This is now my go to Puerto Rican spot. FYI when you first arrive it's directly upstairs. The first floor is a separate bar. I was clearly the last to find out about this hidden gem bc it was packed. First of all, I would like to say that this was my first time dining in here after having wanted to come into Qui Qui for quite some time, and I have to say, they did not disappoint!! The staff was wonderful, the space is small but cozy, and the food was beyond amazing. I would recommend coming to Qui Qui to anyone and everyone! However, after reading some of the most recent reviews, I feel the need to add this as well. There is a negative review from Cucopescuezo B. which I feel the need to address, as I was actually there at a table next to them that day. His recount of the event in question is wildly different than what I and my companion witnessed. This man was aggressive, entitled, and condescending from the beginning. He wanted to not substitute, but rather have the kitchen staff combine TWO SEPARATE DISHES into one. His wife DID NOT have an allergy; they just wanted the staff at Qui Qui to add something from one completely separate dish onto another, when it CLEARLY states on the menu that there are no substitutions. He was not kind, and was bullying and condescending toward server, who still very gently explained to the couple about their no substitutions policy (in a far nicer way than I would ever be). The General Manager came over and very politely, yet firmly, reiterated the same thing. This man then continued to argue with him about what they wanted, even though it had now been explained very kindly twice to him that this was not allowed. He was even given then option of just ordering both dishes so that they could do with them whatever they wished at the table, and he refused, even though he insisted that he would pay more money for them to do it. The GM offered to buy them a round of drinks on the house, but was still firm about the no substitutions. This man COULD NOT be placated. He even looked at me trying to get validation, and I said, in no uncertain terms, that he SHOULD NOT look to me to back him up in his horrible efforts to shame the staff because I felt he was completely in the wrong. He would not let up about the situation and called the GM back again to argue with him some more. It was actually pretty sad and super pathetic that this incredibly entitled gentleman could not accept that he was not going to get his way. The Chef of Qui Qui then came out and tried to once again explain why the establishment has this policy of no substitutions, and this guest then resorts to insulting them both. It was unreal. He continued to look to me several times to back him up, and I continued to tell him I felt he was in the wrong. They eventually left. But not before continuing to be combative and awful. I have to say in all honesty, the GM and Chef handled the situation with grace and incredible restraint, because if it had been me? I would have asked him to leave waaaaaay before that. He was 100% effecting the dining experience of other guests around them, and they were seriously given no other choice then to ask this couple to leave. In a nutshell, the food is beyond amazing, the cocktails are incredible, the staff is superb, and I will definitely be back!! 10/10, 5 stars, would DEFINITELY recommend! A new Puerto Rican popup, what's not to love? If they truly are a pop up and aren't staying permanently, I say hurry to try them because it was delicious. They occupy the second floor of The Passenger. Walk right up to find great photos and travel posters on the walls and a bright yellow and blue paint job reminiscient of the brightly colored facades of Old San Juan. The star of the show for us was the mofongo, a super garlicky mashed plantain delight. They offer it with a variety of different meats, including shrimp, but we went with the chicken. It was a good choice because the chicken was amazing. Crispy bite sized pieces of goodness with a side serving of mayoketchup. The cocktail game is too notch, too. The el yunque old fashioned was expert level, a great rum old fashioned variation that I greatly enjoyed. My wife went with the coquito, also top notch. Coquito is usually a holiday drink, but it's refreshing and delicious any time of year, so why not? We loved it. Reservations likely required if you visit on a weekend. They get five stars for food, drink, and service, but they also deserve bonus points for the tshirt on the wall that says, "you're a bad mofongo." read more

I was so happy to learn about Qui Qui as there is a dearth of great Latin Caribbean food in DC. Los Hermanos is okay for cheap and decent quality Dominican food, but Qui Qui brings those flavor and quality to the next level. As a New Yorker, I know my way around some empanadas and pernil, so I was please to bite into one of the best beef pastelitos (empanadas) I've had in my life and succulent roast pork. Everything I tried was great, and the service was amazing. Everything was a bit pricey for someone accustomed to the $7 rotisserie chicken, rice and beans combos back in the BX, but it was worth it if means their staff can get living wages and I get to experience these comforting flavors more often. read more

So I went to PR a few years ago and found the food to be grossly underwhelming, but I felt like this would be the place for me to really experience great PR food for my birthday. Thankfully I didn't read these bad reviews before I went - because my experience was nothing described -- I heard about Qui Qui DC through a Restaurant Week site. My fiancé and I took the metro to the Shaw-Howard Univ. stop and was a 5-min walk to the restaurant. It sits above The Passenger bar (no association w/one another - but they do partner to help with table overflow in some cases). Walking up the stairs you can feel the pride of being PR and the music playing was lively. (Oh yeah, they were playing some Bad Bunny ) We were greeted by Max and seated near a window. We ordered two Parchita's (SO GOOD!), the beef empanadas, mofongo con camarones & carne frita, arroz con gandules, and Maduros everything was perfection!! Their housemade aji sauce was so amazing, I had to put it on everything! We ended up getting the Budin de Pan for dessert (sorry no picture - trust me you'll love it) and the rum soaked raisins were delicious. With everything we ate it didn't feel heavy on the stomach. We really appreciated Max's hospitality and the conversations about the restaurants history. It was refreshing to know the chef was Puerto Rican and Mexican descent and his food was inspired by both ethnicities. My fiancé is PR and I'm Mexican. We have never been able to find a restaurant that suited both of our ethnicities. Normally you would see PR&Cuban or Mexican&Salvadorian. Some tips: DEF make a reservation, especially for Fri/Sat/Sun. We got lucky not having to reserve (Thurs.) because it was slow. The restaurant has limited seating but I personally love an intimate setting. Their hours for Thurs are 5-8pm, but they stop taking people at 730pm - in respect of their staffs hours. There is an automatic 20% service charge when in-dining. But it's all in great faith to the staff, add-on tips are appreciated Overall, this place was on point with amazing service, food, and ambience. Delicious vegan spicy green curry, but missing some crucial ingredients. As Qui Qui is new (started in Feb), I noticed that there were the new food truck on the block in Chinatown. I was a bit nervous when I didn't read any reviews, but glad that I tried it! As the noodle bowl tickled my curiosity, I got the vegan green curry with bok choy (you have a choice of green or red curry and protein). The green curry was pretty spicy, I can only imagine my mouth would be on fire from the red curry! Although the green curry is flavorful with a nice spicy kick, I wish it was a bit thicker and came with tofu and more veggies. Although the bok choy was great, I was disappointed with the other veggies - the pickled onion, peanuts, and fried garlic didn't blend well with the curry. I would preferred a different selection of veggies that would have better elevated the flavor of the curry like carrots, broccoli, cabbage, and mushrooms. The vermicelli noodles were really soggy and disappointing. They weren't chewy. I wish brown rice was available and had the option. Given that the meal was $13 without any sides (dumplings would be nice!), even the delicious curry couldn't compensate for the soggy noodles and odd blend of veggies. The meal was lackluster without rice, tofu, and missing some key veggies. Fun to try, but would probably will walk past it next time. read more

I shared the sorullitos, which were my favorite thing - flavorful and perfectly crispy. I then had the mofongo with carne frita, and it was my first time having it, so it just might not be my thing, but the plantain seemed pretty dry and dense, and while some of the meat was tender, some was a bit over cooked.
