Fast forward post-Covid, my daughter needed her prom dress shortened, within two weeks. I thought of Sherry, only to learn that she retired, but her cousin took over the shop and changed the vibe. They still do alterations, yet they specialize in formal wear. When we were there, they were servicing a bride. They also sell formal gowns and high end accessories. Alterations for formal wear are not cheap, but they gave us a reasonable price for adjusting her tulle and the dress was ready in one week as promised. It was perfect! I can't recommend Quality Alterations and Bridal highly enough after the amazing last-minute job they did altering a jacket for my (now) wife before our outdoor wedding. We had planned an outdoor ceremony in Washington state, but a sudden cold front threatened to derail our plans. The temperature was now set to drop by over 15 degrees (into the high 40s) on the day of our wedding, leaving my wife less than two days to make adjustments before we were scheduled to leave. My wife frantically visited multiple stores to find something that would match her off-white dress. When she finally found a jacket that was a matching color, it was at least two sizes too large. Desperate, she brought the jacket to Quality Alterations and they worked magic. Despite the incredibly tight timeframe, the owner worked with speed and precision, somehow making all the necessary adjustments in just two hours. My wife was thrilled with the result. The owner had taken great care to ensure the perfect fit, taking in the back and slimming the sleeves. The quality of the work was exceptional; when I saw the jacket and heard the story--I couldn't believe it had ever been altered. On our wedding day, the jacket looked stunning. It was stylish, warm, and comfortable. It looked like it came with the dress. My wife felt confident and received numerous compliments on how beautiful she looked. We were able to enjoy our outdoor ceremony without worrying about the cold, and the photos turned out beautifully. I came to this tailor because of their great rating and reviews here on Yelp. However, my experience was absolutely awful. I brought my tuxedo to be altered for an upcoming Saturday night wedding that was 2 weeks away. The owner was very friendly and told me that she'd have it done, no problem, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. The price was definitely high, but the owner's assurance along with the positive reviews on Yelp gave me confidence that the job would be done well. On that Wednesday, I showed up to pick up my tuxedo mid-day and was shocked to find a handwritten note that said that the shop had closed early for Thanksgiving. Never was this mentioned to me when discussing my deadline needs for this wedding. I figured that the shop would, at least, be open the Friday or Saturday after Thanksgiving. Guess what? It was closed through the weekend! I called and left multiple messages over those days and to date have not received a response AT ALL. It's been a week and a half. And I still do not have my tuxedo back! I had to make last minute arrangements to rent another tuxedo--and not one I would have ever chosen to wear had it not been for this situation. The least I would have expected is a call to acknowledge their mistake and apologize. Caveat emptor! I cannot comment on the quality of the work, but I can definitely tell you about the obvious lack of customer service and ability to stick to their word! The tailor assumed out loud that I was pregnant as soon as I emerged wearing my wedding dress for my initial fitting. As in, said, "You're pregnant, right?" upon seeing me in the dress. (I am not and had not said anything to suggest otherwise.) She then charged me $500 (discounted to $400, to be fair) to remove the beaded appliqués at the bottom of the skirt and reattach them after the skirt had been hemmed. Within a half an hour of wearing the dress, they started coming off. By the end of the evening, nearly all of them were peeling off. There was also a straight pin left in a hastily sewn cup in the bodice that stabbed me in the hand when I was putting on the dress. I would not go again or suggest anyone else I know go there. read more

Less Short Story: Having moved late last year, and having no weddings or formal events to attend, I lost track of my suit and didn't think too much about it until the very last moment. After calling around to various shops and tailors, Quality Alterations was the only one willing to take on a very last-minute alteration for a cheap (read: fast fashion) suit I bought to tide me over until I can track down my good one. The folks there were thoughtful, incredibly accommodating, and able to turn them around with lightning speed. I have been going to Quality Alterations for all my alteration needs and my family/friends have also started coming here. The most important alteration I came here for was for my wedding dress (married 09/21/19) and Ekram (the owner) did a fantastic job. My dress is super detailed and I needed the length to be shortened in the front so this was no easy feat! I also asked her to add bustles to the dress. I came in for my first fitting to make sure we liked the length before she cut the dress as well as where we should add the bustles. At my final fitting, she added extra details to the dress to hide any stitching to it to make sure it was perfect, I couldn't even tell it was altered! It was absolutely beautiful from the length to the bustles, the work done was amazing. If you are looking for a place to get your dream dress or any type of clothing altered at a reasonable price, I recommend Ekram and her team 100%. Discovered this place while working in Evanston, and started by bringing in dresses and pants for work (the cheap ones you get at H&M, then I would get them tailored like a glove to last me forever). Then when the time came to get married, even though I lived and worked in Chicago, I knew who to trust with my wedding dress, and did all my fittings and alterations at Quality Alterations. The team is AMAZING. The prices are VERY fair. All timeline goals were met, including an extra alteration I decided on once I got home. Such attention to detail--they know exactly what they're doing! They even helped create a bustle (my dress didn't have one) and taught my sister how to do it for the big day (we settled on a bustle that went all the way to the waist, which I had never seen before but it kept the dress shape truer and more natural). Because of my short legs and long torso, "regular length" pants usually seem to have the best overall fit for me, but I end up having to have them hemmed. I hadn't had much tailored since moving to Evanston, so I was in desperate need of finding a good shop nearby. The ladies at Quality Alterations were very sweet, and the woman measuring me took her time to make sure she got everything pinned correctly ... even on a pair of particularly challenging dress pants with a slight boot cut. When I picked up my alterations, my only concern was some messy stitching on a pair of jeans (see pic). To be honest, this was the first time I've had denim tailored, so I'm not sure if this is the norm for thicker material? Since I was so happy with everything else and the jeans are for casual wear, I wasn't concerned enough to ask about the stitching. I was quoted a little over a week for two hems, but was pleasantly surprised to receive a call that my pants were ready days early. Price was a reasonable $12 for the jeans and $15 for the dress slacks; I asked about another pair of wool dress slacks with lining and was quoted $20, which seemed a bit high. Parking in the area can be rough during the busiest of hours downtown, but during off times, there's free street parking (near the park), and metered parking up and down the street in front of the shop. read more

At last--a reliable place for simple alterations. My experience at QA is a complete 180 degrees away from my recent debacle at a North Shore outfit which shall remain nameless. 1. Service On my first visit, the lady inside unlocked the door for me despite it being 8:30--the posted hour is 9am. On another trip near closing time on a Saturday night, I breezed in at 5:57 to get my pants (no problem) but they had some kid up on the measurement block with a bunch of pins in him. Clearly he wasn't going anywhere for a while, and my point is that they will apparently flex the opening and closing times to accommodate customers. Furthermore, with my alteration requests, they filled out a form of which I retained a carbon copy. The requested work was very clearly stated, as well as my full name and phone number. Plus, on both occasions, the lady measured the line of the hem, asked for my verbal approval, and pinned up the material right in front of me. 2. Price Only eight dollars ($8) to hem a pair of pants. Seems like a very fair deal, especially compared to the Andrew Jackson that I had to surrender at the other place. 3. Quality I took one cheaper pair of pants there as a test, and they came back looking great, with nice, modest stitching and exactly the length that I had asked for. Then I submitted a beloved, expensive pair, with equally fine results. So thanks to these two experiences, Quality Alterations will be getting all of my tailoring business from now on. So incredible! I needed a LOT of work on my wedding dress and she did such an amazing job. Needed it taken in like three sizes and wanted to change the shape, add lace to the fabric, get it shortened several inches, and adjust the neckline and it was very affordable and done in a very reasonable amount of time. Absolutely recommend! Very skilled alterations! I was close to hopeless when my "custom" bridesmaids' dress was completely off in sizing in the chest. Quality alterations did wonders! I genuinely would've had to have walked down the aisle with an unzippable dress! I will say that they seemed a little forgetful; as this dress had many issues I came in a couple times for fittings (which I expected) but the things that I would be told would be done by my next trip would be done typically weren't. After researching seamstresses/alterations for 2 weeks, I ended up going to this place. I wanted something that was not downtown (avoid parking issues), Gus was on vacation, and reasonably priced. I read about this place on one of the yelp threads, and apparently, she is very highly recommended on Angie's List. I talked to her a couple times before I drove all the way to Evanston, and she seemed like she definitely knew what she was doing, so I gave it a shot. I went on a Saturday and she has one assistant, who apparently doesn't interact w/ the customers, so she kept leaving me on the fitting platform to go deal with all of the influx of ppl going in and out. I had several items, so this was not fun, especially since I was keeping an eye on the meter. I never felt like I had her full attention and she kind of haphazardly pinned things. I asked her if she needed to take any measurements but she said no. I kept asking her and finally, she took my hip measurement for the skirts. I requested a day that was over a week out and she basically said, "no promises." Also, one of the skirts was a little more complex, and she said I might need to come in for another fitting. I told her that wasn't realisitic, because it's a huge drive from my house to her shop. The next day I realized that she hadn't measured my hip to the where I wanted the skirt to end, and since I had 6 skirts there, I called her back and confirmed that all the skirts would be the same length. She told me to measure a skirt I had and call her back. (Why didn't she just measure me while I was there like I requested??) I called her back w/ the measurement and asked her, "What was the measurement you came up with?" I wanted to see if what I measured was a match--since I'm definitely not a seamstress, I wasn't sure if I had measured correctly. She told me she was busy, so I said I would call her back. By this time, I was starting to get cold feet and thought about cancelling the entire order, but I didn't want to drive all the way back for no work done. Then she called me back and said she couldn't work with me because I didn't trust her. No kidding -- you didn't take any measurements and talked to other ppl the entire time I was in there!! But still, you know how you are going to say something, and someone says it to you first? Ooooh, that burns! So I ended up driving all the way BACK up there, picking up the clothes and returning home w/ no work done. 3 hours out of my life for nothing, not to mention gas. I should have known someone w/ no Yelp reviews was going to be bad news. Would definitely NOT recommend her. read more

There are few people as fine and upstanding as Sharry, the owner. I brought in a Cashmere coat that needed to be repaired and due to the poor condition, she told me it could not be done. I said that I would have to buy a new coat. She told me about a customer that brought a coat in 3 years before and she repaired it, but after many calls to the customer to come pick it up, he told her to throw it out because he did not want it. She kept the coat and brought it out and told me to try it on. I did and it fit like a charm and was a really nice coat. She told me that I could have it. I offered her some money and she said no, it was mine. So, she repaired a coat 3 years ago and I'm guessing she never got paid. And then someone comes in for a repair and gets a free coat instead and walks out without paying anything. She will now always do my alterations, and I will always recommend her. read more

I have never written a Yelp review before but figured that I should as a "thank you" for such excellent service. My "custom-ordered" bridesmaid's dress was so big on me that it hardly stayed up. It's pretty complex with a few layers and a zippered, reinforced bodice. I reluctantly took it to Sherry at Quality Alterations expecting to pay $100 for the bodice alone and hem it myself afterward. Instead, I paid $65 for the dress to be brought in significantly at the waist (which required that she cut along the zipper), as well as a 4" hem. It was perfect and only took a couple of weeks. The woman who owns this place is very sweet. However, I brought my 10-year-old down coat in to have the zipper replaced, and it did not happen. The owner insisted the coat needed to be dry cleaned first. OK, in order to get the zipper replaced and since it was the end of the season, I agreed. She then said the zipper just needed to be repaired. The bill for all of this was $29. If my zipper would be replaced I thought that sounded fair. So, I paid. A few days later I picked up my clean coat with the same zipper. Two days later the zipper broke again. I am the customer. I came in to have the zipper replaced. I acquiesced and gave in to the owner believing she knew best. However, I knew my coat, and I knew what needed to be done. I learned my lesson for $29. I will not return to this place and hopefully will find a cleaners that does the alterations that I ask to be done. read more

I went in here for the first time last week to ask about getting an alteration done on a shawl I had gotten as a gift. It was kind of a weird request, so I wasn't sure how they were going to react. Luckily they were able to help out and were able to complete the job on time. The place is run by a very sweet couple. You may want to call ahead if you need alterations done because the husband usually wants to wait until his wife (the seamstress) is present. Let me start off by saying that these girls are amazing!! I came across this place after I spend the weekend in tears because David's Bridal messed up my wedding dress. With less then a month before my wedding I was in full panic mode.I called so many places before i came across Quality. Many places quoted prices that were more then my dress it self. I called the place and instantly asked if i could send a picture of what i wanted done to dress. They gave a number and email. They told me they could do it but needed to see the dress. Unfortunately i am a teacher and couldn't make it until 6:30 and they were very accommodating. I showed up with my dress. They spend a good amount of time explaining to me what needed to be done. They were very honest about the expectations for the dress because of what i wanted done. I appreciate people being honest as opposed to telling me what i want to hear. They started right away on my dress. They pinned it and asked me to come back in two weeks for a fitting. Because what i wanted done to the dress was not an easy job they made sure it looked AMAZING. I had to come back for 2 more fittings to make sure the dress looked great. I couldn't be happier with the way my dress turned out. The price was more then reasonable for the amount of work they put in for the dress. These girls saved the day. Sharry was so helpful in repairing my leather jacket, which I had ripped. We spoke on the phone first and she was very pleasant and sounded like she knew what she was talking about. When I came into the store, she was honest in saying that she didn't think she could repair my Marc Jacobs leather jacket. I wanted it fixed somehow, and Sharry and I brainstormed to come up with a solution: take the suede from a jacket she was going to sell, cut out two pieces, and replace both the ripped panel and the parallel unripped panel to create a new look. I was so pleased we came up with an out-of-the-box solution. She told me it would be ready in 2 weeks, but she called me 3 days later and said it was ready. How's that for service? Wonderful! They did an absolutely phenomenal job with my wedding dress on very short notice. When I ordered my wedding dress from a place in Chicago, they told me the dress could take up to six months but they'd try to get it sooner. Unfortunately, it took just over 6 months and put me on a very tight timeline before my wedding (just a couple weeks!). I contacted Quality Alterations to ask in advance if they could do the dress in such a short time. They were SO helpful communicating in advance about what would be possible and how long it would take. Then they did a truly amazing job. My dress had a lot of layers, a lot of lace, and beading...definitely a challenge. The finished product was a perfect fit! This will absolutely be my go-to place now. I've already gone back to have a bridesmaid dress tailored as well. I like that they have a couple changing rooms with a great mirror set-up to do the pinning to make sure it's just how you want it.
