I have purchased sweets here and try to stop by every time I'm in Houston on the way back to Dallas. Their Gulab Jaman are amazing. I have yet to find anything better in DFW. Their quality has gone significantly down over the years, which is a shame. We have been going there for maybe 24 years. Their chaat was all plain yoghurt with a few onions and chickpeas thrown on top, with no spice or taste (go across the street to Bismilla Cafe if you want really good Chaat btw). The women working behind the counter at Raja are always on the rude side, and are really irritated when you ask for extra chutney. I bought $15 worth of snacks (pakora and samosa)and all they give is two small containers of chutney! This is definitely not a service with a smile kinda place. The potato samosa have mostly potatoes as filling, and not much of anything else, and definitely no spice (see photo). If you want to try a good samosa, head on over to Aga's or Bismilla! Lastly, the pink and green burfee was super gritty with sugar. Habshi halwa (a dark brown mithai similar looking to burfee in shape) had a very off putting aftertaste , almost like something was burnt in the process of making it. High ratings for their spicy samosas alone. Where most other places carry ones that have sort of a yellow potato filling, this place reveals a reddish colour from the amount of chiles that they use. I like to pick up about half a dozen for the week every time I eat next door at Shri Balaji Bhavan. Now I understand why Indian desserts are so rich and sweet. When I ask many of my Indian friends what's a good Indian restaurant to eat at, the usual reply is "I don't know, we eat my mom's cooking at home" which irritates me to no end. Occasionally, they'll mention an exception, Raja's Sweets, particularly for gulab jamun. Having heard Andrew Zimmern's Bizarre Foods show on the Travel Channel stopped by and featured Raja Sweets recently, decided to swing by. Decor inside is plain, nothing special, similar to Shri Balaji Bhavan next door. Step up to the counter and there's all sorts of desserts to pick from. I'm only familiar with gulab jamun and grabbed a few. For those who don't know what this delicacy is, it's diabetes packaged in a ball. It's like a donut ball drowned in syrup, but so much better and sweeter. None of my friends and family eat this out of fear of diabetes. I love it. Being a newbie here, I was asked how many pounds of gulab jamun I wanted, I replied 1/4 pound. She laughed and said that's half a ball lol. Rookie mistake. Ok. This is an adorable cafe. Prices are amazing!! And I love that they have sweet and savory. Also, for a novice, you can really try a lot of things in good portions. The goat meat curry and the chicken makhni was off the hook. The meat was tender and lean which is a huge differentiator from a lot of restaurants in this area. I have only been here twice but man I love their sweets. Almond Barfi ! Barfi! Barfi! It is made with full-cream powdered milk and heavy cream. What else did I try there. Oh their Gulab Jaman (Kala Jamun). Its different than most of the Gulab Jamun you eat at different restaurants , its real dark in color and not as sweet as the regular Jamun. To try out and learn about the Indian desserts, the boyfriend brought home a box of mixed sweets that included cham cham, Rasgulla, Gulab Jamun, etc., and I just couldn't stop scrolling up and down the list of Indian sweets and desserts on Wikipedia while sampling the sweet treats! hahaa it was fun! In conclusion, the sweet treats tasted pretty interesting yet very similar to one another because most of which were made of sugar, flour, coconut flakes and milk even though they came in various colors and different shapes. Sometimes the snackfood (pakoras, samosas, etc.) can be a little bit cold, but hey, just ask them to warm those things up for you. A tip: If you are ordering snackfood to go, order to the nearest HALF-pound and you may get a little bit more bang for your buck. The Pakora was scrumptious, there's nothing like some good ole deep fried vegetables. Makes me feel like I'm getting back at the system when I eat fried, healthy stuff. I sampled a piece of the Chaat, which is a deep fried, mildly spicy wheat flour bread. I could have easily just eaten these 3 things but that's totally not how I roll. We tried 2 meals: the Chicken Curry with Rice and Chick peas, and the Lentils with Naan and Cauliflower. he chicken was juicy and flavorful, the lentils were perfectly seasoned and the rice was tender and had the perfect hint of jasmine. However, they do have a fewer variety than Bombay Sweets, but the venue itself is nicer and more well kept. Their jalebi is to die for and their barfis are heavenly! The price is reasonable. I really miss having this place closer to me. We used to grab food here at least once a week when we lived in the city. The food is authentic and plentiful. I can get 1 take out dish which they serve with the main course, vegetable and rice and it is enough for two of us to eat. They usually have 2 or 3 main meat dishes and 4 different vegetables to choose from. Today we got the Kofta Curry (beef meatballs), butter chicken and cauliflower in take out dishes and added two naan, there is enough food for 3 meals. They also have a wonderful selection of sweets. While I don't eat them I buy them for friends and family. I have a bit of hard time communicating because one of the ladies does not speak any English and when I'm trying order a mixed selection of my choosing she doesn't understand me.
