Crumb of brownie was super tender, on the verge of falling apart. But was moist enough to hang together and it ate okay with a fork. Portion size was large'ish. The chocolate cupcake with the cherry on top, by comparison, was pretty subdued and neutral in flavor. The frosting was standard butter cream so far as I could tell. This bakery was calm, organized, and above all, clean. The smell of baked goods was fresh, not overpowering or artificial. I ordered a butter croissant and it was warm with a flaky crust and soft center. The staff handled it with gloves and served it in a clean paper bag. We stopped in to try some goodies and boy, are we upset that we haven't made it to Q's Cakes yet when it's just down the street from our house. We grabbed the Chocolate Chip Brownie, Cookie Butter Brownie, Red Velvet Cupcake, and Cinnamon Caramel Cupcake. Before I get into the tasty treats, I'd like to take a moment to appreciate this little shop. The owners are just as sweet as their baked goods. Although we were all in masks, I could tell we were greeted with a smile and we were made to feel at home with the friendly conversation that ensued as we ordered. We started off with the Red Velvet - the cupcake was deliciously moist and the cream cheese frosting was delectable - not too sweet and not too tangy. The cupcake was a little bit on the smaller side, but we still felt it was worth it's price. As my sweet tooth would tell you, there is no such thing as a bad cupcake My husband then said "he didn't feel like another cupcake" (who says that) so we moved on to try a couple bites of the brownies. To start, these brownies are HUGE! I'd say they're at least 3"x4" which is a great bang for your buck. With the Chocolate Chip Brownie, I was really expecting a super rich, smack-you-in-the-face chocolate experience and it fell a little short for me - now that doesn't mean that it wasn't still super yummy and I didn't eat the whole thing With the Cookie Butter Brownie, I didn't know what to expect truly. One bite in and this brownie immediately reminded me of a Brookie (part brownie, part cookie deliciousness). This one is right up my husbands alley as he's not chocolate obsessed like me. All in all with the brownies, they didn't blow me out of the water, but I would most definitely return to try all of the other flavors Q's has to offer. Last but not least, we dug into the Cinnamon Caramel Cupcake. Let's just take a pause to talk about the ADORABLE mini cinnamon bun that comes on the top of the cupcakes - I mean, come on, it's so cute! In terms of taste, I wasn't sure how cinnamon and caramel we're going to combine here, but it was actually really tasty! Good customer service alone would make us sure to return to support this black-owned small business in the future even if the treats were nothing special, but this definitely is not the case. I learned about Q's Cakes at a recent Yelp event. Q was not only giving us sample cupcakes, she was actually teaching us how to make beautiful little creations by adding a little frosting and then attaching cut mini-marshmellows to make the cupcakes look like flowers. They were so cute! Any yummy, too! Q was really nice and kept checking on us to see if we needed help...or more marshmallows! We could not choose. We got a dozen!! It was $30 and it was 100% worth it. The love that goes into these cupcakes!!! The Pina Colata was magical. I'm not sure if there is rum in them but you get those nodes mixed with coconut shavings, fall-apart-in-your-mouth-moist cake, and a vanilla buttercream frosting. TAKE MY MOUTH BACK!! I've never had a cupcake like this. Second, red velvet cake: I am really picky with these because my mom made me and my bro red velvet growing up every year for our birthdays. A lot of people just add red dye to a chocolate cake and call it "red velvet." Naww, it is the use of apple cider vinegar and TLC that makes red velvet a cake of its own. This was SPOT ON!!! The nice buttercream frosting helped it because it's usually paired with cream cheese frosting and can be too much, not this place. The 'simple' vanilla cupcake: not simple at all. Moist, creamy, not overpowering in the least. Third, the German Chocolate one's.... HOLY MOLEY!! Again, people make a chocolate cake and put a coconut-like frosting on it and call it German chocolate, frauds. Not this woman!! The very light, fluffy, and moist actual German chocolate was the base, inside the historical coconut-flaked-icing was out of this world!!! Lastly, the Strawberry Crunch-- this is a making that is ALL HER!!! I had no reference to go off of except box strawberry cake. Writing this I have a visceral reaction, in the best way. This was, just like the others, super moist but didn't fall apart till it hit your mouth. The buttercream had a strawberry crunch topping that made the textures in your mouth pair with the sheer amazing strawberry flavors, but nothing was overwhelming. An elite brownie perk got us in the door of this sweet little shop in the university district. Boy are we glad it did. That visit introduced us to the Qs cakes cupcakes. Being house-made and hand-decorated, they're worth the difference in price from the standard fare at grocery stores. Most especially the banana cream cupcake, with its super-secret extra shot banana custard at the bottom. I don't want to ignore the brownies that got us in the door, even if the tiny cakes are the things of dreams. The brownies (we had the classic fudge and the cookie butter) were gooey, rich, and had that perfect slightly-crisp exterior that made us want to go right back in and get a couple more. Unlike the ones I make at home, though, they stayed soft, rich, and gooey for three days in the fridge before I finished the last bite. We got our wedding cake at Q's and had a great experience. We scheduled an initial tasting and sampled a handful of cupcakes to get a sense of the different options. I am a California resident, but my wife and I got married in New Mexico last month. Planning an out of state wedding is stressful, so I am so happy we were given the recommendation of Q's Cakes and Sweets. I cannot say enough about their level of customer service and relaxed, yet professional, manner. When we arrived for our wedding we only had two days to do all of the last minute planning/consultations. Q got us in the day before our wedding for a consultation which included 4 very large servings of our top flavors to taste, complimentary (she even packed up the leftovers to take with us!). She was more than happy to view yet another cake photo sample when we changed our idea we had for the look of our cake for the tenth time, and one of the other bakers even offered to visit nurseries for us to find succulents for the decor! Even though we declined, she wrote down several nurseries for us to visit, including their addresses, to find what we were looking for. To top it all off, she delivered the cake to our wedding venue in Bernalillo at no charge. Our cake came out absolutely gorgeous! We received so many compliments on not only the look, but the taste. The owner seemed really nice and said business had been good lately. The brownies that I had gone for were bigger than I thought they were going to be. They had red velvet, pecan, chocolate chip, salted caramel, cookies n cream, and cookie butter and a few varieties of cupcakes. I had watched a Facebook live video she posted yesterday saying there were going to be French macarons, chocolate dipped Oreos, and milkshakes later that week. But, I got the red velvet and pecan. I think the red velvet was the favorite and it was a little softer and more moist than the pecan. I didn't get to talk to the owner much, but I told Queneesha that I sometimes stalk her Facebook and Instagram business pages with how good her cakes always look. Yes, I live in GA and about to write a review for Q's in NM where I've never been. Over and over and over and over again for almost 5 years now, i have ordered and she's shipped to me. I've always been a great fan of her rum cake and it has just the right amount of rum and sometimes i order with raisins. I recently discovered her coconut cream cake and it is moist, tasty and DELECTABLE. It arrived in a timely manner and i only got to eat 1 slice before the rest evaporated(i live with a food monster). I really wish i was able to get her for my wedding but flying her out here and all that stuff. Q is very pleasant with a great personality. Visit on 2/6/17: I used to be so good about not eating sweets, but the past year and a half at UNM was so stressful for me that I started eating more cookies and cupcakes. Not coincidentally, my weight and pants size seem to have changed with this greater intake of sweets, and not in a good way. Queenie is very accommodating and friendly. As a matter of fact, the whole staff is. My friends and I were treated to samples of red velvet brownie, chocolate-dipped strawberries, miniature cupcakes, and chocolate-covered Oreos. There were even gluten-free cupcakes for my friend's girlfriend who eats gluten-free. Everything was fresh and delicious, made in house. Queenie puts the "art" in culinary art-- they look too good to be edible, and yet they are. Just let the pictures speak for themselves. This woman knows how to channel her inner creativity. What can I say about Q's bakery? Well, I ordered a lemon blueberry cake and they knocked it out of the park! I like supporting local. I decided to give q's a try because I needed some dessert for a party. I chose her biscochito, chocolate with chocolate frosting and her vanilla. My favorites were her chocolate and biscochito. Her vanilla cake this day was a little dry. The only thing I was disappointed about was that she does not fill her cups all the way to the top. I think most cupcake places I've eaten at fills their cakes to the top of the cups. For the price that people serve cupcakes I think all bakers should maximize and fill up those cups.
