And now, a long overdue review of Chris Lin's present career thesis. After moving to Denver, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that a former chef at Momofuku had ventured a restaurant in Denver. I've eaten at Q House 3 times now, each time just as memorable and surprising as the last. Service: Prompt, attentive, and informative. Our water glasses were always filled and our questions comprehensively answered (mostly questions around portion size, how many to order in our party, recommendations, and further descriptions of dishes to help with finally pulling the trigger on some food). Food: Star of the dinner show, for sure. Some notables: Beef Tongue and Tripe (cold appetizer), Fried eggplant, Stir-fried Brussel sprouts, Chong Qing chicken (such a great crispy fry, very tender chicken on the inside, and spiced very nicely with Sichuan peppercorn), Dan Dan noodles (thicker noodle), Mee Fun noodles (thinner rice noodle). Coconut cheesecake (currently on the menu as of 3/3/19) is heavenly - whipped and light with a subtle coconut flavor, paired with a delightful pandan whipped cream. Would skip the pork belly bun. Cocktails: Not the star of the show in my experience so far, but delightful nonetheless. (Disclaimer, I also usually drink beer.) Most recently had a Pear Sidecar which while good, didn't bring out the cognac (I think) with as much alcohol as I would have liked. That being said, I've imbibed heavily on dishes spiced with Sichuan numbing peppers, so perhaps my palette for alcoholic mixes was thrown off a bit. Would be a full 5 stars in my book if the cocktails were hold-the-phone fantastic rather than nod-your-head-in-approval good. Seating: Cozy but not tight. Available seating options include a booth for larger parties, bar seating, tables, and outdoor patio seating during those fab summer months. Definitely make a reservation ahead of time if you want to dine during prime dinner hours (1800-2000). Parking is not bad considering the lot next door, and ample space on Colfax (in my opinion; then again this is relative to my days aggressively stalking parking in SF). Ambiance: Casual but hip; busy during the dinner hours. Chic. Tucked in the understated, lower-key Bluebird District, Q House is a preferred (if not *the* preferred) dinner stop in the neighborhood. Reminds me a little of Hop Alley with the 90's hip hop bumping in the background, sans the black and white photos of rappers on the wall. Q House shells out fantastic, traditionally spiced, modern Chinese food. I'm fairly wary of Asian cuisine and Asian fusion sometimes, but the good folks over at Q House do an excellent job capturing the essence of Chinese (Sichuan and other) cuisine, while still making it approachable for the modern eater who is perhaps less acquainted with things like pig ear, tripe, or the general richness of Sichuan peppercorn chili oil. 10/10 have and will continue to return! read more

It's a smart looking restaurant in a space that was formally a blight on the neighborhood. We're happy to have them. Yet I may not return. It's SOOOOO Expensive!!! A meal with an app, vegetable dish, lo mein, and an entree shouldn't cost (w/tip) over $100 on Colfax!!! The duck confit lo mein shouldn't be $18 especially when it's bland and only seems to have the taste of soy sauce and sparse pieces of shredded duck. It may be confit yet when it's mixed in as a small portion in noodles it's hard to tell what it was. The ribs were tasty yet for $25 there are only 5 of them- not big ribs either but tender. That's not family style which is how they justify the price. In fact I don't feel any of it was the size of what one thinks of as family style. The eggplant was very good. I really liked it. Finally the 2 for $10 pork belly bao bun seemed juciy at first yet 1/2 of it was so dry and hard to get down. It was the same on both buns. I question the peanut pieces because they are so crunchy that they take away from the texture and taste of the bao bun. Also the menu says Pork Belly Bun, not bao bun which are two very different dishes. I love and regularly order both buns around the world (when I'm lucky) and have never seen anyone refer to one with the name of the other. I would try them again but not for those prices. I hope to order the buns again because they're typically my weakness. I also agree that the owners seem to make no effort to interact with guests. Finally at a restaurant with several empty 4 top tables the entire time we were there (and 1/2 empty when we left) the hostess said she couldn't seat us and acted like she REALLY couldn't care less if we stayed or left- and we're neighbors. We sat at the bar and while we forced some interaction with staff and management, we also listened to them bickering which is unpleasant. I don't understand why so many Denver restaurants open to great reviews. It's not great simply because it's open. read more

I'm not a spareribs person, but get the spareribs! So flavorful, tender, and finger licking good! My husband and I didn't have a reservation, and the restaurant is small, but we were able to get two seats at the bar on a Saturday night a little before 7:00 p.m. Our seats were closest to the kitchen, which gave us a good view of the action, so our bar seats turned out to be really great seats. The cocktail menu is creative, and we gave the 5 spice old fashioned and lychee martini a try, and both were good. The bartender was friendly, but the other staff members were a little aloof, maybe because we were at the bar. We sampled a good amount from the menu: the aforementioned spareribs, the pork belly buns, the crispy chicken wings, and the duck lo mein. I liked the duck lo mein, but wouldn't order it again because there are so many other things on the menu that I'd like to try. The spareribs were my favorite, followed by the pork buns and chicken wings for a tie. The pork was melt-in-your mouth tender and super rich; I wouldn't be able to eat more than one bun. The chicken wings were excellent and had a nice kick. I don't usually like ranch based sauces, but I even liked the ranch dipping sauce, which had an even nicer kick. Fantastic experience tonight with group of 3. Basically family style dining...shareable plates. My boyfriend was pretty proud of himself for finding this place, knowing that I love all varieties of Asian food. Total win on his part! I loved it!! We got there a few minutes before 5, knowing that we'd have a hard time getting a table without a reservation, but we were immediately seated at the chef's counter, which was super fun. We ordered the pork belly bun, the brussels sprouts (my personal fave), the fried chicken wings, and the monkfish (also incredible!!!). The lotus root that was part of the monkfish plate was also a fun surprise, as neither of us had tried that before, and really liked the texture (similar to a water chestnut). Today was my first visit to Q House! I picked up the duck lo mein this evening, which cost $15.12 including tax. They charge a 99 cent service fee to order online so I called instead. The lady who answered the phone and gave me my food was nice, friendly, and efficient. I was surprised she said it would be ready in 15 minutes as I expected it to be busier. I was super hungry and had been looking forward to checking out this place for quite some time. The food was perfectly fine, but it didn't quite hold up to my lofty hopes. The lo mein was a bit spicier than I'd like, but of course that's just personal preference. It did catch me off guard. I also found the portion a little on the small side for the cost. However the noodles were heavy and filling so that helps a bit. From the Yelp photos, it does look like their current take out lo mein is smaller than the pre-Covid-19 era dine in portion, so maybe that's a change. It's nice they have a walk up patio window to grab your order and I also was able to pay with my card over the phone. I'd give them 3.5 stars if I could! Unfortunately, my experience tonight was not so good. The reviews are great, and we had been for drinks before--food looked so good we were excited to try it. We had the twice cooked pork, which was just kind of dry and gamey, the shrimp fried rice which was so salty and fishy it was inedible. The duck lo mein was ok, but again, just so salty it was overpowering. The Chong quing chicken was so dry, it seemed like it was leftover and almost rancid. We threw all the food away. I know during these times, we have to be forgiving if things aren't up to par, but they struck out on all 4 dishes. I wanted to go to a modern Chinese restaurant for dinner and saw great reviews for this restaurant. It is a lovely restaurant with modern decor and warm ambience. The menu is quite limited with dumplings being noticeably absent. Hard to be a Chinese restaurant without a dumplings dish on the menu. I think at one time they did but for some reason has been discontinued. We ordered the chicken wings appetizer and for the main dishes, we got the Chong Qing chicken, bok choy, duck lo mein, braised pork fried rice. Everything was pretty good, except the bok choy. The chicken wing was delicious...and that green sauce was so awesome with it. The other entrees are good. The fried rice is not really fried rice but I respect that it's fusion. The bok choy was overcooked and bland. Chong Qing chicken dish is filled with chilies and chicken skin that costs $26 seems over the top. It's a bit pricey so it's a splurge. I can't say I am a fan of Chinese food, but this was a pleasant experience. My friend and I came here after having heard good things. Though I'm not big on spicy food, the server was very knowledgeable and helpful in suggesting items that were both gluten free and mild. The menu is family style, so he recommended that we shared a few things. We got there for happy hour, which included a few drinks and food specials. The lychee Martini my friend had was pretty and good, though not my style of drink: fruity and sweet, but it was not cloying. The house red wine was good and the pour generous. Our server was very attentive, though a little too attentive as he checked in on us too frequently and the ordering process felt a little rushed. The food was good and was prepared quickly. The kitchen was open and there was a Kitchen side bar. The Brussels sprouts were crispy and crunchy, tossed in a nice maple based sauce. We also tried a rice noodle dish that was supposed to have pork and mushrooms that I must have missed. Though I got a few shrimp, peas and egg strips, it seemed to be mostly rice noodles that felt greasy after a while. Sadly none of the desserts were gluten free. After reading other reviews, I had mixed expectations going in to Q House. The place is decorated in a trendy style, the menu is not a traditional Asian food menu - more of a modern take on traditional Asian flavors. Between 3 people, we ordered 4 dishes - pork belly baos, market vegetables, sacha ribs, and pork belly fried rice. This was just the right amount of food for us three, and the total including tip was ~$100 or $33 per person. The pork belly baos were good. The pork belly is nice and fatty - I believe it was braised (?). I would like them better if it came with a better sauce on the buns themselves, but the sriracha-like bottle they give you on the side was great and poured on each of my bites. The sacha ribs were really good. Sacha is like a Chinese barbeque sauce used for dipping meats and vegetables while eating hotpot or stir-fries. My brain was confused whilst eating these ribs because I could taste Sacha sauce flavor distinctly through the combination of spices on the ribs. Incredible! The pork belly fried rice was just okay. It was good to eat with the market greens - which were a baby bok choy. But both of those dishes were very familiar, comfortable, and something you would eat at home. And because of that - I didn't particularly enjoy the price of those dishes. Despite the price - the service, experience, and food will definitely have me coming back here with friends in the future. read more

This is a perfect little Asian fusion spot! Not a very big space so make sure you make reservations to make sure you get a seat. As per usual, I'll mention that they are following cdc guidelines and keeping things clean and sanitized. All of the flavors in each dish I tried were dynamite! We started with the wings, and honestly they are some of the best wings I've ever had. I like my wings crispy and they were perfect. For entrees we had the duck lo Mein and Chong qing chicken. The duck lo mein was excellent, Only cons ( and the reason this place didn't get 5 stars) was there was little to no meat in the dish which was disappointing. The Chong chicken also disappointing in terms of meat, half of the serving was just fried chicken skin not actually meat. But when I say the flavors were dynamite I mean it. I definitely over-stuffed myself because I enjoyed it so much. I'd like to go back and hopefully next time the meat portions are done better. read more

I have been scoping out good Chinese fusion restaurants in the area for a while and this one kept popping up so we thought we would check it out. We ended up getting the chickens wings, bok choy, and the duck lo mein. All were very good. The chicken wings were one of the best we have ever had, very crispy and a lot of flavor with a very interesting dipping sauce. The bok Choi has a ton of flavor I wasn't expecting, and a little bit of heat which we loved! And the duck lo mein is a staple there, highly recommend! Q House is open! It is extremely rare that we hit up a restaurant on opening weekend. But, I've been driving by for months patiently (ok, not so patiently) awaiting the grand opening. The suspense was killing me... so we snagged a reso on Sunday and had one amazing meal. We did our best and sampled as much as we could: Steamed buns - stuffed with the most melt in your mouth pork belly Pig ear salad - tossed with a spicy dressing and crisp vegetables, a perfectly balanced dish Fried smelt - perfectly crispy with a delicious ginger dipping sauce Duck lo mein - I forgot how delicious it can be ...and last, but not least... Smoked trout fried rice - so simple, so delicious. They also make a nice 5 spice old fashioned! It's a nice space, although tables are a little close together. We have eaten at Q House 6 times including tonight. The Yunan Brisket salad is amaaazing, the dressing is spicy and the beef is tender. The wings are great, if a tiny salty. The ribs are mind blowing in both taste and fall off the bone goodness, the braised pork fried rice is slightly sweet and has a wonderful mouthfeel. The shrimp were incredible, it's my favorite dish, spicy and fried, oh my! The pork bun is a must try if you haven't been before. I can't wait to try more dishes. We tried to eat there tonight, a Sunday evening, where there were several empty tables, and were told by the SNOTTY hostess "that there was an hour and a half wait for a three top". This is such a hard review to write. We had a great dinner at Q House. The monk fish was one of the best dishes I've had in a very long time, truly outstanding. HOWEVER, we sat at the chef's counter and watched one of the linecooks prep multiple batches of noodles and vegetables with his bare hands. No gloves. Big scoops of noodles and meat in his hands, then into his bowl and then into the wok. On multiple occasions used his bare hands to adjust the cooked noodles on the plate. I don't know how they made the eggplant so good - and I won't question it - nor should you. Order it and enjoy. The cauliflower was good too. It came with potatoes. The dish was more fusion than Asian but tasty. We got a noodle dish too, which I tried (and just avoided the shrimp). It was good but thin noodles are hard to eat with chopsticks!
