This automotive was referred to us by another customer who had a Toyota. At least a couple of incidences took place. I spoke with the owner, explained I had the bulbs for the headlights in hand though only needed a mechanic to swap out the bad for the good. When the vehicle was ready, he quoted the bill was over $225. dollars. I questioned why the cost was so high when I supplied the parts? He asked me to hang on the phone, when he returned, he said the bill had been adjusted. (Left me with a queasy feeling) My Toyota vehicle failed, talked to HT owner and vehicle was towed to Hilltop. Called to check on status of vehicle over a few days. Owner said, "they didn't have the time" and "it wouldn't be for two weeks till they could look at it", in which we waited. After two weeks the owner stated, "I would need to have it towed to a Toyota dealership as they were unable to fix it there." The owner then stated that they serviced American made vehicles. read more

Dishonest business. I called them with an electrical issue for my truck. I knew what the issue was and explained in detail. They confirmed they could do the repair. After dropping off the truck, they called and said "turns out we cannot complete the repair and you will need to go to the dealership." They then charged me $200 to get my truck back despite doing no work and only confirming the issue I already knew I had. The issue they said they could fix. They lied about their capabilities and then held my truck ransom until I paid. Avoid this business. read more

Check engine light came on in my RAM. After having another shop repair what they told me was wrong, the check engine light didn't resolve. The other shop said it would be another more extensive repair to fully resolve the issue. I went to Hilltop for a second opinion before replacing all the parts that were being suggested. Hilltop said the issue with my truck was common, and was often misdiagnosed. That was exactly what was happening in this situation. Hilltop did the work for about 1/3rd of the cost of the other shop, and it was resolved correctly the first time. I had been going to the other shop for years, and with multiple cars. I'll be switching my business to Hilltop. They were professional and a good value. All the repairs were explained to me before they started the work. read more

Where do I start? My old church - Clearview Foursquare holds what is called Single Mother's Car Care twice a year where the mom's cars are checked out and basic maintenance is done. Any emergent needs are paid for by the church. The church was beyond kind to pay for a brake job on my Mercedes. Prior to the brakes being done through Joe's shop (the church has him conduct their repairs on the mom's cars) my car was not making ANY noises...no squeaking, squealing, grinding...NOTHING. The day Joe did my brakes which he charged the church over $600 for (supposedly Mercedes brake pads and rotors, according to Joe) I noticed my rear brakes squealing in reverse. I brought my car back and he came out with one of my rotors and a pebble and said the pebble had gotten in there and warped the rotor. A tech at the Mercedes Benz dealership told me that wasn't possible. He also told me cheap brake pads make noises and they suspected cheap pads had been put on the car, not Mercedes. To my knowledge, the pads were replaced (I don't know if the church was charged for front and rear or just the rear) and I THOUGHT with the original Mercedes pads since that is what the church was charged for. I had no knowledge of new rotors being put in at all and still have no proof that they were...he has not provided me with the service records and I was under the impression that only pads were changed. I had to bring my car in a THIRD time shortly after because it had begun creaking and squeaking while driving slow through parking lots. I did not want to jump to conclusions and blame it on the brake job so I started researching and all of my research said the same thing - bad brakes. Joe told me that my calipers were causing the squeaking. Again, I called my tech at the MB dealership and he said "No, bad calipers do not cause your car to squeak while driving slow" As the noises related to my brakes multiplied and worsened each month, I finally contacted my church 11 months after Joe did the brakes and told them. I felt bad about even complaining about the job Joe had done because he supposedly only charged them for parts and no labor. I thought he was an honest mechanic doing a service to single mom's out of compassion. Joe guarantees his work for 18 months and 18,000 miles but there were problems with my brakes from the very first day he replaced them. Fast forward 19 months from when he last replaced my brakes and they have been squeaking, squealing, creaking, and grinding HORRIBLY. I took it in to the Mercedes Benz dealership and they said Mercedes parts were NOT in my car, all brake parts were after market. Yet Joe charged the church $600 for Mercedes parts. I just saw my left rear pad today and it was literally 100% metal surface with black scrape marks on it. VERY unsafe to drive! How could the brakes deteriorate that badly and that quickly (19 months) when I had driven it for years without the brakes being done prior to Joe working on them and they were nowhere near in this condition????? Today, I got my rear pads and rotors replaced with Mercedes parts for only $277 INCLUDING labor by a reputable shop specializing in Mercedes cars! $277 for the parts and labor and Joe charged my church $600 just for parts! I am so, so happy to report that my car is not making one, single noise...it is quiet; the brakes work great! Joe refused to accept responsibility for the botched job he did on my car and putting cheap parts in it. He tried to say that because my car is a 1999 that it is going to make noises. WRONG...as of this morning with my good quality brake job, my car is back to driving like a dream, QUIET as can be just as it was BEFORE Joe touched it. I also find it ironic that I had driven my car for 3-4 years before Joe replaced the brakes and never had issues with the brakes making any noises...the noises started the very day I drove off of his lot. He also has not sent me the service records relating to my car after I requested them twice. Very disappointed in the service, especially when he is a Christian. I would expect honesty coming from someone like that. I also don't appreciate him charging my church $600 for Mercedes parts when it is cheap parts that ultimately ended up on my car. He also has used OEM parts only on my all my cars which has allowed me to rest easy knowing that my family is safe when they are driving around town. If you answered yes to any of those questions, then you should look elsewhere. For those of you still reading, maybe you need some repair work to your car, truck, or SUV? Read on. Hilltop Automotive is located on Highway 9 between Clearview and Snohomish, so it's the only place I recommend taking your vehicle if you live north of Woodinville or are in the Bothell/Everett/Mill Creek/Snohomish/Monroe area. Their specialty seems to be with classic cars, SUVs, trucks, economy cars, and even Motor Homes. I wouldn't take my new Audi A3 there, but I do have my Dodge Durango and 1966 Plymouth (ooooooo barracuda!!) serviced there. They advertise their preferences to Ford Motorcraft, Jasper Engines and Transmissions, Good Year, and Dunlop Tires. They are a NAPA Prolink affiliate, which means that they can get any Napa part as fast as same day. This is very handy if you have a Classic American Car. Hilltop is a member of the ASA of Washington, an association of automotive service businesses dedicated to improving the automotive service industry and the success of its members. If you own a SUV, you should have it serviced here since Hilltop is an authorized installer of Gale Banks Engineering (manufacturer of power enhancement products for gasoline and diesel trucks, motor-homes, SUVs, and Jeeps). So what about the prices? Well, the one thing that we all need to realize is that automobiles are the devil. Unless you're willing to get a computer science degree to work on the new cars, or be resourceful enough to work on the old cars, you should budget at least $1k-3k per year for basic maintenance, no matter what you drive. The pricing is very standard, and they go by a basic flat chart/matrix rate for each item they repair. I recommend that you ALWAYS get a quote for parts, services, and labor before authorizing anyone to work on your car. Get it in writing, especially the first time you do business with a mechanic or shop. If they do satisfactory work, nuture the relationship, and work your way in to 10% discounts for repeat business. If they continue to do good work, bring a friend in and make sure they know you referred them. This almost always gaurantees that you will get price breaks on labor. Because of their relationships with parts dealers, there are warranties on many of the parts. This has saved me probably over $1,000 the past year. Be sure to ask for a discount on the labor associated with the warrantied part. When I break down up North, or just need a tune up, I take my vehicles to owners Scott and Debra Witherow. Scott is possibly the most patient, long-suffering, and customer friendly business owner in all of Snohomish County, and Hilltop Automotive is probably the most reliable auto shop I've done business with, which is why I have stuck with them for so long. read more

I found Hilltop via word of mouth via the NW Xterra Club. I took my 2005 Xterra, that I just bought, to have it thoroughly checked out. Joe was great. He didn't talk to me like I was a "girl" but actually someone who cared about my car and wanted to make sure there were no hidden issues. They're great guys and do honest quality work but the problem is when things hit the fan and you need an emergency repair I have NEVER had any luck getting help with those. They're usually booked out a few days and can't squeeze you in, therefore scrambling to find an honest quality mechanic to take over. I've had four different occasions from a window falling into the door to a busted oil cap causing a bad leak. Pretty minor stuff but still needs that immediate attention for driver safety and never any luck getting in. read more

We have been taking our Rav 4 and Ford Pickup here for several years, We have been very happy with Joe and his crew. I thought my starter was bad in the pickup and I towed it in - they found my battery was charged up enough to run everything but not enough to start the truck - they recharged the battery and charged me a minimal fee and all is great - They could have charged me for a new starter and fixed the battery and I never would have known. We dropped the Rav 4 in for a comlete tune up and they were out of the Toyota tranny fluid so when it came in they called us and we brought it back and again they charged a minimal amount since we had to return to get the work competed. read more

Hello. I'm new to Yelp, but think this is a great service. How many times do we ask for opinions before investing any time/money? I know I do! On to my Hilltop story; So I'm pretty frugal. Even so, when it comes to automotive, I do as much of my own work as possible as I actually enjoy it! I've got a 30 year old pick up that I am completely restoring. I hope to give it to my son to drive next year. It also happens to be my daily driver, and times are pretty tough, so wish me luck! I'd been to Hilltop a couple times over the years. Always very polite, very professional, and friendly folks! Super busy though, so be patient at the front desk! I was rebuilding the transmission, and the transfer case in the back yard of a friends house and (like many back yard projects go) realized that I needed equipment that was not available. Time was a huge factor as I needed the truck to get to work. So I had the socket, but no access to a compressor or air wrench. An air wrench was quite necessary to keep the job progressing forward. Game over? I remembered that Hilltop was close, and that it would take far less time for me to go visit them rather than drive around looking for a shop that would be willing to do a 5 minute job to help me out. Anyways, just like the couple times I'd been there in the past, all I had to do was drive up and request their help. I needed use of their air wrench to unlock a couple yolks. The job took less than 5 minutes, but as far as I'm concerned, it was worth a lot! Had Joe not been willing to help I'd have had a vehicle down a lot longer than necessary. When I tried to pay him he insisted otherwise. Typical Joe, in my experience. Bottom line, Joe is not going to make a lot of money from me, but a good, honest, trustworthy mechanic is worth their weight in gold. I had used this shop before, over a year ago but now there are new owners. I called a week ahead and found that I could not wait for an oil change as I had before. I had to drop of my diesel truck and leave it all day. I did so, telling them I wanted an oil change and I thought I might have a problem with a U joint going bad. The Chevy diesel truck has 109,000 miles on it. I called during the day and they had not gotten to my truck. Finally I got a call saying the oil had been changed but they could not find the source of the squeek. I drove there at 2:30 PM and was able to show the mechanic the sound by driving around their building - 3 minutes. The mechanic pulled it in the shop and within 5 minutes determined one U joint was bad. I was advised to replace both U joints, the parts would be about $68. I agreed because the parts charge seemed OK. Was not given a total estimate for the repair - shame on me. I had to leave the truck all night and all day again. I called during the next day off and on and was told that the parts from the parts shop were the wrong ones. The correct ones were delivered on the 3rd try. I picked truck up after hours but I had been told over the phone that the cost for the diesel oil change was $101, $56 for parts. I assume the $45 for labor for the oil change is their hourly rate though I did not ask. To my surprise the 2 U joints cost $276, $207 for labor. Having done U joint replacement before I was shocked at the cost and told them so. I paid them but I will not return. I feel it took to long to complete the service and the service that was done was over priced. Shame on me for not asking for an estimate first. read more
