Cagney's kitchen is located on the corner of two very busy roads but it was easier to access than I thought. It's very clean inside and everyone I encountered was very friendly. It's decorated like an old-time diner with very modern paintings on the wall for sale. Interesting juxtaposition. The waitress gave me two menus, the regular menu and a breakfast menu, but if you know me, I was only interested in breakfast (even though it was lunchtime). Online info says this place is famous for its omelettes so I had to try one. I ordered the sausage with cheese omelette with a side of grits and a biscuit. It came out faster than I thought it would. The omelette turned out to be the kind that I love, a thin layer of egg with ingredients rolled up inside like a pinwheel. I don't run across those very often and I always enjoy them. It was full of cheese and sausage and was quite enjoyable. The grits were excellent. The biscuit was more of a roll type than the standard country biscuit, but it was fresh and tasty. When I first walked in, I saw the daily specials and desserts listed on a chalkboard. I love carrot cake so I asked for a piece, thinking I'd get a nice little slice. The waitress brought it to me and I just about fainted - this slice of cake was almost a quarter of a cake. It was massive. I ended up eating maybe an eighth of it and asking for a box to take the rest home. It was a lovely, lovely carrot cake and I highly recommend it. As a side note, as I said it was lunchtime and the majority of the other diners were ordering more typical lunch food. The two ladies across from me ordered the daily special, pot roast. Now I am not much of a pot roast person, but this not only looked delicious, it smelled heavenly. I can only surmise that their regular food is just as good as their breakfast food. As someone who has judged hundreds of food entries over the years and eaten meatloaf at diners, cafes, and country restaurants all across the Triad, I can honestly say this was the worst meatloaf I've ever been served. I ordered the meatloaf special of the day, expecting a comforting Southern classic. Instead, I was met with a dense, mushy loaf topped with an overwhelming layer of ketchup. The texture was unpleasant, the flavor was one-dimensional, and the overall dish was simply not enjoyable. The mashed potatoes were equally disappointing. They tasted like instant potatoes straight from a box with little seasoning and no richness. The green beans appeared to come directly from a can and even contained a few hard pieces that should have never made it to the table. The cucumber salad was far sweeter than it should have been, overpowering any fresh cucumber flavor. Worse, the cucumbers themselves appeared visibly old and lacked the crispness that makes a cucumber salad refreshing. The cornbread was another miss. It was so dry and sponge-like that it practically absorbed all moisture the moment it hit your mouth. To be fair, the vegetable soup was the bright spot of the meal. It had good flavor and tasted homemade. The drinks were also good, and the service was friendly and attentive throughout the visit. The dining room itself felt very cramped, which added to an already underwhelming experience. I understand that everyone has different tastes, but after years of evaluating food and countless meals throughout the Triad, this was one of the most disappointing restaurant meals I've had in recent memory. I ate breakfast here with a friend on August 26. The food was good, and we enjoyed our meals; however, our visit was ruined at the end. We had been seated at our table for less than an hour . We were sitting and talking after finishing our food when our waitress walked up, abruptly grabbed our checks and told us we needed to cash out. She was holding our checks so I asked her if we needed to pay at the cash register, like we always did. She offered to take our money to the register for us. We allowed her to do so. When she returned, we promptly left. Pushing paying customers out the door in under an hour is incredibly rude and unprofessional. We felt rushed and completely unwelcome. We came here about 10:30am on a Sunday. We were looking for someplace different to check out and my wife found this place. Cagney's Kitchen is a small chain in the Winston-Salem area consisting of about 10 locations. Some are just Cagney's Kitchens, some are Cagney's Kitchen and Pizzeria and some are Cagney's Kitchen, Pizzeria and BBQ. This location is simply a Cagney's Kitchen. This restaurant is in what I believe is normally a pretty busy area near the hospital. On a Sunday morning, not so much. However, when we arrived it was apparent Cagney's was busy. The parking lot is small, tight and was very close to full but we found a spot. The entry is covered and opens to the dining area and host counter. The inside appears very cramped and dated but everything appears to be clean. We were seated promptly in a small two person booth, provided menus and offered drinks. We checked out the menu which was pretty basic but included about everything you might normally want for breakfast. My wife decided to get the farmers omelet with no cheese, a side of gravy for me and a biscuit. I chose the chicken fried steak and eggs with wheat toast. Our food arrived promptly and looked good and hit the spot. My wife really enjoyed her meal and thought the flavor of the omelet and the flakey biscuit was delicious. The chicken fried steak hit the spot for me as well. If you are looking for a diner type experience this fits the bill, nothing fancy but the food is solid and the prices are right. read more

Well, my husband has regular breakfast meetings here before work, but it has been a hot minute since I've been. I have been wanting some reliable, good diner food for a few weeks and my fave place close to the house is only open during breakfast and lunch hours, which does not help when the dinner hour rolls around. We made it there last night with our two teenage boys. It took several minutes to go through the whole menu - they have two! One for only breakfast items and one for all the other goodness. We all ended up getting sucked into breakfast-y goodness mode and were so happy with our choices. Huge, fluffy pancakes, a perfectly cooked omelette, big and soft biscuits various hash brown incarnations and grits...y'all. It was exactly what I have been wanting. That step between Waffle House and Midtown Cafe. Our server was friendly and quick. It's a cozy atmosphere. Maybe a little outdated regarding decor, but that made it seem more charming to me. My family has been BIG fans of this Cagney's location for years. They are the classic breakfast diner with consistently great food and service. My favorite is the French Toast breakfast special. It comes with eggs and your choice of meat. It is the perfect size and always cooked to order. If you like biscuits, you'll definitely want to give theirs a try. Also, the coffee is always fresh. The staff at this location is very personable, prompt and attentive. Heads up: 1.) the parking lot can get a little tight. Be sure to check the parking spaces on the side and in the back. 2.) I felt a little rushed, because she gave the receipt well before I was done, or even half done, but her demeanor was nice. The flounder had a really mild light flavor. My child could eat breakfast 3 meals a day so I love to find places where he can get breakfast later in the day. Cagney's was the perfect spot for us to have lunch together. My son had a chocolate chip pancake and biscuit. He was a very happy kid because both items were delicious. I had the patty melt and a side salad. The patty melt was delicious. The patty was flavorful and not dry so I would get it or another burger again. The salad was fresh and came with plenty of dressing. Our server made it a 5-star experience. She was so sweet and when I asked about the chicken salad she brought me a sample. It was also tasty so I would order it in the future. The manager was nice and checked on everyone. I reviewed Cagney's a few years ago and gave it 5 stars. Since then the management has changed and it has gone downhill. My husband ordered a Philly Sub and asked to substitute mushrooms instead of onions. We asked if there would be an uncharge. The waitress said "yes, 30 cents." We thought that was a good ideal but when the bill came they charged us $1 for the mushrooms and gave us no credit for skipping the onions. The management said the waitress was new and didn't know. Instead of standing by what we had been told, they did nothing. The cashier was also quite rude and clearly unfriendly. My dish, Manicotti, was supposed to come with salad and a side and the side never came. I didn't think about it until I came home and realized it never came. We came rather late (an hour before closing) and while we were finishing dinner the noise level rose greatly. The waitresses were chatting to each other in quite loud voices as if there were no customers (there was one other table of 6 still there), they were slamming chairs around cleaning up, they even turned off the nice music on the radio. I asked the waitress about what happened to the music but she did nothing. The food was ok though often on the greasy side, but the ambiance was unacceptable. The prices also have gone up disproportionately to other restaurants. In the past we often went there twice a week because the prices were reasonable and the food was ok but quit going because the grease level was just too high. We tried it again this week and after our bad experience my husband and I both decided we won't be going back. read more

A couple of friends and I had a late lunch at Cagney's Kitchen. The place looks nice, and the decorations take you back to a time past. The first thing I noticed was how hot it was in the restaurant. I don't know if it is always like that or not. I know it was extremely hot outside, so maybe that was the reason. The service was prompt, and the food was good. I had a vegetable plate. The only thing I didn't like was the presentation of the mashed potatoes. You could tell that they were scooped out with an ice cream scooper. Other than that, everything was fine. The location on Cloverdale Rd had a bad review about a customer with a service dog being berated and excluded by management. I would give a good review for the Old Salisbury Rd location of Cagney's kitchen which had great food and fantastic service from the young waitress. The omeletes were very good and just the right size. The amount of fancy was a perfect fit. I had the gravy (spelled gray on the menu due to a type) and a biscuit. The gravy didnt have much flavor and would have benefited from spice and more sausage chunks, or some mushrooms. The side of fruit wasn't fresh but it was just fine. I'm originally from Winston-Salem and currently live in Raleigh, but my parents are still here so I come to town every once in a while and have been here a few times for breakfast with my parents. I love breakfast food and can eat it any time of the day honestly, but I usually like it pretty simple (eggs, bacon/sausage, hashbrowns) so this place is a great place to come for that. I usually get the 2 egg option with either bacon or smoked sausage and shredded hashbrowns (I'm a bit picky about chunky since I like my potatoes to be crispy so I stick with shredded just to be safe). On this most recent visit I ordered the make-your-own omelette with 5 items (bacon, sausage, sauteed spinach, American cheese, and onions) and shredded hashbrowns (I chose to not get any bread, but you have the option of toast or biscuit). All of this for only $6.95 and a pretty nice size omelette as well! I'm not a coffee drinker, but my mom is and she said that the coffee was really good and I also heard other diners mention that the coffee was good as well. I can't believe it took me all these years to visit Cagney's at Cloverdale! This location is right outside of Ardmore and literally just became my new go-to breakfast spot. We breezed right in on Black Friday morning for a quick breakfast. The service was fast and efficient. The menu is your typical diner style breakfast which is just what we were looking for! We were visiting a family member at Baptist hospital on Friday night, April 1, 2022 and were looking for takeout dinner close to the hospital. We called and Cagney's said it would be ready in fifteen minutes and it was ready when I arrived. My brother-in-law and I both enjoyed our country fried steak with mashed potatoes and green beans. The steak was crispy and they packaged the gravy in a container so it wouldn't spill. My sister seemed to enjoy her meatball sub and homemade chips.
