Best pies ever. I didn't even like pie before I came here, and not for a lack of trying (obligatory bites at family holidays, at restaurants when friends and dates would give me a bad time about hating pie, people who cal aimed their pie or their family's pie was the best pie, yada yada yada). I still never tasted the pie to change my heart until my family forced me to come here with them. Had lunch there and the quality of the food was very good. Had the chicken salad sandwich. It was very fresh and the bun was good as well. The wait staff was very polite and service was prompt. We came here after visiting a nearby burger place and we were ready for dessert. The building is absolutely adorable. It is entirely purple. The name is very fitting. It was small but they did have a back patio. They had a lot of ice cream and pie. We ordered a cherry pie and a strawberry rhubarb pie. The strawberry rhubarb filling was the perfect mix of sweet and tangy. The crust though was totally covered in sugar and had no flavor except for the sugar. The cherry was just sugar sugar sugar. My fiance and I were looking for something sweet before we left Custer and I ran across the ppp via yelp, it had some great reviews so we just had to stop. Let me start by saying the cherry pie we had was by far very very good interesting flavor and crust. The ice cream is supermarket quality and not worth the price. We stopped for lunch on a recent trip to the Black Hills. The place was certainly hard to miss! I would recommend the pie. The lunch was hit-or-miss: I had a panini which was pretty good. My daughter wasn't wild about her Mac-n-cheese. The salad bar was a rip off. Our waitress had an attitude, but there was another gal there that tried to cover for her. A little overpriced. Bottom line is the food taste good but portions small or sizes vary for the price and service is ok. Chicken pot pie had a really good taste and the mac and cheese wasn't bad. Both items though were pretty small portions though. Waitress service ok but nothing special. Young staff that routinely would be sitting in the next seating area checking their phone. Returned later to get some pie. Watched on girl dish out generous portions of ice cream when ordered with the pie but the cashier dished our my wife's pie and ice cream when we ordered it. It was much smaller than everyone else's portion. When I commented on it to her she said the last guy ordered extra ice cream on his pie that's why it was so much more. I stood right there in line and watched 5 people get pie and ice cream before us and no one said anything about extra ice cream, all the servings were much bigger than the tiny scoop my wife got, and they all paid the same price. read more

We visited the Purple Pie Place twice while staying at nearby Custer State Park. The first time we ordered ice cream and pie at the counter, which we highly recommend, and which draws most of their customers. The second time we had table service for lunch. Sandwiches were small, do not come with so much as a pickle unless you pay for chips or a side, and were fine but not great. Sandwich rolls are meh. Pulled pork sandwich tastier than others but still small and needs side since single taste becomes monotonous by the end. My husband very much enjoyed the chicken pot pie, but again, a small portion. Service is fine but not exceptional. The Purple theme and eclectic decor are fun. read more

Very disappointed. We had pie here last summer and it was fabulous. No such luck this time! Tonight, we had apple pie a la mode. The crust was soft, almost like it had been sitting out too long uncovered. It was flaky, but no flavor. The apple filling was bland, not much of a cinnamon or sweet taste. In fact, it was so bland, that I actually added some sugar from a packet at the table! It helped a little, but not nearly enough. Very disappointing, since this place has such a great reputation for pie. As a side note, the ice cream is Blue Bunny - nothing to get excited about. Same as the grocery store. read more

DON'T FALL FOR THE CUTE NAME AND PURPLE EXTERIOR...I would never go here again unless it was for a straight up ice cream cone. My hubby and I were staying in Custer and wanted to get away from our teenage boys for an hour so we decided to get dessert. The parking lot was crowded(good sign) but inside was not as busy as I expected. I got the apple pie a la mode(they were out of my first two choices and since I never had rhubarb pie I didn't want to waste my dessert-I explained that I had never tried it as it is a rare pie for Florida and a great dessert place would have said "here try a sliver" or even a tiny scrap that fell out as one serves a pie. But customer service was not their strong suit(neither was their pie). I think that the adorable purple exterior in a tourist town that has few choices is their only hook. So back to the pie, the crust was overworked and tough and the apple filling was bland but my husband ordered a malt $5.89-fairly expensive in my opinion. and he asked for chocolate. They had chocolate ice cream right in front of them but they chose to use vanilla and pump the fake chocolate crappola on top and mix it. It was served but was the consistency of chocolate milk(very runny). My hubby took one sip and was disappointed and just wanted to get his money back and watch me eat my tough pie. They refused! They said the owner does not allow them to give a refund and they tried to call him but he didn't answer the phone. Note to owner: IF YOU ARE NOT AVAILABLE 24-7 THEN GIVE YOUR MANAGER SOME DECISION-MAKING POWER. THEY LOOKED LIKE A BUNCH OF HELPLESS TEENS!! The "manager" said the best she could do was to remake it....with chocolate ice cream. When she brought it back she just sat it down and my husband said "Thank you very much" and the girl just walked away without a word.--Not a good impression. read more

Excellent experience, fun atmosphere and great pies and ice cream. I had their chicken pot pie today and it was great, flakey crust, chock full of big chicken chunks and veggies. I also tried their strawberry rhubarb pie and ice cream to finish my meal off. I usually get bumble berry pie but they were sold out (their most popular) and glad I tried the strawberry rhubarb, maybe my new favorite:-) The wait staff was friendly and fast with my orders, even with a lot of customers. We didn't think much of this place. Got chicken pot pie and a grilled ham and cheese plus pie and ice cream. I don't believe for a minute that our meals or pies were made from scratch as advertised. Maybe I am spoiled by my wife's home-made pies, but I was very disappointed with the pie here. Tried my favorite, strawberry rhubarb, but it was so bad I couldn't eat it. When the owner stopped by to ask if we were enjoying the pie (nice), I gave him an honest review. The fruit was overcooked and bland. The predominant taste was that grassy quality of certain rhubarb. The crust was abundant and tasteless. He offered a different pie (nice), and to be safe I chose apple. But for the lack of grassy rhubarb flavor, it could have been the same pie. Overcooked and bland fruit, abundant tasteless crust. I remain baffled by the positive reviews for the pie here. The ice cream was good, so I can recommend this establishment if that's what you're looking for. read more

We had a $6 senior lunch which included a small (just right) sandwich or a bowl of soup and a great piece of home made pie. Food very good. Hours 10 AM to 9 PM, same menu all day. We were halfway through placing our order and the girl helping us goes outside and starts busing tables! Both the blueberry and peach pies filling had the consistency of Elmer's glue! My wife's pie had a golfball size, hard as a rock chunk of unmixed, ineatable, pie crust. When we asked if she could have a very small piece to replace it the looked at us funny and said "no...I didn't make it." Hopefully a one time incident but be forewarned. read more
