What I tried: Pad Kee Mao (#58) -- Stir-fried udon with a full house of meats, shrimp, and veggies. Spicy, saucy, and hits the spot if you're craving pan-fried noodles. Solid portion for $14.95 -- and the one thing I'd come back for. Crispy Tofu (#5) -- Tried it for the first time... and probably the last. Didn't quite land for me. $8.95. The takeaway: Nothing really stands out here, but it gets the job done if you're in the mood for Thai-style noodles. The know before you go: No dessert. Translation: no mango sticky rice. Tragic. I went here with my best buddy a couple of weeks ago, and he's been here many times, but it was my first time. I'm a pretty big critic when it comes to Thai food, especially so I was trying to not get my hopes up too much but I was surprisingly impressed. The food was a nice portion and decently priced. And the service was amazing, very friendly Staff. The food was very good and they did have Cook, zero which is an extra star for that. Everything was pretty awesome. It is a little dated inside, but that is OK. My only issue I had was the bathroom being outside where you needed one of those gas station keys that's attached to a piece of wood that typically those things are pretty nasty to touch you had to walk around outside to get to the bathroom and there were Hella flies out there that day. I don't honestly remember the status of the cleanliness of the bathroom so I won't comment on that. Bangkok Tokyo is one of the best restaurants I've visited recently. The outside definitely screams "hole in the wall"...which is often an excellent sign. Once you walk in, it's hard to get a table because there are so many other patrons either picking up their to-go orders or waiting to be seated...another good sign. And the plethora of awards they have covering their A-frame walls helps solidify the decision to eat a meal. My son had the sesame chicken, I had the orange chicken, and my dad got his regular order of green curry with shrimp. Um...my son and I live out of town, and no disrespect to our favorite spots in our hometown, but this beat out all options in our town. It was absolutely incredible. The chicken was cooked to perfection, the veggies on my son's plate (which became my plate) were crisp and bright...making it look AND taste delicious, and my dads meal was to his liking (if you like shrimp! ). It was heart-warming to see the staff recognize and greet my dad, and I can see why this is one of his favorite (and regular) places to eat! Originally being from the Texas Panhandle/South Plains, I was in Amarillo a lot in the past. Long before I was writing Yelp reviews I would come to this restaurant every time I came to Amarillo. Recently, I returned to the area to visit and upon arriving in Amarillo around lunch time after a 10 hour drive, I headed straight here. I've seen a few reviews saying that people may be put off by the exterior but after having come here so many times I find it endearing and authentic. The parking lot is small and so is the dining area. This place gets packed but luckily on both counts I've never had to wait. I like everything about this place, from the decorations to the ambiance, it feels very vibrant. The staff is super friendly and the guy running the front area and wait staff, is one of the most outgoing, gregarious people I've ever met. The food quite simply is amazing! Over the years I've had almost every sushi roll or sashimi here and have never left disappointed. The Thai food is bursting with authentic flavor and incredibly delicious and as spicy as you desire. I've been living in Houston for a while now and I would still put the Thai food at Bangkok Tokyo on that upper echelon tier with some of the restaurants in the area. While traveling home to TN, decided to give Bangkok Tokyo a try. Ordered the Gyoza dumplings and the Black Tiger Roll. Tired from traveling 14hrs I took it to go. Best sushi I've had in Texas so far. The roll was fresh as were the dumplings and the sauces delicious. Sorry no pics this time but wish they were closer to home! This place was busy and the staff were so friendly and attentive. Clearly, if you know any geography, you can figure out this place serves Thai AND sushi. Though I saw a lot of Thai dishes coming out of the kitchen (which indicates it's popular with someone), this review is about the sushi. The sushi here is stellar. Fresh, zingy and abundant. The rolls are huge. And I really appreciated how they were sliced rather thinly. I believe proper sushi etiquette is to put the whole piece in one's mouth at once, and here that is doable without choking. The hubs and I usually order two "boring" rolls (like tuna maki or spicy tuna maki) and two "fancy" rolls (with cream cheese or tempura shrimp or some rich ingredient). Our favorite here was the Tiger Tear roll which included jalapeño. Zing! We walked away very satisfied. The spicy edamame was worth the dollar upcharge, but I wouldn't pay extra for crunchy topping on a roll (now, fish roe, that's worth extra!) Service was accurate and super quick.
