This past week took us from the Des Moines IA metro to Lincoln NE...and then back and forth between Lincoln and Omaha several times. On June 20th we were celebrating our friends' 31st wedding anniversary and we decided to go out for Mexican. I'd seen a video review by Fooligan Eats for Ramona's and the food looked fantastic! But could it live up the the hype? Ramona's is in Florence which is basically North Omaha. It sits along 30th St. There is some street parking and more parking is available behind the restaurant. We were greeted right away when we walked in and invited to take a seat wherever we wanted to. There is a small area of outside seating. The seats inside are a combination of low top tables and chairs and booths. There are a few tall chairs at the bar. The restaurant decor and the building itself is a little dated. But we all know the best food isn't often found in bright and shiny places... I wish I could remember our server's first name... When I mentioned learning about Ramona's from the Fooligan Eats video she said she was the one who had served them too. She was a real sweetheart! Fantastic job with us from start to finish! Kept our drinks full and checked on us throughout the meal. The chips we received with our meal were a mix of fried flour chips and corn chips. They came with two salsas. The standard mild in a squeeze bottle and a hotter salsa in a bowl. Our party ordered the following: 1x Indian taco 2x Fried burritos (1x as is and 1x with a couple of subtle changes, chili on the side etc.) 1x Burrito dinner 1x Unsweetened tea (the rest just had water) Everyone loved their food! We have a small local chain called Tasty Tacos in the Des Moines metro that I really like. They serve a fried flour taco as their signature. More what you would probably call a puffy taco... That was the first time I'd had a taco on indian fry bread. My companions are all originally from Oklahoma so fry bread is something they know a little about... My indian taco was delicious! Mounds of shredded cheese and a very generous helping of beef under it. Ramona's has a fried flour/puffy taco too. They call it their Giant Taco and it's a full 12 inches across! The portions are HUGE! The prices are more than reasonable. All four of us ate for a little under $50 before tip I've had a few days to think about it... The drive from where I live to Ramona's is roughly two hours (plus or minus a few minutes). Now I'm not entirely sure I would drive the two hours just for their food, but I can tell you if I was ANYWHERE near there it would certainly be one of my go tos! Disappointing on several levels! After hyping this place to our co-workers, we were very disappointed in our group's visit to Ramona's tonight. 1. They were out of Indian Tacos even though those are touted as one of the house specialities. Several in our group intended to order an Indian Taco -- and we didn't arrive late in the evening when it might be expected to run out. 2. Service was abysmal. Slow to come for our orders, very slow to deliver the food, and didn't come back to check on water or if anything else might be needed. 3. While ordering, we told the server we wanted 5 separate checks for our group of 7. She delivered a single check which totaled $78 including tax. After she went back and split up the check, the totals amounted to $99. That represents quite a hefty tip -- which was definitely not deserved. It seemed like we were gouged on the split. 4. The Chips & Salsa size was paltry -- only a small portion of mixed chips. I wondered if perhaps the server dropped part of the order while bringing it out. Surely they don't pretend that it was a full order. Gouged again... 5. Sadly, I had recommended Ramona's to some people who have visited our facility while in Omaha. I won't be doing that again. This one is hard, because I really wanted to like this place. The server was friendly and I have nothing bad to say about that. The food on the other hand wasn't as good as I hoped it would be. It was a slower time so we were able to order and get our food pretty quickly. I ordered chicken flautes and an order of fries. The fries weren't too bad...just some regular crinkle fries. The chicken was dry and bland and that's the only way to describe that. The space was cozy, but no plan to return. read more

I really enjoyed my meal from Ramona's! Some of the best Mexican food I've had in Omaha. I tried the deep fried burrito which was pretty good and probably better in restaurant than delivery like I got it because the bottom got a little soggy which is to be expected with how much chili and fillings there were on it for delivery. Not spicy and pretty tasty. I never saw anyone say or show what the taco burger looked like so I got it but it wasn't the best. I would skip it and try their classic entrees over this. It was fine but it was just not unique or memorable. I also had tried just a normal combo plate with enchiladas and a taco and it was tasty! I enjoyed everything I tried and would be happy to try again. Looking forward to trying the Indian taco next time. read more

I really wanted to try the fry bread taco. Loved the fried flour chips and the hot salsa was delicious and has a chunky texture with the added cucumber. I did ask for more sour cream. I'm not sure if that was in the total, or if they add gratuity. The waitress wasn't friendly, but the gal behind the bar was super enthusiastic and made us feel welcome. So disappointed and do hope they step it up. We were a group of five. We came in after the owner put out a plea on the news. They advertised Bogo on margaritas. Waitress failed to mention regular price for the tequila. I had two margaritas and for the price of two, should have felt a buzz, to which I felt nothing. Perhaps they forgot the tequila but sure as heck billed me for. Their so called Bogo was pointless. I felt manipulated and I'm not a fan. My brother wanted just a very small sample of their chili to determine if he wanted the Indian taco. The waitress said the owner would charge him for a bowl. My aunt ordered the taco dinner and the meet was cold. She said something to the waitress who pretty much dismissed her. Sadly we won't be back read more

Their food was okay. Nothing to write home about. The staff is helpful and friendly. They work hard. But the quality is not there. The inside is nice to eat in when it isn't too busy which it has been many times we've visited. Plus, they advertise for politicians who are not in the best interest of business owners or, citizens in general. Honestly, no matter who the politician is, not sure a business who is consistently online complaining about lack of business ought to be dividing themselves saying basically they don't want anyone who disagrees with their policies as a customer. read more

I went for lunch Friday at noon to see a little piece of paper stating they would open at 1:30. I walked in because the doors were unlocked and I asked the waitress if they were really closed over lunch, she was very rude and said read the sign. I have ate there previously and she is one of the worst servers ever! She takes your order , delivers your food and then plays on her phone. My family of 8 have been customers of Ramona's for many, many years, in both the original and new locations. It's one of the few restaurants we can all agree on. Kinda disappointed with this place. I was looking forward to getting their fried burrito for awhile and when I did, it wasn't great. The meat wus unseasoned and there was to sauce on it. I had to soak it in hot sauce. The service was fine because we went when it was slow but you'd really have better food somewhere else. read more

I went there sometime back. It was the second time I had been to their restaurant, but the first time I went alone. I got their Tuesday special. The food was good, and the service was OK, but the pricing was a little strange, to say the least. I have never experienced this type of pricing ever before, and I'm not a young person. First off, it has one price for what I ordered on their online menu. When I got to the restaurant, stated what I wanted, and asked about the price, the waitress quoted a higher price, which wasn't too much higher, so I thought OK, I'll order it anyway. Then I had to ask for my bill after I had stopped eating for some time at that point. When she gave me my bill, it had only the entrée that I ordered and a grand total price handwritten and circled in black magic marker on the ticket that you normally give to the chef when you place the order. I know this because I have done waitressing myself years ago. There was no itemization of what I ordered, and that price was still higher yet. I assumed it was because it was including tax. But then, when I went to pay, the price had increased again. At that point, I thought I would not have paid this price if I would've known when I first sat down that it would be that price, but I paid it anyway. They are the only Mexican restaurant in my area, so saying I won't go back when I love Mexican food is not an easy choice, but if I go back, what happens next time will signify whether I ever go back again. I felt very taken advantage of. Plus, the meat was cold. The only other place in my area is Taco Bell, and they are absolutely awful. Their food is pure garbage. read more

It's a nice atmosphere, and things are improving since the City of Omaha is nearly bankrupted them by blocking access to the restaurant for nearly a year. Similar in price and taste to Jonesy's or Romeos. It's definitely a restaurant I'll keep going to. read more

Had high hopes for our second try as our first was a little shaky and we thought may just be bad luck. Our server seemed annoyed from the minute we walked in. Honestly I could look past that, but the food arrived at our table about 3mins after ordering... cold and tasteless. Margaritas.. we could only muster up about 5 "tastes". Left a full plate of food and 2 full margaritas. I know a lot of places are short staffed, but you're going to have to do better Romana's. 10/10 wont' be back, but I do wish them well. Sue and I went here for our usual Fri eve eatin place. Went to the old place down the street when I lived close and was single. Good then, good now. Sue ordered a mini taco salad. Said it was delicious. Both of us being "older" (well, if you consider 76 and 73 "older"), our appetites ain't as voracious as they were 119 yrs ago, and she said this "mini" was just the right amount. I had a two taco plate. Had rice and beans which I usually get anywhere I go. Very good. BUT, wait person brought out some of their "hot" sauce, which I, also, usually request. Now, I could DRINK that stuff. Had chunks of something in it that I couldn't identify but didn't care. Had some left over. AND, when I asked for box for my unused portion, she brought a little container for THAT, and another, fresh, little container. I'm high now. Ordered a Marg, which was very good, also. Absolutely terrible service. We ordered online to pick up at 7pm and arrived after coming 20 minutes from Council Bluffs to find out that they had cancelled our order without letting us know because they were out of one of the items we had ordered. No phone call to let us know and they didn't make the remainder of the order. When my husband asked if there was anything they could do to make it right after he was drove 20 minutes each way, no food was ready on time and no notification was given of cancellation, they said if we repaid for the rest of the food again, they would make it for us!!!! Got in the restaurant and order one meal to go and be to eat. Was told it was about 20 minutes for food. Ok. Got my food and waited another 65minutes for my to go order. Server checked on me once. Gave me my ticket 30 minutes before I even received my togo order. Could see into the kitchen and microwave was used a lot. Food was just meh.... 3 stars is being generous read more

I called and ordered 2 enchilada dinners and 1 fry bread taco. It was very delectable! They had my food ready to go when I got there and when I got it home it was warm and very tasty. Sorry to report. Ordered 1400 nachos. Toppings on top hot much inside pile of chips. Only served with sharing plates if you ask. Only get silver / napkin. If you need any extra napkins you have to ask. Nachos messy. Seems like extra napkins would be automatic. Beans have no flavor. 4:30. Out of beer. One Miller lite. None in other frig. Don't offer coors light. Blended drinks 8.50. 5:00. Had busy lunch. Had to redo food supply after elderly couples le. Waited 10 minutes to get order taken. It going to be a while. 25 minutes for the ground beef. 3 hours between 2 lunch crowd and 5 for dinner. They could manage to cook in between Only 6 tables in use. We drove from Bellevue. Not again. I am giving this 3 stars which for most people would probably be 4 stars. Overall the food was decent. The only place around who is doing a deep fried burrito so that was great. My wife liked her enchilada. However she said the Mexican rice had almost no flavor. There were no chips and salsa provided to the table. The decorations were bland but they had a good number of tables in such a small area. The service was good, but they waiter should get rid of the gloves since he is touching everything with the gloves on and then bringing our food out with the same gloves. Get rid of the gloves and use hand sanitizer before picking up people food. Overall, I would go hear again, which is saying quite a bit since 90% of the places we try are not worth visiting a 2nd time. read more

Dining at Ramona's again has been fabulous. My wife took me there for the first time nearly 20 years ago and I've loved going there since my first visit. When they closed the Redick location we were so sad. Back in business in Florence with a great location and the same top tier service we've always known. read more
