The soup was delicious too and full of substance. This isnt your watery soup. There was so much in the soup that you would be surprised or be like "yea, this is how a soup should be". I'm hoping to come back and update my review on this place. Although this experience was not inviting, I am not afraid to come back. We were visiting and a friend suggested we eat here. To come, I was very impressed by everything except the initial greetings. We were a group of girls and got a little loud and was told to keep it down per request of an older group next to us. The waitress who took order seems irritated with us already. That should have been a sign. However, I was very impressed with the food. Coming from California, the state of abundance of Asian foods, to review a place like this would be at least 4.5 stars. Their bon chon selections were good choices. Rice papers were given. Raw garlic and bean paste was not even demanded. It was given from the gecko. Fresh green lettuce and onion salad was there before everything else. What I loved most was the cute turtle grill plate! I was recommended shin chon via a friend, and I would say overall the experience is good but the slot it fills as a kbbq restaurant can be filled by competitors in the area. First thing my friend and I noticed was the small plate of meat we received for the bbq set. My friend even said "that's it?" When it was first brought out because it seemed like a meager portion. I just I'll say the sides they give are abundant, leaving us both full and satisfied, but most of our dinner was the veggies and banchan instead of meat. While that can be okay, at a premium price point I was a bit disappointed in the value. Seafood pancake was also good, being crispy and freshly made. However it lacked flavor and relied on a soy based dipping sauce to complete it. Service is impeccable, with the waiters assisting us before we could even think to ask for anything. Ambiance is also great, with a clean and quiet interior that makes for a pleasant eating experience. This place is an Ellicott City staple. One of the first Korean BBQ places that has remained for many years. Nestled at the end of the Lotte Shopping plaza; parking can be a little tough on the weekend and around dinner time. The interior hasn't changed much, but it is clean and well lit. Shin Chon is one the best places to get the full KBBQ experience with an abundance of banchan (side dishes). Other restaurants, while delicious, offer 2-4 banchans. Shin Chon gives at least 6. The flavor of meat is delicious, but quality and portion size is not consistent (or maybe with inflation, it's just gotten smaller). Which is sad to report, especially since the price has not changed. Even with this information, I will still come back for a satisfying meal. If you're not feeling up to the BBQ, they offer the classic soups, stews, and other dishes which are just as tasty. I recommend the Kimchi Jiggae and pajeon. Their mandu (dumplings) seem expensive, but the sizes are huge. Service is friendly, but they can get overwhelmed if it's busy. You'll have to be a little patient, but it is usually fast and efficient. read more

I came here on a Monday night and they were busy! We got a table right away. Note that if you are not doing korean BBQ, it will be easier to get a table. We opted in for their Galbi Dolsot Bibimbap which is their beef and veggie rice that comes in a stone pot. The rice gets a bit crunchy at the bottom and it also came with the gochujang sauce on the side (spocy, sweet sauce). The bibimbap came with a ton of assorted veggies and their beef. We also got their Terra and Kloud beer. One beer is enough for two people! The staff checked in on us and also were patient enough to wait for our other patron to arrive. This spot has been a staple for YEARS. A reliable spot to go when you miss the typical 9 pm dinner cut off.. however that no longer holds true. Sit down early and you'll avoid this true madness that we went through... We walked in @ 830 with a party of 10 ppl and 1 baby for Easter Dinner/Bday celebration. It was super confusing because some servers would insist "take your time" as another server asked us to move from our spot, mid conversation, so she could fit her trolley for dirty plates and glasses into our seating area to clear the table as if we were leaving. He was blocked in and couldn't get up as she kept clearing our table. We are visiting from New York and we wanted to go out for dinner and decided on a Korean barbecue restaurant, we had a Horrible experience waiter kept elbowing my wife, trying to cook our stuff and they had a giant rush to shut off the gas stove or lower it. I didn't realize until I got there today that I had actually walked them to this restaurant before they can get was The next door restaurant. I initially intended to order lunch here for my office but it was on one of their off days so I couldn't call to ask about delivery. I could not find them on any delivery app so I don't believe that they do offer delivery. 2 weeks later and a late morning start, had me in need for lunch so of course I took the perfect opportunity to order with them. Like all of us Yelpers, we look at a menu on Yelp and pictures sometimes weeks ahead of time. I already knew I wanted to order their Gabby box so I called to place my order and shortly went to pick it up. I was not expecting a whole bag of food but was overjoyed when it was brought to me. I didn't have the full sit down experience but I did get all of bon chon, see the pictures. I appreciate it the extra care they took to making sure the BonChon didn't get mixed together. They added aluminum foil within the separated compartments and also placed plastic wrap on the top before closing the container. They got extra points for this. The only negative thing is informing me it would take 20 minutes to prepare. However my meat was not hot although it had aluminum foil underneath. Visited Shin Chon to celebrate a big day for both myself and my family. We arrived around noon. I was surprised how packed the restaurant was so early in the day. Nonetheless, we were seated quickly. The ambiance was comfortable, definitely a family-friendly restaurant. The staff was very friendly and attentive. We literally had someone coming to our table consistently bringing food, drinks or cooking our food on the grill. I couldn't believe the amount of food we were serviced. We started with the dumping which were very good. As our main course, we had the bulgogi and the spicy pork belly and octopus. The octopus was a little touch, but it was good. I really enjoyed the bulgogi the most, it is really one of my favorite dishes. An all around great dining experience. Definitely adding Shin Chon to the list of my favorite Korean restaurants. We were feeling in the mood for some Korean comfort food on a cold breezy day, so we decided to head to Shin Chon in Ellicott City. We were seated immediately asked if we wanted BBQ or not, and we said no BBQ and immediately taken to a table without a built-in grill. There were lots of tables with grills available around us though, but the smoke exhaust tubes and hoods worked very well as we didn't any smoke wafting over to our area at all. We decided to try something different and went for a "casserole" called Boodae Jun Gol...but I would better describe it as a premade full hotpot that came out on our own tabletop burner. The waitress even helped to finish off the casserole and served us our first bowls, ensuring we got plenty of ramen, spam, sliced hot dog, cabbage and that oh so spicy beef broth. It was so warming and comforting and it was just what we needed! I think we will be coming back again and trying the BBQ next time because the service is just amazing. Shinchon is regarded by many as the peak of kbbq in the area. I am inclined to agree. This is not ayce quality nor is it ayce price. Quality cuts with texture and flavor to match is what you can expect. We ordered a selection of meats, with galbi definitely being the star of the show. You can gnaw on the rib bone after too. She put the brisket on the grill and took a long time to return so I put the Galbi on the grill myself not knowing if she would return. Shortly after, she returns and says they do it. I don't like the layout of the restaurant because they are sectioned and I feel that servers can't see as easily when you want to wave them down. I prefer an open layout. So on top of not checking on us, she messed up my order. I asked for bulgogi and she gave me Galbi. It's been a long time since I've had bulgogi so when she brought out the Galbi, I didn't know. When we placed our order, she read it back to us so she really messed up. My husband only discovered the mistake when he went to pay the bill. He pointed to our table and said we got the brisket and bulgogi and she corrected and said it was Galbi, not bulgogi. We had to pay an extra $11 for a mistake our server made. She should have eaten up the difference. My husband didn't cause a fuss since I liked the Galbi, but if it were me I would have fought the bill based on the principle. At the very least, she should have apologized. Final thoughts: Delicious food, but not good service. I've been going here for a long time since I was in high school. Now that I live further away, I don't get to go often but had a chance to pick up some food from here. I opted for the spicy short rib soup (Galbi tang). It was so good. The spice is mild for those that can't handle spice too well. It was flavorful and had a ton of noodles, scallions and 4-5 big pieces of short rib! The dish cost $18.95 which can be seen a bit on the high side but I think it was worth it. Since I got it to go, they provided me a small plate of sides (banchan) with an assortment of kimchi, garlic stems, bean sprouts and broccoli. When I went in, it was so packed! With almost every table filled so I would recommend that you make a reservation. They do have larger spaces that can accommodate a large crowd or big family. While there is plenty of parking available, the layout of the lot can be dangerous with a lot of drivers not looking or aware of others coming from other directions so please do be careful!! read more

Everything you would expect is on the menu and is well prepared. Great banchan! Obviously everyone has their own preferences but I enjoy the Galbi and joomulluck galbi at this restaurant. It has a much more traditional ambiance compared to other KBBQ spots, and they give plenty of side dishes as expected from a true Korean establishment! The meats are great, and prices are reasonable.
