I'd never thought about having cream cheese and jelly on my sandwich, and now it will be one of my favorite combinations EVER. Star Deli is tucked away in Benson, and is open a bit later than other restaurants at all to cater to the scene of the strip. As a vegetarian, I greatly appreciate their entire list of veggie options, which allows me to feel unlimited in my options - unlike traditional sandwich shops that may have 1-2 veggie options. Star Deli uses creativity to cater to all types of sandwich desires! I tried the Jalapeño Popper this visit, switching it up from my traditional sweet potato sandwich order. As you can see from the photos, there was no skimping on my jalapeños, and they were crunchy and fresh! Not very spicy, but that is not something they can control without taking a bite of each pepper lol. This sandwich was flavorful and unique, and I would definitely order it again. The only worker quickly got 'cookin' once myself and one other customer ordered, delivering timely service without the rushed chaos of fast food as I saw him freshly chopping up the veggies. The local artwork on the walls and the location being in Benson, Star Deli is one of my favorite sandwich spots. A block away from a vintage store from the left and the right, bars nearby, coffeeshops, shopping, and ice cream, it really is prime for the day or night! I recommend the Jalapeño Popper, but with such a large menu, I will probably try something new next time, and so should you :) read more

We stopped in last night after a show to grab a bite. We're from out of town and read some great reviews. We were so glad we did! That gentleman who waited on us was so kind and helpful. We ordered A Red Baron, Don Rocco and a BBQ Shredded Pork. All 3 were phenomenal. You can really taste the quality of ingredients and every bite was just perfect! We waited over 30 minutes for three sandwiches, which cost $15 each -- and they were completely average. Nothing memorable about the food, and definitely not worth the price or the wait. There was only one person working, and instead of moving with urgency, he was chatting with other customers. Went in on a Friday afternoon, the place was almost empty. The one guy at the counter was friendly. Ordered the turkey pesto sandwich on French baguette. The wait took a while because the baguette wasn't ready yet, so he threw in a free cookie! Super nice. The shop is also an art gallery so I had fun looking at the art on the walls while I waited. And to top it all off, I think it was the best turkey pesto sandwich I've ever had! Next time I'll try one of their delicious looking vegetarian options. read more

Went late Friday night after a gig at the reverb lounge. The person working there was really chill and accommodated our needs easily. He gave good suggestions for the sandwiches, and was polite to us when it was near closing. I also really like the art around the place. Great French bread! Tons of vegetarian options as well. We both loved our Sammie's. One of us had Turkey with fresh strawberries-the spring turkey! And the other had sweet-potato avocado. Yummy. And a 1/2 sammie was more than enough. Has artwork on the walls which is fun to look at but not enough seating-I am guessing they do a brisk takeout. My favorite sandwich shop in town, not just in Benson. They are a little slow to make the sandwiches but usually it's just one person working, so you need to cut them some slack. The Peach and Pork is my fav, but you do need to watch out for the occasional bit of pit in it. read more

I eat here all the time and always get the Turkey Pesto sandwich, which is one of my all time favorite sandwiches. Their baguette is fantastic and the deli meats always taste like they are great quality. Stopped in before the most recent Benson First Friday and tried the Peach & Pork instead, which was SO good - might be my new go-to for awhile. I will say it leaked a lot of incredibly sticky peach juice and I had to wash my hands afterwards, not the best option for on-the-go. I love that this place doubles as an art gallery, I've seen some really neat exhibits here. For some reason they always only have one, maybe two people working, which does make it a bit slow, but they do a great job, and the sandwiches are worth the wait. read more

Great little hole in the wall deli tucked off a busy street in Benson. They offer a wide variety of sandwiches, from traditional to more unusual choices... The shop is small, with a few tables and artwork all over the walls you can purchase. I was slightly surprised to be able to watch them assemble my sandwich in front of me, on a tiny little kitchen counter..Im not convinced that they even have a standard kitchen in this joint? But that's not a big deal-just a little upraised. I ordered the jalapeño poppers grilled cheese. So good! The poppers used super fresh jalapeño and had a nice bit of heat, and the strawberry jam added a sweet element that really complimented the other flavors. I got it on sourdough to add some crunch to it. Prices are not bad, I got the half sandwich and added chips and a can of soda and it came up to around $8. Glad I discovered this place, def recommend if you're a sandwich person but want to branch out a little bit from the usual haunt. read more

A wonderful little unassuming deli in Benson, tucked away around the corner off of Maple and Military. The sandwich selection is eclectic, with some nice combinations, and daily-baked cookies also available at the register. The smaller size sandwiches, all $5 as of this writing, are certainly large enough to feed a grown human. It's a great find, and I look forward to my return. read more

I stopped in here recently when I was craving a sandwich but was not too impressed with the local sandwich places. I wasn't disappointed. The place did look just a little dingy and it even smelled a little like stale sink water, and the prices were a tad on the high side for sandwiches, but I was feeling hungry and adventurous. The guy who handled everything for me was super friendly and had no problem explaining some of the sandwiches and what the regulars usually go with. I tried the Cubano and the Long Beach to go. They were both outstanding sandwiches. Everything looked/smelled/tasted fresh and great, which is the first time in a long time I've had any luck with a deli in Omaha. If the place was a little cleaner and the prices just a tad lower, I could see myself eating here regularly. I'm at least going to give them another shot or two, because those sandwiches were really damn good. Well...it's been a spell since I've done this. Had to deal with a loss. My Special Lady Wife was eaten by a shark, that shark swam ashore and was then eaten by a T-Rex, which got sick to it's stomach and vomited that goo into an active volcano. My challenge to them: if I love your sandwiches, completely sober (straight-edge) then I'll give you a 5 star review because I knew service would be a task at this late hour and with everyone pouring into the place. Well they earned that 5 star review and a little golden banana sticker. I won't get into how I had to remove some vagrants from the premises but it was awesome and it made me look sexy...ladies??? I ordered a Cubano because that is the bar I set for sammiches. I expected a wait and in under 10 minutes (that's fine) I got something in my hands that was bigger than I expected it to be (grow up). Size was a pleasant surprise (seriously, grow up), the bread had a crunch to it that comes with good quality bread and the ingredients exploded in my mouth...I'm just gonna stop there because you won't stop snickering...kids. STAR Deli makes a far superior sandwich and much better value comparison to any chain sandwich shop. Deli was clean - food preparer was courteous and helpful. No I'm not family or friend of owner. Ordered - Above Average Joe - Sandwich on Multi Grain - sub/horsey Mayo, French Onion Soup and Soda. Sandwich was warm had generous portion of meats and all ingredients tasted fresh. I order FOS whenever available at a restaurant so I have many and wanted to try Star recipe. Outstanding rich - beefy - caramelized Onion - just right seasoning - flavor. I've been going to star deli for about a year now and they continue to be my favorite sandwich spot. The staff are talented, fun workers, even having to deal with the weekend rush around 2 AM. Star Deli has a plethora of vegetarian and vegan sandwiches, so when I cut meat out of my diet I was sad I couldn't have my favorites like the pork carnita and turkey pesto, but the jalapeño popper grilled cheese changed my life! On my most recent visit to Star Deli, I felt it'd be rude to not try at least two sandwiches, so ordered up halfsies of both the Jalapeno Popper and the Cubano. Bonus, you can also get some Ted & Wally's ice cream for dessert! And the staff is awesome enough to hold onto it until you're finished eating a day's worth of calories before dropping it off. The bar-height seats are my favorite place to sit, so you can stare out the window and watch the world go by between bites. But there are really no bad seats in the house because the whole place doubles as an art gallery as well. They get relatively busy for lunch, which is the only time I've been, but any waiting you have to do will be rewarded with sandwich glory. read more

Star Deli has never once disappointed me in any regard. The sandwiches are unique, delicious, & surprisingly affordable considering how "gourmet" they taste. They have vegetarian options (options, plural!) & can customize anything on the menu to suit your preferences. The staff is always undeniably incredible. Even when it's midnight & they have to deal with countless drunk people coming in for a late night snack, they're still consistently personable & friendly with each customer. I love that they accept tips as well. They're not just throwing meat and cheese together, they are crafting an artisanal delight for their customers & they deserve to be tipped for their labors. Lucky for us, my wife and I got to sneak away from the office to try this gem. After hearing about it at its previous location, I had been yearning to try it out. Priced at $8 for whole, $4 for half, I ordered the Club. With several choices, I elected for the baugette. Though the whole sandwich looked overbearing, it was the right size portion. This deli is located in the heart of Benson, and it's one of the less pretentious options available. I enjoyed my Cuban sandwich, and I thought the price was fair. The layout of the space could use some reimagining, and the tables and chairs do a lot of wobbling, so it's not a place to sit and enjoy a long lunch. With all things Benson, parking is an issue at noon. But the sandwiches are good and the owner was a genuinely nice guy so we'll probably be back. read more
