Stumbled upon this restaurant as I was making a I-turn. Full parking lot on a Saturday at 5:30 was a hint it might be good. It was! The Chizlic appetizer and beer started is off. The house beer is flavourless but many people must like it. The app was deli. We followed up with house salads. I suggest getting a double drink- the single whiskey seven was weak. Next time I will try the apple crisp: no room this time. Friendly, fast, attentive service. We called, asking if we should make a 6 PM reservation for 4 on a Thursday. They said no, on a weeknight at there would be no wait. Upon arrival we were told it would be 20-30 minutes. A bit later they asked if we were okay with a talk table, that didn't work for one of our group, so that increased our wait time. Our server was pleasant and helpful. We decided to try chislic, which is apparently a common appetizer in SD. The chunks of meat were overly " well done " and flavorless. We don't know if that is normal for chislic. We had read that chislic is traditionally mutton or lamb, perhaps venison, and occasionally beef. Seemed to us this restaurant's version was beef ( we could be wrong) . If a restaurant is serving the state's famous appetizer, perhaps it should be the more traditional mutton or lamb? The potato chunks with it were good. I had the green chile burger. It was good. Green chile was about a tbsp blob on the top of the meat pattie. When I make green chili burgers, I mix green chile into the meat. So that was off to me. The server asked if I wanted fries, i assumed, since she was asking, that they were not included, and would cost more, so I said no. Later in looking at the menu I saw they were included. 8/21/2026. Custer SD resident; been to the restaurant a couple times and the food was only fair at best. Tonight it took over an hour to get our food after ordering; the Prime Rib was well done and inedible, the salmon dinner was cold, and the prime dip sandwich appeared to have been sitting under the heat lamps for a long time; only the chicken wings were any good. Avoid this restaurant and drive to Custer; there are several good restaurants there. read more

This is a really fun restaurant with live music and friendly staff. We happened to go for dinner on a very busy night and had to wait about 40min for a table. Luckily we were able to grab a drink and watch the band while we waited. For dinner we shared the green chile queso app which was tasty but not really a queso- more like a pile of cheesy pork that you spoon into tortillas. Next we shared the prime rib dinner which was very good. Overall a nice spot for dinner in Hill City. read more

The service was fast and friendly! We were greeted by the hostess in a timely manor and our server was pleasant. My husband got the Bison Burger and I got the Chute Rooster Burger with pepper jack cheese. We both requested medium doneness. The burgers were cooked perfectly! So yummy! I also had a gin martini and my husband had the Dunkle beer. Delicious! My only negative comment was there were two dogs in the bar area where we ate. I do enjoy dogs, but do not appreciate having to eat with them in close proximity. Love the western decor! I do recommend this restaurant, just keep the dogs outside. We debated whether to give this a 3 or 4 star. Food was good but not great. The menu wasn't up to date, so we were bummed to not be able to try the grilled cheese. Waitress and staff were friendly, and the live music was cool. It was just pretty expensive for what it was, which is why we went with a 3*. While in the Black Hills everyday was pretty jam packed. Most restaurants in the area would close pretty early. Chute Rooster had a good food selection and had convenient hours. Service was a tad slow. We were seated quickly but waited a bit for our food. Someone called this place classy. It is NOT classy. It is more western or rustic like the steakhouse chains, minus the awful peanuts. The food is good. We split the Green Chile Philly steak sandwich with homemade potato chips and a side order of fries because other Yelpers said they were good. Now, if you are from the southwest, do not judge northern food by our standards. The sandwich while tasty did not have a green chile bite (piquant) to it. The fries were indeed fresh and flavorful. My husband hogged the chips which were good, but not my thing. They have Coca Cola! A lot of places serve Pepsi which I don't like. A cute farmhouse restaurant located a walk away from our hotel. Granted, we did not walk though haha. BUT if you want to work up your appetite before your meal, go for it. I ordered the bison burger on a gluten free bun, no cheese, and sweet potato waffle fries. The fries were scrumptious ! My burger was good but kind of dry since it didn't have any lettuce or tomato on it, I guess you have to specify if you want it on there which I didn't since I thought it came loaded. Good atmosphere, tables were spread out for distancing. Apps were turds and wings. Turds were pretty good, wings were average, nothing spectacular. Turds were $10 for 3, very high priced. I forgot to take pictures of the baked potato and brisket grilled cheese. They were ok, nothing exciting. Fries were good. Husband got the side salad with curry dressing. He was told it was life changing. It wasn't, but it was good. The sandwich had almost no cheese, which is pretty bad considering it was billed as a grilled cheese. The potato was better. Stopped here for a late lunch after checking into our place just next door. Walking into a new state and first restaurant ever, my first impression was quickly shut down by the Hostess. Boy was I wrong and thank you to our waitress for giving me a sample to try. I had a lick and it really burns. Best way to describe the pain is, I think the blazon wings from Bdubbs would've been more forgiving. We ordered the Mushroom Swiss burger, Chili Cheese Fries and some Buffalo Wings. All dishes were delicious! The chili cheese fries was our favorite! Wait time was a little slow, considering we were one of the two tables dining at the time. I supposed it was worth the wait. Only thing that was really bothersome is the amount of flies. It was hard to enjoy our food without worrying about the flies landing on our dishes. Atmosphere was pretty quiet where we sat in the back. When you enter, it looks like the bar area is to the right and dining tables to the left. Plenty of roomy tables for large groups. I didn't really check out the bar area but it was packing up quick by 5pm. Parking lot is large, so no worries about the parking situation. I believe there is a tattoo shop right next door as well. My fiancé and I are in town on vacation and decide to get food here. I gave Chute Rooster 4 stars because of the following reasons: 1. Customer Service- we called and placed our order to go. The girl who took our order sounded like she was new because after we had placed our order we got a call back asking follow up questions about our order. During our whole interaction from phone call to picking up was friendly and fast. 2. Food- I got the Salmon and it was really delicious. It was cooked perfectly, not dry at all. I enjoyed every last bite. My fiancé got the Southwestern Chicken Salad which he said it was okay. The home fries were just fries but I enjoyed them. I hope you find this review helpful! And no, I seriously doubt they taste like chicken. Peanut butter ale a peanutty surprise. It's the old west so the burgers are branded and delicious. The fries are crunchy good. German chocolate cake ist zehr gut. Quick edit: my first 5 star Yelp. The owner, Ryan, came out to chat; told him it was all great but we could not do the oysters. Disappointing from the beginning. We called to see if they take reservations. They don't- but the man on phone said to get there about 5:30. We were there at 5:20 and seated by 5:40 and they were out of their specialty dish smoked prime rib. A restaurant should not run out of their specialty dish by 5:45. Since that was the reason we picked this restaurant we were severely disappointed. We considered leaving but it was Friday night. So instead of 2 prime rib dinners and a bottle of wine we ordered cheese curds and split a bbq pork sandwich. Disappointing. The curds were less than average and the chips served with the sandwich tasted like they were fried in old grease that wasn't hot enough. The pork sandwich was average with more sauce than meat. Our waitress indicated they were having supplier issues. (No excuse- it's South Dakota. They "grow" meat here). We won't be back this trip. There's other restaurants to try. We are unsure if we will be back to this restaurant next year. read more
