Moving to a new city has many upsides but also some drawbacks: one of the main ones is finding a reliable, no-nonsense mechanic that doesn't overcharge you or take advantage of your lack of expertise. I needed to get a regular oil change and a general check-up of my car and driving all the way down to Costa Mesa was not a feasible option. This is where Raymond comes in. He came highly recommended from a friend and truly he met my expectations. He was attentive and upfront from the beginning, stuck to what I requested of him, and aby extra services, he thoroughly explained beforehand and did clarify that they were optional and did not need immediate attention. Because of his honesty and willingness to work with me, I went ahead and got the extra fixes required. He even found a tiny noise that had been bothering me for a while that no one else had been able to spot. His prices were also more than reasonable. I was referred by a friend because of the friendly and honest service from R1 Motors. After contacting R1, I was given an estimated price over the phone for transmission fluid replacement. The price is competitive with other places and decided to go with R1. I was greeted by Raymond and immediately moved by car into his shop. Asked me to wait in his office and it took about an hour for him to finish. He also took my car around the neighborhood to make sure the car was running smoothly. My friend referred me to Raymond and I have been coming to him for over 16 years on all my car needs. Raymond is someone I can trust my car with and would honestly tell me what needs to be done or not. When my car broke down, I had take it to the nearest location off on Del Mar. They told me it would've cost me over $1000 to change out a piece in my car while Raymond said it was only a $100 to just clean something. It is terrifying to see how other mechanics will try to advantage of you. I'm glad I waited and got a second opinion from Raymond. Raymond gets the work done in a timely manner. I'm glad I can text him to schedule an appointment as well as any questions I may have. I still come out to him even though I moved out in Upland area. I usually pay him with cash or check. Overcharge & dishonesty After Raymond changed the catalytic converters of my 2007 Honda Pilot in 2019, I had the same problems of getting them smog check ready since. After I took my frustration to the Bureau of Automotive Repair, their staff Victor helped me discover that Raymond got the converters from Goudy Honda at 25% discount without tax, but he still charged me for the full or listing prices plus tax anyway. He damaged my radiator in the process, & had me pay for it. I took my car to the dealer lately who updated the software for me, & my car passed the smog check. Raymond failed to advise me to do so in 2019, which may have been all that was needed. Instead, he took my car through the expensive route to enrich himself. In separate incidents, Raymond called me a couple of times if I wanted to replace my front brake pads while l left my car in his shop for fixing something else. I said yes, go ahead because I thought he wanted to keep my car in top shape at that time. Shortly after the last brake work, my brakes were making squeaking noises. I found out that my small rear brake pads (total 4 pieces) were worn down to the metal. I realized that Raymond just wanted to collect more easy money from me when he offered to do the brake work for me, & he didn't bother to take the covers off to check my rear brake pads at all. He offered to adjust the valves of my engine for $500 when my car coded for misfiring. I didn't have him do it as I realized that he may charge me for doing little or even nothing. The code didn't reappear after it was erased without any repair being done for it. You'll be better off to take your car elsewhere. (Victor was quick & responsive in his handling of my complaint though he failed to help me recover any of the overcharges.) read more

Took my 2012 4Runner Trail wit 95k miles to R1 for fluid change (oil, coolant, ATF, brake). Dropped off late Thur afternoon and was ready next day as agreed. Drove around 50 miles that evening and noticed improvement on braking (pedal more firm), and shifting seem smoother. Yes it's not a flush, just a drain and top off of the ATF, and it's fine. I plan to do the same again in 20k miles to circulate and to gradually replace the ATF. Raymond a nice and honest, and price is fair. I used to fix my own cars. Because I dont trust other people with my cars. Ever since I started taking my cars to R1, I stopped getting my hands dirty. Best place to take your car fix in the San Gabriel Valley. Raymond is a great technician. Excellent work ethics, very knowledgeable, good at troubleshooting car problems. Great place to go. Raymond is a great mechanic. I went to and called probably 35 mechanic shops in the Alhambra/Pasadena area for my Prius which had a check engine light that would turn on and off. Many shops wouldn't read the error codes for free, others wouldn't give me a quote unless they did an inspection. A few places in Pasadena quoted me $100 just for a basic inspection of what the problem was. I went to R1 Motor and Raymond read me the codes for free, and actually popped open the hood and took a look to make sure I wouldn't break down. He was the only mechanic that I visited out of the thirty shops that put a little more effort and time looking at the problem my car was having. All at no charge. I eventually returned to have my car repaired by him because I felt most comfortable going to a mechanic that actually took a more thorough look at the car with an affordable rate, especially in comparison to other shops. Raymond is amazing. I ran over a piece of a drive shaft on the highway and bent a lot of parts underneath my BMW 135i, including the subframe. The dealer wanted a ton of money to fix it. I took it to my go-to shop, All-Car Specialists. But All-Car wanted MORE than the dealer!! I yelped and found R1 Motor. Raymond quoted me 1/3 of the dealer's cost! ONE-THIRD! Not only that, Raymond walked me through the whole process in detail. He texted me pictures of everything he did in real time. Terrific customer service. Now here's the final great part of my experience. After a ton of work on the front end, the only thing left to do was get an alignment(Raymond doesn't do alignment). When I took it to get an alignment, the front end was only .5 degrees out on left toe! Raymond was meticulous in his work. Personally speaking, one of the most difficult thing I've found in life is finding an honest, quality and knowledgeable auto mechanic. I'm happy and relieved to finally say I've now found one in Raymond at R1. The door to my 98 Accord was broken and would not open. I brought it two places highly reviewed on yelp in Santa Monica (where I live) and Studio City (where I work). Both places described how extremely difficult the job would be (which is true) and how they have to take out the driver seat, spend a couple of days and they can get me a good deal with a car rental company down the street. It was by dumb luck that I brought my car to Raymond as I thought I was bringing it to a referral from my sister. Raymond fixed the door in less than a day without dismantling my seat and whatever else the other mechanics said they would need to do. I think most auto mechanics are good people. Many of them try hard sell you their work by charming you and calling you their "friend" when all you want is someone who will fix your call without cheating you. Raymond comes off as honest and straight-forward which is not what I usually experience. Not only did he fix my door, he was able to accurately diagnose other potential issues with my car and then articulate where the fixes would be. My current mechanic just tells me what's wrong and then the bill. Raymond is out of the way for me but having faith in someone who works on a huge machinery that I use everyday, that my life depends on, is paramount. Raymond does great work. He knows his stuff and does his job thoroughly. I bought a set of used springs for my Evo X and put them on myself but noticed they were sitting too low. So I bought a brand new set of the same springs and had Raymond install them for me since I didn't want to go through the install again by myself. He was a bit confused at first on why I bought the same exact springs but after we took the used set off, it was clear what the problem was. I knew the springs weren't supposed to sit so low. Sitting the springs side by side it was obvious the previous owner had cut about 2-3 coils and didn't even bother telling me when I bought it.. Shady.. Raymond and I were talking and laughing about the situation. If you have any questions, he has the answers. He is an honest mechanic and won't try to rip you off. He was able to get me in and out of the shop the same day I called him. I was at his shop for about 5 hours because he had another customer in front of me, but I didn't even mind because time flew by from just talking to him about cars and getting to know him. Great service. I just recently started taking my car to Ray. He first did my rear brakes for about $150 (parts and labor included!!) I've gotten quotes from other places and his was the cheapest. The last time I took my car in was for my rear shocks! I had another place quote me for $390, for "the cheapest parts" and labor. He charged me $270 for good parts and labor included! Best part is he doesn't take too long. I've taken my car on Fridays around 2:00 and he is finished around 5:00. But you do have to schedule an appointment. read more
