We had really attentive and enthusiastic customer service from the two young folks up front. I forgot people could look happy to be at work! The menu is so creative and so reasonably priced. I have tried to give this place multiple chances and at first it was a good place, but everytime I order something with carneasada in it I have to spit out the meat, it's either under cooked or the whole thing is just fat and gummy, it literally makes me nauseous. I was excited to try Rivas Taco Shop after seeing they have the Cali burrito on their menu. I was born and raised in SoCal so I've had plenty of Cali burritos in my lifetime and was happy to see a place in El Paso that offered it. The spot is big and clean. Plenty of tables for customers and it was decorated nicely. The girl taking our order was very friendly and helpful when I asked for their sizing of sides. My husband ordered the shrimp quesadilla, he has yet to try it so no comment on that as of yet. We decided to share the Cali burrito and the carne asada fries. I will say that the portions are a good size! Good enough for sharing. I ordered the Cali burrito with sour cream and the carne asada fries with no beans. My husband did state that he liked the burrito, which I agree it was pretty good. The fries were a letdown though. I think both my husband and I didn't care too much for them. The carne asada was a bit chewy, kind of made it difficult to eat. I will also add that we both got sides of sour cream and it tasted off to us. Very watery consistency and just didn't really taste like sour cream, not sure what it was but it kind of threw off my meal. Overall I'm not sure I would come back. We spent over $40 for our food and I personally don't feel the quality and taste of the food was worth it. But that's just my opinion. I will continue to search for a good Mexican spot in El Paso. Rivas was decent, but I wouldn't say I loved their food. I may just have high expectations though. read more

Horrible in many ways. Girl at register did not know what a Street Taco was. Ordered 3 received 2. Ordered a Carnitas Torta and my bad but did not check bag before leaving, but it was not there. I know this os not brain surgery but please do your job. You took my money, give me my food.. Taco was below average anyway so I guess I'm not missing much with the vacancy of the Torta. I've got an update about my all-time favorite Cali-style taco spot, Rivas Taco Shop. It got sold a little while back, and let me tell you, things have definitely changed and not for the better. The hot sauce that I used to buy and take home? Well, it's just not the same anymore. It has become super bland and watery. It used to have this amazing flavor, but now it's just missing that special kick. I actually had to add salt to give the dish some flavor, everything was so bland. The pico de gallo was weirdly sweet, I think they added too many onions. I asked if they recently changed chefs but everyone is the same so I'm not sure if they changed the recipes. I know they added new items like fried pickles and street tacos. I'm really bummed out about this. Rivas was my go-to place for people who wanted to try out some legit Cali-style tacos and burritos, and the hot sauce was a major part of that whole experience. This place has really friendly service and pretty great food! Their carnitas tacos were phenomenal would recommend getting that. The supreme fries were okay. The toppings were good but the fries were really soggy and just taste late great value fries so not my fave. The toppings were good though so maybe on rice or something it would be great. We also got the churros that were filled and they were very crunchy and delicious. The strawberry ones were better than the caramel ones in my opinion but both were great. The ambiance is chill and the people are nice. Would be great for a family lunch. Overall would recommend trying this place or using it as a family lunch or dinner spot. read more

Honestly, I couldn't believe I was able to pay $34 (including tax) for: One HUGE 1/2 pound California burrito A HUGE 1/2 pound carnitas burrito with a side of rice and refried beans 2 kids meals (bean/cheese burrito with fries) It is kind of out of the way from the center of El Paso, but service is fast (about 5 minutes). You can also call in your order ahead of time or even use the fun drive through window to extra speed. As a visitor from Chicago and in town for a few days, I asked a friend where I could get some good food. He was quick to answer, "Rivas on Zaragoza". I tried their steak and eggs burrito with hot sauce on the side. Their menu was intricate, but the cashier was incredibly helpful, walking me through it, answering all my questions, and even suggesting his favorite. I trusted his recommendation, and he was spot on. The inside of the restaurant was clean and spacious, reminiscent of a popular Baja Cali/Mexi Cali spot on the West Coast, but with a distinct EPT twist. I also ordered the Carne Asada Fries, which were better than expected--quite a feat since my expectations were already high. This place is fantastic for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You can swing by on Monday and Thursday nights to catch a game on their TVs, enjoy a draft beer, and savor some great food. Highly recommended! Check this place out. It is NOT traditional Juarez- style Mexican food as found in most restaurants in El Paso.... but for those of you willing to branch out, or those of you missing your California style burritos- this is the place!! All the dishes were huge. I didn't get any pics of our burritos (I guess we were too busy snarfing them down lol) but they were AMAZING! The carnitas had the best flavor and perfect charring on the edges. I was in heaven. They use super thin tortillas, Sonoran style. In my opinion, everything here was perfect. This Cali girl has to give credit where credit is due. Rivas came through with the SoCal flavors and fill! I've ordered to-go twice. First time was a California burrito, which was pretty good. Second time Carne Asada fries without beans. I'm used to the cheese being on top, but hey it was present and it was on point. Probably the closest thing I'll find around here that reminds us of good 'ol Daygo! Tried a few bites of my honey's tacos too and they were also good. We're staying at a hotel down the street and decided to Yelp to see what's good around this area. We were in mood for Mexican food so found Rivas and it has good reviews. We ordered the #4 and #5 (tostadas/enchiladas and taco/enchiladas), along with chips and salsa, medium drink. The food was good, decent. What I liked the most were the chips and salas. Chips was hot and crispy and salas has authentic flavor. Overall everything came out to little over $20 which wasn't bad. Would recommend for a quick bite. read more

So I've been going to Rivas Taco Shop for about two years. 2 years ago they were hands down a 5 start restaurant. The owner was working the front. Now his kids are working the front and they lack professionalism and are usually joking around with a line full of customers. The food 2 years ago was amazing. Now the food is lacking the quality it once had. The drinks are very expensive and don't match the quality. For a $5 aguas frescas you'd expect to get a large sized cup. But you get a medium sized cup. And the water tastes watered down and has a bad taste to it. The restaurant is pretty clean so I will give them that their ambiance is nice. It's pretty tidy for the most part. The lack of the manager has really caused the shop to go downhill. I do believe the restaurant can turn things around if they can improve their proportions and customer service. The young kids probably see customer service as a weird gesture but it is what it is when it comes down to a restaurant. read more

With all the good reviews this place had, I was expecting better and was pretty disappointed. I got the rolled tacos with cheese, bean and cheese burrito, and a churro. The rolled tacos were crispy which I liked but the meat inside was dry and flavorless. The bean and cheese burrito was okay. The beans were weird to me. Most bean burritos don't have the whole bean not mushed together like they typically are. It kind of made it unappetizing. The churros were good though. I wouldn't come here again and might think I'm better off going to a fast food chain especially with the price I paid. read more

This taco shop is self-described as a "California" style taco shop. For a California style taco place, it's very good. The service is excellent and the food is served fast, hot and delicious. I had the street tacos with barbacoa and alambre, they were good, but the barbacoa wasn't my favorite. It wasn't bad, but different than what I'm used to (California style?). I also took a Rivas burrito to go. It was "huge" and filled with a bunch of different ingredients. It was also good. If you like California style Mexican food, then this place is great, just don't go here expecting a local style (Juarez, El Paso, Las Cruces) of Mexican cuisine. read more

Ah man what can I really say about this place other than...well it was a tad underwhelming. We didn't eat there, we took the food home and although presentation is always hurt on the road I'd like to think our food arrived rather nicely. The Asada Fries although really good felt like something was missing (I ordered mine without avocado but I'm allergic so can't really change that) The Mexican Fries from Chinampa had their flavor a bit more balanced and dare I say had some more meat to them. These fries although good didn't exactly scratch the itch I had for some dope fries. The Rolled Tacos were surprisingly good, sadly since they are served without any sauce they do feel a tad dry after a few bites. The green salsa had no real flavor to it and the cheese was super gooey and melty, that in itself was the saving grace of these taquitos. My girl got the Surf and Turf burrito, although I know I shouldn't expect greatness in any Surf related thing here in El Paso they burrito looked as if though the tortilla wasn't even finished cooking before they decided to wrap up the stuff. The usual brown dots that you see on it were hardly there so we decided to finish it up on our comal and the second part of the burrito was waaay better because of it. Overall their options look really good and appetizing but sadly after the encounter we had I'm no so sure I'd make the drive over to eat there, but would not say no to food being brought in case we had an event or something. read more

Came at my sisters suggestion and was pleasantly surprised. What a hidden gem. I ordered the tacos Supreme and they were very delicious. If I had to find fault with anything it would be the flautas could use more meat. In the case of the tacos Supreme I didn't mind since they were topped with asada meat. The red salsa is spicier than the green. My sister got the nachos and they were really good too. Even the refried brand were good. The horchata was perfect too. For desert we ordered churros and they were crispy on the outside and soft inside. Yum.. can't wait to try the rest of the menu. read more

This is my FAVORITE Mexican Food restaurant in all of El Paso. The Carnitas Burritos are Exactly like the Carnitas Burritos I remember in California, large, stuffed with delicious juicy carnitas, guacamole & mild pico de gallo. The rest of the menu is delicious as well, my usual go to, aside from the Carnitas Burrito, is a Combo #5, a Shredded Beef Taco & Enchilada, with a side of rice & beans. For those who like spice, their salsas pack a punch! I spoke with the owner and he was a very friendly, informative fellow, telling me about the family's long tradition that started out in Southern California and opened up shop out here. He also told me about all the fresh meat he orders daily from his supplier, the marinating process, etc. Just absolutely DELICIOUS food all around!! I can't find any other restaurants in El Paso with the same flavors, other restaurants just can't get the spices right. Their original was in Barrio Logan right by the Coronado Bridge. I ordered the 3 rolled tacos with Guacamole and a carné asada burrito. I could taste the quality.
