After living in California for over 10 years, I'd kind of gotten used to eating massive, thick burritos filled with meat, carbs, beans and delicious crema. Since I was flying out of El Paso, I thought I'd stop by Rafa's, which came highly recommended, to try a more traditional kind of burrito. As we pulled into the parking lot, we found it almost completely full. Only one spot remained, which one of the parking attendants pointed out. This was at 11AM, and the restaurant was pretty much completely packed, and there were a number of people waiting for takeout orders. Our food arrived pretty quickly in spite of how busy everything seemed - it took only around 10 minutes. Chicharrones Burrito, Grandes ($7.75) - Not what I expected. I thought it would be crispy chicharrones with meat and skin, but this turned out to be only skins stewed in a chile sauce. Super gelatinous and mushy with a medium spice spice due to the chiles. They also slather on some refried beans. I guess this is more of an acquired taste because the entire thing just felt like I was eating mush. This grande size was quite massive lengthwise, though. I'd say it was approximately 15-16 in long and 3 in across at the widest. In retrospect, I would have gotten the Verde or Colorado - I was just afraid that the tortilla would get soggy since I wanted to eat it while at the airport/in the plane. I'll refrain from including this burrito in my ratings. Carne Asada Burrito, Chico ($6.25) - This was actually on the no hay board, but I placed my order before seeing it and I guess they still had enough for one burrito. The carne asada was okay quality. It was sliced larger than normal and grilled well with some crisp. There was some gristle and fat on some pieces and some pieces were so gristly they were impossible to chew. The burrito comes with a small amount of avocado, lettuce, refried beans, and cheese. The ingredients other than the meat aren't distributed very well, so I had a lot of bites of tortilla and meat only. The interior is extremely dry and requires salsa to moisten things up. The chico is around 10 in long, so something like 2/3 the size of the grande. Carnitas Burrito, Chico ($6.25) - This burrito included larger chunks of pork that weren't really shredded but was still quite juicy. It had the exact same issues as the carne asada burrito, but overall was better because the meat was better. The tortillas in each burrito were very fresh. They are about three times the thickness of a standard commercial tortilla and very bready as a result. Since these traditional burritos are only folded over, there are some sections where you are eating the thickness of four tortillas. It gets to be a bit too much at times. Call me a gringo, but I think I just don't like this more traditional type of burrito. I'd take a California or Mission-style burrito over this any day. Still, you can't beat the pricing at Rafa's. You definitely get your money's worth. Just because it's not my cup of tea doesn't mean it won't be yours. Give it a try and see for yourself.

My ranch hand friend Sam, who drove in from Horizon City, was super mad when he walked into my apartment over on Yandell St. "They have no hay available at Rafa's Burritos and it's chaffin my hide!" "What?" I curiously asked since Rafa's is known for it's ridiculously good and hefty burritos. "That's what it says every time I go and I'm rootin and tootin getting really tired of them never having hay available." We got into his F350 and rumbled our way to Montana & Cotton where his diesel guzzlin large truck had trouble looking for a parking space. The parking is cramped and the self appointed parking lot attendant may help you find a spot for a small fee but if you drive a smaller car you can fit in where you get in. Rafa's certainly retains its old school charm with cramped spaces and lines that fill in the gaps between tables but that's expected and a reminder of both the popularity and longevity of the place; aesthetics fall to the wayside in favor of great flavor and consistent quality. "Well, I don't see the sign but I reckon it'll be up there; let's wrangle ourselves a few burritos while we're here and I'll ask them about the hay when we leave." We ordered the Chile Colorado, Chile Relleno, the Machaca, Papas ala Mexicana, and Asada de Puerco. The last burrito was the first, and it was truly memorable. The tender pork cuts smothered in the chile rojo was buoyed by a perfect flour tortilla with the right amount of bounce and texture hit my tastebuds with knockout combo of taste and feel. "This Aysaduh de Puerko is whoa! and when I say whoa, I mean whoa!" I have no idea what that means but the flavor was amazing. The Chile Colorado was equally impressive, with the chicharron fighting it's way through the tortilla but to no avail; the tortilla retained it's structure but wasn't stiff or rubbery. And even though I don't like Machaca, this one really did a great job of combing all the "Rayfa could make a pretty penny selling tortillas alone I reckon!" The Papas ala Mexicana were good; the papas were cooked well throughout. The burrito had a good flavor and the papa absorbed that flavor as well. A couple of the potato chunks felt a bit undercooked but nothing terrible and I would. The Chile Relleno looked great and I was ready for a great explosion of flavor but it fell flat; the chile nor the queso had any character and left a little something to be desired. "That last boo-roh was all hat and no cattle I tell ya!" As we got up, getting some of that limonada to go, Sam bust out of his seat and pointed at the sign. "THERE! THERE! THERE IT IS! I TOLD YOU, THEY NEVER HAVE HAY AVAILBLE!" The signage indeed said NO HAY. "Sam, you galoot, that says NO HAY in Spanish- that means "There is no-" and then they list the burritos that are no longer available since they only make a certain amount. You haven't seen anything because you've been here before the lunch rush hour. You should settle down man, quit jumping to conclusions..." "I got too much tumbleweed in my blood to settle down." "What does that even mean?" "I'm not sure myself." I paid the bill which came out to only about 50 bucks; the burritos, as you an see from the pictures, are huge. Not only is Rafa's delicious it's also price friendly and a great way to feed the entire family. We got into his 350 and his CD player cranked up and Nickelback started playing. "Seriously Sam?" "No Hay ocho CD amigo."

Rafa's has the largest burritos for no reason and I highly recommend it. No matter what you get, it's always great. Their breakfast tacos are bomb (I prefer with bacon). Their barbacoa is bomb. Everything is just so good and you get so much. Pro tip is to call ahead because there is always a line. Even the parking lot always gets so full that they have someone outside at all times with a vest telling people where to park (honestly still not sure if it's legit or not but it definitely happens lol). Just go. You won't regret it.

Rafas Burritos, The Burritos are delicious but not the best. The place was crowded. Burritos are massive. I ended up getting two normal size burritos because I was told they were small but they were huge and they were not the large ones. The "guisado" was delicious, I ordered one green and one colorado. The tortilla is very thick and filling. Prices are just right. Aguas Frescas are synthetic not natural. Good Costumer Service and quick service but the place did not seemed the cleanest.

Took me two years, but finally made it to the iconic, correctly worshiped Rafas. I also got the last barbacoa of the day--and get this, it was only 11:30am. I felt bad about getting the last one until I took the first bite and then I just knew it was ordained for me! You stand in a long line, bunched up with other diners praying their choice doesn't get marked on the "no hay" bored. The service is frantic bc like 200 people want lunch at a 20 seat building, but the service still has pride for their product and they WANT you to be there and be happy. I expected to wait longer for our lunch and the genial server apologized and thanked us for our patience, but really, it wasn't that bad of a wait at all. We started off with homemade chips and a warm, spicy salsa. Not crazy spicy but enough to satisfy my jalepeño need. The salsa was sooo flavorful. Then, the barbacoa burrito. You'd think a two ingredient burrito would be flat, but you'd be wrong. (Hint: Some of the burritos come with avocado, lettuce, beans and cheese, but some don't. Trust the chef). I've had plenty of excellent homemade tortillas, but somehow this has Risen to the top of flour tortillas in my life. I couldn't figure out why it was better, but it just was. And the barbacoa just melted. The flavors, the texture! My wife got the frijoles y queso. Again, we've both had excellent beans (kiki's for instance!), but these were just different in a good way, in a way that said these beans can only be had right here on this corner. Looking forward to round two. Now to choose between the verde of the carnitas!

Was not impressed, ordered super large, the Carne Asada burrito. It was dry with minimal avocado, lettuce, or cheese. It was more bread and dry meat. Had a few bites and threw it away.

My sister-in-law's daughter recommended this place for lunch. Don't let the outside fool you. Great tasting food and portions! The picture is the GRANDE burrito, my brother-in-law ordered, chile Verde. He enjoyed it, but left most of the tortilla. I order Carne Asada tacos (4), full of meat, great taste. My son had the Carnitas tacos (4), he ate 2 and brought 2 home. My SIL had gorditas and they came with a good size bowl of caldo and rice. She enjoyed the caldo and the gorditas. Great place. We will be back.

Absolutely HUGE burritos. I think they were 1 foot and a half long! Homemade, thick tortillas are filled with your choice of fillings - anything from beef to chicken to pork. I usually like lengua but here it is pork, not beef. I expect verde to be pork, but here it is beef. The staff is very helpful and willing to share what is in each burrito - each type of meat comes with different ingredients (e.g., avocado, beans, cheese, etc.) - My beef verde had beans, potatoes, and of course a delicious green sauce coating my beef. One burrito is enough for 2 people (at least) but we all were gluttonous and got our own. Eric R. got the chicken mole. My m-i-l got the carne asada which had cheese, beans and avocado. Need to feed yourself for a week? The burritos are huge! You are charged adequately for them, however. There is seating indoors and it looked like they serve chips and salsa. I ordered to go, service was good and in a decent timing. read more

I love Rafas! I typically do not like to spend money on food I can make at home, but when I'm in EP, Rafas is a must! Their picadillo is amazing and their caldo de res. I haven't had one dish from Rafas that has disappointed. A must have in EP! read more

Absolutely one of the best recommendations that I've gotten when asking about comida corrida. Ty SSG GONZALEZ. What I ordered came with carne de res soup, frijoles, and tasty rice. Desubrada came next and it hit the spot all for $10. My wife was satisfied with the huge torta de Milanesa that she had to bring home because it was too much. Also for $10. Come to find out that their forearm length burritos can be half bfast and half lunch. Will definitely be back. And I'd be remiss if i didn't mention their friendly staff amidst these Covid times. Ty. You now have a loyal customer. Wish I would have taken pics. read more

I love Rafa's. Been going there for ages with my Dad we always had a good time. Today i ordered 2 burritos half Chile relleno half chicharrón. Got home with anticipation of eating my burrito only to find out ii was given the wrong order . I tried calling Rafa's 4x to correct my order n possibly go back And have it corrected .but to no aveo no answer i tried to eat the burrito but i don't like barbacoa at all. This hole-in-the-wall type place was BUMPIN on a Saturday afternoon! I had the huevo con papas y chorizo burrito. It was great! The machaca was not like traditional crispy machaca but instead it was more like shredded beef. Anyways, the chorizo won me over. read more

I don't enjoy these burritos. I will say that the tortillas taste homemade, the burritos are huge and most of the people that work there are so nice. However, I'm a picky eater and get grossed out biting into a burrito that has a lot of strange textures (fat or bone). I'd prefer they make a smaller burrito with more quality product, instead of lots of gooey fat and stuff (which has been the case in most of the burritos I've tried). No bueno! If you've got a big appetite and are on a budget, then this place may be for you but there are plenty of better places to find a burrito. read more

Was looking for a place for a good, quick breakfast while in El Paso to bowl Nationals. Was recommended to try this place. Ordered a couple of burritos and was amazed with the size--easily longer than my forearm!!! If I had known, I would have ordered only one :) Ended up sharing these with the rest of my teammates and we still had some leftover. The burritos themselves were excellent. I haven't been to this particular location. However there is a new location that has opened up on the east side of town just off of Montana and George Dieter. For starters the customer service was amazing. 11 o'clock in the morning and there were at least 15 people sitting at tables and three more waiting for to go orders. That's a good sign of good food. I ordered two burritos and to my surprise they were ginormous. Not to mention delicious. They have an amazing super smoky chipotle habanero salsa. Hot but amazingly delicious. Only been living in El Paso for a few months but I think I have found my burrito place. read more

These are HUGE burritos (they do sell small ones fyi). I ordered 3 burritos and 6 of us ate. Their prices are super affordable given the amount of food and they take debit cards. Apparently they also sell breakfast all day (winning!). However be mindful if you go during the lunch rush if you plan to eat there, we ordered to go. read more

Those are their top one sellers here and better than it's competitor Bonnie's Burritos. 1-10 Rafas Burritos are at a 9.5. They have friendly service such as employee Shannon. If you are looking for the biggest burritos in El Paso come to rafas's. They have the usual like verde, mole, deshebrada, colorado, picadillo, chicharron, asado de puerco and frijoles with queso. If you are feeling brave you can try lengua, buche, carnitas and barbacoa. The Mexican plates are good too. read more

This is a great spot for getting burritos for the a great price. The burritos are large enough for two people to eat, and they are not greasy or heavy but delicious. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a healthy meal for a great price. read more

After I ordered and paid for my food 20 minutes after waiting my mom got her food i asked what about my food. The cashier never got what ordered, she said she'll bring it right away. Horrible place. I used to buy burritos here once in a while but the last time I bought one it was a horrible experience. I ordered the burrito to go and went I went to the office and was eating my burrito I bit someone hard and to my surprise it was a big staple. I called to let them know and the lady who answered the phone she was like oh yeah I believe you. Im sorry so you want another burrito or your money? That was my last time eating there. Authentic Homemade Mexican food!!! From the chips, salsa, agua de limon, flour tortillas, food to the pan dulce. It's well worth the wait! I yelped it while driving from California to Austin and wasn't able to exit interstate 10 for 3 miles. I thought about yelping another place but decided to go back. The locals were pouring in and out which is always a good sign. Definitely will be stopping again every time I pass through El Paso. read more

I love the burritos and all the food, the only problem is that you have to get there early cuz the barbacoa always finishes early. I mean early like by 1pm, it's usually gone. And the small parking area in the front is almost always full, for all the right reasons. The flour tortillas are hand-made and have that "homemade" taste that everybody loves. The burritos are giant size and will fill you up with just one! read more

I'm going to start out by saying that the food at Rafa's is awesome! I love the monster burritos and all the other food they make there. However, this location on Montana is a dump! The parking lot and the inside of the restaurant are cramped. What upset me most about this restaurant is the limited menu and restrictions. They only serve one type of enchiladas on a certain day and flautas on another day whereas the location off of North Loop and Dodge serve everything on their menu everyday. I was annoyed by this nonsense at the Montana location and left. Never will I go to this location unless I only go for burritos. This location left me disappointed and pissed off! read more

Came into EP for vacation (yes, I said vacation) and stopped int Rafa's after being referred there by a friend. Hands down the best chile verde burrito I've ever had. My boyfriend had the Carne asada and barbacoa- good, but we both liked the chile verde best. Huge (at least 14 inches) of soft, pillowy homemade tortillas, spread with beans and meat....pure gastronomical heaven. Added bonus - ONLY $4.75 read more

I was driving through El Paso and was told to go here. I'm so glad I did. We got there about 9:30am and there was already a line so we had to wait about 15-20 but it was worth it. I got their huevo and chorizo breakfast burrito and it was huge! One burrito can keep you full all day, they're even larger then they look in the pictures. And it was good :) the tortilla was soft and it came with beans and cheese. Yum!! If I drive through El Paso again I'm definitely stopping here. Also, there horchata is really good too! read more

I was working at a medical clinic in El Paso today and the staff decided to bring lunch in They thought Rafas would be a good choice for someone from California. And Wow! Right on the money. Delicious homemade tortillas wrapped around fresh fillings make this a burrito lovers paradise. The prices are fair, the portions huge and the ingredients fresh. This is a new standard for burritos! I've been here multiple times and it becomes an instant favorite among my friends. The burritos are gigantic and the horchata is amazing. I think most of the burritos on the menu don't have cheese so I really can't comment on the cheese. A $5 burrito will feed two people. In my opinion, it's one the most authentic, cheap, and best places in town. Order up at the front, and then they'll bring it to your table. I've always seen it to be packed, and in my opinion, for good reason. read more

Had a hankering for a quick chile relleno burrito for lunch today. Since I was close I figured I'd pop in and grab a little bite. The massive behemoth I got back for my money was enough for an episode of Man vs Food. Had to have been at least 5 pounds or maybe 15. Whatever it was it was pure delight. You could probably feed a family of four with just one of these. Rafas doesn't get consistently named El Paso's best burrito for nothing. I think you can get any filling you'd want in a burrito - well maybe not liverwurst, but I didn't ask. You can also get caldos and plate lunches if you don't want a burrito. Shame on you if you don't though. read more

This is the best place for mexican food in el paso. Im from austin and this is legit. The salsa is nice and spicy but not to spicy. The chile colorado is the best hands down. Add beans and thats a wrap. I can die now a happy man. read more

USED to be the best rafas like 20 years ago maybe. Now it's just run by lazy incompetent people who can't comprehend simple orders. Several times coming here giving them the benefit of the doubt, time and time again I would be surprised with my order being incorrect, incomplete, or made with little to fewer ingredients. Truly an insult and disappointment to the traditional restaurant quality it once had many years ago. If you don't mind a drive I recommend you try one of the other locations on the west or east. Avoid this one till they get new competent help. read more

When she returned and sat down, a manager approached our table and loudly told her--in front of other diners--that "MEN cannot use the female restroom." My sister was mortified and humiliated by the public confrontation. The manager's tone and assumption were shocking and clearly discriminatory. We immediately got up and left without eating. This wasn't about enforcing any legitimate policy; it was rude, insensitive, and targeted. My adult sister is perfectly capable of reading the restroom signs herself--no one needed to police or shame her in such a way. The incident felt rooted in homophobia and transphobia from management. We will never return to this place, and we will actively discourage others--especially LGBTQ+ individuals and allies--from patronizing it. What should have been a joyful family milestone was ruined by bigotry. Avoid this establishment if you value respect and inclusivity.

Unfortunately, that loyalty came to an end after a recent experience that was both disappointing and unacceptable. My family and I chose this restaurant to celebrate a birthday. Every guest paid separately, and there were no issues during the evening itself. However, as the event concluded, multiple attendees, including family members and in-laws, overheard servers making derogatory comments about our party. Among the remarks were that we were "ungrateful," "cheap," and "broke," along with other inappropriate comments that no customer should ever have to hear. I brought the matter to the attention of ownership, hoping for a meaningful resolution. While I was told the employees had been reprimanded, the proposed remedy was a $25 gift card. After nearly 18 years of patronage, the response felt dismissive and only added insult to injury. What disappoints me most is not simply the behavior of the staff, but the lack of accountability and concern shown afterward. This was a place I once considered a reliable and welcoming destination for family gatherings and celebrations. Sadly, that trust has been lost. As a result, I will no longer be returning or recommending this establishment to friends, family, or colleagues. Respect for customers should be a fundamental part of any hospitality business, and in this case, that standard was not met.

I had just come down from a Tom Lea gallery event upstairs and the restaurant was packed. I figured it was a long shot, but they still found a way to seat me. Service stayed friendly even with the rush, which I always notice. The burger was easily one of the best I've had in El Paso. Clearly handcrafted, cooked right, super juicy, really flavorful. What impressed me most was the bun actually held everything together instead of falling apart halfway through like most gourmet burgers do. At about $20, it felt justified. One thing worth noting, especially if you're into spirits: they have one of the largest tequila and mezcal collections around. Definitely a destination spot if that's your thing. I tried their carajillo but found out they add Baileys, which made it sweeter than I usually prefer. Not bad at all, just more dessert-leaning than my taste. Live music from Jordan Taylor was happening that night too, which made the whole atmosphere feel elevated without being stuffy. Because that first visit stuck with me, I went back recently to try their lunch special with a friend. For $26 you get an appetizer, entrée, sides, guacamole, tostadas, and dessert. It's honestly a great way to try a range of dishes without committing to just one plate. One practical perk: they validate parking at the Plaza garage next door, which downtown absolutely needs more of.
