we waited about 30 minutes because they don't have a waitlist or reservations. but SO WORTH IT!!! we all got Sapporo beers but my brother got the lychee calpico. we got edamame and the takoyaki for appetizers. my mom got the miso Ramen my brother got the original number one and I got the spicy tonkatsu. The portion size was perfect and the broth was so so scrumptious it was so soothing because there was a thunderstorm outside. The servers are so kind and they actually all speak Japanese so it's very authentic. The total price was really not that bad for three people it was better than I expected! My wife and I stopped here for a late lunch after a long day out in Banff. We had to wait for about 20 minutes to get a table because it was a busy weekend. The lady who sat us down was really nice and since we had our order ready she took it and brought out the food promptly. We started with the Chicken Karage. The chicken itself was not bad although it was cut into very small cubes which is not typically how it is; they tasted nice though. The dipping sauce ruined it though. It was a sweet thai chili sauce which just destroyed the nice chicken flavor. I wish they would just stick to the standard spicy mayo and lemon. I got the Arashi Tantan Men, extra spicy. I absolutely loved every single thing about the bowl. The broth was so rich and sumptuous, the pork was absolutely tender and melted in my mouth, the noodles had a nice chew to them, there was a fantastic range of veggies and toppings that all worked well together and the soft boiled egg was perfect. The balance of peanut and garlic really enhanced the broth. I've had a LOT of ramen over the years and given the location and the product, I would probably rate this bowl among the top 3. My wife got the Veg Miso Ramen. The broth was quite nice; like an upgraded miso soup. She liked her bowl too although there was a little too much corn compared to other things which made every mouthful quite sweet. It was a solid bowl. Have been here 3 times now and I can definitely say that this is the best ramen restaurant in Banff. And I will go as far as to say, much better than ramen restaurants in Calgary. Ramen Arashi is a cozy little ramen joint that is quite hidden away in the 3rd floor of the Sundance Mall, but even then it is quite busy. We have had to wait for at least 10-15 minutes before we got a seat. But this does not mean that their service is slow, in the contrary, it's very quick and their servers are always attentive to customer needs. Our first visit we waited for about 20 minutes for a seat as the place was packed. We ordered takoyaki, dumplings, ramen tonkotsu, and 2 arashi tantan ramen. Again, service was quick, only waited 20 minutes for all our food to be served. Food was awesome! The takoyaki and dumpling were fresh and did not taste like they were prepackaged and frozen. All 3 bowls of ramen were beautifully made. The quality of the ingredients were great and the flavors were all just perfect. Seriously, I hate salty and underseasoned ramen and their ramen by far is the only one that hits the happy medium for me! I recommend Ramen Arashi for any type of event as well. We're from LA where we can get pretty amazing Japanese ramen, so we walked in here without much expectations. It looked good, but we didnt want to have high hopes and be disappointed. But WHAT! Yes, everything you've read is correct. This place is amazing! It has its quirks of course, you walk up and you just wait along the side, no sign in and no acknowledgment from staff for a long time but they get you in. It's small, and hot as hell, and probably lacks some cleanliness but it's what makes it great. Staff was nice and food came quickly but it was tough to get them back to your table. I also think it needed more broth so I had to pay for more. But alas, I left Banff wishing I could have gone here one more time. Go early and be prepared to wait. read more

This place is the real deal if you want a satisfying bowl of ramen. It's a bit tucked away on the 2nd floor of a small mall. The restaurant is small (I am guessing it could probably seat around 20 people) so you might have to wait. It's worth it though, just put your name on the list outside (or do takeout). Once inside, I felt like being transported to Japan. Everyone greets you (in Japanese) as you come in. There are Japanese decor items all over the place and most (if not all) personnel seems to be at least partly Japanese. The kitchen is open and you can watch them work as you wait for your food - pretty neat. I felt the prices were quite reasonable. Service was friendly and efficient. We ordered a tako yaki appetizer (fried octopus balls) and a variety of ramen bowls (Arashi tantan men, tonkatsu and miso). There is a Chinese (Szechuan) dish called Dan Dan noodles (Dan Dan mien) and the tantan men ramen shows this influence of Chinese cuisine on Japanese ramen. It was spicier and with a more substantial broth than regular ramen because of the use chili oil and ground sesame paste (and possibly ground peanuts as well). My Arashi tantan men ramen had a rich, somewhat spicy and very satisfying taste. I felt like all the components (egg, pork, etc.) were cooked perfectly too. This was very good ramen and my first introduction to tantan men. I am afraid tantan men might have spoiled me for regular ramen from now on. I will say that the Arashi ramen broth definitely had some peanut paste in it, which added a richness I liked but if you don't like this hint of peanut taste or are allergic to them, you might want to order something else. Some people in our group were allergic to peanuts and they seemed to be very careful about the food preparation after we mentioned that. The tako yaki appetizers were quite tasty too btw. Noodles were not over-cooked, nice and chewy, but the protein was only one thin slice of pork tenderloin and half of an overly salty onsen egg. What makes good ramen is the broth. Authentic ramen broth are made with meat and bone simmered for hours turned a milky white color, rich with gelatinous mouth feel and deep meaty flavor. Here the Shoyu ramen broth taste watery and artificially enhanced, not the home-made meaty broth I had enjoyed in Japan, Australia, and USA. Hubby joked "Banffers can't be choosers" because the scenery is so out of this world beautiful, I would still visit even if they feed me mediocre ramen. My grandmother and I were seating outside the restaurant after we had just placed an online order, and this Japanese lady with the short hair rudely told us to "Please leave" in front of other customers in line. The broth was a little watered down. 3.5 stars for satisfying our ramen cravings but 2 stars for the crappy wait and service. If converted to USD, it's a good price for ramen given that the bay area serves over $15 for ramen. I tried the tan tan which had a solid kick (considered it mild spicy). Good amount of portions, I was full after finishing everything. The fiance tried the Arashi Tan Tan which had less flavor than my regular tan tan oddly. I thought his was more watered down. We also ordered the chicken karaage and takoyaki. Both OK tasting appetizers... doesn't taste fresh. Total came out to less than $40 CAD, which is a good price if converted into USD. It is a hole in the wall on the second floor of an old mall. It was a little difficult spot to find the first time. You need to find the stairs at the back of the mall to get to the second floor. Arashi Ramen is very popular in Banff. I attempted to go for dinner, near the closing time, and there was still a line. I returned the next day at an off hour around 2:30 PM in the afternoon and successfully avoided a line. I started with the gyoza as an appetizer. The dumplings were solid and what I generally expect for gyoza. Of course, diners go to Arashi for the ramen. As a warning, let your server know your food allergies. Their signature ramen uses peanuts even though the menu does not mention it. I double checked with the server just in time before the kitchen started making it. As such, I switched my order to the Shoyu Ramen. The char siu (roast pork) was a little dry. On the other hand, it was lean meat and not the fatty pork I am used to in a Ramen bowl. Next, the noodles were thin but firm. Overall, they were very good. I enjoyed the egg in the bowl but felt the yolk was lukewarm. Nevertheless, I generally enjoyed the toppings. The spinach, bamboo chutes, and seaweed were a good mix. Finally, the broth was very flavorful. Consequently, the two key elements in a quality Ramen bowl is there: good noodles and tasty broth for the noodles to soak up. Although Arashi Ramen had very good Ramen, the best bowl of Ramen I had in Banff was at Block Kitchen. Great ramen for the price! My boyfriend and I found this on the whim. It's located upstairs inside a small mall. They don't take reservations so you're required to sit and wait to be seated. The line moved relatively fast as there were only two groups ahead of us. I ordered the tonkatsu ramen with the appetizer. I added all the food from the appetizer into my ramen and thought it was a great deal! We also ordered the karaage chicken and it came out very crispy!
