Definitely more expensive than other salons I have been to in the past for hair color, but Paula does a high quality job! I called in early in the week, Paula let me know her rates for color treatment, and I was able to make an appointment for Friday noon. I had not died my hair for 3 years and my previous ombré had already been mostly trimmed off, so I came in with long and (basically) virgin hair. I wanted a medium-length, straight across hair style. I also wanted a lower-maintenance hair color balayage that could be done in one session. Paula suggested an ashy blonde color and it took about 5-6 hours for the Olaplex dye treatment and hair cut. Paula is very kind and conversational. The salon also has very comfortable massage chairs at the hair washing station and WiFi (I was even able to take a Zoom call for work), so the time passed quickly. It's been about a month since I had my hair done, and the color is still looking so fresh and my hair feels soft (I've been keeping up with Olaplex shampoo & conditioner). I had a very negative experience here, not because of the haircut itself, but due to the customer service. In general, it was easy to book an appointment, and it seems walk-ins are acceptable as well. There was plenty of parking which was great too. Paula was very welcoming and had great energy, so initially everything was going great. Paula sat me down and we discussed what I wanted (a trim), and after she washed my hair I was sat with Sonia to cut my hair. I eventually noticed that she had cut my hair in a way I didn't want (I had closed my eyes for a bit bc I was tired, my fault). I let her know, hoping to see if there was something that could be done to fix it. I was not upset, and if she told me there was nothing they could do, that would've been fine. However, Sonia called Paula over, who was immediately incredibly aggressive. She questioned and talked to me like a child, asking why I had not mentioned my request when we initially spoke. I was taken aback by her attitude, as she'd been so nice earlier, and I had been calm and courteous. I had not behaved in any way or said anything to warrant her attitude or response. It became clear to me that there had been a miscommunication in what I wanted, and I tried to explain that to her. But she kept speaking rudely, insisting that I did ask for a certain style, and asking me what I wanted them to do. I recall Paula gesturing at the floor and asking if I wanted them to put my hair back. At this point I'm so shocked, and try to tell her that I just wanted to see if there was anything we could do to soften what had been done, but let's forget it and we could just proceed. But she continued speaking angrily to me and ranting about how she can't read my mind. The kicker is, she eventually calmed down and did understand what I was saying about the miscommunication, and really did "fix" the issue. For some reason, they had me stand for the rest of my appointment and wouldn't let me sit down. They probably had a reason for that, but did not communicate it to me. The haircut itself was fine, but respect and kindness are extremely important to me. I will not be back. read more

6 hours and $$$ later, we made the most out of the situation, but I will never return again. I came here to support local businesses and saw the great reviews but I did not have that kind of experience. I reached out to Paula to get a toner and a trim but she said that my balayage was grown out and suggested toner and baby lights "we can cheat" so that we it would not be that pricey. Basically, adding subtle highlights to improve my look. I showed her a picture of what I wanted and she said she would "work her magic" 6 hours later the outcome was not what I wanted. In fact she charged me additional money to fix it. She was nice but aggressive in wanting me to like the "mushroom baby-lights" the highlights, the look was dated, I felt like I was in the late 90's again, I wanted to cry but kept it in. I just felt very uncomfortable and did not like her pushy approach at all. My fault for being a pushover. I told her I wanted my bangs dark, she insisted she was going to do very subtle baby highlights and not to worry. Then when my hair was dry, the base of my head was full of highlights with pink and purple tones. She said "Am I crazy, I don't see purple or pink tones" and most importantly I did NOT appreciate her asking a client that came in in what his thoughts were and if he thought it was nice! What about customer satisfaction? I wanted to cry, she just made me feel very, very uncomfortable. Paula will spin it however she wants but she was forcing her ideas on the customer and did not take feedback lightly. I'm sorry, we just don't have the same taste and she should consider that the customer has a right to disagree and try to work with the customer to make her happy. Instead she kept repeating how her previous work was so nice and this is what I want which was a waste of time and money. She is easily offended if you do not agree with her. She said no other stylist would fix the hair the way she did. Then she had the audacity to try to sell product to me and I can tell she was annoyed I didn't spend an additional $70 on product. Sorry this salon is not for me. *I updated my review to one additional star to thank the assistant for offering to pick up my food, which I thought was very thoughtful. In addition, the salon is modern, clean, plenty of parking outside and does offer a massage pad in the hair washing stations. However, I do stand by everything I said as it relates to my own personal experience. I want to thank Paula for her very professional response, good job! I love the new look! Paula was very patient and she walked me through the entire haircut to make sure things were okay with me before she made adjustments to the haircut. The photos with the past shoulder-length curls with curtain bangs were taken from 12/24/22 to 1/17/23. For the most recent photos, (3/11/23 to 5/5/23) I'm really happy with every haircut I've gotten from here! 3/11/23 - Deducted a few inches, added layers, and wispy bangs. It was super cute ^^ 4/23/23 - Before bleaching my hair, Paula made sure to confirm the placement of the bleach and color. God my 1st time here was definitely worth it. I got a thermal experience here about 2 weeks ago. I think the person that did my hair was the owner I'm not to sure but it was very relaxing. First off the chair for their shampoo area is a massage chair. That was so relaxing honestly. She shampooed my hair twice and was very gentle I almost fell asleep lol. I had an appointment with Paula to get my hair trimmed and colored after 8 months of quarantine (and a box dye, and cutting my own hair. LOL). Paula was super nice and friendly, just the sweetest girl. She called me before my appointment to chat about what I wanted done on my hair and to give me a quote. Unfortunately I wasn't able to afford the color that I originally wanted but Paula came up with a different plan and my hair turned out to be perfect! We spend the whole Sunday morning together, she was thorough, professional and did a great job on everything she did (color removal, olaplex treatment, hair color & hair trim). I didn't need to bleach my hair, my scalp did not hurt at all, my hair is a new color (copper brown-just in case you wanted to know) and is now all soft & shiny with Olaplex (it's magical!). I don't even know what to say... Paula is so sweet and incredible with hair!!! We had some scheduling conflicts in the morning, but when Paula came in she gave my hair so much time and attention! She took so much care to make sure my hair was even, shaped well, and basically perfect. I've never been to such a great hair salon in the Bay Area. The whole staff is very polite and welcoming. I requested a trim on my long layers, overall cleanup of the dead and split ends, but keep the length of the hair. Paula has mastered her craft and did such a great job! Usually when I ask for a trim, the stylist ends up cutting off more hair than I'd like, but Paula made sure she took off just the right amount and brought back so much life and bounce to my hair. It sounds kinda extra, but I am SO excited for my new hair. My head feels much lighter with all the dead weight cut off now. The salon itself is so clean and well sanitized. While I was waiting for my haircut I noticed the hair tools were being cleaned again, they had me use hand sanitizer and did a temperature check. I haven't had a haircut since February and was very nervous for an indoor haircut during COVID, but I felt so comfortable seeing the entire staff wearing masks properly and sanitizing a bunch. My friend recommended Paula at Q Cuts after she came here for the first time. She said it was the best haircut of her life, so naturally I have to listen to her and pay Paula a visit as well! I'm usually super picky with my haircuts but Paula nailed it. She recommended layers and curtain bangs or what she calls the "falling leaf" haircut. I'm super happy with the results! Not only did she take her time meticulously cutting my hair, but she also spent ample time washing my hair and giving me a scalp massage. Their wash stations also have massagers built-in. First time getting my hair dyed! BEFORE APPOINTMENT: 1. QUICK RESPONSES - I called in to ask questions. They weren't able to pick up my call but they got back to me via text promptly. I got all my questions answered within 20 minutes! 2. UPFRONT ABOUT COSTS - I asked them about the price and they were happy to respond! DURING APPOINTMENT: 1. FRIENDLY - I had the pleasure of meeting Paula and Long! They're both incredibly friendly people and they enjoy making conversation. I'm an introvert and I feel like I wasn't able to reciprocate their energy, but they kept upbeat throughout the session anyhow. And BOY, was I not expecting that! My barbers tend to lose the bubbliness once they find out I'm not talkative. But Paula and Long maintained the smiles and conversation! I felt like they were happy to work with me, even though I was unsociable the entire time. I felt loved. :) If you're introverted and you prefer to avoid conversation altogether, I'm sure you can let the staff know and they'll respect it. But I enjoyed that they made an effort to interact with me. :) 2. INFORMATIVE - Paula really took into consideration that it was my first time getting my hair dyed. She taught me a lot about the bleaching process, about why each step of the lifting process is important, and about the hair care afterwards. I'm extremely thankful for her help with choosing my new hair color! She was honest about what colors wouldn't work well with my hair -- how some colors might look nice but would fade within a few washes. She guided me through the dye selection process but she never forced any color upon me. Paula and Long brought out probably 20 colors for me to stare at for 3 hours. They were very patient with me. In the end, I feel like I made a very informed decision on what color to choose and I'm happy with how my hair looks. :) 3. COMFORTABLE - When I was waiting for the bleach to process or the dye to set, Paula and Long checked in on me from time to time to see how I was feeling. They also offered me water and snacks! (Granted, I had a ~6 hour stay.) Long would pop in occasionally to let me know how much longer I'd have to wait before the bleach finished processing. This seems minor but it gave me the impression that he cared about my time and that he was still acknowledging my presence, even when he wasn't actively handling me. 4. MUSIC - I'm a 2000s kid. The music reminds me of stuff I've heard on the radio from childhood. :] AFTER APPOINTMENT: 1. TIME-CONSUMING - My appointment took 6 hours! It's longer than I expected but... It's my first time dying my hair, which meant we had to spend a decent amount of time in consultation. I'm happy with this because I get to make an informed decision about my hair! Because it's my first time dying my hair and my hair's really dark and thick, we had to put my hair through three rounds of bleach. It was kind of inevitable so I don't really view this as an issue. I didn't have any obligations the day of the appointment, so I was fine with the 6 hours, but I'd encourage you to really check in with the staff if time is a concern for you. 2. HAIR CARE PRODUCTS - Today I learned that hair care is important for maintaining dyed hair! If you don't have products already, you might want to set apart a budget to buy them after your appointment. I didn't these factor these products into mind when asking about the cost of the appointment, so the overall appointment costed more than I expected but please keep this in mind! REFLECTION: The Q Cuts experience was amazing. I came here to get my hair dyed but by the end of the session, the dyed hair honestly just felt like an added bonus. I'm 100% sure I missed some points. Here's some pricing help if y'all were curious. On my mid-back length, straight Asian hair. Going from a level 3-4ish medium-dark brown to a level 9 lift would have been $700 minimum. My hair is naturally medium-dark brown but my ends were still bleached to around a level 6 maybe (I'm not a professional, I just googled it). I was glad Paula let me know before we started. I previously got a red ombré dye and trim for $200 at another salon I reviewed in Orange County. So this pricing was pretty shocking. I asked if going darker or doing a balayage/ombré would make it cheaper. Paula told me a balayage would be $600. I went for a cut only. I told her I wanted layers in my hair, she said okay. She ends up giving me a blunt cut. I told her 2 inches off, and she could do even more because we weren't doing color today. She tells me she's going to cut off one inch. Okay. She tells me my hair is brassy, unnecessary. I wanted straight across bangs, but she didn't ask what style before she starts cutting them. She ends up making them rounded which I didn't want, but it was getting too short. She said she wanted to cut it to my liking, but I didn't want it any shorter. They ended up kind of crooked but okay. The cut itself was $50. (If you look at my previous reviews there's a salon that does amazing cuts for half that price). I won't be coming back. read more

I really like the people here. They're friendly. It felt like a relative was cutting my hair. The lady, Paula, is very knowledgeable about hair types and styles. She helped me understand the different types of cuts I could have for a bob. She has attention to details and she perfectly delivered what I wanted. However, I have constructive criticisms. I made an appointment through the website so when I got there, I got checked in on time but I waited 30 minutes before I could get my appointment started. It seemed like there was a person ahead of me. I was finally done with a trim (I have short hair) after being there for 1.5 hours. Paula also had to step away for 5-10 minutes to help another appointment for consultation. I guess it's ok but I was almost done. I noticed that Paula used a razor to make just fine adjustments around my neck and I kept feeling the razor at my neck so it felt irritated. While I was showering later that night, my neck felt really irritated when water touched it. When I had my bf take a look at my neck, it was all red! See picture for reference. Please, please, please don't use a razor that is not guarded. It will razor off skin! Great people, but appointments should be honored and stay on time and no razors to the neck. I didn't expect much from a place I was trying for the first time. I left Q cuts really amazed and Happy. All thanks to Paula she did a great job listening to what I was asking for. I came in for a cut and some advice on my hair color. I wish I would of taken a before picture. Man we definitely did take an after one. I had work done in March for balayage and ombré on my hair at a different salon. But since then the color turned to orange, brown, some yellow and brassy tones. It was a hot mess and I basically wanted to even the color out. Now everything is even out and I lOVE the ash color. The Olaplex treatment also made my hair so soft and bouncy. Overdue post-- my family and I love going to Paula for our haircuts! Paula is friendly, welcoming, and sweet and I feel so comfortable getting my hair cut with her! It is always worth the drive to Castro Valley and I leave the salon always feeling satisfied. We have been going to Paula for many months now. Very clean space as well! Her staff even offer snacks and water if you are staying for a while in the salon, which is always so kind and appreciated. In the pics I attached, I asked for dimension and many layers as well as curtain bangs and Paula did not disappoint! I showed her a picture for my desired hairstyle and she got it spot on.
