Man I can't speak highly enough about these guys. I have a 2004 Volvo with 200,000+ miles and I wanted to have it evaluated before driving across country to Oregon. I was on the fence about taking the car because it's so old and I knew it needed a new rack and pinion - Midas quoted me 1600 for the fix so I took it to Joe at Putnam for a second opinion. Not only did he quote me far less than Midas (he said he needed to do research but around 1000-1200) but after about 30 mins of chatting about the car he stopped the conversation and said "I'm gonna solve your problem for you: if you were my son I would say drive it out west, get to where you're going and sell the car, take the money you were gonna use for these repairs and get yourself something much more reliable. It's a solid car and will make the trip!" That's what I needed to hear! I was ready to pay the money for the fix but Joe seems like a solid dude who cares about people's best interests and he saved me almost 2000 bucks!! Very few mechanics would turn down a dollar. I'm very satisfied with my experience at Putnam Auto Repair. I had an engine issue on my Audi A4 where the car occasionally died right after starting. It could have been many issues, including some expensive problems. Joe, the owner, and his two mechanics were great. Joe was very honest that engine's electric problems were not his shop's specialty but he thought that my issue might be related to the fuel filter and the engine fuel intake. He suggested to replace the filter and clean the intake at a very reasonable, $170, price. All on the spot when I waited in a coffee shop. Great owner and very good mechanics. Very trustworthy shop. Words can't express how happy I was with the see epic I got from here. Joe, the mechanic, went above and beyond the normal expectations of a repair shop and got me out of a serious jam. He helped me troubleshoot my check engine light issue successfully and inexpensively and even stored it for a few days while the parts came in so I wouldn't get more tickets for an overdue inspection. Amazing service. Honestly, Joe runs one of the most transparent shops I've ever seen. I brought my car in for brake issues and he put my car up on the lift for free just to take a look. When he knew what was wrong he invited me into the back of the shop to show me the issues and point out exactly what I'd need. I must say I have been using this shop for a few of my cars and Joe the owner is always courteous , very upfront and honest about what does and doesn't need to be done . I went in yesterday to get an axle and some suspension parts replaced so that I can pass inspection . The original shop quoted me a much higher price than joe . It was very hot and he didn't want to overwork his mechanic so he was upfront in telling me the car would not be available same day for pick up and I was fine with that . I got a call this morning to pick it up and it's running very smoothly and his price was a lot less than what the inspection shop mechanic quoted me . That's why I am a repeat customer . Let me start by saying I've never physically been to this shop. I called them not too long ago to get advice on my car issue. Instead of having me bring the car in and do a bunch of unnecessary testing he gave me his honest advice over the phone. Joe has a new customer for LIFE! 100% hands down the best experience I have ever had with a mechanic. I brought my 2000 Ford Taurus in on a Thursday morning around 7:30 a.m. I had been told by several mechanics, including Pep Boys that I needed a new power steering pump. Turns out they were wrong. My steering pump is brand new! I had bought the car used and was never able to ask the former owner anything about repairs so it's been a mystery if something goes wrong. Turns out in this instance, I needed a new hose, not a new pump! Joe got my car in perfect working order and I was back on the road in only a few hours having paid WAY less than what other people would charge. They are friendly, straight shooters, knowledgeable and Joe REALLY loves what he does for a living, you can tell, he is just passionate about doing a good job because it's what he loves to do. He saved me a ton of money! I had a check engine light on, so he looked at my car. He then looked up the problem online and called one of his friends about it. There really wasn't a problem, just essentially a light glitch, so he told me that I was fine and I went about my way. Miles later, I still have no problems. I took my car to Joe after my former mechanic let his brother take over. Every time since, his brother would give me some dire warning about what massive repair/replacement needed to be done. This time because of an dubious noise it was making he wanted to replace all the shocks for $1000, so I brought the car to Joe on a friends recommendation. He checked it, out explained the problem and was able to fix it for under $300. He also happily explained to me the condition of my shocks in an easy way without warning that it needed fixing immediately. I found Joe's shop through Yelp and cannot recommend him highly enough. I know nothing about cars so I'm always nervous to go to a new mechanic but since I've found Joe my search is over! He very kindly and simplistically explained to me what kinds of repairs my car needed, even taking me under the raised car so I could see where the brake pads had been worn down completely, but he never made me feel stupid for not knowing the first thing about cars. He also offered me a few different repair options based on what my budget was. I was in and out in one day -- so easy! He even recommend a tire place nearby to replace a worn out tire. My car was overheating and had no heat, took it here and within two hours car was running like brand new and blowing Air so hot it feels like summer. Fast, fair and friendly service. My car was running rough this morning so I took it in. The owner diagnosed the problem (a faulty ignition coil on one of the cylinders) and had it fixed in just 45 minutes, all for a very reasonable price. I recently moved to the area and was nervous about having to find a new mechanic. I know next to nothing about cars and didn't want to get taken advantage of. After reading some positive reviews on here I decided to check them out and I have to say they definitely lived up to the hype. Joe the owner is SUPER friendly and nice. He's really honest. The first time I went there he encouraged me to try a cheap fix myself rather than pay for a more expensive diagnostic test. He easily could have just gone ahead and charged me but he really is a good person. I went back for the second time today with a more serious issue. He fixed it up quickly for a really reasonable price. The best thing about Joe is that he takes the time to explain everything to you. He pulled me into the shop and showed me all things he replaced and explained how things went wrong. I always feel a bit more car-savvy leaving there. I'm not a huge Yelper, but Joe and his guys deserve a few good words. Found Joe on Yelp enticed by the perfect five-star reviews after finding a fuel leak in my car. Brought it in and he had the bad fuel line diagnosed right away. I live near by and he invited me to come back while it was still on the lift and show me exactly what had to happen. That's a class move and I happily took him up on it. He had the job done (it's pretty delicate fix a huge pain in the a** on my vehicle) in a few hours and the final tab was super reasonable. I've had work done at probably a half dozen other shops around the area over the last eight years with some good experiences, some iffy experience. These guys were by far the best shop I've used and they'll have my business going forward. read more

I was very impressed with Joe. He was very nice, quick and gave me a fair price. I brought my car to him to have the check engine light looked at. It turned out to be a bad CO2 sensor which he was able to replace within an hour. The total cost of his service was less than $300. I will bring my car back to him for any future problems. read more
