Absolutely horrible. I ordered take out today on Valentine's Day. They told me the wait was 30 minutes which was okay, I paid for the order and I ended up putting a stop watch on my phone. But with happy hour specials it makes up for it I guess. The service is decent, but be prepared to wait a bit. I ordered my food and then had to wait for a server to come by my table to get some silverware. No lie, I waiting for silverware for 5 minutes. And I just needed chopsticks and a napkin. First off, YUM! I am not a huge fan of sushi, but this place changed my mind! I have been CRAVING sushi since my visit. I had the steamed gyoza for an appetizer, the sauce they came in was delicious. I had the Tide Roll for an entree and the Pineapple Upside-down Martini. The water also had cucumbers garnished, Yum!! We got takeout from here on our last night in Amarillo. We got the Korean short rib to share, which was the best thing we tried, by far. The meat was tender and the flavor was great. Unfortunately, the sushi was not on par with the cooked food. We got the loch ness maki, ikura, and a salmon skin roll. The lock ness roll was decent, but the ikura was not super fresh, having that kind of sticky texture instead of a snappy, burst in your mouth effect. The rice in the salmon skin roll was wayyy overcooked and gummy. It was a gross texture to chew and I'd say borderline inedible. We also ordered a spider roll, which they left out entirely, and we got what looked like a spicy tuna roll with cucumber instead. Maybe just stick with the cooked food here as the one non-sushi item we got was actually good. It's also worth noting a few things about the staff. When I placed the order on the phone, I asked if it's possible for the salmon skin roll to be a hand roll. The woman didn't know what I was talking about and told me all of their sushi is hand-rolled. I told her a hand roll is cone-shaped and one large roll, and her response was, "So, you don't want it cut...?" Never mind. Then, when we were waiting for our food outside, there was a large group of staff hanging out and chatting on the patio and some of them were smoking on the job while adjusting tables and chairs. Ok... let me start by saying I'm a sushi snob... or maybe, more accurately, a foodie. That said, let's begin! The two rolls were the Philly roll and something deep fried.. the breading had ZERO flavor and a corn meal texture. The rice had no flavor.. (are you seeing a theme here?) Plus side - it was at least fresh... mostly. Coconut cream pie martini- sounds good right? ..no, wrong. Unless you like cream gasoline with stale coconut. If you do, you are in for a treat! The hostesses generally seem disinterested or annoyed at your presence and that's if they are at the station at all. I know times are tough and sometimes to keep the doors open costs have to be cut. I especially can't imagine what it's like to be a business owner at a time like this. That said, I have tried this establishment a few times before even before the pandemic and have unfortunately had similar experiences. I gave it a few shots before writing this review but now I just want to express my disappointment and steer future patrons towards the right decisions when the dining here. First the good: Decor and environment- this is one of the places Rain restaurant really shines. A fun trendy feel with friendly weight staff, good drink specials and playful diverse menu (interesting ideas with execution that leaves a bit to be desired as will be discussed) set this place up for success. The reason I've tried this place so many times is because of these factors that keep me wanting to come back. This is a good place to go out with friends or on a date. The hot stone cooking platter for example is really fun and cooking for yourself on a super hot stone makes for a good experience that enhances the dinner. Now the not so good: They have pretty good quality fish that generally taste fresh but getting any enough of it to really appreciate is difficult. I have ordered their expensive $16 special rolls, I have ordered their regular rolls I have ordered nigiri. Short of ordering a ton of sashimi (and paying through the nose for it) they are very very sparing with giving you fish. In roles where there is only tuna or salmon most of the roll is rice (which in my opinion is too sticky and not fluffy but that's nitpicky). It's hard to taste the fish itself. If the roll has any fake crab in it then they are more generous with the fake crab (which is super duper cheap for them to buy) and they give a tiny piece of fish. Even the ones which have a fish on top (which should traditionally coat the outside top half of the roll) just has a small sliver that falls off when you try to eat the piece. I'd like to acknowledge the fact that getting fish in Amarillo is probably hard given that we are landlocked. I understand that it would be expensive for them to be very generous but it's not like this is a cheap sushi place. If you're paying a premium of 16 to $20 for something it should meet your expectation for what you're getting namely... FISH. Even in dishes where the portion of fish is good like the sashimi salmon... they cut back in other weird places like the salmon eggs. I counted about 11 total eggs on top of the seven or so pieces of salmon (credit where it is due these pieces of salmon were large and substantial and delicious). just seems like an odd choice because salmon eggs aren't even all that expensive. Look at the pictures below to see what I mean by small portions of actual fish. Another thing I have noticed is that they are quite proud of their Texas style sushi menu. They feature a roll which has filet mignon on top. The magic of filet mignon is that it is really tender despite being low in fat. That stops being true when you cook it super hard. I got one such roll and the steak was super cooked to the point of being chewy, stringy and tough and rather bland. I'm not sure if they are really using filet mignon but in some ways I hope they aren't because seems like a waste of a good ingredient. For those disappointments there have been other successes. A lot of their appetizers are delicious and actually good portion size. As I alluded to above the hot stone dish is fun and tasty. I haven't had much of the cooked food but I hear good things. I hate giving bad ratings but if they could just fix the skimpy fish portions I'd happily be here all the time period money is type these days for everyone and if I'm going to spend $100 on my own dinner I at least want to know that I got to taste the wonderful ingredients they're working with. My Finace and I went on a double date here, I was worried because I don't even like sushi! The lighting here in really blue, and kinda gives off a night club vibe, they have a bar area and a large dining room. It's dark with neon blue lights. Our server was very friendly and offered lots of suggestions. The restrooms are a public school type style doors, and the walls are papers from Japan which is kinda cool. The food came very quickly, I got the pan noodles not really knowing what to expect. It was very sweet and pretty much just tasted like bell peppers-I love noodles, so I was NOT impressed! I actually tried some of the fried sushi and it was delicious! I want to go back to try more sushi! This place was wonderful! It's located downtown in a fabulous old 1930's era theater. The decor is very trendy, yet nice. I was in town for a work trip and came here at the suggestion of a friend who spends much time in the area. This place was wonderful! First, the happy hour prices are AMAZING!!!! A glass of house wine was $3 and domestic beer was only $1.50! Happy hour runs until 7 and also includes a variety of food and sushi items. The 7-8 rolls listed on the happy hour menu appeared to be half price. While we were deciding what to order, our server brought us a complimentary plate of edamame. I was super excited because every time I eat sushi I order edamame and I did not see it on the menu. It was delicious (marinated in some kind of soy sauce) and such a large plate of it that my friend and I could not finish it. Service was spot on. My water glass was never empty for long and the glasses even had a cucumber slice in them. I ordered one of the rolls on the happy hour for dinner and it was not only delicious, but the 8 pieces were almost too much for me to eat. Additionally, I ordered a cup of miso soup, which was also quite delicious. By the time we left, we were both extremely and pleasantly full. And the tab was so low!
