The brisket was wonderful. Outside seating added to our experience. The folks were friendly. I would return if near the area.

BBQ doesn't get ANY better than this place! I have never had better smoked wings in my life. We got the Tubman to share so we could taste everything and boy- it did not disappoint. We got the mac n cheese, the hash and rice, and the green beans for sides. Every single one of them was delicious. The pulled pork, smoked chicken, and brisket were out of this world. I went there for the first time today and I'm trying not to overreact because of recency bias, but Railroad might be my favorite BBQ in this city. I had the pulled pork and it was great without the sauce, but I tried all three, and split the BBQ into thirds and had a little bit of all of it because each was so good. I think the vinegar was probably my favorite. Thicker than most, and not crazy strong. Hash and rice, green beans and macaroni were all A-plus. Went there today for my first experience in southern BBQ. I came in and waited for my order to be taken. A gentleman who was either the Owner or Manager asked me what I needed, and said one of the ladies would be with me shortly. I waited a few minutes and he had a lady come up to me. She started to take my order (I knew exactly what I wanted) and then shortly just left... I was very confused. Another lady came up and we restarted the order. The food was ready in a good amount of time. The meat was cold like it came out of the fridge. However, it tasted good and was cooked perfectly. The macaroni and cheese were also good but cold; the potato wedges were the only thing warm. If everything had been warm and I didn't have someone leave right in the middle of taking my order, I would give it a 5/5. I will likely give this place another chance. read more

Wow! We found the best BBQ in Columbia. Due to covid we had missed going here. Finally at a time we wanted to go they were open. And I'm glad we made it. A unique decor. Photos and art on every inch of the walls and built into the tables finish. Here we were in Black History Month and we were in a place that shows many of the historical black leaders of SC and a few of NC and it is there year round to see. It is such a place of warm ambiance. The staff will treat you just as warmly. Then comes the food. Oh yes, the food. It was the best pulled pork BBQ I have had. I was given all three sauces to try. I mixed them together and love the result. My husband got the brisket sandwich and declared it perfect. He said it was cooked perfectly. He had potato salad that was so much like my own and I would go back for the slaw and before this I have never particularly liked slaw. read more

The food was absolutely great! If you are sensitive to the type of wood that is used to smoke meat they post the wood they use on the menu above the register. The employees were motivated to provide good service and to make your experience a good one. The environment/feeling in the restaurant was great and contributed to feeling like you were eating with friends at their house. The hash was pretty good. Definitely recommend the LC combo to allow to try some of their meats. The wife had the Pullman salad which she really enjoyed. The kids had the ribs and Mac and cheese. Everyone raved about the food. The pulled pork was so good! The spicy collards were pretty good. I would have liked more heat but the texture and flavor of the collards was exceptional. The sweet cornbread was very moist and the prefect complement to the meal. If you are driving through Columbia and have time, it is definitely worth the stop! Great BBQ spot! It is rare that every single food item on the plate is outstanding and they nailed it. The pork is so flavorful that you don't need any sauces to cover it up. The meat was very juicy with just the right amount of smoke. The brisket was tender and flavorful with a nice smoke ring. I also had the collard greens and beans. The inside dining area is very clean and decorated nicely and there is a small patio if you prefer outside dining. I can't wait to try other items on the menu. read more

One of the best if not the best barbecue in Columbia, it is moist and the selection of sauces was first rate. The collards are the best I've had. The atmosphere inside is a history lesson of our culture over the last 50 years or so. Looking at all the paraphernalia is worth the trip alone but the barbecue is the icing on the cake. Oh my goodness this is the one!! The brisket is beyond any other I have tasted in the area. Absolutely favor-full, juicy, Smokey and a full flavored with a taste that can not be beat. The chicken and pork was excellent and oh those ribs were the boss. My wife and I had the "Tubman" and after feasting on it today we have more than enough for tomorrow. The corn bread was moist, sweet and succulent. The potato's were good but a little soggy and the coleslaw was perfect. The only real criticism may be the beans were well overdone and lifeless. And Oh that tangy BBQ sauce was my favorite.- but - the others were also good. The place is very interesting, comfortable and kept clean. And, our waitress was attentive and quick to please. A must go. The serving sizes are giant so I suggest splitting if you go for lunch. Also the banana pudding was really authentic-if you're into that! I had the pulled chicken with the vegan collards and my partner had the pulled pork with coleslaw. I would certainly suggest the collards. Sort of a tie between the chicken and pork but I will comment that the "smoke" flavor is not overwhelming which I appreciate a lot. *It is a little pricier than other BBQ spots in town but I would say with the ambiance and the flavor=totally worth it. read more

This place has cool historical ambiance that is really unique and empowering. A great uplifting vibe! We shared the Tubman platter, with 4 meats, and three sides for $42. It fed me, my husband and child--could have easily fed 5 people! The greens were absolutely perfect. I got the mild ones and they still had a little kick but it was the perfect amount of spice. I wasn't a huge fan of the macaroni but I really appreciated the cornbread that was made without eggs (I have an allergy) which is hard to find at restaurants. There was also vegan friendly options and labeled "vegan-friendly yellow rice" "vegan friendly beans" "vegan friendly greens" etc. the service was great! The pit master came and talked to us to make sure everything was good. Several people checked on us while we were eating. Our server was so friendly and nice! Loved this place! read more

Amazing!! It's a small building but it's been well loved. The inside is a testament to Columbia and African American history. On the wall art work, family pictures and memorabilia make it a great Local or Student hangout. Customer service was amazing, every single person there made sure we had a good experience. For a party of two we ordered the sample; The Tubman with four meats. For sides we had the Collards and Kale, Potato salad and Baked beans With cornbread and Texas toast. 57$. The Mrs. and I were killing some time in Columbia. We had gone to a diff BBQ the previous evening and decided to try some more BBQ. We looked at Yelp and decided on Railroad. The dining area is small, but that makes it easier to look/read all the stuff on the walls. We ordered The Tubman. It is a sampler platter of their ribs, brisket, pulled-pork, pulled-chicken and some sides. Rubs on ribs and brisket are dry, but (3) dipping sauces are included. All three are great. Chicken and pork are juicy. It's a lot of food, but all was top-notch. Railroad is at the top of my list if I ever find myself in Columbia again. read more
