Steak with an apple & onion salad inwould kill for

I will be as succinct as I can be: I love - love, love, love, love - this place. Everything about it was right up my alley: farm-to-table, seasonally-appropriate food. Chefs were fun as hell and were clearly passionate about what they made. You could tell every dish had a chefs personal flair to it. On top of that, this place feels like eating at a family gathering. Would give 6 stars if I could.

We went to R Kitchen for dinner with friends as part of my birthday celebration. To make reservations, you have to text a number on their website. They have 2 seatings: a 6pm dinner and an 8pm dinner. A total of 13 people were part of our dinner cohort. We waited outside until two chefs invited us in (Lee and Patrick). It is very important to note that this is a KITCHEN, and not a restaurant. You are signing up for a 5 course tasting menu of which you have zero control. The chefs also blast whatever music they like. You will also be expected to keep the same silverware throughout. That being said, we had an awesome experience. For us: first course was a white bean and mushroom soup, second course was a Napa slaw, third course was a pea and mushroom gnocchi rendered in bacon fat, fourth course was a mashed cream of corn with steak and arugula, and the final course was a berry cobbler with vanilla ice cream on top. We loved the element of surprise and every dish. Of note, if you have dietary restrictions, this may not be the place for you because they have limited capacity for substitutions. For example, our friend is a gluten intolerant pescatarian and received multiple courses of mushrooms. We wish more could have been offered to our friend given the price and advanced notice about his dietary needs--I am deducting a star purely for this reason. The wine selections are also nice, though limited due to availability. The rioja wine we had (bottle pictured) was one of the best we've ever tried! That being said, we would come here again! the cost for each person's experience (without tax, tip, and wine costs) was $70.

Alex and Lee absolutely made our night. We were out celebrating our friends birthday and we had more fun than we knew what to do with. I've been to R Kitchen many time but this time, at the down town location, was such a pleasure. Thank you for the experience! We will be back.

Nothing else like it. Fantastic experience with a 5 course meals prepared in front of you with local fresh foods. The chefs are fantastic and entertaining while cooking up an amazing meal. Every day changes as far as the menu. Definitely going back over and over.

Wow what a uniquely special experience from R Kitchen! A wonderful treat for foodies to partake in a surprise range of dishes. I surprised my boyfriend for his birthday dinner by making a reservation a few weeks out through texting the number on the website. They offer 6pm and 8pm time slots at their downtown and West Ashley location. They cater the menu according to what's in season and availability of produce, however, they're mindful of food allergies and dietary needs - just mention it in the text when it comes to reservations. Overall loved the nutritious meal, the flow of the evening, how they make birthday folks feel special, the kitchen setup. Great experience!

You have to have some guts and maybe "balls" You just don't know what you will get The place is super small and incredibly underinvested AND YES YOU HAVE TO SUCK IT UP AND DO IT (And no don't ask the Chef to change the music - it is their playlist and that is that) If you can sit at the counter I would do it Maybe chefs from The Bear Super interesting Maybe intriguing Jump in for a party of flavors and fun

I mean... this place take 10/10 to the next level. An intimate setting with 2 top tier chefs who presented a 5 course meal in an unassuming yet extremely charming (think season 1 of The Bear) setting. The menu (which they come up with daily!) was so delectable! Every single bite was so perfectly prepared and well thought out and (most importantly) sooo yummy and mouth watering! Genuinely cannot wait to come back and this place will be at the top of my Charleston recs going forward

This was one of the best dining experiences I have ever had. Not only was the food amazing, but the ambience and chefs were fantastic! The first course was a delicious salad with a sesame Caesar dressing and a dehydrated tomato. The second course was an amazing roasted pumpkin and potato soup topped with goat cheese. The third was shredded chicken and gnocchi mixed with a red and yellow curry (so yum). The fourth was a butchers cut steak with an onion purée (my fav) and green beans. Finally, we finished with a strawberry sorbet with cream. So delicious. What really made the experience amazing was the chefs. Taylor, Kevin, and David were fantastic and we will be coming back to see them next time we are in Charleston. Thank you for a good time!

The gratin was out of this world!

The food was amazing! Each chef is engaging, why would you want to change the music, fun eclectic mix of songs. I will for sure be back!

Do they charge a fixed rate per person? If so, how much is it?

It's now 70 dollars plus alcohol plus tip. We love every minute of it.

How do I get in touch with this restaurant? I've called and called to try to make a reservation. The phone is either busy or no one picks up. And, I can't find an email.

There was a button on Yelp make reservation and they called us back and we made reservations 2 months out

How do you book with them? I've tried calling them a couple of times and it's always busy and really wanted to go with my hubby tomorrow :(

They book weeks in advance. No way for tomorrow. Sorry

The food looks amazing! I'm worried that I won't be able to sample all the amazing dishes for the night (due to gastric surgery) are we allowed to take what we don't finish home?

Should I sit outside at the downtown location or inside at the chef's counter at the West Ashley location? Those are my two choices.

Definitely inside at Chef's counter. It is quite an experience! :)

Would this place accommodate a large group?

Yes, but I would definitely call in advance. We had a group of twenty one night during a convention and called about an hour before on a week night. I have also been there when there where wedding rehearsal dinners with big groups.

    Says CLOSED 6-11 pm?

It says "Closed Now" because they don't open until 6PM. I think you're just misreading it. They are open from 6PM to 11PM. If you'd like to speak to anyone there though I would suggest calling during the day because once they start service, they are… Read more

I got the almond sour (delicious) and my friends were pleasantly surprised they serve decaffeinated espresso martinis. My sister got a spritz, which she also enjoyed. I was also touched that the culinary team was kind enough to sign a birthday card for me. Our table also received complimentary cacio e pepe popcorn to snack on--yum! For appetizers, we got the tuna tar tar (Crudo di Tonno), the strawberry caprese salad, and some shrimp--all so delicious, that they FLEW off the plate! For mains, I got the Rotolo al Forno, which was VERY tasty. My friends got the chicken milanese, the Sorelle spaghetti, and the sworfish. For side dishes, we also got the meatball with polenta and some potatoes. For dessert, I got a complimentary birthday cannoli with a candle and the Limone (a berry and cream-filled dessert in the form of a lemon!) What. A. Meal!!! The food and the locale are just stunning. But of course, not cheap. As a whole, we paid a whopping $399.75 without tip! Was it worth it for a feast of glamour? I'd say so--but definitely not an every day treat unless you have the budget! Also, Lucy was our server and was exceptionally sweet and patient!

It was solid but not something to write home about (or on Yelp about) - corn muffins - 5*5, i'm pretty sure the corn muffins came as the "bread" for the table and they were so yummy! The dining room is beautiful, and the ambiance is excellent. Unfortunately, the service did not match the quality level or price point of the restaurant. When entrées range from $65-$70 for fish, $80+ for steaks, and side dishes approach $14 or more, guests reasonably expect an elevated and attentive dining experience. Throughout the evening, our server seemed rushed and disengaged. Despite our efforts to be friendly and conversational, interactions felt brief and transactional. A drink order was delivered incorrectly, and rather than improving as the meal progressed, the service became increasingly impersonal. We never felt particularly welcomed or valued as guests. A special night out with a $300-$400 check should feel memorable for the right reasons. While the food and atmosphere were good, the overall experience fell short of what we have come to expect from restaurants operating in this category and at this price level. We are glad we gave it a try, but in the future we'll likely choose other Charleston-area restaurants that deliver a more polished and hospitality-focused experience when entertaining family and friends from out of town.

I wasn't exactly sure what to expect other than 8 courses and a 3 hour dining experience. Every detail had to be meticulously labored over. From the named place cards with your menu for the evening tucked inside sealed by a wax stamp (very nice touch) to the hand crafted mocktails (we went non alcoholic) there was not a single detail left out. Dinner started promptly at 7 and prior to every dish the chef came out of the kitchen and explained what is in the dish, where the ingredients were sourced from, how they were cooked and plated. Followed by the sommelier explaining the wine pairing, the region the grapes were grown in, what to expect while tasting the wine, and why it pairs nicely with the dish. Honeysuckle rose also catered to my food allergy and substituted my dish with something exceptional while my wife had what was initially planned (the quail). We have been to other multi course restaurants only to feel rushed so they could get another table opened. With Honeysuckle Rose everything is timed, we all get our plates at the same time, and the experience finishes at the same time. The evening closed out with the staff talking about how grateful they are of eachother and for all of their guests. This is a very quaint place, seating only about 20 people and it is only 1 service per night. The setting is very intimate and the music choice playing in the background was given much thought, very tasteful and appropriate. This is also a prepurchase meal and gratuity is included, I offered additional gratuity and was politely refused. There was not a single plate of food or drink that we did not thoroughly enjoy. Quite honestly the $500 price tag on this dinner was an easy price to pay for all you get. We got the chef's experience (seating at the bar top overlooking the kitchen). We were able to interact with chef River And chef Sky. I would strongly suggest getting the chef's experience, it's the same price wether sitting in the dining room or at the bar area (only 4seats). If you're looking for an exceptional dining experience, where every detail has been meticulously dialed in, and the food is second to none I would suggest honeysuckle rose. A couple of days before our reservation, we received a confirmation call from James--but not the typical kind. He asked thoughtful, personal questions: who my guest would be, our water preferences (yes, really), allergies, absolute no-go foods, and even a song that held meaning to us. At that point, our curiosity was fully piqued. When we arrived, the space immediately stands out. It's very dark--blacked-out windows, black walls, black ceiling--and it's all completely intentional. Before the meal began, Kelleanne explained that the goal is to create an intimate dinner party atmosphere, where you forget the outside world and fully immerse yourself in the experience. And it works. It really works. At your seat, you're given what feels like an invitation--that's your menu for the evening. Each course is introduced by chef River and sommelier Mary Kate, adding a personal and thoughtful touch to every dish. I won't go course-by-course (we'd be here all night), but just know: every single one was worthy of praise. Chef River is absolutely crushing it. We were lucky enough to sit at the chef's counter, which I highly recommend if you can swing it. Watching chefs River, Ryan, and Trae work was like witnessing a perfectly choreographed performance. After each course, every surface was meticulously cleaned--counters wiped, stoves reset--everything returned to pristine condition before the next dish began. It was as impressive as the food itself. And it doesn't stop there. You notice Cody in the back, carefully polishing each glass and plate to perfection. Every single person on the team is fully invested in making this an extraordinary experience--and that's exactly what it is. What really sets this place apart is the attention to detail and the personal touches. Maybe you get an extra bite, a meaningful story from Mary Kate, or a surprise dessert to celebrate something special. There's an element of the unexpected that makes the evening feel uniquely yours. We left completely blown away. Not just by the food, but by the people. Kelleanne and Ryan are the kind of individuals you genuinely enjoy watching succeed--they bring something special to the entire experience. And a quick note for those who notice the details (like I do): even the bathroom is stunning--beautifully designed and just as intentional as everything else in the space. If you're looking for something truly different, immersive, and unforgettable--this is it. Don't think twice. Book the reservation. We'll absolutely be back, and we're already looking forward to exploring their other concepts.
