Bottom line: a neat local spot with lots of character A couple of times a year I need to take takeoff on my motorcycle and find some solitude. I love my family to the end of the Earth, I just need a break from them sometimes. I used the "hotel tonight" app and it happened to land me here, which was a really neat pleasant surprise. I knew nothing of this place before rolling up and was instantly charmed by it. It's close enough to the ocean that you can walk, it's close enough to food that you can walk, the people that work there are cool and friendly. There's nothing fancy or exotic about the facilities, it's just a neat old place to stay. I enjoyed my short time here very much. Do not book here. Unfortunately this place was extremely unsanitary and there were a few blood spots splattered on the walls from dead mosquitoes.. We obviously didnt book this place for a luxurious experience, just a place to sleep for a night before we head back down the coast, so didnt expect anything extravagant but the 1 star is for the uncleanliness. You're better off paying the extra $60-90 to stay literally anywhere else in the area so you dont wake up itchy and bummed. read more

Would give a minus 0 if I could. Improve Everything!! We checked in for our 21s wedding anniversary and went to our room and it was bad. Then we went to another room and it was worse. Public hairs on bathroom floor, severely ripped chairs, the furniture drawers didn't even close. When I went to get a tissue there was a gross red substance on the tissues in the box. I was disgusted!! We went to check out right after checking in for 2 nights. I asked to speak to the manager about not having our card charged for at least the 2nd night since that in with the 24 hours cancellation policy but on a Thursday was not available. We went back on Saturday figuring there has got to be a manager on site. Once again no manager available. I have called 3 times since we were there and no manager has returned my calls for a refund. Our card had been charged and with the conditions as deplorable as they were compared to the website photos is serious false advertisement. I suggest looking at the yelp photos instead on the San Simeon Lodge photos which depict a false representation of the condition of the rooms. read more

Got a room for $130 on Hotel Tonight. For the price, not bad. Good location, heated pool, restaurant and bar on site. Rooms are old and musty, but the hot water and pressure were good, parking was easy and you can't beat the location right across the street from the beach. With that being said: the mattress had way too much bounce, TV is really tiny, the shower head leaked and as the water hit the shower floor, it sprayed onto the bathroom floor, which after 8-10 hours, caused the entire bathroom floor to be wet. But again, for the price, you really can't go wrong. read more

This place needs a lot of help. So much dust everywhere and worn-out furniture. We had to call down to the office after 10 pm because when we got into bed the sheets were itchy. We pulled down the covers and saw there was dog hair all over the sheets. The beds are old and very uncomfortable. Other than that, - No housekeeping came to clean the room, give fresh towels, provide toilet paper, or empty trash l. It is very painful to post a not so good review. This was a last minute booking and trip for me. I used Expedia to book 2 nights here. I didn't set my expectations too high which was good. The pictures online are not true to what you get. The front desk staff was very friendly and the lobby is cute. I booked an ocean view room it said it had a balcony but what they call the balcony is just the second level walkway. My room was very outdated. There is no AC, they do give you a portable fan. I got there after dark so didn't notice the mold in the bathroom until the next day. The chairs in the room were old and ripped up. The bed was clean as I did check. The lodge grounds are nice. But this place needs some TLC. I would not stay here again and unfortunately wouldn't recommend. It is close to a nice beach and it was less expensive than the places along the beach in Cambria. But you do get what you pay for. read more

Flat beer and overpriced in the restaurant I went for the happy hour but not much was on that menu. It wasn't that happy

OK for a quick night or two. The rooms are clean, reasonably well appointed, and the desk staffer was friendly. Despite it's relatively modern appointments, the signs of aging are evident. But, on a budget, it is a relatively good deal. However, we ate breakfast in the restaurant, and it was just this side of awful. I ordered a Belgian Waffle that arrived cold. It was advertised as having "Blueberry Compote" with it. What I got was a waffle that tasted like cardboard frozen, perhaps?) and about 25 shriveled up tasteless blueberries scattered across it. The "maple syrup," wasn't. It was pure corn syrup with caramel coloring that had almost no maple flavoring at all. My spouse got a standard eggs, bacon and hash browns and toast. The eggs were overcooked, the bacon limp and greasy. The toast slices were like brown Wonder bread. Even the margarine (not butter) was tasteless. Coffee was just OK. And, breakfast wasn't a bargain either. We did tip well (we always do), and the bill was nearly $40.00 WITH a 10% discount. Bottom line is, sleep there, but DO NOT eat there! Driving to Cambria for a meal will reward you with a myriad of dining options. Even if you pay more, it's worth it. read more

My sister and I were looking for a hotel/motel for 1 night before our day at Hearst Castle. San Simeon Lodge was perfectly located and the price fit the budget. When we pulled up it looks like your average motel, but I knew what I was expecting and my expectations were met. I had looked online to see pictures of the motel and the rooms. We needed a room with 2 queen beds and enough room for 3 people. The room fit the bill. Check in was very easy and we felt very welcome. The room itself had a view of the ocean and the pool. The room was very clean. Only downside was no air conditioning and only one small fan. It was a little warm when we arrived so, when we were in the room we left the door open to cool off. When we left for dinner we left the windows open with the fan on high. The room became comfortable and we were able to sleep fine. Luckily the temp was in the 70's, If it had been in the 90's I think I would have been uncomfortable. Check out was also very easy. It was a fine room for what we needed. read more

The best thing about this hotel was the cleaning staff. The hotel was clean, and they cleaned it every day we were there. They even gave us extra soap when they noticed we ran out. The ambiance was ok. I thought it was closer to the beach, but there were actually hotels in front of it. The beach was within view, but didn't provide an amazing view. The furniture was not as it looked in the picture. Although it was the same, it looked like their marketing picture was from when they first opened. The furniture definitely had quite a bit of wear and tear. The shower looks like it had some work. I'm short, so I have no idea how it would be for people taller than 5'2". It is in an awkward location. Instead of being high, it's located in the middle of the shower. Also I floor was not lived correctly so the door was a bit rough. The bed....if you get any type of motion sickness, this may not be for you. I was queezy the entire time from any slight movement in the bed. It was super soft but felt pretty old. Pet friendly, buy additional cost. $25 per dog pet day with a 2 pet limit. If animals are not reported its an automatic $150 charge. Also, you have to notify then upon check in as only specific rooms are allotted for pets. Overall it's decent if u go in winter as the prices are much less. Booked a room here for a girl's weekend since the price isn't bad convenient location. The carpet is extremely outdated and dirty. There were stains on the ceiling and walls. The beds were extremely loud. Afraid it would break just by sitting on it. We had a hard time sleeping. The window on the bathroom was broken. The pillow cases and sheets were stained as well. We found a desk fan in the closet and wanted to use it since the room was a bit stuffy, but the fan was so dirty. At check in, the staff was really nice. When someone from our group went to the desk to ask for an extra blanket and pillow, they were rude and said they didn't provide housekeeping. Would NOT recommend staying here. read more

Nice quiet location with beach access a short walk away. Front office staff were professional and easy to deal with. The Lodge is obviously an older building and could use some updating, but I didn't find anything during my stay that made me gross out or swear I'd never be back. Water pressure wasn't the greatest but we had hot water when we needed it. We stayed during the week except Friday night when the number of people substantially went up, it was surprisingly quiet even then. Small refrigerator in the room that worked really well, was kind of surprised to see there was no microwave. I usually put the "do not disturb" sign out for the duration of my stay in hotels etc. and this was no different so I'm unaware of the cleaning crews and how they are. I usually pack my own linen for the beds, so I didn't bother to note the shape of theirs. I've slept on a memory foam mattress for quite some time now, so had a rough time sleeping on these older mattresses. Not to say they were bad, just not what I'm used to. Had a few meals at the restaurant on site and was pleased with the staff, food, and drinks that were ordered. I wouldn't shy from eating their again. All in all, not a bad experience for the price, and was expecting worse after reading some reviews, but I'd be willing to stay again if I happen back in the area. read more

I decided to spend the weekend in Cambria and was looking to stay at The Morgan, which I usually do, but they were way too expensive. San Simeon Lodge had a great deal for 2 nights, so I and a friend decided to take a chance with this hotel. Overall, we're very impressed with the quality and service. For the price, it was fantastic! I would love to stay here again. Pros - Queen suites are renovated with fresh paint, new carpet, and clean furniture. Our room was on the 1st floor and had a fantastic view of the ocean. Take in mind though that these rooms DO face the parking lot, so you'll get cars obstructing the view sometimes. This wasn't a problem for us since we were out most of the day and only at the hotel early morning and evening. It was actually convenient to park our car so close to our room. - Bathrooms are clean and spacious. Although our water faucet was mislabeled (cold water was actually hot and vice versa), what mattered most was that there was no mold or mildew in the shower stall, which I'm a huge stickler about. The bathroom could use a heater, but if you heat up the main room the heat will seep through the door, so it's ok - Comfortable! Beds were not too firm or soft, but "just right", as Goldliocks would say - Pet friendly! Our dog enjoyed the ocean view as much as we did. - Friendly, welcoming, and accommodating staff who answered our smallest requests - they brought us hot water for tea, gave us extra keys, and even upgraded us to a larger room for a lower price. Cons - King rooms are outdated, old, and smelly. We were originally put in a king room, but had to switch since the fire alarm had dead batteries. Good thing we did! Unfortunately, the rooms are not as nice as the one's with queen beds. - Everything was tranquil and quiet until two loud women moved in next door on our second day. They were causing a nuisance after "quiet hours", so we asked the hotel manager for help. He was able to settle them down for an hour or so, but then they started their antics again and did not stop until 3 am. I wish the manager was more firm with these guests, since they caused quite a disturbance and prevented us from sleeping. - Bar & Grill doesn't have the best breakfast. Vouchers are good for saving money, but be prepared for a sub-par meal. The Cavalier across the road has amazing food for the same price! read more

Check in ab Breese. Walls are thick enough that I had no problem with noise from other rooms. Room was clean smell very pleasant. Bed was very comfortable. Lots of nice soft fluffy pillows. There is a charger for your car but only one. So do ask for it. You also get 10% off at the restaurant as a guest and it's a great restaurant very good food, nice little fireplace. It was one of the best trips I have ever been on. We arrived around 1 am after we both got off work. Even though we arrived extremely late the night management was still super sweet and understanding. They helped us with no problem. Guided us step by step on how to access the key to our room. The next day they were so gracious to us. The greeting was so warm and welcoming. I have never had such a great and wonderful experience as this one. And considering it was my first time here. The experience was wonderful. The rooms were beautiful and with the glass windows to the view of the ocean was perfect. It was truly a great first date. read more

Came here after a long day at Hearst Castle. The rooms were a little out of date and need some new appliances. There was no microwave in the room and the refrigerator was too cold so it froze some of our refrigerated things. The room felt really cramped and small. The pool was small and there was no hot tub, which was kinda sad. In the morning, I went to get coffee from the espresso bar and there was no one working there. Two employees passed by me and didn't acknowledge me. On the good side, the beds were super soft and comfortable and the man working at the front desk was helpful and kind. The rooms were quiet and cozy. Overall, I would recommend this hotel for a quiet place to sleep, but don't expect to be entertained. read more

There was a bed. It was comfy. That was about it. The shower was abysmal. It was attached so low on the wall, my husband couldn't even duck to get his head underneath. There's something wrong with the water in room 202. It was very hot out of the main valve, but when I switched it to the shower head, the water turned tepid, and sometimes cold. I'll spare you the details of my attempts to get clean. For the price, breakfast should have been included. Instead, we got a coupon for 10% off in their restaurant. Big whoop. We ended up here right before New Year's and when roads were closed due to high surf. Before this hotel, we stayed in Laguna Beach. I found a deal that was cheaper for a cuter hotel that included boutique coffee and tea, snacks, muffins, and bottled water. Nice try San Simeon read more

We went to celebrate our anniversary. Our room had the ocean view and the bed was comfortable. We slept with the windows open to hear the waves. The restaurant and bar have excellent service and great food! I highly recommend anything with the Mariana sauce. It's so delicious. Excellent drinks made to order. We are very disappointed in this accommodation. At $240/night it has no AC and the room is very warm. The place is a big party and the guests are extremely loud, which makes sleeping very difficult. The place is dated and we absolutely would not recommend anyone to stay here. it is too late at night for us to move to another hotel, otherwise we would not stay overnight at this dump. if you are looking for lodging in San Simeon area, do not bother with the San Simeon Lodge. Had an amazing stay here! My fiancé and I spent 2 days here and we loved it. It was very clean and quiet, not a bad price at only $66 a night either. Motel 6 prices for an ocean view room, you can't beat that! This is a really good option if you want to visit Cambria or Hearst Castle and not pay over $100 a night. Everything is only like 10 or less minutes away. You have beach access a few hundred feet from your room, and the staff here is super friendly. This was our last trip before our baby is born and we couldn't be happier with the place and location we chose. 5 out of 5 would recommend! It's family friendly, couple friendly, and budget friendly. Booked a room here for a girl's weekend since the price isn't bad and the photos online looked promising. Upon entering our room, we instantly noticed a strong musty odor and stains on the walls. The carpet is extremely outdated and dirty. I did not dare to put my bare feet on the floor. The bathroom was also very outdated with a stained bathtub and a door that would not shut all the way. We stuck it out the first night since we had gotten there in the evening anyway. I had a hard time sleeping and didn't feel very well to wake up the next morning to find about 15 bites around my legs and thighs. Bedbugs. We immediately packed up and spoke to the front desk about the situation and found a much cleaner place to stay. We had to reach out to the hotel manager the next week to receive a refund. He was very understanding about the situation and gave us a full refund for the 2 nights we booked, which was appreciated. He said they had an exterminator come out and there were not any bed bugs to be found, but all of the bites and symptoms I had tell me otherwise. Nice staff, but you're better off paying a little bit more for a cleaner room somewhere else! read more

The location was perfect and the staff was friendly but would NOT stay there again. The lodge was old and showed her age by the room needed serious updating. My husband and I saw ripped carpet, mildew on the bathroom walls, wall paper coming off the walls, bad plumbing (toilet didn't want to flush easily and light water pressure in the shower), and no AC (only a fan provided in the closet). We don't need fancy, just clean. Stayed in plenty of cheap motels that were clean and nice. When we walked in the room it was clear no one had vacuumed recently and it smelt like drywall. No biggie we thought, it looks good (maybe a recent remodel?) and the rate is reasonable. The next day we woke up and went to Cambria to visit family. Came back to the room and the beds were made, but the trash wasn't emptied and no vacuum still. Still not a huge deal, just walk the trash outside and move on. Next morning my wife rolls over and asks me what bug is on my pillow. Looks like a tick but without the big jaw. We look some more and they're everywhere. Some got squished overnight and left big blood stains on the sheets. Some are big, some babies. I checked both beds and they were everywhere. Put the kids in the shower, I put a bug in a cup and my wife used trash bags to pack up all the kid's stuff. I took my little friend in the cup to the front desk to have a chat. Some housekeeping staff were behind the counter talking to the hostess when I got there. It's funny when they speak Spanish, but don't realize the gringo with the bug in the cup speaks Spanish, too. They weren't saying nice things about me, but I didn't let on that I understood since I really don't care. Hostess ended up calling the owner who authorized a refund when I mentioned calling the health department. The wife went to Paso Robles to buy new clothes while the kids and I played at the beach. We found a room at Moonstone, and the front desk lady wasn't shocked at all when I told her the story. She said San Simeon hotels are all like that. So check your room, bring Raid, a vacuum, and Benadryl. read more

I am a snowbird from Lake Tahoe and have been wintering at the central coast beginning with my parents at 6 yrs old. I'm now 73. I've stayed at many hotels from Avila to San Simeon. Coming and going several times a winter. The first place I call is the San Simeon Lodge. Why? It's the people. As the reviews indicate the staff are wonderful. Get to know them you"ll be glad you did. Leave Tahoe [or other Calif. mountains] by 8:00 a.m. and you'll have time for a leisurely drive, lunch and be in the bar by 4:00 for happy hour and sunset. I have trouble breathing so the tropics are out for me. But here I breath easily and regain some health. For the elderly snowbirds' medical needs the cambria paramedics are fantastic and the medical facilities in San Luis Obispo 30 mins away cater to the elderly and are absolutely top notch. I know from experience. Spend awhile or you'll be mlssing so much. With winter you'll find that perfect getaway. Whether it a lonely beach, romance, bird watching, watching the kite sailors and surfers or fishing, though slow in the winter there's still some to be found. Wine Country tours and the many area restaurants. [If in Cayucas don't miss Schooners chowder]. Morro Bay ,Cayucas. San Luis Obispo, Cambria and Paso Robles are all a short scenic drive. The beach at San Simeon bay is a gem. You can always get out of the wind and work on that tan at the North end. Be sure to grab a steak for the barbie and a bottle of wine for sunset , there are BBQ 's on the beach and in the park overlooking the bay. There are three levels of rooms. If your fussy you may want to consider a upgrade. The view rooms have a excellent view and are very nice, the mid range clean and roomy with the rest comfortable and cheap. Thats where you'll find me. You'll always find the best winter rates at the lodge although all in the winter lower their rates. As the locals say summer is great but winter is best. The pace is slow and relaxed. Give yourself a chance and you just may leave feeling wonderful. Weather is generally mild around mid 60's, shorts and a sweatshirt. Anyway snowbirder or looking for a affordable get away between Oct and April you may find myself or laughin John [you'll know him when you hear him] at sunset happy hour we both like to help people to enjoy and love a good yarn. read more

This is a review from a person that is not picky at all. I liked this hotel! The only reason reason I didn't give 5 stars is because there were obvious cleanliness issues (as pictured). Price was $87/night. We stayed in room 225, which is in a side building parallel to the lobby. Note: there is a side AND back parking lot, you do not have to park in the front near the lobby! Location was 5 stars; 10 min to elephant seal vista point, 10 min to the Hearst beach, 10 min to cambria, 20 min to cayucos, and 30 min to morro bay ! Amenities is 3 stars; standard mini coffee maker, mini fridge, mini blow dryer. Nothing spectacular nor terrible. Room is 4 stars; stayed in a king bed, the room was the smallest I've ever stayed in but it was cozy and with a large patio that gave me a view of the ocean and pool! Decor/cleanliness is 2 stars; not disgusting, I'd stay again, but if you're real picky and paranoid maybe not the place for you? Outdated decor also. Service is 5 stars; friendly staff. Willing to accommodate rooms, apply aaa discounts, and are easy to access. read more

I would give them 3.5 stars if I could. We had a pleasant stay even if we could hear the people in the other rooms. We got a great deal for a two bed room for two night for our trip to Hearst Castle here. First the room was roomy and we had an ocean view from the window. Huge plus. The bathroom was fine, though the water pressure is kind of low but not a deal killer. We had an upstairs room but we did here our neighbors on both sides through the wall, so they are a bit thin. The heater worked great and the complimentary coffee in the room is nice. They also have a restaurant and convenient store on premise which is nice. We had breakfast at the restaurant one morning and ended up going across the street to Cavalier for breakfast the second day and it was better at the Cavalier. We also ate dinner in Cambria both nights and found a gem of a restaurant in Cambria called Robin's Restaurant on the west end. We also ate at Old Stone Station which was just OK. The staff is friendly and helpful. We had a really pleasant stay at the San Simeon Lodge overall. You can get a room across the street on the ocean side for double the price or more typically. read more

Miguel (the underpaid security guard) is rude AF. Me and my friend were enjoying a little getaway and decided to crash here for the night. We kept the Windows's open, since we realized they had no AC in the room, only a heater. Miguel(the security), strolled up out of nowhere and startled us. He slammed on our room door, and yelled at us to keep the noise down. I asked why he didn't simply knock on our door, or, call our room phone, but he said he didn't give a fuck and did what he wanted. We apologized to him if we were loud, but explained that not once did we get notified about us being loud. We asked for management and he said he was the only one at the property, so the only choice we had was for him to call the police. WOWWWWW WHO WOULD'VE THOUGHT. The part I really like is we got a double queen and the room is set up so anyone in one bed can't see anyone in the other bed. Perfect if 2 couples are traveling and you want to get busy but aren't so cool with being watched. That said they will hear you lol. The bath is set up such that one of the beds would be the "master bedroom " Only downside so far is the office is only open until 10 so you can't be a super late check-in.
