I think this place is one of the most underrated Korean establishments in Ellicott City. I have been coming here since I was a teenager but I didn't take notice until a few years ago how delicious their menu items were (in the past this used to feel more like a bar). They renovated several years ago and changed around the theme a bit and now it has a more homier feel to it. Reminds me of certain hole in the wall and unassuming places in Korea that I've been to in years past and I love it. Honestly, my rating may be closer to a 4 or 4.5 since not everything I have tried here is amazing, but the things they do well compensate for all that. Most of the things I have tried here are freaking delicious and they really know how to deliver when you ask for things spicy. There spice meter runs from 1-4 and our server tried to scare us away from ordering level 4 cautioning that many in the past were not able to finish their meals and they do not take food back after it's been ordered, but our group has a high tolerance and we were loving it. We were sweating and panting like dogs but it made for a great time. If you are not used to eating extremely spicy foods (ie. thai chili or authentic Indian food spicy) I would not recommend ordering anything at a level 4. You will pay for it later if you know what I mean muhuhaha. Some of my absolute favorite dishes here are the spicy pigs feet (yes, it sounds gross but I don't care I suck on those little pig feet bones like it's my job), sujaebi- which is basically pieces of doughy flour in a savory soup and rabokki- spicy rice cakes with fish cakes and ramen noodles (this is a variation with noodles..you can also order them without). And the thing is I usually never order rabokki when I go out because it's so easy to make at home but for some reason I do gravitate toward the one they make here. It's not mindblowing but it's pretty darn good. There are so many more dishes I love here and others I haven't tried yet but it's my goal to try every single thing on the menu here but it's one of my favorite places in EC. I also hear the strawberry makkeolli is amazing (flavored rice wine) so if you drink alcohol do give that a try. I'm sure it won't disappoint. It blows my mind that at most times there is only one server in the whole place. I mean, I know the restaurant is small, but geez they have the server running ragged! Last time I was there my favorite server (younger guy) was seriously on point. He was running the entire establishment basically by himself but somehow managed to keep everything including our drinking glasses, side dishes and napkins refilled all night. Mind you there is a small button that you can press if you need service but for goodness sake don't be that jerk that presses the button every 2 mins lol. For the uninitiated, Ellicott City (pronounced by old Korean people as Ellie Coat Shitty) is the suburban MD version of Koreandale: Honeypig + Shin Chon for your KBBQ, Tutti Frutti for your KFroYo, and Rainpia & Miga for your fried chicken and beer. Food - it might seem logical to compare Rainpia and Bon Chon but the two are totally different fried beasts. Bon Chon has super crispy skin laced with crack sauce; Rainpia serves tong dak (Korean-style fried chicken). For $17, the portion size, which is basically one small chicken chopped into small pieces, breaded, and fried, is unacceptable. The average male should be able to finish at least 3/4 of one order. For comparison, you can get 22 pieces of chicken at Popeye's for about the same price (incl. tax + tip), and there are few men who can finish even 15 pieces of Popeye's in one sitting. They have the regular fried version or the sauced version ($2 more). The regular comes with a salt+pepper+paprika looking stuff for dipping. The skin is crispy and the chicken is perfectly fried - even the white meat is juicy. The sauced version, however, becomes VERY soggy. If you don't mind paying $2 for some subpar sauce, ask for it on the side. Other dishes are available and they are perfectly acceptable. They also have soju and Korean beer - Hite, Cass, and OB, oh my. Location - looks closed from outside but they are open late. They have picnic tables, so if you're in a party of 6 or 8, there will be several people straddling a large piece of wood. Exiting this shopping center is annoying. You have to drive around back and then head up the hill to the traffic light on Rte. 40. Service - Proficient in English to the point my friend was able to order a beer with no assistance. They also respond very well to a loud, "Juh gee yo!" If you're into tongdak with beer, and willing to pay a premium for it, Rainpia is a good option. read more

Been there twice and will keep going back. Not necessarily the closest fried chicken place for me to go but it worth the drive. Only tried their spicy fried chicken, spicy pig feet and spicy rice cake but I fell in love on the first bite. The spicy fried chicken were crispy and flavorful, fried and seasoned to perfection. Crunchy outside (but not doughy) and juicy inside. My all-time favorite tho is the spicy pig feet. Always been a big fan of pig feet and Rainpia just make it irresistible. The pig feet were prepared into bitable size, and they must have cooked it for a really longtime before the final touch in the pan cause they melts in your mouth and it need almost zero effort to get the meat off the bone. Because of the extra scallion, red pepper and roasted sesame seed on the top of the spicy sauce, the dish just become extra flavorful and satisfying. In terms of spicy level, I love the heat so we normally would order level 3 or 4 which is quite spicy tbh, but if you only enjoy mild spicy, level it down. Service is always great, very friendly, helpful and attentive. What I also appreciate about is they will not come and bother you frequently unless you ring the button on the table. They only operation from 5pm to 2 am over the week so come early or expect a long wait (reservation is only for groups bigger than 2). read more

If you are looking for late night tryst with fried chicken, consider going to Rainpia. They are open only from 5pm til 2am. Weird hours I must say. First I figured it was more like a bar but when you walk in, it is laid out like any other restaurant. Their claim to fame is fried chicken. They have the "Korean" style fried chicken where it is served with special seasoned salt. The salt is a mixture of salt (duh) and pepper grounded to fine powder like consistency. They also have the pickled radish accompanying the chicken (oh so yummy). I also ordered barbecue chicken and that was good as well. I had them carried out and while it was still pretty good, I'm sure it would have been better had I ate in the restaurant. The carryout containers didn't have proper vents (like those used by Hooters) so by the time I got home, they were kind of soggy. I don't exactly know what the name Rainpia means since it doesn't seem like it has any meaning in English and it sure don't have any meaning in Korean. They serve an array of different items but their chicken came recommended and that's what I ordered. Apparently they have ddukbokki as well and I'm dying to find out how it is. If you get to try it before I do, let me know if it's worth the trip to EC. They seem to specialize in 'Anju' (a term used for food Korean people eat while drinking alcoholic beverages) so be aware. read more

Howard County's tourism bureau inspired us to walk into a place that looks like a strip club, but serves up splendid fried chicken. Rainpia in the Bethany 40 shopping center on Rte 40 has papered over its windows, so I never knew what was happening inside when I drove past en route to Mirocjo or Bethany Seafood. I never even caught the name. But one of the HC Tourism folks emailed me last week, and some questions about Rainpia led to a quick turn here on Yelp, which led to the reviews about Korean fried chicken. Which led to me pushing open Rainpia's door while my wife skeptically wondered what we were going to see inside. It looks like a brightly-lit bar. Seriously brightly-lit and tricked out with a casual, outdoor feel. Wood paneling on every wall. A long two-sided bar down the center with about 22 seats. Then "booths" along each side made by setting picnic tables and separating them with rough screens. (There is also a television over the actual bar showing Korean television. At the instant we walked in, the scene was a man and woman in bed, and -- just for that instant -- my wife thought, "That's going to be porn." It turned out to be nothing.) The fried chicken is absolutely exceptional. Burn your fingertips hot. Lick your fingertips delicious. We split a single "mixed" order, so we got 10 bone-in pieces -- half crunchy regular and half dunked into a sweet sauce. They're both delicious. Even the white meat is juicy, and they come with pickled radish that serves as a perfect crunchy counterpoint to fried chicken. The pieces are chunks bigger than a nugget, but smaller than a full drumstick or breast. I loved the ratio of crust to meat. Every bite had both, which actually helps Rainpia edge out my local favorite Chick N' Friends that serves standard breasts, wings, etc. Chick N' Friends in the Long Reach Village Center is great take out. Rainpia is really aimed at the drinking crowd. We got fine service even though we just ate, but the menu and the crowd were clearly more in line with a place like Looney's or T-Bonz Grille than the barbecue dinner crowd at Shin Chon Garden. The chicken would have been perfect for a night of beers and a table of friends. At $16-18, an order of chicken isn't cheap. But we split one order for dinner, and the small pieces lend themselves to sharing. If you want a "wings and beer night," Rainpia is the perfect variation on wings. Because I'm joking about strip clubs, I want to emphasize that Rainpia is a restaurant. Super-well lit. No smoking inside. A waiter who answered all kinds of questions. I'd send a "girls night out" to Rainpia in a minute as long as the girls drink beer or soju, a Korean wine in the same family as sake. It's not a margarita bar. It's not a place where you can Twitter about the craft beers you're drinking. But you can get basic bottled beer plus some Korean brands, and the fried chicken is a treat. Also, there is a long translated menu of Korean dishes like fish cakes, stews, and stirfries. I'd love any recommendations, and my next trip will include the tuna and kimchi stew, which sounded terrific. read more

Went here for a late night dinner on a Monday night, and it was packed! Definitely a popular late night spot. We had the half and half chicken and seafood pancake. The chicken quality was really good, compared to the other fried chicken spots; was not the biggest fan of the seasoning, but the quality won me over. The seafood pancake was okay, different from what I'm used to. Surprisingly enough we got the chicken before the seafood pancake, because there was a big rush when we came. I've been coming to this restaurant for years and it hasn't disappointed me once! Service is always fast and food is delicious! Staff are always friendly and accommodating your needs. Some of my favorite dishes are spicy pig feet (jokbal), broiled pork belly (bossam), spicy Korean chicken stew (dakdoritang), boneless or bone-in fried chicken or any kind of Korean pancakes, just to name a few. Love the atmosphere every time I go there, but the place does get crowded especially on the weekends. So, be prepared to have some wait time, but it's worth the wait! The soup wasn't anything spectacular but sufficed to go along with the soju. The chicken was better than expected. Crispy fried outside and juicy on the inside. The sizes are your typical buffalo wings size. The sauce was very well seasoned -a little sweet and a little spicy. Service: There are buttons on each table to ring for a waiter/waitress but server was still slow. It took about 20 minutes for the mussel soup to come out, which is way too long. Overall: I noticed that prices are a little higher than a typical Korean drinking establishment in Virginia (Annandale/Centreville). When I first got there it was bigger than it appeared on the outside, it has a very comfortable environment, has a environment that make you feel like you are at a park during dusk. it has a cute seating area, a large table for around 20 people and cute seating booths which could fit 6 people. There was only one server working on a Monday night, he was kind and cool, but could not pay too much attention since he was the only one, but we understand. But the time we had to wait for our food could be a little better. We ordered fried dumplings, spicy cheese rice cake, and ban ban chicken. The dumplings were yummy, but the chicken was way too soggy and was very hard and annoying to eat because of the bones. The spicy rice cakes was meh, nothing really worth mentioning. So overall their food was okay, but it is a great place just to hang out with a couple of your friends. The service was good for one guy. My go-to place in the area when craving authentic Korean fried chicken. If anyone ever wants a true Korean dining experience that includes the atmosphere, I suggest this place and their chicken. The fried chicken is undoubtedly the reason why I come here. It is exceptional; very tasty without it being too greasy. I usually get it covered in the sauce they offer and it's by far one of my favorite Korean dishes. I've tried most of their soups and "jigaes" and I find all of them pretty good as well. Their serving sizes are quite average.... which wouldn't be a big deal if it wasn't for the price. My only complaint is that it is a bit pricey, but they do have happy hour deals during the week days and I usually take advantage of it. The service is quite accommodating and certainly meets your normal dining needs. The restaurant isn't very big and can get crowded/loud during peak hours which are late at night. Majority of their tables are booths that can seat up to 5 or 6 comfortably, and they have one long table that extends down the middle of the restaurant for bigger parties. Quite decent. The food here is pretty good, but not the best I've ever had (what can I say, I'm from LA!). The seasoned wings were not soggy as other have mentioned before, the ddukbokki was pretty good, the soup that came with it was also good, but quite spicy, and the seafood pancake was actually better than that of Honeypig's! We spent around the same amount of money we would have spent at Honeypig, and drank/ate a lot more. I would not recommend the strawberry soju, but have yet to try the other flavors. Came w everything on the side(green onions, sweet sauce, sauce for the green onion mix) salt n pepper packet. 2 big containers for the radish. We live 2 min away and the fried chicken was not crispy when we unpacked it. The fried chicken isn't seasoned just plain. Are we suppose to season it ourselves with the salt n pepper packet it came with? Makes no sense since it wont stick to the chicken. You either season the chicken and fry it . The Korean fried chicken here is decent, and it is as good as any restaurant in this area. There aren't many fried chicken locations in Elliott city even though it is known as a Korea town. The seating, in my opinion, isn't that good for anyone with long legs as your leg will keep bumping into the table. The chicken is definitely overpriced for the amount you are getting. My go-to drinking spot! I'm a regular here and I frequent this location not only for casual drinks, but also for their food. I've tried a good number of items on their menu and not one has disappointed me! My favorites would have to be the fried chicken and spicy dough soup ( ). I get it almost every single time. They also serve all types of alcohol from flavored soju to beer to rice wine. They even occasionally have special items from Korea. I recently tried "calamansi" (), which is basically a citrus-flavored juice that you squeeze into a bottle of soju to flavor it, but conserve the alcohol content. It's super popular in Korea so I was surprised to find it here. I heard it's in limited supply, so get it while you can! As for the interior, it's traditional, but it's cozy and comfortable. I always gravitate towards coming here because I don't like places that are too dark-lit, which seems to be the theme at other nearby korean bars. I'm a regular at Rainpia and it's almost always busy here. This is one of the hot spots for korean bars in the Ellicott City area. I've been here countless times for dinner, night out or friends birthdays. They do take reservations for big parties so if you have a birthday you should consider coming here! The waiters are also super friendly and service is great. This is kind of rare with korean restaurants especially if you are younger. Other restaurants have a tendency of ignoring you or being super rude but not Rainpia. Best part is there is not a single thing that I've eaten here before that I didn't like. My favorites are the padak and dakgangjung. No matter how many times I eat it, I never get sick of it. The hwachae is amazing. I've tried it at other places and nowhere else can compare. read more

We've had the same waiter both times we've eaten here and he not only remembered us but also remembered our preferred spiciness level for our fried chicken. That brings me to the chicken... There are many great Korean restaurants in E.C, but this one recently caught my eyes because I wanted to go somewhere I could have great Korean bar food in little less crowded bar setting. When I walked in, I was surprised by its quaint, rustic booths. I dug its vibe immediately. We got great service even though there was only one server (whom I actually think is a manager or the owner). He's efficient and very friendly. The second time i went there, he remembered me and my friend and even what we ordered! And the food was awesome! Try their spicy rice cakes with Ramen noodles. Okay lets talk about the area first, its right off route 40 around lots of food places, but on the side of the road where sonic and good will are. you can easily miss this place if you go fast enough. I walked in with two of my friends and we were immediately seated. Its not a big place but theres booth seatings with some tables and an island in the middle where you can sit and drink. This place is a bar and restaurant so its pretty busy. There were lots of people but they have cal buttons on the tables so if you need immediate attention they will give it to you. I ordered the beef brisket with green onions, the quality of meat was good but it was overpowered by the green onions like a bed of it was on top, but still good. My friends ordered the shrimp fried rice and ham fried rice, my one friend asked for no corn in the ham fried rice but it came with it, although not a big deal because she said it was delicious anyway. Overall the food was good the only reason im giving it a 4 is because it is kind of pricey for the portion size. But overall good experience. read more
