YUM! Boo to my friend who was gate keeping thing place (jkjkjk) I ordered the polish plate to share with a friend of mine. It filled us both up! It came with kielbasa, potato pancakes, meat pierogi, mashed potatoes, and stuffed cabbage. Everything on that plate was so good! My favorite was the pierogi, potato pancake and stuffed cabbage. My other friend got a chicken cutlet that came with sauerkraut, beets and mashed potatoes. The cutlet was huge!! She said the dish was very good. We enjoyed our food as it felt comforting and homey. The service was friendly and she was informative of what we would be getting and how big the plate would be. It's not a restaurant style place. You order, find a place to sit, eat and go. We noticed a lot of working men go in and out for their lunch breaks and small families came in too. We didn't feel rushed either as we came before the lunch rush but I could imagine it being packed if you came during the lunch or dinner rush. This is a very simple cafeteria. You order your food, sit at a table and are called when your food is ready. We also bussed our own dishes! I enjoyed the food tremendously. The dishes were truly authentic. We were a group of five and shared pierogies, blinzes, ribs, chicken cutlets, fish, cucumber salad, beet salad, and a few other sides. Really delicious and authentic Polish spot! Tried their potato dumpling, the saurkraut and mushroom pierogi, the boneless pork chop, and their kielbasa. They also came with sides such as pickles and yogurt soaked cucumbers which were great for cutting the meat. My Polish friend said all dishes were authentic and spot on but found the pickles to be younger than she is used to. I personally though the pierogi was the star. The sauerkraut tang didn't overpower the mushrooms which has a noticeable flavor. The wrappers were also thinner than other places so the ratio of the stuffed contents was great. The pork cutlet reminded me very much of schnitzel/milanesa but less salty. The kielbasa was very flavorful and balanced. Finally, the pyza (a dish I've never tried before so I don't have a great comparison point) was a plain dish with a thick wrapping and pretty unseasoned pork filling. Overall, great spot. Most everyone spoke Polish and they were playing a jeopardy-like game show on the TV, and had several ad booklets which looked like yellow pages. Prices are fair. Service is quick and generally friendly though the staff was noticeably less warm towards non-Polish speakers. They are cash only though so come prepared! read more

No frills & delicious Polish home cooked comfort food. A must try! This place was recommended to me by my Polish friend and she claims it's the most authentic borscht in the city. It did not disappoint. It's the kind of homey hardy comfort food you want on a cold day. The cheese potato pierogis always hit and paired so well with the sauerkraut side. The pickles we're good with the meat pierogis. The Ukrainian borscht was warm and seasoned. It's decent portions for decent prices. The service was nice and food came out quick. This is a Mom and pop polish restaurant that reminds me of the cafeteria style dining that is common in Eastern Europe. The menu is taped on the wall and you order from the cashier and pay first. You then pick a seat and then wait for your food to be ready and you fetch it yourself from the cashier. The food was fairly priced for the size flavor and the amount of food. The cashier was nice enough to know we wanted to sample multiple things so for any entrees that come with one side- she did half portion of the sides so we could try diff types. Strong perogies spot to be found in Greenpoint. We came here for a snack--then we got a full meal for four. What doesn't sound like a lot is a lot. We ordered the potato and cheese perogies and the meat perogies for the table. Pretty sure it was beef, we didn't question the bricks of goodness. They are equivalent to a burrito each. Eating at Pyza isn't so much a dining experience as it is a public service to Greenpoint's Polish community, which is facing extinction at the hands of insufferable Williamsburg refugees. Pyza is not a very pretty place. It's not even a very homey place. It's the sort of small, sparse cafeteria you can find all throughout the former Eastern Bloc. Most people don't stick around, and opt instead for takeout. But the food itself can be quite good, particularly their chicken cutlets and red cabbage. That kotlet kurczaka can stand up to those served at Krolewskie Jadlo, which is something to be proud of. I do hope Pyza sticks around for a good long time. But it occupies a niche space during a time where restaurants are either hyper-systematized factories or overpriced yuppie hangouts. So if you want Greenpoint to be Greenpoint, and not just another playground for millionaires, give this place some of your business. read more

After reading others' rave reviews, I decided to give this place a try for the first time, for lunch. In the NYC Metro area, $15 would buy a decent lunch at a sit-down restaurant. Although the weather had finally began to warm up, it was still chilly enough for me to get hot soup, a main dish, and a side salad. I thought I'd get a cup of soup and a standard-size plate with the other two. Wow, was I surprised. The soup came in a large bowl.... with four slices of bread. The dinner plate seemed to have enough food for two people. And the side salad came with its own plate. Good thing I was hungry enough to eat every delicious morsel, save for one bread slice. Some other diners I observed boxed what they couldn't finish of their apparently equally-delicious food. We stoped in for lunch, since our spot went out of business. You know sometimes you keep going to a place out of a habit, and now that I tried Pyza, I wish I ate here sooner. My shredded beet salad was just like moms, and my daughter loved her mizeria-cucumber salad. White borscht was on point! I had potato dumplings and goulash. What to get: White Borscht, or anything. I came here as part of a food tour on which I passed up Jadlo and the other famous Polish restaurant in the area, because this seemed the cheapest and the best for a to-go order. I was way too full to be eating Polish food anyway. Yet I stopped in. It was a long walk from the door to the buffet-style food. They recommended an order of Borscht so I snapped it up and I absolutely loved it. It was filling and warm and delicious and very competitively priced, especially for this part of "Brokelyn" which is named as such for a very good reason. With all of these awesome Polish places in one part of town, you'd think you were in Warsaw. But if you never "saw a war" then you're not, because the Poles have seen plenty of conflict over the years. And my Pole, actually, has seen plenty of conflict too. If by conflict you mean deep, dark, sinister and dangerous places. There's a reason they call it "the Pole in the Hole." But back to this restaurant. It's buffet style, but the service is nice and the food is excellent. The White Borscht is top notch. They served me right before closing. This is seriously legit no-frills Polish food. If I hadn't come here with a friend who was in-the-know, I would probably have run out in intimidation! The line was long, but the menu is on the wall. You order with the lady behind the counter, she shouts your order to the 2 ladies in the kitchen and you wait on the side until your food is ready. Once your food is ready, they beckon you over, you pay and then you grab your food either on a tray cafeteria style if you are eating there or you take your to-go bag. Prices are par for the area, but the portions are gigantic. If Polish food were my comfort food, this restaurant would be my soul kitchen.
