with a beautiful view of Rapid City. Then we made out. That was also the day I took the picture that is on the back cover of my 3rd CD "The Road". That was taken in South Dakota, close to the borders with Wyoming and Montana, on my long, flat drive to Bismarck. The second visit, was just a few minutes after I had left someone behind that had been following me around the country for awhile. Uninvited, pushy, helpful, intelligent, good to have company, bad to feel obligated, a very hard situation for me to be in. It was a mixture of pain and relief as she was heartbroken and I was guilty and sad but free. She got over it very fast in ways I could not have imagined. The show in Rapid City had been much, much better this time. Infinitely better, you might say. A packed place, a much better reception. Same venue. Yet one more year later I returned again, but they were closed. Was it for the season, or closed just at that time of day? I can't remember but I was quite disappointed. Oink. Oink. We just had a very disappointing meal. My wife and I both ordered the chicken pot pie. While my serving had three pieces of chicken, my wife's only had one. There was a crust type on the top and bottom, but it was not an enclosed pot pie. Pretty pricey for a small portion at $13.95. We did order a piece of pie at $5.99 and by the time we were out the door, it was over $50. While the initial service was very fast, it took a long time to get our check and leave. A cute little tourist spot that is a must see, or is it? Even though I wasn't going to dine in due to my companion Bella (canine). I decided to see what it had to offer. I ended up getting a $7.50 banana split that was served on small pie plate which it dripped all over by the time I walked to the car outside the door. Recommendation to the owner is to get something a bit more useful to handle the bananas length. Other than that it was nothing outrageous. This place is overrated. First of all, the establishment is very rude with no smiles on faces. We tried it for dinner. It's too complicated to order at the ice cream stand because you want to eat outside vs. inside. The inside was hot so we chose to eat outside and could get waited on unless we ate inside. The food was below average when you think about the price we paid for the food. We spent over $75 on food and additional $35 on ice cream! The pies were supposedly fresh but then the help said it was a frozen pie. I asked to use WiFi as we couldn't get cell set one and the lady said it was not for public use and told me to go to the Pizza Hut down the road. I explained that we couldn't get GPS to work and asked her for an exception and she just chuckled. For $110 for crappy food and frozen pie, I think a one time exception for a traveler could have been made. I'm telling you all to pass this place up! Eh, this place was okay, nothing to come back to. We were staying down the street and decided to try it as it seemed like a cute place! We got the bbq pork sandwiches, Mac and cheese and chocolate pie. The sandwiches were like warm, the coleslaw was bland and it seemed to have more coleslaw than meat. I was confused because the max and cheese says homemade and boasts about being cheesy but honestly I'm not sure there was even any cheese in it. The chocolate pie was probably the best thing there. Food is not great. Chicken pot pie is extremely salty, chicken in the Caesar salad is chewy, portion size for the Mac n Cheese is ridiculous for the price, and the pork sandwich was decent. My son wouldn't eat the pot pie so I requested to exchange for a pork sandwich and we were told no because "there wasn't anything wrong with it". I've never experienced that kind of answer before and have worked in the restaurant business for over a decade. Our visit today had abrupt service and my husbands pie slice was twice as big as mine. The last time we ordered a whole pie to go, it was too hot to transfer and the bottom fell out before we got home. They acknowledged the issue but did nothing to fix it. It kind of looked promising with a good looking crust. the filling had some problems as it was filled with rhubarb and few berries. if I wanted rhubarb, I would have bought rhubarb. If I could give zero stars I would. Waited in a very long line. Finally ordered two turkey sandwiches and 3 pieces of pie. After we paid, we were told they do not have turkey today. Annoying because we have food allergies in our family and there wasn't anything else we could really eat for dinner other than hot dogs. This is a delightful little place just down the road in Custer, SD. I loved the purple and pink theme. They are known for their pie but we went for ice cream because we were more in the mood for it. Very yummy. Not sure if they make that in the store or not but, it was more of a "we have to visit" than a "we have to try their product" type of thing. We almost didn't go, but decided to last minute + on a whim per our motel hostess's recommendation. There are several ice creams, pie kinds, drinks, sundaes, & other items to choose from. Friendly small town staff and cute inside. I got an adorable tank top as a souvenir as well. It's pink with glittery font. I'm so glad we went. And yes it was our second ice cream stop of the day. We were both very happy with our meals. The pot pie was served fresh and hot with a flaky pie crust top, and a thick, and flavorful filling with lots of veggies, especially peas. I had a bite of hubby's sandwich and it had big chunks of chicken, with crisp celery, and a nice tang of cranberry. We finish our meal with pie. I had the bumbleberry ala mode. A perfect balance of sweetness and tart, with the flaky crust and creamy vanilla ice cream on top. Perfection. Hubby had the peanut butter pie which was smooth and creamy with a good peanut butter flavor. Prices were reasonable, and the service was good.
