The first place we stopped by after picking up our rental car and it was WORTH IT. It's a small place with some outdoor standing/seating but looks like it's primarily for takeout. We came Saturday morning and I was expecting a long line but we only had a few people ahead of us. We go the last green chile croissant and I'm so glad we got to try it because it was amazing. Also loved the red chile sourdough loaf. The elote cup thing didn't hold together well but overall everything was amazing and it was a great start to our New Mexico trip. Finally made it on a Sunday morning! Shocking there wasn't a huge line. There were 4 people in front of me. Loved the presentation of all the sweet and savory options they had. The cashier was super nice too. I ordered 26 bucks worth which was equivalent to 3 pastry items, a baguette and an iced coffee. Everything was delicious! Burque Bakehouse is an absolute must if you visit Albuquerque! A street-side walk up shop with amazingly delicious pastries - both sweet and savory. The specialty coffees and beverages (Rhubarb Green Tea!) accompany the elegance of the menu. Artichoke Danish is pictured with a Boston Cream Pastry. But we seriously crave the exquisite Roman style "pizza" on focaccia, and the home-made grahams. While it is a walk-up shop, there are usually a couple available stools outside to enjoy your purchase on site. You can tell the staff are also in love with the menu - they are so friendly and knowledgable and happy to talk about their favorites, too. This is a business obviously grown from passion. Delicious pastries and great coffee here at The Burque Bakehouse. The line to order was relatively short as I eagerly awaited the window with all their bakehouse treats. I ordered many treats for myself and bestie. One pastry that caught my eye was the classic butter croissant dough with activated charcoal, glazed blood oranges, and blood orange curd. I'm not sure if this is only a seasonal item. The colors are beautiful! It was quite sweet, however the blood orange tartness aided in the flavors giving it a bit of tartness. The Boston Cream Cruffin looked mighty tasty. It's made with their signature croissant dough rolled up and filled with vanilla pastry cream and dipped in dark chocolate ganache. Tried this place for the first time last Friday. I was very impressed with all the baked good options both savory and sweet. Amazing must try bakery. Interesting but delicious flavors added to well made in house pastries and breads. Food so good my phone couldn't even eat first, I had to take a bite. Staff was friendly and the service is fast even with quite a line. The calamansi danish was bright and citrusy, just the right amount of sweetness. Ham and cheese croissant was heaven and a great savory treat. The green chile and jack cheese was 1000/10, just a little kick of spice but crunchy and well seasoned. Sweet and delicious. The almond croissant is ok. The croissant is not as soft, I bought it and stored it until next morning and it was ok. The focaccia of the day with kale and white bean is incredibly tender , flavorful and satisfying. I will keep buying the daily special. The sourdough olive bread is a bit too firm on the outside, many prefer it this way. I prefer a bit softer and crisp. Perhaps 5 minutes less of baking. I will ask for more par-baked. Big chunks of olives and the sourness of the sourdough is perfect. Inside is nice and soft. 4 out 5 stars. The rhubarb pastry is incredible and it scares me to post publicly for fear it will sell before I buy it next time. I felt as if I was on the streets of Paris. Incredible rhubarb pastry. I've driven past Burque Bakehouse so many times and finally decided to stop and wow, I'm so glad I did! Every time I've gone by, there's been a line wrapping around the building, so I figured it had to be good. And it absolutely is! This spot is a walk-up bakery, not a sit-down place.. you order at the window. I got a simple drip coffee, a berry crisp danish, and a Boston cream cruffin. Everything was so fresh and flavorful and totally worth the hype!! It's tucked along Broadway in a little neighborhood area, so it's easy to miss if you're not paying attention, but don't drive by like I used to... stop! The line moves quickly, and the staff are super friendly and helpful if you have any questions. Just a heads up: they're only open Thursday through Sunday, 8 AM to 2 PM (or until sold out), so plan accordingly. Trust me, it's worth the wait and the limited hours. My wife and I visited your bakery today (first time for us both). She can't walk well and I require a walker (short distance...wheelchair for longer), she remained in the van. I waited patiently leaning on my walker behind an older gentleman (like me) to finish his order. When he was done he turned toward me and pointed out the step/curb nearby and advised caution, I thanked him and moved toward the order window. In those few seconds an apparently "self-entitled" young woman who had walked up on the opposite side of the older man "well" after I had arrived, moved up to the window and began placing her order as if I was invisible. This seems to be a common occurrence these days and I am becoming used to this kind of discourteous "born-in-a-barn behavior" ...obliviously rude is obliviously rude. My reason for the single star is that the individual taking orders said nothing about this at all to the "young entitled" like maybe...."this man was ahead of you" but no such common courtesy. I couldn't remain standing much longer so we left without sampling the wares. At the base of it I was becoming curiously wary that the rude obliviousness at the front window might extend to the work area and that the aforementioned wares would reflect the same inattention. My and my wife's money is as green as anyone else's...if they don't want it (or need it) they don't have to have it. read more

However, there are other bakeries that I'd probably choose over them unrelated to the taste/quality of their baked goods. Food: 5 The pastries are always delicious. They have fruit danish, flaky coconut rolls, kouign amann, banana bread and much more along with coffee and a variety of drinks. So let me back up a little and say that they don't have a menu for these pastries. You basically walk up to the window and order. Samples of these were displayed in front of you. Looking at the ratings, our thoughts are not exactly what others think. We have been looking for a local bakery where we could pick up some bread for the Thanksgiving holiday. We have family coming in and wanted a step up from standard grocery store fare, without baking it ourselves. My wife found the Burque Bakehouse online and we decided to make a run to it and see if they had what we wanted. They did not have standard white loaf bread offered, but based on recommendations by the lady in line we picked up a loaf of their red chile bread. We also tried a ham and cheese croissant, an almond croissant, an apple danish, and a green chile cheese croissant. The red chile bread was interesting and made a decent sandwich using a smear of cream cheese and some black forest ham. It was ok, but we both tired of the flavor long before we finished the loaf. The ham and cheese croissant we ate fresh from the bakery and it foretold the consistent experience we had. The taste was ok, but all the bread was dense. None of it was as light as a good croissant should be. Of the items we purchased and tried, I liked the apple danish the best. The apple mixture reminded me of a good Dutch apple pie. As with all, the pastry was dense. This may have been an off day so we will try them again sometime. The length of the line outside the shop shows people love this little shop and I urge everyone to give local businesses like this a try. I don't want to dissuade anyone from giving them a try based on this first visit. Also, there is virtually no seating. This is a walk up, order at one window and pickup at another when your number is called. No one can tell me that this isn't one of the best bakeries in town. Yes, it isn't a sit down place. Yes, there's always a line. BUT The staff is always kind and happy. The menu is full of interesting, seasonal bakes. The man in the window commented that we were getting all the bread. Which we did. We didn't come to play. So let's get down to the serious business of bread. After we got our items, we sat at a bench in a nearby park to try everything. As we ate, the shade was replaced by the sun, making it very hot. Each item gradually added to build up to an overall delectable experience that made us feel even warmer, and we had to get up several times during eating so as to reorient ourselves so that we could regain our wits and continue on with the next item. Service: the line wrapped around the corner of the building, and it took 20 minutes to get to the window. Too long to make me want to go back at ~10am. The wait to get the food was much shorter. Ambiance: not much ambiance. The employees were friendly, but it felt a bit impersonal (more of a go-to-the-window-and-get-your-food) as they were trying to serve many people. Food: Breads: Red chile loaf - I almost didn't get this, but it was a last-second addition, and I'm glad I did. It's got a good spicy kick, and there are occasional garlic pieces. It sniffs so good, the inside is red, and you can see the red chile diffusely throughout. Pistachio pear cardamom loaf - the pears were pretty sparse, and I wish there were more. The pistachio isn't terribly noticeable. But the cardamom flavor was great. Pinon, pecorino, black pepper loaf - this was really good. Possibly my favorite item, and definitely my favorite bread. Unique combination of flavors. There were chunks of pecorino cheese, including one sticking out the side of the bread (fun), but I think there should be more cheese. I think it would also be good with melted cheese (warm up the loaf), which one could try at home. Pastries: Plum danish - the plum is tasty but it's a pretty standard pastry and not the most exciting one Calamansi danish (curd, almond poppy crumble + lemon glaze) - tasty, citrus is always a good choice. The almond poppy crumble is memorable visually but stands out less taste-wise. Seasonal jam bun (strawberry? rhubarb) - one of my favorites. The rhubarb is really good. Could use a little more jam though. Boston cream cruffin - a sensual dessert. I had to clear my throat after watching the way the cream oozed out of the bottom. The inside was moist from the cream. Banana miso butterscotch seasonal danish - so good and delectable. The butterscotch + miso cream made the inside nice and moist, like the Boston cream cruffin Tomato pesto and chèvre seasonal danish - a savory pastry that isn't unique but was very well done. We got a variety of treats to go. Outstanding pastries. Our cruffins and chocolate croissants were crunchy, flaky perfection. The freshness was obvious in everything. Nothing was obnoxiously sweet. The red chile bread had a glorious chewy crust and a distinct chile kick. It was wonderful with butter. The only thing we didn't love was the special turnip and mushroom pizza. A strange mix of flavors that came across as an unsuccessful experiment. Cappuccinos were widely enjoyed, but were not as special as the pastries and bread. This is one of the best bakeries in town. I've been here more than once but somehow hadn't managed to review them yet. After one of those medical procedures requiring a liquid diet and fasting, the first stop I wanted to make was Burque Bakehouse. We got a calamansi danish, a jam bun, a kouign amman, and a cafe de olla cold brew. Oh, what goodness! The kouign amman was so buttery and delicious with the caramelized sugar, and I loved the contrast between the sharp citrus and the sweet laminated dough of the calamansi danish. The jam bun had lovely apricot (I think) jam between layers of pastry. And after more than 24 hours without caffeine, the cold brew really hit the spot. We also bought a loaf of challah to make into French toast this morning. Of course we sampled some before making breakfast and it was fantastic. In the past, we've tried their croissants (flaky perfection) and their pinenut, black pepper, and pecorino sourdough. It's all so good! read more
