deceptive pricing. I noticed a sale price on an item I usually purchase. Regular price was $1.79, but on sale at 10 for $10. This was a canned item. Turned out some of the flavors were not on sale, so some of the cans were $1.79, some were only $1. How confusing! Intentionally misleading the consumer when the big bright tags do not specify which flavor or variety is on sale. And half the times the product on the shelf gets mixed around. When I brought the items back they wouldn't give me the difference as an overcharge, so now I won't bother shopping there at all. read more

Convenience was the reason I chose to shop at this store, because the customer service is non existent with most of their employees, not all. Its obvious this is just a job! This rude "manager" wars so bent on not providing customer service that I demanded a full refund and would never ever shop here again. Also, many times I've purchased food that was not fresh. Need to better mark the entrance off the one way street that is behind the Ralph's. I'm from out of town and it wasn't clearly marked and I almost got in an accident trying to get in there. Also ummmm WHERE is the underground parking mentioned on here? Had no idea, that also is not clearly marked. I did feel a little unsafe in the parking lot, especially after my brush with death and a rude city bus driver trying to get in the back entrance. I remember when the entire space of what is now Ralph's was an open field, and the Dance Warehouse was still in existence. We had been hearing for years that the D.W. and other businesses would be razed for the new Ralph's, which I thought was a terrible idea, but....once it opened, I found I was shopping there 4 times a week. It's perfectly convienant: very close to my gym, Spectrum, and the MTD. They always have what I want on sale (with my Ralph's card) and I especially LOVE the self-service checkout, because it's always faster than the cashiers, and some of the cashiers there are either really cold (Janet) or just plain psychopathic (Howard), so I love not having to deal with their surly ass, and I can be in and out in two minutes with self-checkout. They always have a person at self-checkout to help people and make sure people don't steal stuff, and most of them are really nice: Celia, Johanna (super cute) or Marla (unique and beautiful girl). And apparantly nobody besides me has noticed that the entrance of Ralph's was designed like a Sumerian temple to the god of agriculture, Kishcut. If you stand back and look at it, you can see clearly the eyes, nose, and the large curved arch that is the entrance is also the mouth, so when you walk into Ralph's you are walking into a temple of food. The safety and organization practiced at Ralphs stores in Santa Barbara and Goleta during this epidemic of world class disease demonstrates no conscious but certainly greed. The stores are a cesspool of potential germ ladened customers engaged in acts of bumper pool crowded into aisles caused by too few cashiers and lack of organized health supportive practice. Only two observable modifications were made. Blue crosses of making tape to denote 6 feet distance in lines and a piece of plastic at the cashier. The tape on the floor does nothing when 3-4 people are traversing in between the crosses; the plastic shield is hung over the register not at the desk where customers actually stand, converse and pay their bill. County Health needs to make a formal inquiry IN your store, not by phone with the outcome of forced closure if you cannot rectify the additions you are contributing to the covid statistics in our county. read more

At 6:30pm on a Wednesday, there should be more than 4 checkstands open. Why are three of those 4 checkstands express lanes?!? With all of those grocery stores closing in SB, you'd think Ralph's on Chapala would step up their game to get all of that business. Apparently not. So this Ralph's was just a block down from my hotel and we stopped in to grab a variety of snacks for the train ride back to San Diego... I usually go to the Von's up Chapalla or Cantwell's but gave this place a try. I'm sad that this Ralph's doesn't have a better rating! I walk here so maybe I'd be more disgruntled if I had to park. The location is pretty key, being a couple of blocks away from me so I can pop in whenever I need to. This Ralph's is huge and way cleaner than the other Ralph's nearer to upper state on de la vina. I love the selection, and the international aisles are abundant. I just wish there were more variety in the health and wellness categories: tea and supplements. Since I usually only have a couple of items I self check out or can use an Express lane so I haven't had many problems with check out. read more

This grocery store is always a great stop. It is a short walk from downtown and there is always good pricing with Ralphs Club on most items. It is large, but feels more like a neighborhood grocery store. The service is friendly and the lines go quick for the most part. read more

The Carrillo St, Santa Barbara Ralphs is the worst one around. I will never shop there again... the store is not as clean or organized as other Ralphs and the staff is not very friendly. The lack of service here is actually impressive. This is obviously one of those downtown locations that never improve because they'll always be able to push through doing the bare minimum. Last time I was here, I walked right up to the deli clerk, said hi, and started looking. Three people arrived, and rather than letting me go first since I'd been there, she told all of us to take a number. Everyone else was closer to the machine, so I didn't have time to get food on my break and went back to work hungry. I went back for the first time today, and after the clerk helped the woman directly in front of me, she immediately dodged eye contact with me and turned her back. Didn't even try to catch her attention. I'm just curious, from a business perspective, what the strategy is here. I used to go to this Ralph's store whenever we were visiting Santa Barbara but from now on I will boycott this store and tell my friends to do the same. I ordered my dad's 90th Birthday cake from the bakery. When I went in to pick it up, there was no one behind the bakery counter. A bakery attendant walked right by me and into the back behind the counter and completely ignored me until I said something. After I told her what I was picking up, she went to the back and brought the wrong cake. When she returned the second time, she had no cake in her hands "because the bakery manager let the order slip through the cracks." What? No cake for the party that was beginning in two hours?? I was livid! And when I went to speak with a manager, there was no manager working at that time. WTH? Not a great way to run your store. They need a new bakery manager, and a store manager or at least an assistant manager to be onsite at all times. I'm not a happy customer nor will I remain a customer of the SB Ralph's. read more

This was a good Ralph's location. I bought some organic blue tortilla chips, organic medium salsa and some organic soy nuts. I had never seen the nuts before because the Ralph's in Long Beach doesn't sell them. I couldn't find organic tofu at this location though. The saddest produce department I have ever seen. The produce space takes up a tiny part of a large store that is mostly filled with unhealthy, processed garbage. The frozen vegetarian items can be found in at least three different places and items that I like are sometimes not restocked or weirdly overpriced. The non-dairy creamers are mixed with dairy in two different places and of course unsweetened options are not stocked and if they were I am sure they would be overpriced for being healthy. Ralphs finally got it. Always somewhat hip to health consciousness, meaning that for about two decades they have devoted a third of an aisle to healthier food (now, of course it's much more), they now have begun to zone in on the real problem which they identify with their new credo: GET REAL WITH THE PRICE. I love it! Now, if they expanded the produce section a bit and began to challenge Trader Joe's directly, they might actually find the bonanza they've sought all these years. Having been vegetarian and what is today referred to a vegan, a European rubric, for nearly half a century, I cannot tell you how radically overpriced capitalist ventures, i.e., Whole Foods insult me to the core of my being. In Hawaii, for years, I grew the world's greatest papaya, the solo, and the solo sunrise. No folks, FOOD DOES NOT HAVE TO BE THAT EXPENSIVE. The exploitative generation X capitalist pig who decided to make the entire health food world his personal oyster, and produce billions for himself - I mean none other than John Mackey, CEO of Whole Foods, based in Texas by the way, who, in my opinion, rates with Rupert Murdock and Trump in his arrogance, perfidy, and greed which has unleashed so much suffering, ought to be brought before the bar of justice, sooner than later. For now, GET REAL WITH THE PRICE. Solidarity with Ralph's in this one. In fact, Ralphs could bring them down further. The Santa Barbara location is perfect as it nests in between a bunch of overpriced establishments, and is far more accessible to downtown, located right across from the bus station. They've done quite a nice thing with the outdoor seating. The drawback is that foot and vehicle traffic is heavy. They need to double down on the maintenance, esp. the restrooms. The sardine-tin parking lot, which has become such an unpleasant fixture of life in the 21st Century, also requires the greatest care in navigation, because there are many who disagree with me. If you take that declivity to the right, you will find a rather capacious underground parking area, much more easily negotiated. The elevator is excellent. The entrance, by the way, is not from Cabrillo, but Chapala, which is, if I'm not mistaken, a one way street north. read more

Ralph's used to be my favorite grocery store in the area until recently. Let me explain. Absolutely every single solitary day, I would buy my groceries at Ralph's and never had a problem. Then, a few months ago, I went in as I always do to purchase my groceries. When I got toward the middle of the store ailes, a manager named John stopped me and told me that I was no longer allowed on the store's property. When I asked him why, he said it was because a number of his customer's had complained about my offensive odor and that it was so offensive to them, in fact, that it disrupted their shopping experience. I was terribly embarrassed by this and felt and immediate (and what should be an unnecesary) need to defend myself. When I made an embarrassed, yet feeble attempt to defend myself, he was having none of it and told me to leave the store. I left the store with what I thought was no incident and laid low for sufficient enough time as to make the incident forgettable and then returned. The second time around, I am met at the front door by the security gaurd who tells me that the manager has informed him that I am no longer welcome on the property and he chases me out of the store. Not only that, but in the way out, he proceeded to accuse me of stealing from the store and even went so far as to say that the store managers had caught me on videotape stealing from the store. This is an utter lie and quite irobic since only a short week or two before that, I had left the store due to not having enough money with me to complete the purchase that I had intended. I also have regularly purchased very small single packets of things like lemonade and kool aid that sell for a mere 15 to 20 cents per package and would be very easy to steal were I a thief (which I am not). I called the corporate offices of Ralph's to report the incidences and my disgust with them and was told by a woman named "Lisa" (who I believe has nothing to do with Ralph's whatsoever) that she would look into the matter for me. But, sadly, for Ralph's, I never received an apology or an offer of any discounts or coupons for future services. I will definitely take my business elsewhere on a permanent basis. read more

I went to Ralph's on a Saturday night at 9pm. I'm from NY and I noticed a lot of places in SB close much earlier so I checked the sign and saw it was open til 2am. I commenced my shopping and was ready to check out. When I got to the front of the store, I noticed a single register open and a line wrapping across 4 aisles. Even though I always find the self check out to be more of a headache than its worth, I didn't feel like waiting on a line of 30 on my Saturday night. During the check out process, I scanned my item and it told me to place it on the bagging area. So I did. Then it told me to remove it, so I did. Then it told me to place it in the bagging area. This nonsense went on 5-10 times over all while the girl overseeing that area just watched and never helped. Mid way through my scanning process, they decided that 9:45pm was a perfect time to turn all the lights off in the front of the store. Nothing like making people feel like they are unwanted and pressuring them to hurry and leave, even though it was open for another 4+ hours. Ugh The most unbelieveable part of the whole experience is when I scanned an item from the frozen food section. The machine told me there was no price in the system for that item and to notify an associate for help. The same worthless girl came over and said "Oh, theres no price for this." Me: "I see that. Can you help me?" Girl:" Well do you know how much it is?" Me: "No" Girl:"Ohhh, do you wanna go take another?" Me: "Ummm, won't the same thing happen? It says there is no price for it." Store hours changed from closing at 2am to 1am. They've yet to fix that on their phone system when you press 7 for store hours. The sign for the store hours are patched up on only one entrance and the other entrance still had a sign that said 2am. Employees are b*tches towards you for coming in an hour before closing time. Came in to pick up one item. Asked three different people so far where to find it. None of them knew offhand. None of them made any attempt to find out. Each of them just fobbed me off on someone else. (It's easier to just guess about who might possibly know what you don't know than to stop doing what you're doing and find out who knows what you don't know. That would, you know, be good customer service. Which is totally, like, hard.) The guy in produce sent me to the pharmacy, where I waited in line for ten minutes while both pharmacists helped an ancient woman who was yelling loudly about her vagina and wanting a refill on "the pills that look like M&M's." The pharmacist who finally got to me didn't know but sent me to the customer service desk. The customer service desk didn't know but swore that the lady at checkstand 4 will. Every time I've had to stand in line again and just been sent somewhere else. I've written this while standing in line at checkstand four, where the cashier has so far rung up more than $500 in groceries while I've been writing. Let's see if she knows or is just going to send me to the fucking meat counter. Seriously, why don't they just change their store motto to "because fuck you, that's why"? EDIT. This is the nicest Ralph's around, I call it Fancy Ralph's. The architecture and landscaping is not what you'd associate with a grocery store, it's very very nice, with Mediterranean tiles, fountains, and a pergola, with olive trees, lavendar and rosemary. Inside, the food available is better than average grocery store fare. All the standard big brands are available, but in the deli and bakery sections are better service for fresh meat, fish, cheese and salads. I seem to recall back when this store first opened that there was a wood fired oven for gourmet pizzas. But I didn't see that this time, so either I wasn't looking hard enough, or I imagined the pizza ovens from back then. Whatever. The produce section wasn't any better than other places, but the staff there was very nice and obliged my odd request to collect loose onion skins (that's another story). It was also a very blustery morning, and I walked into the store cold and windswept. The big rotisserie in the deli section was very warm and comforting just at the moment I needed it. My impulse purchase was a chicken flauta in the deli section. That was a complete disappointment. The flauta had meat bulging out at the ends of the tortialla, but was almost completely hallow in the middle. I would say I was gyped, but it cost a paltry 99 cents. I feel the need to review this store since it has a low average rating. It seems a lot of people have rage-reviewed this place and given it an unnecessarily low rating as "punishment" for one or two specific things that irritated them. But actually the store is fine. I live two blocks away and shop here about twice a week, so I should know. I mean, seriously, what do you expect from a grocery store? It's not a gourmet restaurant, but that's as it should be. In most respects it is average, because in most respects most grocery stores are average. I buy Quaker oatmeal. They have Quaker oatmeal. This surprises no one. Every grocery store has Quaker oatmeal. Likewise milk and bread and all the other basic items that every grocery store has. They have these items when I want them. I take them off the shelves and carry them to the front and buy them. That is about the level of "service" I expect from most grocery stores. The produce selection meets my needs. I often go to the deli, where service is always friendly. I also buy a lot of fish from the butcher counter. Always goes smoothly. Yes, sometimes I have to wait a minute because the guy is in the back room. That is life. It happens at many grocery stores. There's no doubt in my mind that the staff here have to deal with some real kooks from time to time. This store is right across the street from the bus station. It's also open late. Strange individuals come here at all hours. On more than one occasion I have watched employees deal patiently with customers who seemed to be a few cards short of a full deck. I saw a scraggly guy babbling at the deli counter, claiming his cart of food had been stolen and insisting that the meat be replaced with the exact same amount, down to the tenth of a pound. After repeating several times that "this was already paid for, maaaan", he moved on to ranting about how he was a Vietnam veteran and "this country is going to the dogs, maaan". I could understand if the employees got a little fed up with that sort of thing, but in fact they took it in stride. Mad propz to them. Yes, the underground parking is not totally obvious. Yes, the hand baskets are not always near the door. Yes, sometimes the self-checkout machine randomly stops and says "attendant has been notified to assist you" for no obvious reason. (The attendant usually fixes this within seconds.) These are minor issues. I've encountered similar issues at most grocery stores. And this grocery store has some notable pluses too. Plenty of self-checkout lanes. Well-stocked. And it has that nice little courtyard with a fountain. A fountain! With tables and chairs! You can sit by a fountain and eat on your food without leaving the grocery store premises. If that's not worth 4 out of 5 stars, I don't know what is. read more

This Ralphs is so gross on the outside. Trash everywhere. The elevators are like 100 years old of disgusting filthy dirty nasty crap all over and stinks like urine.. I like this store, its pretty good. The deals are sometimes real good. The produce section used to be kind of sucky, but its gotten better. Customer service is alright, although I usually use the automatic checker. The store is well lit and they have the regular shopping carts and baskets, but the baskets a lot of time get stuck together and come out three at a time sometimes. Never tried the soups or salad bar, although they look pretty good. I will stop in here to get energy drinks because they are usually on sale and Ralphs is on my way to work because it is right next to the transit center. Also the liquor selection is pretty good and there is usually something good on sale or sometimes I get champagne from here and it is pretty good(not great) and usually on sale. If you need to use a restroom and you are in this area on foot and you REALLY need to use the restroom you can come here and they are usually clean, except for after like 11pm when whoever was in charge of them goes, "eh, the night crew can get it". One product that I like that they have is cheese(all kinds) also their pickles are good(the cold ones) and by the cheese. If you get the ones by the mayonnaise and olives they are not as good as the ones by the cheese. A friend of mine(lives in South Carolina now) says he likes to buy produce from stores with automatic checkers and just punch every thing in as bananas(because they are so cheap per lb.) This seems funny but also dishonest(I have never done it, not even with apples). One place I will just eat stuff right off the shelves and eat donuts from and also one time a whole shrimp platter without paying is Wal-Mart, but not for their politics(I am too level-headed to mix emotions or food with politics(that might sound conceded but, really, I have never met anyone who was *really* into politics who was like wow, way smarter than me.(They put stock and faith into guys who wear ties everyday(you do not get told the truth by a guy in a tie(think about it.(Lawyers, waiters, talkshow hosts,(wow, this movie was great) mayors for the most part and Avril Lavigne(I mean, recall every one you have dealt with, or even the last five, who have worn a tie, and ask your self if they are phonys(which reminds me... is J.D. Salinger even a good author? I feel like I would need to read "Catcher" again but don't want to(I read it and liked it when I was 12, but I also used to think El Caminos were a neat idea(I haven't read that one book of short stories though, so maybe I'll read that, I mean if I see it for like, a dollar at a thrift store(I think I read in an interview that Nabokov liked Salinger stuff(Although... you can't really trust Na-BOH-kov's tastes too much, he is very particular in odd ways(he talks a lot of trash about Dostoyevsky and Faulkner(who are(where?) amazing(Crime and Punishment is my favorite book.(The Brothers Karamazov is more grand/epic/defining, but, C&R is just so perfect and much tighter(like early Beatles/later Beatles(If your afraid to jump into Dostoyevsky, he has this great little novella called "The Gambler" which is not that long and told like your reading this guys Journal that really moves quickly and is real satisfying(The story behind him writing the novel is pretty amazing too(he entered into this insane loan agreement with a publisher that if he didn't deliver the novel by a certain date he had to forfeit his copywrite to all his previous work(he was having pretty serious epileptic seizures at the time, and the strain of actually writing the the would probably have killed him, so ye got a secretary girl and dictated the whole thing to her(they fell in love and ended up getting married(how he proposed was really sweet too(he pretended that he wanted to hire her for another book and said it was about an old author who fell in love with a young woman etc. etc. recapping their relationship as the plot(it seems really cheesy and almost romantic comedy plot style contrived but it was real life and it happens( I happen to be madly in love with my own perfect little secretary who is more amazing then I or even the greatest author could ever convey on a page(Providence is more powerful than the greatest imagination can imagine (or sometimes believe))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) but because I accidentally left some items on their stupid confusing turnstile bagging thing, came back 10min later with a receipt and they wouldn't give me the items they had already re-stocked. To me, they still owe like 15 dollars in grocery's, so I just eat stuff off the shelves when I'm there, nobody seems to mind or say anything either(?). This Ralphs seems a lot cooler than that and i guess I would say this is a good place for you to buy food. Umm - the deli experience was SO bad and SO painful everybody in line was confused. One man was complaining already. We had formed a "line." There was a ticket machine that everybody ignored. EVERY single employee avoided eye contact like the plague. There was NO communication. And people that hadn't been waiting in line just walked up and got service instantly for absolutely no other reason. It was insane and I was so incredulous over the whole thing. Tom Ross, the manager who wishes to remain incognito, outdid himself today. I asked Tom for some tape to seal the bottom of the cellophane bag provided by the Floral Dept to protect the stems of a dozen roses I had just purchased. Tom found a roll of tape and tried, unsuccessfully, to find the end. Knowing from my 76 yrs of experience that finding the end on a roll of tape can be difficult, and believing Tom might have better things to do, I asked him to give me the roll of tape. Tom became unhappy with the way I was solving the lost end problem. He tore the roll of tape out of my hand. I asked him to hand it back, he refused. I reminded him of an incident some months back when I asked him his last name and he had refused, stating, "You don't need to know that." Tom denied that he ever said that. I said, "Well, lets settle it, what's your last name/" and reminded him his last name is on the bottom of every cash register receipt. Tom, ignoring the obvious stated, "I can't tell you that. What's with all the negative reviews? Try working in the place before you start whining and complaining about everything under the sun! Put yourself in the shoes of the people who work there and we'll see how long you last. But they've lasted! They are there everyday, and you are not. You, the glib, sarcastic, amused, detached cynic, step in, step out, look for -- and find -- something to gripe about! Get a life. Start lifting people up instead of putting them down. I shop here once a week -- no problems. Other than the "homeless situation" outside, it's always a good visit, and nearly always enhanced by the pleasant demeanor and professional attitude of two of the fastest checkers in Santa Barbara -- thank you Ava and Victoria. read more

The store is clean, and well stocked. The staff is not the friendliest, and the parking lot is the most stressful in town. People don't seem to understand that there is parking downstairs and just circle the upstairs becoming nuts. read more

BEWARE! Do not go to this store until the management gets their act together. 40 or more people in each line, only two lanes open during the busiest times. Courtesy clerks walking around aimlessly, the manager on scene walking around with no sense of urgency, abandoned grocery baskets scattered all about from people who gave up waiting. It took me 45 minutes to get through the line, and the day before it was even worse. One courtesy clerk gave an off handed comment about how "the availability of their cashiers has been low". Really?!?! Management needs to get their act together, and start hiring more people, or firing those that keep calling in and not showing up. I will be shopping elsewhere until I hear that I don't have to wait an hour to check out. read more
