This is seriously an abysmal grocery store. I'm trapped in this awful, abusive relationship because they're the only grocery store in the neighborhood, and after a long day at work, I don't want to drive an extra few miles on city streets to go grocery shopping. The parking lot has more crazy going on in it than Westboro Baptist Church. People begging for money while flipping through cell phones, political activists trying to get signatures, groups of kids popping and locking in circles and having dance-offs in the middle of the lot, girls getting verbally attacked by their exes, and homeless people sleeping along the wall. Not to mention there doesn't seem to be enough space for the demand of the shopping center. Getting in and out of this lot is a nightmare in rush hour. You get in the store, and you can immediately see that it's disorganized. Random product all over the place. You'll also notice that the check-out lines are *long*, especially in the later hours. The produce always seems to be several days old - when I was trying to find a tomato today, I could only find *one* that wasn't overly bruised or oozing. Green produce always seems to be teetering on the edge of brown. They always seem to be sold out of a lot of different fruits and vegetables. The meat and seafood sections are tiny - the seafood in particular I'll be avoiding forever... They seem to be missing key ingredients in many sections. They carry all brands of shampoo, conditioner, lotion, toothpaste, mouthwash, but only 2 or 3 brands of body wash? Furthermore, they're those au-naturale 11 dollar a bottle varieties. They carry ALL brands of taco sauce, but *only* the mild taco sauce. The person at the deli counter, no matter who it is, always looks like he or she is ready to fall on a knife. The only plus side to this mess is the cashiers. They late afternoon and night crew are very personable and pleasant to talk to you. The overnight crew, however, could not care less about your existence. Full on textversations and conversations were being had over me as I was trying to ask questions. Really terrible market all around. The checkers are slow and angry, the produce is often either just missing (no bananas?! no lemons?! -- both have been AWOL more than once) or in terrible condition. They inexpertly trim veggies down to take rotten parts off, too. But perhaps worst of all is the seafood department, which is way too small and always looks totally disgusting. I keep telling myself that it's okay to go here just for basics since it's walking distance from my house, but this week the half & half in the dairy case was all expired AND sitting in a puddle of gooey, stinky spilled milk. It's so strange because this store feels newer than the one I used to go to at 3rd and La Brea, but it's so, so much grosser. I am giving this place an extra star for the entertainment factor. You are almost guaranteed to see some stripper/hooker/bum/freak either outside as you walk in or checking the tomatoes with a glazed look. This place is bringing the new NoHo down! Don't they know that the people have spoken and we don't want filth and drugged out homeless people at our grocery stores anymore. Seriously, I only go here when I am in a rush, it's day time or my giant boyfriend is with me. Even then, we park close to the doors. I live in the North Hollywood area, just about three blocks. Since I don't drive (yeah, I know), I usually walk up to this Ralph's. The complaint I always has had about this Ralphs was the poor service and long lines. Plus they don't have the variety of the Ralph's in Studio City. Because of these factors, I've also have dubbed this location the "Ghetto Ralphs". The prices seem comparable to other Ralph's. Even with the new makeover, there is still a problem with the customer lines. They need to hire more checkers. As far as undesirable elements, I don't really see that many. I see a few homeless/street people from time to time, but it's not like there's a large encampment of them outside. read more

Dearest Ralph's, Not that you give a shit, that's obvious, you have finally lost a loyal, damn near every day customer of almost 3 years. For a little while, it almost seemed like the issue of panhandlers and solicitors in the parking lot was getting better...then BAM, back to someone posted up on every corner- Now complete with people using children as props. (Not shaming anyone struggling with kids/poverty, but there are infinite government programs, especially here in CA, to help them, also there is a huge scam of a pimp like situation where these women are not destitute and are actually collecting for someone else, they even take shifts and switch girls but use the same god damn poor fucking kid-look it up if you care). However, the absolute FINAL straw: the actual witch of my beloved neighborhood, a woman I've not-so-affectionately nicknamed "The Cart Keeper". She's the seemingly frail, but mean as hell old lady that tends to the carts in the parking lot. Yes, I get that job probably fucking sucks, but we ALL do shit we don't like, work in situations where we'd prefer to tell the customers what we're actually thinking-but when it comes down to it, every job that deals with the public is about customer service. So when you want to get real and say bitch please, you have to grit and bear the bullshit and remember you're getting paid for it. This (legit) fucking bitch yells at customers all the time. If you don't wait for her to push those stupid fucking carts through the door, she'll call you out on it...even though YOU are the patron. She'll question why you choose one cart, when there's another one right there (even though it's full of someone else's trash and that. ain't. your. job. to clean up). I get that this awesome state has so many laws protecting our workers from being fired, but this woman legitimately harasses and bitches at customers all day long. I try to avoid her at all costs but EVERY single time I'm there I encounter her, and it is never pretty. Your customers should not have anxiety over facing one of your employees. The ONLY reason for the second star here (As if one were even an option), is for the very few employees that are consistently pleasant to deal with- Eric is one of the only ones with an actual likable personality, a few more of the younger guys that work there, and the tall blonde cashier. This store is gross. For others here that have said it "matches the neighborhood" most of the blocks around it have $2000 a month 2 bedroom apartments and $600K condos. There's a shiny How's up the street and theaters all around. Then, there is slimy Ralph's. The produce is old, the staff is rude and they allow a variety of odd and aggressive street merchants to sit out front. Most of the lights in the parking lot don't work. I came into the store today to buy eggs so I could come home and bake. One of my employees took her US citizen oath today and we are having a red white and blue themed party ....tomorrow. On a whim i checked out the bakery to see if they had anything I may be able to pass off as USA themed. No luck. The guy behind the counter, Damond, asked me if I needed help. I told him "it's mid October, but I need 4th of July style cupcakes..tonight" we both giggled a little and and I asked for just plain cupcakes i could use my own sprinkles on. This would save me from having to turn on the oven in this crazy heat and save me hours of time. He said he could do that. I did some shopping. Came back in 5 minutes and he's like, "we so have red white and blue sprinkles" and he put those bad boys on there for me! He went above and beyond to make happy. It's a grocery store, what more can be said. Honestly, the only reason I come here is for the convenience. Other than that, I probably would not shop here at all. Here are a few reasons. 1. The solicitors and bums are a huge bother. Half the time when I go there I just pray I can make it through the front door without someone stalking me about saving the blue bearded frog in some damn rain forest. How many trees are they killing with their triplicate documents they want me to sign? Or their plastic clipboards they are holding? I hope they are bio degradable. 2. Dogs in the store? Really? They sell food there. I am not a dog hater, but there is no need to bring a dog into a grocery store, unless the little bastard has a credit card and is paying the bill. I can't imagine one of those dogs taking a bathroom break in the produce section. It's not sanitary. 3. Speaking of produce, it is terrible. The onions always look as if they are rotting and the rest of the produce is probably covered in about 2 inches of pesticides. I'd prefer to go to whole foods, but the drive isn't worth it. I'm just glad I'm not a vegetarian. 4. Put the Redbox outside. That is all. 5. They did a price switch on me one time. This really blew my mind. I found some organic meat priced at lets say $7lb. At the check out it rang up $15. I told them there was a lower price on the display. They sent a runner. She comes back and says nope, nothing there. I walk back there. Holy crap! Someone took the price down. In a matter of literally 3 mins. I checked all the other packages and luckily I found one that had the mark down price. Not a coincidence. 6. I have to buy a ton of wine to get a discount. Like I really want to walk out with cases of wine? Nope. I like to keep my alcoholism private. read more

This used to be my neighborhood Ralphs. As often as possible, I would go out of my way to the Ralphs on Buena Vista and Victory to avoid this one. Between the solicitors/beggars outside the door, the long lines, the slightly dimmer lighting and narrower aisles compared to the newer stores, I felt like I was shopping where supermarkets go to die. The groceries and prices are fine, but shopping at this Ralphs is a generally depressing affair. read more

This is one of my favorite Ralph's in the Valley. Little known secret: I get my birthday cake here every year. Their bakers really knock it out of the park and have creative cake offerings like hamburgers, Dia de Los Muertos and watermelon themed at literally a fraction of the cost of some of the fancier cake shops. They also have a juice bar, a decent selection of sushi and a ton of produce. The parking lot can be a little tricky and feel a tad sketch sometimes, but it's pretty much the only drawback. The nicest Ralph's in the Valley (IMO) is in Universal City, so if you need the Gelson's experience at Ralph's prices go there. This location, however, will still give you a lot of good options at pretty good prices. read more

This store is always clean and reasonably stocked. Everyone is really friendly and their customer service is excellent. This store has a lot of traffic and they seem to manage it really well. You should expect a line at the cashier but it won't take long if you are patient and a decent person. read more

I am a fan of anything that stays open late for the people who work until midnight. This is the only Ralph's that closes at 1 am anywhere near my home which is convenient for me because with school and work I don't always have time to do shopping during the day. Just had to ring up $267 of groceries MYSELF at their miserable self check aisle because Kroger is too f*cking cheap to pay their cashiers. Just what I want to be doing at midnight-- fighting with a self checkout register and bagging my own groceries. And paying Kroger for the privilege. Oh, and they no longer have hand baskets because apparently people stole them. So the customers are SOL. Sorry for all the vulgarisms in this review, but this company deserves it. They are the bottom of the barrel and everything that is wrong with corporate greed in this country. And we just make them richer. I am genuinely sorry I didn't just leave the groceries and walk out.... But I felt sorry for the poorly-treated employees who would have had to put them back. I won't shop at another Kroger-owned supermarket again. Not when Trader Joe's is so much more manageable and service-oriented... and has employees that actually seem to be treated well. read more

The goods:: 1. If you are a mom using the WIC program this store is great because they have a good selection of organic baby foods that are covered by WIC. They carry Ella's Kitchen, Gerber Organic and Plum Organics. 2. They have a nice selection of organic produce. 3. The employees/checkers are all very nice. The bads::: 1. They are out of infant formula a lot. You would think that after being out for SO long, they would figure out to order more every month. I have to call ahead and make sure they have what I need and ask them to hold it for me (which they do), so I don't waste a trip. Any mother with a small child will tell you, making a trip to the grocery store is a big deal in her schedule, so you better have that shit when she gets there! 2. The carts are old. I always end up getting one that squeaks and sounds like shit when I drive it. 3. The bums/drama. It is entertaining from afar, but taking an 8 month old into the store can really amp up your mama wolf protection mechanism. There are scuzzbuckets a plenty in this location. Take pepper spray. 4. They allow dogs in the store which grosses me the fuck out. Keep your nasty, flea turd ass dog outside and away from my kid and my food. I don't even think that shit is legal in CA. Like many other yelpers on this post, this is my local grocer and these people should be doing something else besides selling groceries or in customer service. I went to do my usual grocery shopping one Sunday and I also needed a roll of quarters. I was up at the line and asked the cashier for a roll of quarters and she looked at me like I asked her what bra size she wears. After I repeated the question she said, we don't have any quarters. So upon me finally checking out which took forever, she whips out a roll of quarters. Thanks Lady! Now that I have checked out already and would have to request "cash back" while using my debit card. Ahh Ralph's you have so disappointed me. I used to love shopping at Ralph's but last night I had an experience that changed my mind, quite possibly for all of the stores which remains to be seen but at least for the location on Magnolia in North Hollywood. I rushed into Ralph's at 8:49 to get deli meats for a late dinner and when I went to the deli counter the 2 employees were chatting so I waited for 5 minutes before I interrupted them to order my deli. When the one employee walked over she said we are closed to which I responded it isn't 9 yet and I was here for over 5 minutes. She walked away in a huff and sent the other girl over who swiftly shut the lights in the deli case and immediately had an attitude saying you are the last we are closed. So I ordered my deli and while I was there another women walked up to ask a question and again the rude counter girl said "I'm closed" the women just wanted to know if she would find the macaroni that is in the deli case during the day in one of the outer cases after they closed to which the rude women stated 'NO WE THROW IT ALL OUT" and she turned her back on the customer. I then asked about the chicken they usually have behind the deli only to be told there was none but when I walked back by when leaving in a grocery card was a huge basket of chicken getting ready to be thrown out. Now this is where I am disappointed with Ralph's. You mean to tell me you throw out all the food in the case instead of offering it to shelters for the homeless. I know for a fact many of the shelters would gladly have some one pick up the food you as a big corporation deem unusable. But the other fact if a customer wanted to buy it she should have been able to since it was still 2 minutes to 9 but since you are throwing it out maybe you could have made the money you need to keep your prices from going up like they have since you remodeled the store. I have been in business all my life and if one of my employees even turned down a sale I would not be happy at all, first of all that is not good customer service, second I realize every sale for my company means higher profit, which leads to better pay for my employees and lower prices and if the product truly couldn't be sold for some reason by donating the food the goodwill toward the community of homeless brings in new customers who no longer see your company as a big greedy conglomerate. read more

I don't go here regularly. One time I was almost run over by a guy pushing his kid in a stroller. He said "excuse me" and then plowed his way into me. What an A-hole. People here have no class and everything is overpriced. BUT...I was sick and sent my hubs to get some soup because it was close and he came home with a soup and a sub from the deli, a couple frozen pizzas and couple bags of frozen dumplings and it was around $50. FIRST: It has NO business being open 24 hours a day. The poor stockers have so much crap to finish and on top of that they have to run around and tend to drunk, irate and insomniac customers. SECOND: The cashiers have it really bad and so does the manager. 75% of the time they don't have more than 4 lanes open and the lines get super long. How would you feel if you were asked to work 3 times as fast and still get the same crap hourly wage? On top of that you are dealing with very angry costumers. The only reason I go to this location is because it's close and less expensive than How's when I am feeling cheap. If I was the head Ralph's person I would be embarrassed by this location. Why is this location left so gross? Why is it allowed to carry the Ralph's name? It adds to or helps keep the immediate area down. Just up the street is How's - which is wonderful. Nice, big, clean and huge selection (but expensive). Leaving this Ralph's parking lot and attempting to make a left turn is nearly impossible, especially when the taco truck parked on the street is blocking your view of all the oncoming traffic. As far as the store goes, it's a Ralph's. It's not bad, it's not good, it gets the job done. Is this Ralphs as dreadful as everyone is claiming? Why, yes, absolutely it is. It is a "ghetto" Ralphs in every sense of the word. It's ugly, it smells and features employees who look like they got rejected from auditions of the movie The Elephant Man. So why do I give this place three stars? Because of the sandwiches! Oh sure, all you people can go to your Quiznos or your Subways or even your Togos. But for me, nothing beats the freshness of a roast beef sandwich one finds at a grocery store, and particularly this one specific Ralphs. I've been to other Ralphs, who have provided me with less than stellar sandwich results. Other locations have given floppy, sloppy bread, lame portions of meat and an overabundance of mayo. But not this Ralphs! The deli superstars of this ghetto Ralphs provide strong, solid bread, equal amount of proportions and sandwich makers who take their time to craft the perfect lunch. I hit this shit up whenever in the need for a quick, delicious lunch. Not a fan. I usually go shopping after 10pm because that's when i get done school. I went last night and had another bad experience. First of all you will never see more weirdo's out then at Ralphs around 11pm. I guess its a hangout spot for them. Second, the only nice employee in the place is the security officer. Hats off to him for putting up with all the late night nonsense. I am usually pretty friendly with everyone but when I try and talk to any of the late night employees its usually awkward and seems like i am bothering them. Third, I forgot my Ralphs card and the cashier refused to let me use the stores card. I was about to walk out an go somewhere else if it wasn't for the fact that i was exhausted from a 16 hour day. ended up paying an extra 6 dollars for all the things i didn't save on without my card. I was in express lane (15 items or less). The person both in front of me and behind me had over 40 items. When it was my turn, I asked the cashier (who was also the manager) why they were allowing this to happen. Manager said it happens all the time, so they just let it go. "Really?" She said "this store is different from all the other Ralph's". When I pointed out that was unfair to other customers in line, she told the woman behind me it was only 15 items. The woman behind started screaming that since "they" were separating the items in 15 item batches, it was fine. (There were 3 batches and still a full cart when I left) And the manager shrugged her shoulders and handed me my change, apologizing for the customers. Not once did she even tell the woman to move to another lane. I was more shocked that the MANAGER did nothing; that person does not have the backbone to be a managerial position.
