Was so so so excited to see that this place opened up in Toronto. I visited the Soho location when I visited NYC a few months prior and it was defs my favourite eat of the trip. The toronto location did not disappoint, I would say it's on par with the NY location. I would recommend getting there maybe 15 minutes before they open because it gets packed really fast. I wasn't super hungry and an app + a bowl of udon was the perfect portion to share. I tried the chikara udon this time and the broth was really great and rich but also nice and light. Modern and pretty decor that made me feel as though I'm in Japan. Less than half full when we arrived on a Sunday night. Didn't need to join the waitlist at all but its handy to have it in place to see how busy the restaurant is. We ordered the crab in thick egg soup ($22) and duck breast udon ($19). The noodles are very chewy and most importantly, their broth came scorching hot (love!). Perfect for a chilly day. Definitely more pricey than your average bowl of udon but then again, not the average quality. Would definitely come back to try other flavours when we're in the area. read more

Aha! I've been waiting for this place to open since more than two months ago! I used to go to this place all the time when I visited NYC and the chewy taste of the udon has been on my mind forever. I didn't know they were open yesterday but saw someone posting about this place today and I knew I had to come! I got the tatsuda age and the nikunan udon like always. The tatsuda age was so good and tasted just like the one in NYC. Crispy, delicious, juicy. Just the way it should be! The udon came soon too and the soup was so delicious. And of course, the noodles were just as chewy as always! Even the store was decorated like the ones in NYC--hidden in the middle of the street and decorated with wood. So. Stunning. Overall: Cozy, fast-paced restaurant with a unique selection of udon. Good taste, decent valie. Location: Queen street slightly west of Spadina. Price: Each appetizer or small dish is around $8-15. Plain udons are around $10, more fancy ones can go up to $22. Food: I was so excited to find plain cold dipping udon here ($10)! It was perfectly chewy and the sauce was well made. It even came with a quail egg which was interesting when mixed into the udon. We also shared monkfish liver ($8), chicken karage ($8/5 pieces), and bacon ($8). I'd say the bacon was the highlight, while the chicken was slightly dry with less dough compared to normal karages, and the liver was tiny. My friends ordered the nishin udon with Hokkaido herring ($17), which was quite good. It was sweetly pickled, and the soup wasn't too salty. The iced hojicha ($2) tasted a bit dilute, would probably not order again. Service: Waitstaff was appropriately polite and the food came in very good time with the appetizers coming first. Nowadays, new Japanese restaurants in Toronto are always ramen, ramen, ramen. But what about udon?! I would definitely recommend Raku's Udon if you like noodles and Japanese food! I've tried Raku in East Village New York and in Toronto. Both restaurants are very consistent aesthetically - they have a signature exterior consisting of a white wall and half covered door. I came the second day it opened and had the luck of meeting the owner, who is very nice! I tried the Donburi and my friends ordered the curry udon. Sometimes there a line up but the wait system is pretty organized; they take you phone number and call you. Wait staff are good and always available when you need them. The seating is tight but still a good distance between tables. I've been here many times and they have lots of options for everyone. I find their udon comforting and decent. One of our friends was researching on their NYC locations and found out that they recently opened in Toronto! We came on the third day it opened, on a Friday, and was surprised to see that there was no wait at the front. I used the Yelp wait list feature and my bf and I only waited 10 minutes for lunch (around 1:00pm on Thur). I ordered the egg drop soup with crab, and he ordered the shrimp tempura. He said he liked his noodles but he didn't like how "oystery" his soup was- but his soup just tasted like umame to me. My egg droup soup was DELICIOUS. I would say that for next time, I would (a) try tantan and then (b) get egg drop soup without the crab and just add a few extra toppings. To be honest, I think this place is overrated. I'm not saying the food is bad, but it was definitely just average. I ordered the unatama don (bbq eel rice bowl) and the ratios were completely off. There was a thin layer of eel/egg/onion, but underneath there was a TON of plain rice. By the end of my meal I was left with a bowl of plain rice that I couldn't finish. And yes, I did try to mix everything together but there was still too much rice and not enough of anything else. In general the rice bowl was kinda plain, I was expecting more of a savoury flavour but it tasted like there wasn't much seasoning. At least the fried chicken appetizer was good. Very popular restaurant so be prepared to wait, to avoid waiting go weekdays around noon or at 5:30. You can also check the wait time and join the waitlist on Yelp! Found that helpful. Been here twice and had the Gyunan, Tantan, Kani Ankake, Zaru, and Gyoza. Personal favourites are the Zaru and Kani. The Zaru was chilled udon noodles with dipping sauce. Noodles were cooked perfectly and made for a nice and refreshing dish on a hot day. The Kani on the other hand warmed the soul. The hearty soup consisted of a delish blend of egg and crab. I would get both of these again. The tantan udon soup was flavourful but on the spicier side so be prepared to sweat. We found the Gyunan and Gyoza pretty standard. I tried out the much-hyped Raku last Friday. Thanks to Yelp's waitlisting function (which I just used for the first time for this place LOL), I was able to wait at home instead of physically lining up outside the door! Note: expect a wait of more than an hour on Friday nights. I put myself on the list at 6:00pm and finally got seated at around 7:30pm. Now onto the food... For apps, we ordered the gyoza and the fried chicken. The gyoza was pretty good but my favourite was the fried chicken. It was so flavourful and the skin was very crispy. We only got 5 to share between 3 people but I think I could eat all of them myself haha! It's a bit on the spicy side so be aware if you can't take spice very well. The fried chicken is a must if you come here! For the Udons, I got the Gyunan udon which essentially is a beef soup udon. The beef was so delicious! I don't know how they cooked it but it was really tender. The udon noodles were very similar to the ones I had on a Japan trip and definitely different from the other places I've tried in Toronto. The owner/manager lady told us that the noodles were indeed from Japan! The soup itself is a bit too light for my taste but that's probably because my tastebuds were still tasting that fried chicken LOL. It's a nice soup though. My friends got the Crab Udon and the curry beef udon. Both of theirs were more flavourful than mine. The Crab udon is a bit spicy for my friend because there was a blob of spicy paste in it but I thought it was okay. The curry beef udon is similar to Gyunan except it's got a curry-based soup instead. I think I will try that one instead next time. I've been to Raku many times both in Toronto and NYC and can confidently say that it is probably the best udon spot in both cities (coming from a noodle fanatic this is saying a lot). Their standout item, though not a specific menu item, is definitely the udon noodles itself - it's just so slurp-worthy and bouncy that you just wish there were more noodles in the bowl! I always get their Niku udon and completely obsessed with it at this point but their crab and egg udon is another fan-favorite. In terms of apps, their fried chicken or oysters are a great way to start the meal. I haven't noticed many differences in the Toronto location vs NYC ones so quality control is pretty good. The only reason I'm not giving it 5-stars is because the value is definitely not there. Paying close to $30 for a bowl of udon is definitely on the higher end of what I'd like to spend. All in all, a great spot for some comforting udon and big bowls of soup. read more

The place is small and clean with a row of bar seats. There is only 1 section with seating for 8-10. They have maybe 6 tables (seating 3-4 each). Food is good. The noodles are definitely really good. You probably say...how good can noodles be. I describe as you been drinking muddy water all your life and you tasted fresh clean water the first time. Skip the apps, they are average. Cold noodle come on a wooden plate and you dip in this refreshing sauce. Recommend Zaru for cold (100% add extra noodle - they are flown in from japan and you basically double the quantity). The springiest udon noodles that you can endlessly slurp live here at Raku. I wish there was a bottomless bowl of these noodles for me so I never have to stop. Their udon noodles are unique from the normal rounded noodles that you will find elsewhere. It is a more flat-ish ribbon. Their udon noodles are exclusive to Raku and no where else. They are prepared especially bby Japanese udon noodles experts and flown in straight from the land from udon. The restaurant storefront and interior feels like they plucked a store from Tokyo and plopped it right in the middle of the Queen West neighbourhood. It's a wonderful thing and I am so glad that Raku is here. The inside of a restaurant is cozy and everything about it reflects that Japanese sensibility. The cozy booths and bar seating, the quick service by the staff, and the way they let the food speak for itself. Their take on the karaage, the chicken tatsuta-age, is really awesome here. The chicken pieces are generously sized and they are juicy af when you take a bite. You can dip it into the slightly spicy mayo to add a little more spice to your life. I really had a hard time picking which udon bowl I wanted but eventually settled on the nameko due to my love of mushrooms. I couldn't resist trying nameko mushrooms flown in from Japan. The udon broth they use is really light and flavourful. The udon noodles really hold their own in the broth regardless of whether you are a fast or slow slurper. I ended up ordering a kaedama (extra serving of noodles) because I knew I was going to want to keep enjoying the experience. Simply put, the whole thing was delicious. I didn't even leave a drop of broth left in the bowl. Overall, Raku is a really welcome addition to the food scene here in Toronto and offer a very unique udon noodle experience. read more

Wow this place tastes so mediocre. And both my boyfriend and I felt a strong acidic aftertaste in our mouths afterwards, which is kind of like the feeling after eating extremely salty cheap Chinese food. It's also quite expensive for how mediocre it is. I would not recommend this place. Servers were very nice and efficient though. Taki Nasu (eggplant): it's just some minced meat on an eggplant. The flavour is not actually blended in the eggplant even after blending it together. One of the worst I've had. Gyoza: taste like any frozen Gyoza I could make at home. Unatama don (bbq eel don): tastes pretty good, like good local Japanese fast food level, but of course the cost here is no where close to fast food level Kani ankake (crab hot udon): it's not horrible but there is really just not much favour. The BEST udon noodles I have ever tasted. The broth was rich and flavourful. The noodles itself was cooked to perfection with a chewy texture that I love so much. It's a small restaurant with a cozy charm. I even love their ice cold green tea...super refreshing for the summer months. I am a huge fan. I live an hour plus away from this restaurant, but it's worth the drive in for their amazing udon noodles. I hate waiting for a table. I usually don't. But Raku I make the exception!!! I've anticipated the opening of this restaurant for some time now, and i'm happy to say that they're finally here in Toronto! Raku is known for their large variety of Japanese udon and comfort foods.  They bring fresh flavours and ingredients, so it's definitely a treat to have this well known shop from NYC open up here in Canada. Chicken Tatsuta-age: Marinated deep fried chicken, but not your typical karaage. Chicken thigh, fried in a light and flavourful batter.  I also love how they give you the option of having 5 or 10 pieces with each order. Spicy mayo was actually spicy and was a great compliment to the chicken. A go to starter in my opinion, but if deep fried chicken isn't your thing (even though it should be), their gyoza are made in house daily so I definitely recommend giving those a try as well. Tan Tan: Spicy miso pork, peanuts, egg and thin udon noodles. A really great twist to a traditional tan tan mian. This was both of our favourites. The broth is super flavourful and you can pick out the miso and the peanut flavours. Gyunan (not pictured): Washugyu beef, tokyo regi and thick udon noodles. Light but flavourful broth. Definitely not as heavy as my tartan. Love how it came with a healthy portion of greens as well. Overall, the noodles are the highlight of the dishes, they're cooked perfectly to give a nice chewy texture. Appetizers are affordable and I highly recommend adding a few to your meal. Thought the tempura was ok. Too oily to be enjoyed outside the soup, but far too soggy once placed in. The actual shrimps in the "Ebiten" bowl were delicious. Highly recommend their gyoza. I rarely give out 5 stars but this is a place that I would definitely want to go again and try other items on the menu. This is a place opened from New York, USA. Authentic decor. I ordered the traditional tempura shrimp hot udon $15, karage $8 (fried chicken) and jaja cold udon $15 (spicy minced pork, pouched egg, cucumber and tomato). The texture of those udon is very different from what I had from supermarket. Super chewy and more flat (it's even more thinly-sliced and flat when you have cold udon) it tastes like it's hand made. The portion is quite big, but fair size for one person. I can't stop eating it till the bottom. The cold udon is very refreshing. When you walk along queen street for the whole day in the summer time, it's a perfect spot to stop by for a cold udon. Hot udon is really good too. Although I ordered something classic, it didn't disappoint me. However, I think the tempura is a bit over-battered. The karage chicken is a bit disappointing tho. I thought the udon noodles were really good. They have different kinds for hot and cold. The hot udon were thicker, the cold were somewhat narrower. Neither were the chunky round tubular ones that are vacuum packed from the grocery store. These had such a nice chewy texture and even in the steaming hot broth, they didn't become total mush. How was my soup still hot to the last drop? I have no idea but it was thoroughly enjoyed. I highly recommend getting an extra portion of noodles (kaedama) if you have extra broth. I'd definitely go back and try other menu items. Use the Yelp app and get on the wait list if you're going during prime time lunch or dinner. If you go midday, there will be no line up. Raku will not disappoint you. The variety of the udon dishes offered here is mindblowing on its own. Other udon places I have seen don't offer these many options. I ended up ordering the niku udon, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised by the size of the bowl. The broth also turned out to be a little different from what I expected, but oh boy, this tasted very good. The beef itself also complemented the overall palate if the dish well. The udon noodles are super fresh and chewy. If you order the egg drop soup (Kani Ankake), do remember it's a thick soup and not the usual clear soup. Love the crab egg drop soup, it's light but have lots of crab pieces in it. I also added the grilled mochi in the soup and it's very different. Very chewy and stringy. You can also add tempura as a side, and their tempura is really good! The beef short rib and honeycomb (Niku) is also delicious, the soup and meats are both flavourful. Raku was nice. Their fantastically chewy noodles were the definitely the star! We had the nishin (herring) udon, cold zaru udon, and a smattering of appetizers. The iced hojicha was thoroughly disappointing. The hot broth was solid--simple with great flavour, and not too salty. The herring suprised me as it was sweetly marinated, which masks its quality. It came with a small amount of leafy greens. The zaru udon included a raw quail egg, negi, and shiitake. The dipping sauce was underwhelming. Definitely would have preferred grated ginger or daikon to be included. The noodle sizes differ between the zaru and nishin udons. Additional add-ins are priced steeply. The apps were standard fare. Overall decent food, however, with minimal ingredients, preparation, and service, it's definitely in the overpriced territory. And a heads up, if you're a meat-eater, you'll find the options quite lacking in that department. read more

Came here on a weekend night around 7:30 and it had a 30 ish minute wait. Recommend you joining via Yelp waitlist beforehand do you don't have to wait when you're here. It's located on Queen St so you can easily walk around the street and into the shoppers or loblaws to kill time. I ordered the curry beef udon and my boyfriend had the crab udon - both were really flavourful and the udon wasn't too soft, just right. My curry was rich and not too strong, but beware as it's super hot (in temperature) so don't be like me and burn your tongue. The beef was tender and absorbed the curry flavour but you could still taste the beef itself. I chose to add an onsen egg and it made the curry udon so much creamier - 10/10 recommend. My boyfriend's crab udon was so so good! The broth was thicker and reminded me of a Chinese egg drop soup in terms of consistency, but the flavour was so good and went well with the udon and other toppings. I can definitely see this place being the next trendy/instagrammable spot in Toronto! We got 2 apps, atsugiri bacon and the deep fried chicken (tatsuta-age). I preferred the chicken as the bacon was a bit salty for my liking! The udon bowls are huge! We got the Curry and Niku. The curry bowl was great. It had beef and just the right amount of curry thickness. The Niku has beef short-ribs and honeycomb tripe. Slightly on the sweet end but the meat was so tender and not gamey at all! Love the al dente noodles. We ordered poached eggs($2) and shiitake mushrooms($2). I wouldn't order the mushroom again, it was a single piece haha. The egg was cooked runny, Japanese style. Verdict: I'll be back --- I was trolling through google maps a few days ago and saw this place that I'd never noticed before. After pulling up pictures and seeing the entrance I was intrigued. So last week a friend of mine was in town and we decided to check this place out. We got there around 1 pm, and were on the wait list via yelp. We got seated right away, but the place was full the whole time we were there. When you swing by make sure you get on the wait list so you're not waiting too long to be seated. The place is small and cozy; felt very modern. There's only one small window at the front, and the experience is very different than other restaurants in the area. Now onto the food. We got the chicken tatsuta-age to start. The pieces were a decent size and the accompanying spicy mayo was fantastic. The chicken had a nice flavour, but might have been a little overcooked - it was a little on the dry side. Overall the starter was good, and I'd definitely get it again. I got the tantan, and the broth was phenomenal. The flavour was complex and you could really taste the peanut in the broth! The noodles and broth tasted incredibly fresh. The spinach and poached egg were both a great addition. The pork felt a little lost in the whole dish, but it was great whenever it showed up. My friend got the ebiten. It arrived with the shrimp tempura separated from the noodles ensuring the tempura didn't get soggy. The broth in this dish was clean and fresh, reminding me a little of chicken noodle soup. I'm disappointed in having to give them 3 stars cause I had high expectations for this place. I came here Sunday afternoon and luckily there was no line up. I got the tantan noodle (spicy pork) and asked to get it without peanuts. Their soup base has peanut butter mixed into it but they were able to not put in the peanuts. The first sip of the soup was love at first bite and the noodles had the right amount of chewiness. However with each bite, it got saltier and saltier...I gave up the last little bit. Raku is a pretty well known ramen restaurant, originally hailing from NYC. This, and the clean, minimalist, Instagram-able exterior means that you're looking at long wait time if you want to give this a try. Good news: it's going to be worth it. I strongly suggest that you get on the waitlist for Raku via Yelp. The time estimate is pretty accurate and you can join the waitlist as long as you're within 1km of the restaurant - good news for the folks who live downtown. I had the vegetable gyoza as an appetizer and the gyunan udon. The gyoza is pretty good. The exterior is very chewy, with good mouth-feel, but felt a little bland. The gyunan, however, was fantastic. The noodles are so incredibly chewy and satisfying. The broth was also flavourful and rich. As a big fan of pho, this dish reminded me of an up-scale, elevated version of it. I'd definitely give it a try. As long as you're wiling to wait in line, I'd check out Raku. You won't regret it. read more

Highly recommended by a friend, I came here to try their beef curry udon, my favourite kind of udon. When I went on a week day, it was still early and the restaurant was not opened yet. However, a short lineup had already formed before 12pm. I was lucky to be seated immediately. Somewhat surprised how small and cramped the restaurant was inside. I was seated by the entrance, and it was just really annoying how people and their belongings would brush my back. I really didn't appreciate that. Food wise, the beef curry udon was fantastic. It did not disappoint! The bowl seemed pretty steep, too. There were several pieces of Canadian prime beef, some spinach(?), and scallion. I loved the thick curry soup. I was glad that I did not order any sides other than a hot tea because I was so full afterwards. I'm pretty interested to try the other udon options available... Raku has always been my favourite udon place here, in Toronto.I loved and enjoyed their cold dipping udon. Me and my bf have ordered from here on ubereat multiple times throughout the pandemic. However, the most recent experience with them made me so shocked and furious that I decided to stop ordering from them. Took me so long to realize that Their food not only ridiculously overpriced, the quantity and quality of their food also do not match their price. All of their expensive hot udon are mostly soup with bit and pieces of minced meat. Picture below is their Ohitashi (simply boiled spinach), costed me 8 dollars on ubereat that took me 2 bites to finish. I can buy 2 bags of spinach with 8 dollars and boil it myself. Wow, words cannot describe how happy I was, to finally get to eat here. The udon is heavenly. I got the kani ankake udon, and my friends got the regular ankake udon, a cold hiyashi udon, and the kamonan (duck breast) udon. All of the dishes were fantastic. The umami flavour in my kani ankake udon was the stuff of dreams, and there was plenty of crab meat. The thickness of the hot soup and the wonderfully chewy noodles makes me think it'd be perfect during the winter (it was still amazing, even though it's summer now). Next time, I'd try an udon with a lighter broth. Cannot wait to try all the dishes, eventually!
