Hidden on the side of JJ Bean on University Blvd, you'll find will find a walkway to one of the best ice cream joints in Vancouver. What normally is hustle and bustle during the school year, you'll find patrons basking in the sun on a hot summer's day enjoying a cone or sundae. There is no seating inside, so be prepared. I normally go for the London fog or honeycomb, but decided on the seasonal treat, roasted strawberries. It was creamy and fresh. Rain or Shine always has such yummy monthly flavours! For June, the store had matcha strawberry as well as black forest , which is what we got. I always get a kid's scoop in a waffle cone and it is the perfect size. The staff are usually UBC students and they're all very nice. Beware, the UBC location can get quite busy but it's a part of the summer experience read more

Love this place. Especially because of the unique flavors. The space is very small, but the nice thing is that it's one of the fewer ice cream shops around campus. Also, staff is friendly. They have taco tuesdays which is my favourite. You can choose 1 or 2 flavors and 1 topping. I recommend trying 2 flavors and topping it with candied hazelnut. The summer flavors are out and they are pretty great. I'd recommend the peach. read more

I love the creative flavours here. The core menu is great as is, and the monthly rotating flavours are super unique and fun. The monthly flavours occasionally include something savoury (past features include everything bagel, white chocolate chili pepper, sundried tomato) which obviously is not for everyone, but I love these and I hope they keep doing them. Mostly it's conventional (but still not always common) sweet flavours, though. For vegans, there's an excellent vegan vanilla ice cream and at least one seasonal. Their ice cream uses ingredients sourced from local farms. Although the flavours are almost always a hit for me, the quality of the actual ice cream occasionally lets me down. Sometimes it's great, but sometimes it's varying degrees of "icy" which makes it hard to properly enjoy the flavours. That being said, my most recent visit was one of the good ones! In particular, the orange sherbet on offer right now is awesome - it's not one of those artificial orange-swirled creamsicle-flavoured ice creams, but a creamy sherbet base swirled with a real orange reduction which is delicious and unlike any orange sherbet I've tried before! Rain or Shine is slightly more expensive than the average ice cream, but this can be explained by their local sourcing of everything. The "single" size is actually pretty big, though - the "kids" scoop is a good size for me if I don't want something too heavy, but the single 2 flavour keeps calling me back because it's too hard to choose just 1 flavour. Getting a waffle cone drives the price up because it's $1.5 extra, but it's seriously one of the best waffle cones around. They make them fresh and you can tell. read more

I had their apple crumble and salted caramel, loved both! The apple crumble did have more texture and I like how the salted caramel wasn't too sweet either. The prices are also really good for the large scoops you get, and they let you sample their flavors as well! read more

Ice cream taco Tuesdays anyone? We got a tiramisu one back when it was a seasonal flavour. Its espresso flavour was very strong. It was such a fun way to eat ice cream and you even get to add your own topping of choice too! Go check @rainorshineyvr out on Tuesdays for this amazing treat. It's a toss up between Rain or Shine and Earnest for my favourite ice cream place in Vancouver. We were in the UBC area to try Kinton Ramen so decided to stop by Rain or Shine as well as the day was so sunny. First time visiting there and I fall in love!! Here goes my money!! I got the coconut chocolate chunk (V) and coffee toffee in a waffle cone(single in 2 flavours). I LOVE the coffee toffee. 10/10 recommended to try. As for the coconut chocolate chunk, since it's vegan, it's less creamy and lighter. First of all I really like Rain or Shine and I've previously gone to Cambie location multiple times. I felt lucky finding RS at UBC while walking around here last Saturday, and I thought why not get a single scoop of icecream here? So I went in. Staff helped me sample some flavours, and later I chose my favourite flavour Blueberry Balsamic ($4.50). Couple things happened during my visit. The first scoop had a small of broken wooden bit in it. Because of the broken bit (from wooden spoon probably) I had to get a new one. I think what happened is that icecream sat in the freezer for too long and it might be the least popular flavour at this location. It was nice that staff got me new one,but this time my icecream had crunchy icy texture in it. I didn't like my icecream much due to icy texture. This is the reason why I give 3 stars. Rain or Shine has some of the most innovative and creative flavours I've seen in any ice cream shop. My favourite flavour is probably the blueberry balsamic! The slight sour of the balsamic is a perfect compliment to the sweet blueberry flavour. I got a single scoop (around ~ $4.50 I believe) and it was a pretty big scoop for the price. I tried my friends raspberry sorbet as well and it tasted very fresh and layered with hints of lemon as well which was lovely. I would recommend getting a fruit-inspired flavour if you plan on eating a fair amount of ice cream here. I feel like sometimes with ice cream you can get sick of eating the same taste (especially if it's a flavour that is very rich, you almost get sick of it a little bit). Regardless though I still love the flavours like London fog and chai they have from time to time. I would just get a smaller scoop. read more

It's been a while since I've been back to UBC and I was excited to hear Rain or Shine has an outlet on campus now. Rain or Shine seems like an institution in Van and I'd somehow never tried it (gasp!) so I was pretty game to stop by on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The outlet itself is pretty small but there's plenty of seating outside. It can get busy during the weekdays depending on the time but it was fairly dead for a Saturday. I got a few samples and ended up going for the balsamic blueberry and a coconut based chocolate flavor - a single scoop with two flavors in a waffle cone. Everything was pretty good. The ice cream wasn't super creamy or particularly complex and was fairly light overall. I enjoyed my ice cream in the freshly made waffle cone. The cone is on the thinner side and was maybe just a shade too sweet for me but was clearly very fresh and had just the right amount of bite for the ice cream. Overall a good experience. I'm not going to be dreaming about this place (check out Salt & Straw in the States) but I'll be back next time I'm in Van. read more

UBC now has some amazing ice cream! Lots of unique flavours plus the old standbys available in cup, cone or waffle cone. They also have sundaes and milkshakes. Located a few minutes walk from the main UBC bus loop and right next to the War Memorial gymnasium. No seating inside but there are plenty of tables outside and benches around this building that just completed construction this summer. We tried salted caramel, blueberry balsamic, and vanilla. Very good ice cream, everyone loved it! read more

Came here on a Taco Tuesday, and sure enough it's still the same great ice cream flavours as at the other locations! Definitely my favourite ice cream in the city so far, and the staff was really friendly. I had the cookie dough and the vegan coconut chocolate macaroon flavours, and they were both delicious, especially the cookie dough, which had excellent flavour and texture. The vegan coconut one was great too - and I don't mean compared to other vegan ice creams, I mean genuinely very enjoyable compared to any ice cream! I definitely recommend both, and the chocolate sauce topping adds a nice touch. That said, something about this place did feel a bit off compared to the other locations. The ice cream taco felt smaller, particularly the waffle, and my friend and I were pretty convinced things were about a buck more expensive than other locations. Maybe they've all increased prices and we didn't notice, but it feels like you're getting a little less for a little more money. read more

I am a conflicted girl. On one hand, rain or shine prides themselves as being made with local, high quality ingredients. I could taste this, as with the scoop of london fog I had ordered. The flavor was rich and caramelly. On the other hand....the texture is not there! My theory is that the milk/cream they are using is not fat enough and they aren't putting many stabilizers in there(which is understandable for a homemade ice cream store). This is my third time going to rain or shine and every scoop I have tried is filled with ice crystals. So all in all, very phat flavors...cant say the same for the ice cream base. read more

In my opinion, mind you I love icecream, the price was much higher than it's worth. It was good, but way too sweet for my tastes and the icecream melted very quickly (which means the quality isn't all that great). It's nice that we have a good icecream parlour on campus now, but I don't think I'll be coming here all too often! read more

Taste: 8/10 Value: 8/10 Ambiance: 9/10 Service : 9/10 This is my go to place to treat myself during school. This place is easy to get to (close to ubc bus loop) and the lineup time is usually shorter than the other locations. My favourite flavour that is a must try is the malted chocolate honey comb. The honey comb part is crunchy and adds texture to every bite. Overall I would come again when I feel like treating myself as the ice cream is on the pricier side. read more

I love Rain or Shine. My favorite flavor is probably Blueberry Balsamic. It has that creamy and delicious taste. The place isn't that busy. It is like a quick drop by for ice cream. The service was not great - the woman at the front was not pleasant and singing along to the songs playing in the shop instead of actually communicating with me. The ice cream was meh. For $6.30, you only get one tiny little scoop of ice cream, and the cone is a dollar extra. The flavour (I got Blueberry Balsamic) was good but there were large chunks of ice in my scoop - the batch was not fresh. read more

Good ice cream but bad service. I rarely write reviews but this one is very disappointing. I've been here and the other shop before and they are fine. Tonight there were only three customers and four servers. I still had to wait as they kept themselves busy doing whatever. When it came to my turn the server turned her back to me and had to be nudged by another server asking if I was being helped. She reluctantly answered my questions and served with a poor attitude. She even gave me bad looks multiple times for no reason. Not sure what happened but if this business thinks paying students don't deserve good service I'm not coming back. And I'm not even a student. read more

The Ice cream was very solid, and loved the service and the procedure in which they made the cones. The aspect I did not enjoy was the part when my strawberry shake tasted like somebody vomited into a public restroom toilet, and then poured the contents into the shake. It was so repulsive I had to throw it out my car window because of the awful stench. In conclusion, the cones and sundaes were outstanding. However the shakes were a horrifying nightmare that I will relive in the fiery depths of hell. read more

We tried the ice cream sandwich, the creme brulee cup, and the s'mores bar. I would say everything was good, but probably not something we would get again. After a while it just got a little too sweet and the portion was a little big so we didn't finish most of it. The next time I go if I ever go again I would just get one thing and share it because a bite or two is probably all you need to satisfy your sweet craving.

Each patron can have two tastes, and they have some wonderful flavor options (I almost couldn't choose). Seating wise inside there are three tables and a three seat bar, and outside they have an uncovered parklet. Overall, I loved their flavors and I absolutely wish they existed in California!

The bar is made up of high quality small batch grinders, perfect for grinding fresh for each cup, and a long line of pour over setups to give each cup the attention it deserves. Behind the bar you can see an Aiden by Fellows for quick batch brewing quality beans to the standards of the specialty coffee association or quick recipe testing. The menu is predominantly descriptions of the coffees they're currently brewing with a few classic and simple coffee preparations like a latte and a cortado, but nothing too involved because they focus on the coffee itself. I really liked how they separated the coffees by flavor profile so you could key in on the type of beans and roast you prefer. They offered several natural, honey, and anerobic options, which made me happy. My friend isn't a coffee geek like I am, so it was fun to see which he gravitated to and enjoy that alongside my choice, which was totally opposite. The barista side of the shop is long and narrow, with the bar predominating, but there's a great sitting area right next door that I didn't even notice until we were leaving. It has outer fried batter along with the French toast in the middle which made it a bit heavy after a meal, so probably would recommend to eat it with something light or on its own. The space was beautiful upstairs with gorgeous ceilings and windows overlooking the streets. Hope to visit again to try out their other menu items next time!

I specifically asked how many ounces the pitcher was and was told 32 oz, which sounded reasonable since we planned to get 15 oz beers. When the pitcher arrived, it was clearly 64 oz. The server apologized for the mistake, and I let it go, thinking we didn't have to drink it all. However, when the bill arrived, the price didn't match the quote. We were charged $25, not the $20 we were originally told when the 64-oz pitcher showed up, with the explanation that the regular price was $35 and that we had "saved" money. In the end, we were served twice the beer we wanted and paid twice what we intended, based on information that kept changing. Whether this was incompetence or intentional, it left me feeling frustrated and uncomfortable. The food and atmosphere really were great -- but the experience was overshadowed by feeling manipulated. Enjoy the food and beer, but pay close attention to what the wait staff tells you and what ends up on the bill.

Unfortunately, the lobster roll was a letdown. It wasn't very warm, the lobster itself didn't have much flavor, tasted off and the whole sandwich was just kind of dry. Thank goodness I also ordered the prawn cocktail because it saved the meal. It wasn't anything fancy, but the prawns were a good size and gave me something I actually halfway enjoyed. Overall, I didn't have the experience I was looking forward to.
