Very good stay overall. The room was clean and comfortable, with a nicely upgraded bathroom. The location is excellent--very close to the ocean and surrounded by plenty of restaurants and shops. Avoid: Capturing Biometric Data for unknown use. Feels like checking into a prison. So we pull up to the front desk to check in after a long drive and ready to crash. There is a teenage girl and the front desk who seems like this is her first job but whatever. After provide our ID, credit card, and answer the standard questions about pets/smoking/etc she says, ok now Im going to direct you to this tablet that is going to ask you some questions. The tablet is an AI agent that then asks you the same questions you just answered , and makes you read and sign a long disclaimer. When you hit "Enter", without asking the tablet takes your photo. I told them, "hey I would like to opt out of taking my photo as its biometric data. AI can use that kind of PII data for all sorts of shady, use and that data can be sold or hacked" She said, "Sorry I will not check you in unless we can take your photo" and started giving attitude. I asked if she could tell me why they need to take my picture when I just provided my photo ID, or what program was being used to store my face biometric. She said no. I asked if I could speak to her manager if they could wave the requirement. She refused to try. All with a ton of attitude and a string of the typical "Sir, sir, its our policy sir" diatribe that all the worst corporations have. We went across the street to a different where I kid you not we were greeted with freshly made warm cookies, beachfront view with firepits, friendly staff. I was initially worried about staying here because they didn't have AC. I was glad they had a ceiling fan so it wasn't hot in the room. The room was bright and updated. It was clean but they overlooked a bar of soap (left by the previous occupant) on top of the soap dispenser in the shower. The bed was comfortable but it creaked a lot. We stayed on Fourth of July weekend so it was noisy. They had a huge grassy area where I walked our fur baby. I would not mind staying here again if we need pet-friendly accommodation. read more

This motel is nicely located within walking distance to the beach with a pretty good restaurant across the street. There are 3 other restaurants within walking distances as well. The front desk lady was very nice and welcoming. As for the negatives, there were long black hairs all over our bed and pillows, the counters do not get cleaned well at all, and towels that are no longer white should be removed permanently. I Clorox wipe all of the counters whenever I travel. This was the dirtiest room I've ever had, as if the counters never get cleaned. As for the towels, two of them were brownish gray. These should just be removed from use. They looked disgusting. Lastly, the housekeepers should put their hair up. I'd understand if a hair got on the sheets. Stayed June 26th and 27th for a cost of $571.50. Outrageous for this level of motel. First be aware the staff is not honest. Upon checking in we made the young girl aware of a $30 dollar extra person fee that was on our bill. There were two of us. She explained it wasn't a charge, only shown to indicated potential extra fees. Not true, we were charged the 3rd person extra fee. The room is sparse, but the one positive I will say is the bed was clean and comfortable. The bathroom was really bad. We had no soap. They have dispensers attached to the walls by the sink and in the shower for soap and lotion. The sink dispenser had lotion in the soap dispenser and the other was empty. Neither of the shower dispensers even worked so we literally had no soap whatsoever in the bathroom. Luckily, we travel with our own. All the doors in the room were filthy and marked up, which leads you to believe how clean is it really? The indoor pool and Jacuzzi was dirty looking and very unappealing. If I only paid $150 to even $200 a night I might say you get what you pay for, but to be charged nearly $600 for this level of accommodations was a complete rip off. I would never stay there again and recommend you don't either. They are dishonest and don't provide even the minimum amenities a motel should. Additionally the water pressure is non existent. One friend with very thick hair couldn't shampoo because there simply wasn't enough water pressure to be able to rinse her hair adequately. Stay away!! read more

My husband lost his shoes at the spa jacuzzi and I called and emailed asking if any other quest turned it in or staff found it after the stay. They responded but never got back to me knowing someone took it which is considered theft. Must have booked the motel at least 5 days in the past and stayed from 10-12. This will be last and final time due to the security issue and disappointment by other guests. This was a last minute booking for us. We went on a Sunday and planned on coming back home only looking at the temperature for Monday being at 116... we were like no thank you! So we stayed and had a great time. We got a room with two queen beds. I'm really picky when it comes to clean beds and sheets and these were in excellent condition. We made friends with the staff at the front desk. They were adorable! This place is dog friendly. They asked for 25 per dog which we thought was a great deal so we did it and our dogs were happy to be there. There was a store and a restaurant nearby that was walking distance and access to the beach was directly across the street. San Simeon did not disappoint... We loved it and will be back for more... We've been coming to Silver Surf for about 10 years now and have always loved this place. Even before the remodel, it's been one of our go-to spots and we've never had a bad experience until this trip. The room was still clean like always. My wife did notice a bit of an odor, especially around the spa area, but overall everything else was fine. What completely ruined this stay was how the towel situation was handled. After using the pool and spa, we used the towels in the room to dry off since there are no towels provided in the pool area. When we asked for a couple fresh towels so we could shower, the manager flat out refused. We were told they only provide two towels per room and it's our choice whether to use them for the pool or for showering. No extras and not even an option to exchange the wet ones for clean ones. I've stayed in hundreds of hotels and motels over my life and I have never had this happen. Not once. Even the most basic places will at least let you swap out used towels. The next morning we spoke with the same manager again. We weren't looking for any handouts. That wasn't the goal at all. We just wanted to explain the situation again because maybe the night before was just a bad moment. We all have those. We were hoping he'd see how ridiculous the situation was and how easily it could have been handled differently. Instead, we got the same response and the same attitude. We were basically told it's our choice whether we stay there or not. That's what really did it for us. Not even meeting us halfway or showing any kind of understanding. We have been coming down to the San Simeon/Cambria area for years. We've always stayed at the Silver Surf Motel. We have dogs and it's right across the highway from the beach...too easy. The rates have always been affordable and the rooms in our opinion are clean and the beds comfortable. No, it's not the Hyatt but we really love it. Our issues began when the family that owns it stepped back and put in a manager and his wife to run the grounds and front desk. The hot tub, pool and grounds look great but the attitude we've received from the husband and wife are now intolerable. They treat us like we're bothering them every time we check in even though we always try to be friendly hoping that this time they'll remember us or change their attitude. There's no way to contact the owners because all emails are through the office which the couple run. We've unfortunately decided to stop staying there. It truly is a sweet little spot that's affordable and close to the beach but because of these managers we're done. I'm sure that there will be an amazing review from someone right after we post this to try and balance our negative review. We will be staying somewhere else from now on. read more

The floors were so dirty they turned our socks and feet black. I took two wash cloths and used them to clean the bathroom floor turning them black. ( see attached photo) I went took the wash cloths to the front desk to show them how dirty the floors were. The person that came out of back was uncaring and appeared upset that I was bothering him. The only thing he was concerned with was as he put it was that he didn't appreciate that I had ruined the wash cloths. I booked Silver Surf Motel through Hotels.com and noted that my eighty‑year‑old grandmother would need an ADA‑accessible room. I know third‑party requests are not guaranteed, yet I still expected a bit of courtesy and effort when things did not work out. The room we received was not ADA and the bed was waist‑high, impossible for my grandmother to reach. I went straight back to the front desk and asked for a roll‑away cot so she could sleep at a lower level. The woman on duty snapped that they had none and acted irritated that I even asked, then refused to give me her name. José, the only other employee, said he would try to find a solution. We left for dinner while he looked. When we returned, José produced a small plastic bathroom step stool, maybe six inches high, and nothing else. I asked again about a cot or any alternative. His response, word for word, was, "I'm extremely overwhelmed right now and I'm done helping you." No apology, no manager, just a flat refusal to continue assisting. Only after more pushing did they grudgingly bring out a cot much later that night and waive the fee, but by then the damage was done. A little empathy and clear communication would have turned a simple room mismatch into a manageable inconvenience. Instead, Silver Surf Motel offered indifference, hostility, and a complete lack of customer service. The price was right for a clean and comfy room. No frills. But we just slept one night and it was comfy. The plus is that they had Disney Chanel for my 3 year old granddaughter. For the purpose of a sleep stop it was great! The only reason I did not give 5 stars is because the vending machines were out of all drinks and it did not dispense our chips. We've been coming here for years with our big dog. Prices range from. $75 to 175$ depending with Saturday night holiday weekend the most expensive and weekdays off season the least. It takes about a minute now to book on Expedia. We come 8 times a year at least alternating within Morro Bay and other coastal spots. The girls up front are friendly. Curiously we've heard chickens in the managers fenced yard but no roosters in the morning. There's an indoor hot tub/pool. We're across the street from the beach. There's a grassy central area courtyard with picnic tables somw people enjoy. Our dog likes to walk around and smell. There's Big Sur cafe next door for meals also dog friendly patio or there's Cambria. We're looking forward to when the highway 1 goes through to Monterey maybe next year. read more

First time staying here. I always judge a motel/hotel by its bedding. So...I was pleasantly surprised by the white linens. The bed was hard. Room was small. And there was barely enough room to walk around. Regardless, I was happy with it - for the price and location. I'll never understand why these beach motels won't upgrade their properties. This place is so trash! Horrible service! They literally make you wait until 3:00 on the dot to check in. You can be inside and the zumahh lady doesnt greet you or even let you know anything just expects you to read the signs. Then greets you by "id and debit card" and the bathroom so dirty for having to wait until 3pm to check in. The tvs are so outdated and gotta have heart surgery to figure out how to get the cable on. The employee, Jorge Santacruz, working at the receptionist desk was very rude when we were trying to check in. As soon as we walked in the door he rudely said "I'm not checking anyone in now!" When I asked what time check in was he yelled out 3:00! That's all he said to us. As we waited outside we noticed he started checking in other guests before 3:00. When we approached the registration desk he snapped at us " 1 at a time! " . Every time I asked a question, he was short and rude. I have stayed in many nicer motels with better service than this place. This man made me feel very uncomfortable. Had one of the worst hotel experiences here. First they canceled our reservation made through Hotels.com without telling us, which I discovered upon check in. But somehow there was another reservation directly with them? Both the woman and the man behind the check in counter were rude. The towels left a sticky residue on our skin, the toilet wasn't clean, the bathroom window was broken, one of the pieces of "art" on the wall was broken, the water pressure in the shower was almost non-existent, and there wasn't a blow dryer in our "deluxe" room. I checked in, went to my room, realized there was only one bed. I returned to the desk and explained that to the woman there. I showed her my confirmation that showed two beds. She said she only saw that there was one bed and refused to honor my reservation. She was willing to charge me more to change to a room that was available that matched my reservation, but would not honor my reservation. I said that's ridiculous and finally because my 17-year-old daughter was sitting there and it's 9 PM at night decided I would just pay the $28 extra. But told the woman I would leave a terrible review. She said that she did not want my business and refused to honor my reservation at all and turned us away at 9pm. She refused to show me the refund as it was a nonrefundable confirmation. I had to call Southwest hotels to get my refund and they did honor the refund after I explained the story and my experience and they were horrified that this woman would treat somebody that way. read more

I chose this place because of the rating on 3 different hotel/motel sites, and everyone was right, it's nice! The room was 208, and it had a large window facing the ocean. I got in late, but knew the morning would be spectacular. The room looked like it was remodeled in a very modern way. It had warmth and charm. The fireplace was a nice touch. When I got my key, the gentleman at the desk said it was a small room but I thought it was very large. The bathroom was nicely remodeled and, with the exception of the bathtub, had nice touches. The fixtures were updated, they provided soap, shampoo and conditioner, and did it in a non-wasteful way. It was so quiet there, I slept better than I had in weeks. The bed was firm, with no dips in it, and the bedding was very clean and fresh. The TV was easy to manipulate. They even had premium channels, so I watched a movie before bed. I noticed that they had apps, but they didn't connect. My only 'concern' was that it took 3 tried to get the room key to work (I had to call the desk and have him come out, after going back to change the key). It wasn't that big of an issue but others may have been a bit bothered by it. It never was a problem after that. The other was that the pool was being remodeled, but I wasn't going to use it, I was there for a lighthouse tour in the early morning. Used a new credit card for this stay. Never used before. After we came home from our vacation we had multiple charges for tires in Fontana $499.00 and lots of SHEIN purchases as well. So scary! It is 100% from them as we did some legal investigation and they pin pointed them as we had not used the card before that. I would be very weary staying there. DO NOT USE YOUR ATM BANK CARD! If you have to stay use a card that has protection added to your benefit! We stay normally at the Cavalier/ Sands by the sea. I highly recommend that hotel. It gets a 5 star in our book. Decent motel/hotel. Okay place to stay but there aren't any better, nothing really special about the room. The receptionist gave us the wrong key at first and we had to wait until 8 AM to get our correct room, and the room we were given was underwhelming to say the least. It already had a microwave in the room but the interior of the microwave was absolutely disgusting. I don't have a picture of it but it had little brown spots and smelled diabolical. The person at the front desk said it was because people would put metal into the microwaves and heat them up but it looked like someone tried microwaving a deceased person's body part. But when we moved to the room we actually paid for, it was a huge upgrade. We originally paid for a 2 bed (bedroom) but were given the key to a 1 bed (bedroom) and basically told to deal with it until 8 AM. In summary, this place is 'mid', it's not bad but there are certainly better places and server/staff was/is laid back and seems like he doesn't care but still messed up the keys, yikes. read more

As a frequent road tripper between LA and SF, hands down, the Silver Surf Hotel is the best spot to lay your head! The rooms are neat and cozy and the staff is very friendly! I asked for a few more coffees and towels during my stay and it was easy-peasy! Also, taking in a hot tub session is great before hitting the road again in the morning. Hotwire lead me here like a blind date! (For most of the time, I do enjoy the surprise but I also use filter to select over 75% recommendation only) It's pitch dark driving from San Luis Obispo to San Simeon, the last hour felt like forever... It's an old motel, well maintained but dated, lobby seem cozy with fireplace. Upon checking in, the front desk told me I can park by lobby since I already did, and walk across the lawn to the room, I was like no! I like to park my car closer! Parking space seem tight for a middle of nowhere, when it's full booked, I think some would have to park on the street. No AC, not a problem! I had window open to let in some fresh air in and in late May it got quite chill at night after a while. I couldn't lock the window (or the latch was broke), anyway, it seem safe and quiet so I decided to leave it and slept through the night. It does has a ceiling fan though... Very typical motel, bed and pillows are comfy enough. They do have plugs on the bedside table which is a plus! This place is very quiet, I almost didn't hear anything until the next morning starting at 8 people dragging their luggage by. Ok, so a fewww things went wrong here: - We initially got assigned to the wrong room, causing us to walk in on a couple -I asked if someone could show me how to use the fireplace, and the manager said they would - but didn't follow through; I did ask someone again the next day and they showed me -Second night we stayed, it was freezing, and suddenly our keys didn't work - had to walk out to the lobby to get them replaced Honestly, a few small mishaps happened during the trip, but they were handled well by the staff. We only needed a room to sleep for we were on our way for a glamping trip in Big Sur from LA. Room had been redone with new carpet, bedding, shower. Big refrigerator in room and microwave. Great, for we had food supplies to chill. The room fridge even had a freezer section so we could chill our ice packs. There was a little trash outside our door but inside room was clean and decent. Trash was cleared away by staff by early morning. Room and linens overall were fine. No frills yet we felt pleased to stay here, not disappointed. While I really like several of the places to stay right on Moonstone Beach in Cambria, they were sold out or $200 plus a night. Our trip was last minute. We did catch the sunset there on Moonstone Beach, Cambria, but had nice afterglow out our motel window after checking in. Coffee maker in room. No breakfast but they give discount coupons to a restaurant next door. We didn't use but wanted to mentioned. We did stop at a nearby liquor and convenience store that had some great Paso Robles wines for our trip to Big Sur. In the morning we did return to Cambria to hit their mid-size grocery market for camping supplies and get gas since Big Sur is expensive. Cambria is really a cute town, and it is close to San Simeone. Other family's kids enjoyed the indoor pool. Ocean is across the street. Hearst Castle down the road. read more

Located across the street from the oceanfront hotels & restaurants, so it was close enough for us to still hear the waves crashing off in the distance at night. Room was mostly clean, besides the long black hair on the bed cover & one in a hand towel. Nothing special here. They did have an indoor pool & spa that looked like to be a good size & closed at 10p, but we didn't try it ourselves.
