Worst experience I have EVER HAD WITH A PHYSICIAN. He didn't talk, he was OVER AN HOUR LATE, his staff have ZERO IDEA what is going on. Dr. Mudiyam ordered some tests STAT and I wasn't able to get the paperwork to get anything done! This office is the biggest joke. The waiting room had a million people in it and I am not sure why. This place is the WORST! I ended up in ER after I was told I might be SEPTIC!!!!!! I was hospitalized for 4 days after my visit "with STAT orders". Because of the hospital and Er I can walk again. I have all sorts of back problems, and even after 2 spinal surgeries he seems to have no problem dismissing my claims of pain. Additionally, getting through to his office is difficult. Dr Mudiyam has fused my L3-S1 discs in my spine. Fused C4-C7 in my cervical spine and replaced both my hips. I would never dream of seeing another spine surgeon. He is kind, patient. Has never ever been surgery happy. We took other avenues for my pain until surgery seemed inevitable. He has always told me exactly what he sees, the possibilities and let me make the decisions on how to move forward. I had an unpleasant and embarrassing experience with this orthopedic surgeon. In October 2015, I briefly met with Dr. Mudiyam to seek an opinion on degenerative lumbar spine disease. This surgeon gave me a brief twenty minute physical exam and a medical consultation. Then he recommended an extensive L2-L3 and L3-L4 laminotomy foraminotomy with a synovial facet cyst removal. I had been given general instructions by his office nurse Marianne and was made to sign a surgical consent form. Their entire surgical process sounded too good to be true. Dr. Mudiyam was heavily booked in his surgery scheduling. Since my operation was not due for a month, I was instructed to have all of my preoperative blood work, x-rays and cardiac clearance completed two weeks prior to my surgery. I had complied to the office requests however, the office staff never faxed over my blood work to FVC. I had confirmed this with the hospital admitting and their laboratory department. There wasn't any follow up in the coordination of my scheduled spine surgery. None of Dr. Mudiyam's staff had made sure that my ordered medical clearance was verified nor completed. I had ended cancelling this spine operation due to the fact this surgeon's behavior had disturbed me as I felt he was not acting in my best interest. The surgeon also became angry and abusive towards me. Upon further telephone inquiry as to the lack of communication and addressing my questions about the details of the operative procedure. Dr. Mudiyam said to me, "I've been a surgeon for almost thirty years. Don't you tell me what to do. If you don't like it, then you can go somewhere else." Then he slammed down the phone in my face. What a horrible bedside manner I had felt Dr. Mudiyam was exhibiting towards me. I couldn't trust a volatile surgeon like him to undergo the knife in his operating room. I would think twice about going to his orthopedic office for any spine related care. read more

About twenty-five years ago I was diagnosed with hip bursitis and told there wasn't much that could be done about it. I've had dozens of steroid injections into the bursa and struggled with chronic pain anyway. I was finally referred to Dr. Mudiyam, who took the hip problem seriously and began imaging and interventions. X-Ray and MRI showed far more problems than just bursitis. After appropriate physical therapy and injections into joints I'm now pain free! I never thought I would feel this good again and I'm very thankful. If you want poor service and wait almost two hours just to be seen for two minutes, then you've found a great piece of s**t doctor. My boyfriend just had back surgery and this doctor has gotten from bad to just plain s**tty. I'm warning you, DON'T BOTHER WITH THIS "DOCTOR". He obviously doesn't care about his patients. Like I mentioned before, my boyfriend had back surgery due to his sciatica. Dr. Mudiyam only babe him 12 sessions of physical therapy, which is unheard of. Luckily he has PPO so he doesn't need a referral and has continued with his treatment. The only reason we are here today is to collect all the information we need, all the records from the surgery, the last MRI, etc, so that we can give them to our new doctor at Newport Orthopedic Institute. I myself am a patient at Newport and although the front desk is ok, the doctors are great. They have and outpatient service, all the machines they need to properly diagnose you, everything to HELP YOU GET BETTER! This guy is a joke. We're not seeking any special treatment, I don't want this guy to be my friend, I just want him to do his job and treat patients. We're asking for help with my bf sciatica problem. Where do I start? I decided at 25 that I should go ahead and get a lumbar fusion. Worst decision of my life! I woke up from surgery with my leg on fire from a nerve being irritated(didn't have that before surgery). I was told to give it 6 months to a year for it to go away. 8 years later and life flipped upside down I'm in more pain than ever and suffer the most torturous sciatica down my left leg every single second of the day. My first surgery with Dr. Mudiyam wasn't the last. I ended up getting my screws replaced during a second lumbar fusion with another doctor. Long story short...I'm 33 now and what was some minor back pain resulted in a failed fusion and poor follow up care from Dr. Mudiyam's office. It's always difficult trying to navigate finding a good doctor and I definitely feel like I failed when I chose Dr. Mudiyam. I should have heeded the poor reviews and I recommend that you do as well if you're considering scheduling a visit with him. My first visit was last summer when I went in to be seen for chronic back pain that I had been experiencing for about six months. I waited 45 minutes past my scheduled appt. time, he took x-rays, couldn't find a cause for the pain and suggested physical therapy. I did the p.t., found no relief and called for a follow up visit to explore other options. This time I waited an hour and fifteen minutes past my appt time and was livid, I had to cancel a job that I had scheduled due to being so late and told the Dr. that it was unacceptable to have such poor time management. He just shrugged and said, sorry like it was no big deal to him. He recommended a MRI which I scheduled for the following week and was told by the MRI tech that the results would be sent to the Dr. within three days. A week and half later I hadn't heard back so I called to find out the status. Waited on hold for 30 mins, decided to leave a voicemail, waited two days for a call back, never got one so I called again. This time I waited on hold 20 mins before choosing the option to hold my place in line and get a call back. Waited the whole rest of the day, never heard from anyone and called back once again. I got through after being on hold for 30 more mins to schedule the MRI follow up. I asked for a telehealth zoom call because I do not want to wait for over an hour at the office again. The scheduling assistant gave me the zoom call id and password (though she was obviously working from home and was distracted by her child the I heard her talking to) she started to give me one id number, then corrected herself by giving a different one. Well today is the day for the telehealth call and low and behold, I went to sign in on zoom and it says the id is incorrect. I've been on hold for 45 mins now trying to reach someone to find out how I can connect to the zoom call. Bottom line, their customer service is bullshit. The Drs. attitude is rude and his concern for his patients wellbeing is non-existent. I will never be going back. read more

Some nights, I would literally pass out from the pain to sleep, probably averaging 3-4 hours per night. I tried conservative treatments like chiro, acupuncture and massage and was getting mixed results but no visible improvement. Last Friday, 3/13 I made two appointments with spine surgeons. In the AM, I had an appointment at Hoag. The surgeon was two hours late for the appointment while I wait with intense leg spasms. He looks at my MRI for a few minutes and suggests Oxy + Prednisone over the weekend and to come back for a spinal on Monday if I didnt feel better. After lunch we saw Dr. Mudiyam. I was immediately seen by him. He sat up on the exam table with me and we went through the MRI frame-by-frame. The L4/L5 actually showed a detached disc that was not going to improve on its own, or through a steroid injection. We mutually came to the conclusion that pain management was not an option and I needed surgery. Surgery was yesterday. I was pretty squeamish about it since I've never been put under before. When he opened me up, scar tissue had begun to form around the disc fragment that was now fully detached so the procedure took about twice as long. I'm recovering at home now. He just called and asked how I was feeling - on a Saturday, as well as several times yesterday. I cannot recommend Dr. Mudiyam any more highly. In addition, his PA, Shawna is fantastic as are Marianne and Maria. If you are having this level of back pain, you need to take care of it and not put it off, since long term nerve damage can develop, and this is permanent. While sometimes a bulged disc will go back to normal with chiro or spinal injections, a more serious problem like mine needs attention. Please see Dr. Mudiyam. read more

Dr. Mudiyam replaced my left hip seven years ago and just recently (October 28, 2021) replaced my right hip. My left hip was and is perfect and I have had no problems. I am just two weeks past the right hip surgery, but everything is going very well and I feel well taken care of. I am very pleased with Dr. Mudiyam and Newport Orthopedic Institute and feel well taken care of. I would not hesitate to return should it be necessary. read more

I came to Dr. Mudiyam for a second opinion. I have a L5S1 ruptured disc with horrible sciatica and periformis pain. He spent a great deal of time with my Mother and I which I needed. Made me feel comfortable with his expertise and confidence to fix my busted back. Probably will get surgery and pray for the best. Anything is better than my current state of Hell. Quality of life has gone from almost perfect to now I envy the bums I walk by in L.A. The wait time was longer than norm, but hey its worth the wait. My wife is a Physician and they really do try to book people the best they can but with surgeries schedule its important to be flexible. BTW, I'm 35 and extremely active. I will update this post once I have had surgery or other treatment. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Mudiyam since 2001. He has done 2 major surgeries on my spine, one cervical spine and one (3 levels) of lumbar spine. I was barely able to walk and had excruciating pain. His surgeries and subsequent care have literally given me my life back in terms of physical quality of life. I will be forever grateful that he was recommended by my pain specialist physician. That doctor told me, "He is the only one I would let touch my spine." That is quite a recommendation from one doctor to another. Took mt 3 1/2 weeks to get into see this Dr. due to his schedule being so booked. This i find shocking with my appt. I have been in awful pain and was really praying and hoping to receive answers from this visit. My appt was at 3:00, I sat in a room until 4:20 when a PA came in to ask questions to update the dr to "expedite" things. She asked a lot of questions to which I explained and answered. I was then left in the room for another 10 minutes when the Dr finally came in and knew nothing of her questioning me. I was with him for about 15-20 minutes, he answered his cell phone 3 times and held conversations all 3 times in the middle of trying to explain what was happening with my situation. Additionally his nurse came in twice to ask about another patient. Every time I would just about get an answer he would answer his cell or the nurse came in. When I asked questions, he said he told me already, but he hadn't due to interruptions and would not revisit my questions. I had high hopes for this visit to find some relief and hope or even some solutions to help the pain. I received nothing from this visit except frustration. I should have known when the receptionist called me and argued when she asked me if I had my CD's from all of my MRI's and xray's, when I said yes, she said no you need to get them. I had to tell her 3 times I do have them. She said well if you show up without them, he cannot see you so make sure you get them or you will need to reschedule and we are 3 weeks out for appts. He has such a quiet, kind bedside manner. He took his time with ex, & he's now performed 6 surgeries on me, 5 back surgeries, which includes a complete fusion, with cages. Dr Mudiyam also performed a fusion on my neck, & in fact all my surgeries have been a complete success. I could not have had this result without Dr Mudiyam. I was very disappointed with this dr after my second visit. I had an MRI and it took about 3 weeks to see him again. I waited over an hour for about a 5 minute visit. During this visit he continued to push surgery as the only option. He never gave me any pain medications, I had to repeatedly call his office to get a prescription for PT. He did not answer questions and rushed me out of the room. The next dr that I went to after this asked my why I haven't been prescribed anything. I was immediately put on medications and told that surgery was not necessary and would be elective due to my age and health. read more

Dr. M is very personable, speaks easily and at length about my condition. I left knowing much more about the surgery I was facing. I am very glad I didnt go to the recom. of my primary doc as they were quick to fix without fully investigating and understanding. I am super happy to have time to get the images necessary and hopeful that time will heal. If not, I feel certain I am in the right hands. I did not have to wait long to see the doc. Dr. Mudiyam performed a 4 level disc laminectomy on me in Jan of 2013, due to degenerative disc. I had been bedridden for a month prior to that and couldn't get in because it was over the Christmas holidays. But the day after surgery, I was gotten out of bed and was able to walk around, with a walker, in the hospital. I just cannot believe what an impact this surgery made on my life. I had this done when I was 63, so I was no young man, though I was in decent shape. I only gave a 4 star because of the sometimes extended wait. Office staff is friendly and helpful. I called to schedule my first appointment, was told the first available appointment was over a month out. I was shocked but it is what it is and I made my appointment. About a week before my appointment I received a call stating that they needed to move my appointment. Again not a problem it is what it is. Now here we are the day of, after waiting well over a month and I got another call (approximately 4.5 hours before my appointment time) stating that the doctor was tied up and couldn't make the appointment so I am forced to reschedule yet again. The thing that makes me mad the most is that they have the nerve to state that if the patient cancels for any reason within 24 hours they will be charged a $35.00 cancellation fee, but they feel it is alright to have the doctor cancel within hours of the appointment and you guessed it, they will not pay you the same $35.00 for your inconvenience! Mary Ann was very polite and apologetic, however the lady who normally gives me a call is not the type of person I would have making contact with the patients. There is a saying "It's not what you say it's how you say it" well if you sound like you do not want to be working at that office and are annoyed what makes you think new or current patients and going to want to deal with that, especially when being tossed around like a bean bag just to be seen. read more

The pain I was suffering from an L4/L5 disc rupture was very intense from the pinched nerve. I had three different Orthopedists recommend Dr. M. for assessment and possible surgery. He was recommended due to his extensive experience, great results and conservative approach. Maria was able to get me in to see Dr. Mudiyam the following week and called the day before to remind me to bring in my MRI and X-rays. Dr. M did a physical exam to see the extent of the numbness, pain and loss of muscle control. After that, we viewed the MRI slide by slide. The detached disc fragment was the primary concern and was causing the nerve problem. He explained the problem in great detail and answered my unending questions. We agreed that it needed to be removed ASAP as it was causing damage to the nerve that could become permanent. He uses an outpatient microdiscectomy procedure that he has done for 30 years. Marianne was able to schedule the surgery at Hoag Orthopedic 6 days later. She was awesome at getting this set up and letting me know when and where to go and what to bring. Hoag is very impressive. I had to go in for pre-op x-ray, labs and EKG. Very organized and I was out quickly. The day of the surgery continued to impress. Great staff that we professional, knowledgeable, friendly, supportive and explained everything. Dr. M uses three facilities- go here if possible. The surgery went well. Starting at 6:30 for check in, 8:30 surgery, and went home just after noon. Both Hoag and the Dr's office called to follow up. I even called Dr. M with a question on a Saturday three days after the surgery. He took the call right away and alleviated my concerns and added some medications. After 5 days I was off the heavy pain meds and on to just Advil. The leg pain was gone immediately after the surgery. The numbness and muscle control will take months longer to come back. The follow up with his PA Shawna was great. She was also in the surgery and answered more questions. Very patient, knowledgeable and personable. She reset my limits and said to call with any more questions. I highly recommend Dr. Mudiyam and his team. As we all know bad discs don't go away and will need to be managed in the future. So you need a good Dr. to establish a relationship with to help in this process. I found the right one. read more

Dr. ram Mudiyam and his staff are phenomenal! I had been suffering from sciatica and loss of function of my legs and previously was referred by a friend to a different doctor. That doctor's answer was wait and pain killers. That went on for over 6 1/2 years. Then I heard about Dr. Ram Mudiyam and decided to call for an appointment. All I can say is , "Wow!" He came in and immediately knew I had been suffering and did a 3D X-ray in his office and immediately diagnosed me. All I could do was cry. Finally! Someone who understood my pain and had a name for it. He immediately had me going for tests and pushed workers compensation to approve my surgery. Let me tell you, Dr. Mudiyam gave me back my life! He is truly a miracle worker and I would not hesitate to refer him to anyone! I owe him so much!
